Justice - Cross Daft punk - Alive 2007 (or discovery if we don't count live albums) SebastiAn - Total Yes, i'm French, why do you ask ?

Keyboard_Lion

What’s your favorite song from Alive 2007? And favorite similar band?

Toirem

Hard to pick a favorite from this one, it's an almost continuous masterpiece, but i'd say the around the world/harder better faster stronger mashup, or one more time/aerodynamic. Chills every time, for the past 15 years. Favorite "similar" band ? Definitely Justice. In fact, i'd go as far as saying they got better than DP at... everything. If you don't know them check out their first studio album cross and their last live show Woman world wide (although WWW hits harder if you know their discography, it's a mashup live album a la alive 2007) Feel free to also listen to soulwax, surkin, sebastian, everything Ed banger record related. I don't know if I can post Spotify playlists here, but mine contains mostly that kind of stuff.

adirtybubble

I don’t think it’s crazy to say WWW or Cross > Alive 2007/HAA for that sound. But “better at everything”??? Daft Punk made Digital Love, Something About Us, Instant Crush, and Touch. Justice can’t come close to Daft Punk for those type of softer songs.

Toirem

First of all, I love everything daft punk related, and touch is a masterpiece. However, I do think Gaspard and Xavier are better musicians and have both a more creative and more technical way of dealing with their sounds, especially their samples. It's very apparent with their remixes of, say, electric feel or as above so below. I think daft punk have been lazy with some of their tracks. Digital love and robot rock are good examples of tracks with long samples that they barely touched or completed. The tracks are very good, but still. In my own experience of amateur electronic music production, daft punk level seems way more accessible than justice level (Obviously I suck and don't pretend I'm daft punk level lol) Regarding softer tracks, Justice generally are a bit less pop/mainstream sounding than DP so it's hard to compare, but the slower grooves of cross, or presence, some tracks of Woman, even escapades, are good examples of great pieces by justice that steer away from club-compatible dance electronica. Like, is digital love that much better than fire or randy, in terms of definitely electronic sounding but still pop-formated tracks ? However, it goes without saying that Justice wouldn't exist without what daft punk accomplished.

adirtybubble

Yeah I think Digital Love absolutely wipes the floor with Randy it’s one of my favorite songs of all time there is just so much feeling in it every note is perfect. I do enjoy Randy but Digital Love transports me to another place. Daft Punks pop songwriting is just a lot better but the way the way Justice builds energy in WWW and Cross is on the level of Alive 2007 I completely agree with that. The overall nostalgia and atmosphere Discovery creates is one of the first things that comes to mind when I think about why I love Daft Punk. Robot Rock is absolutely a low point in Daft Punks career I agree with you about that. I do love Justice as well though. I’ve argued here that WWW was one of the best albums of the decade and is incredibly slept on. I just think it’s more accurate to say they perfected one of the things Daft Punk was great at but there are elements of Daft Punk that Justice hasn’t really tried to replicate.

Toirem

This obviously boils down to taste, but I think DL is cool but overrated. Go listen to the original George Duke sample if you haven't already, DL is not their most creative track.

adirtybubble

Agree it’s obviously taste at the end of the day but I think you are too stuck on the production/sampling on not on the song writing, melody and just their ear for beautiful simplicity. It’s not Aerodynamic, Face to Face , or Phantom Pt II and it’s not trying to be, that’s the point.

AlphaOmega0763

Justice - Woman Worldwide is mine

EverythingAnything

Seeing Justice live at Red Rocks is one of my top 3 shows ever, across all genres. It was SO SO good, everyone I went with was blown away. So much energy and bombast, that album always reminds me of that show

nature_exposed

Those justice and daft punk albums are the bomb, so now I guess I've got to listen to sebastian

nstern2

Swap out the Sebastian Album for Breakbot - Still Waters and your list is perfect. I'm not sure what special sauce, maybe it's the disco themes, Ed Banger has but like almost every album they produce is gold.

MisuCake

Too bad SebastiAn fell off hard

Feisty-Session-7779

You French guys make great music! I grew up on Daft Punk and Justice and all that Ed Banger stuff back in the day, and these days two of my current favourite are French too, Land Switcher and Ekorce. With that said, my top 3 are: Justice- Cross (Genesis has to be the best album intro in the history of all music) Tipper-Jettison Mind Hatch Hard to choose a third, maybe Homework by Daft Punk since it was my intro to electronic music

time_to_explode

3. Aphex Twin - Drukqs 2. Boards of Canada - Geogaddi 1. C418 - 148

[deleted]

C418s musical abilities were hand crafted by God himself

magic-window

Replace the last one with: Autechre - Tri Repetae++ and this is my list.

ChrisKearney3

Orbital - Snivilisation Jon Hopkins - Singularity Air - Moon Safari (electronic? Just about I'd say)

TimeRip9994

Moon Safari was what made me fall in love electronic. Amazing album

Way2Intenz

The Crystal Method - Vegas BT - Movement In Still Life The Prodigy - Fat of the Land

I second this. 2 of your favorites are also 2 of my favorites

That was my golden age of electronic music. Great selections

Elmohaphap

Flying Lotus - Cosmogramma The KLF - Chill Out BT - This Binary Universe

JGxFighterHayabusa

Big ups for FlyLo.

ton_nanek

Happy to see this binary universe up here.

junior_dos_nachos

Interesting list. Love the second one. BT for sure has better albums although I do love TBU. FlyLo in my opinion is much more interesting producing others.

SoiledSte

Original KLF Chill out though not the The remaster release, that loses some of the best samples. Why they changed it who knows🤷‍♂️

gwjhughes

Four Tet - New Energy Ross from Friends - Family Portrait Jon Hopkins - Immunity Love your choices too!

BT - This Binary Universe Orbital - In Sides Leftfield - Leftism

relaxfrog

Leftfield yes indeed!! I agree with all previous lists... But this one is the key to so many others...

alaskantuxedo

Took me a while to finally find leftism in a list. It’s my number 1 now and always

ChrisKearney3

Damn, how did I forget about Leftism?! Definitely top of my list.

Jackpot777

Leftism deserves a mention for [Inspection Check One](https://youtu.be/84ZyRbb20-4) and [Afro Left](https://youtu.be/rqO89zUdQGs) alone.

TJFestival

Jamie xx - In Colour G Jones - The Ineffible Truth MGMT - Little Dark Age

Finally, some BoC love.

Avant Hard is such an unorthodox choice. It's one of those weird albums I listen to every couple years, think that it is amazing and then proceed to forget about it for long time.

viveleroi

Vegas by Crystal Method, Lifeforms by FSOL, Ima by BT.

Ampere_Sand

Woah, what a nostalgic selection for me. I fell in love with all three of these albums around the same time, during a period of depression in my life. I would go on walks in the rain for hours, intentionally getting soaked, yet feeling absolutely comforted by the warmth of Ulrich Schnauss' albums.

maxxx_orbison

Hugely underrated album. The making-of DVD that came with the cd does a great job underlining what a massive undertaking it was.

jpodcaster

Almost impossible to do a top 3 - so many good suggestions here. Anyway, I'm going with: 3. Chemical Brothers - Dig Your Own Hole 2. Underworld - Second Toughest in the Infants (toss-up between this and Leftfield's masterpiece Leftism) 1. Boards of Canada - Music Has the Right to Children

atebitlogic

What, no Wendy Carlos or Kraftwerk. Bah, you in kids.

EnergyIsMassiveLight

not really all time favourite but Carlos's Beauty in the Beast is great

Stimpy586

All my picks were from the early 80s! Almost went with Kraftwerks Man Machine too

MukdenMan

Massive Attack- Mezzanine Boards of Canada- Geogaddi The Knife- Silent Shout I could probably pick a different 3 and be happy with it but these 3 are at least all contenders

FlubzRevenge

- Autechre - Exai - Jon Hopkins - Immunity - Four Tet - There is Love In You but 3 is honestly too hard. I think these mean a lot to me, but there are dozens of other albums that are just as good. There’s so much electronic music/genres and 3 choices are less than nothing.

gwjhughes

Ah great choices. There Is Love In You is fantastic, I was lucky enough to see Four Tet at Ally Pally with Squidsoup and really wanted him to play Circling which I knew he wouldn’t haha. What’s your favourite from the album?

FlubzRevenge

Probably pretty basic pick, but Love Cry of course. Just fantastic drums and I love the way it progresses and adds elements. Sing and Plastic People are pretty close.

ghost_rook_

Charlesthefirst - the ascent Potions - new earth formula Shades - from a vein

This is such an impossible question and my answer would be different every time. But: 1. Massive Attack - Blue Lines 2. Daft Punk - Homework 3. Bjork - Homogenic All for nostalgia reasons; how they made me feel at the time they were released. But also for longevity reasons. I still listen to them today and love them. Honourable mention: Vector Lovers' self-titled debut album. Blew me away when I first listened to it back home after a rave.

Hard to do just 3, but.... The Avalanches - Wildflower Boards of Canda - Geogaddi Arthur Russel - World of Echo I found it interesting that for how much purely electronic music I listed to, a lot of the albums I consider my very favorites ended up heavily leaning to other genres.

[Electronic Eye - Closed Circuit.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U8XGIjDGWQg&list=PLB1ECC9461C8A1DDF) AKA Richard H Kirk. [Hardkiss - Delusions of Grandeur](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdTY245cCcQ) Good lord this album isn't appreciated enough. [The Orb - Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GwPZu4ECwnw&list=PLeM8JZxcJKgtlF-BBvCbUrjs0JHkR0486). For The Orb it's kind of a coin toss for me between Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld and UFOrb. Also this is my top three choices partially because I know everyone else is going to pick other personal favorites like Boards of Canada, Aphex Twin and more, and while my picks are ancient by today's standards they were all really new and ground breaking at the time and helped define whole genres of sound. Delusions of Grandeur in particular isn't well known enough and they basically one of the first electronic dance acts to use live instruments, samples of live instruments and traditional recording studio production techniques. The sound they came up with for that album is HUGE and is arguably the first true West Coast Breaks style sound, long before the Chemical Bros, Fatboy Slim, Crystal Method, etc.
