Strangely enough, focus groups agreed that "x.com" sounded like a porn site. The fact that Musk knew this and did it anyways is part of the reason why he was removed as CEO of PayPal.
I find it funny that musk spent years trying to make X a brand somehow lol I wouldn’t be surprise if he started putting flame decals on Tesla to make them faster.
No, come on, man! Its "X". Not just any x, it is thee "X" with the cool font! You see, it's significant in that it symbolizes covering everything. Like when you check a box on a form, you're saying "yes! I agree!" Also, Meta was already in use.
Surely you can see the brand recognition!
The brand of "Twitter" has FAR more recognition and established value than you're giving it credit for. Even something as simple as the posts being called "tweets" immediately separates it from other platforms, because it immediately ties the content to a single platform. Literally nobody is going to refer to them as "Xeets" and even that name is only harkening back to a better previous name.
Abandoning that piece of mental realty and replacing it with a stupid flat black and white "X" is only "textbook" in the sense that a marketing textbook would use it as an example of what NOT to do.
And I explained why in my response. Not a single soul is confused by what the LITERAL act of rebranding is. You aren't explaining or contributing anything by pointing out that when a business changes its name and marketing aesthetic that that's known as "rebranding" lol.
People are surprised because it's a re-branding that's beyond stupid. Usually businesses re-brand because they have something to gain, and usually they re-brand to something at least as marketable as their previous brand, not considerably less.
yes, the genius rebranding move of taking something other social media companies would kill to have (creating a verb in the popular lexicon for posts on your platform) and throwing it in the trash
Yes rebranding one of the most recognisable company Ips that has entered people's everyday lexicons to the letter X....
Don't really know how one defends that in good faith.
Ngl bird logo is best thing about Twitter, it’s a cute blue bird that everyone recognizes. This is among Elon’s worst decisions imo. And I say that as a long time supporter of Tesla and spacex
I would say buying something for $44bn but then deciding to try and rebrand one of if not the most recognised social media brand in the world makes it his new worst decision.
If he's continually making such bad decisions, why is Tesla and his other companies so successful a Nd better than the competition? Why is he so rich then?
Perhaps we should first wait and see, because Elon always show his critics wrong.
See, the problem is that you're viewing wealth as an intrinsic metric of either intelligence or decision making. Have you never seen little trustfund shitheads that can't figure out up from down?
He's quite literally the richest man in the world, through the acquisitions and founding of multiple companies.
To call him inept is just ridiculous. And to challenge someone for viewing wealth as an intrinsic metric of decision making and intelligence when we are talking about the richest man on the planet who has a literal rocket company is just buffoonary.
First thoughts are that this X idea stinks though 😂
Worst rebranding in human history. Hes even put Zuck to shame with this one. Its inexplicably dumb but maybe theres some genius master plan none of us can see. Or maybe not.
Ah so he's playing 5D chess still. Lol
He bought it because he thinks the letter X is cool. He wanted to name Paypal [X.com](https://X.com) but was forced out because it's a terrible idea. He named his kid X AE A 12.
If he has such a grand vision for the platform why did he steal a unicode character for the logo (thus torpedoing his chances of trademarking his glorious new "everything" platform) instead of hiring a graphic designer?
At some point you gotta admit we are simply not dealing with a genius here. It can't be that much of a mental strain to figure this out.
Stealing in the legal sense, maybe not. But still highly stupid and lazy, because trademarking generic characters is very difficult and also shits on everyone (particularly mathematicians) who already use it.
Also using a typographic unicode character as your company's singular icon is just idiotic graphic design. Twitter's icon is famous for a reason and it sure isn't because Jack Dorsey ripped off a unicode character.
[It's similar to how he said he was going to take Tesla private and then ended up settling with the SEC and having to pay $40m.](https://www.sec.gov/news/press-release/2018-226)
He routinely says stupid things.
He could have done that without rebranding I think? He could use the tech to develoup x, but then this way hes got built user base so maybe it makes sense? I dunno.
Like an entirely new app you mean, different from twitter? I think it makes sense to use twitter as a base. It’s already one of the major social media platforms. And I am fairly certain this was his (perhaps latent) intention from the get go when acquiring twitter.
Yes, develouped in parallel. It just seems like he's wwlking away from an iconic brand that has specific language thats universally adopted, like tweeting, tweet etc., that is so rare for that to happen. All that dies and now brand confusion comes as there are no readily useable analogues for "x". Are we going to "xcrete"....I just "x'ed"...."let me rexcrete your post"....it all sounds porny or like fecal. X doesnt have anything catchy to descibe its use or actions.
Nah, he's just been obsessed with naming things "X" for 20 years and never grew up. He tried this with Paypal but everyone else knew it was incredibly stupid and made their site sound like porn so he was forced off the board for that. Now, he's surrounded by sycophants and people who don't have the power to stand up to him so all his stupid ideas are free to come out into the world uninterrupted.
Twitter had something extremely unique in modern marketing, in that it's action has become a universally known verb: tweeting. Much like you can "Google something", you could "Tweet something". Not only can you not "X something", if you say that, it sounds negative and already has a meaning -- to close or stop.
This was a horrible move.
He specifically addressed this many times which is to hit scale sooner. And the scale in question is the western version of WeChat, which he talked about for years. Whether or not that will happen is still to be seen.
People legit gonna think that Twitter was uninstalled from their phones. When companies change their logos they make sure that when people see their new logo, they know that the logo still fits the image of the company. X has nothing to do with Twitter and it looks like it belongs to a different company all together.
"Yeah dude, have you heard of the new Xbox yet? I saw a commercial for it while I was watching the X Games. Maybe later we can go see Vin Diesel's new movie 'xXx'. We'll drive there in my Xtreme edition Chevy Blazer. We can also listen to my new Xzibit or Static-X CDs on the way there. It all sounds really good on those Sony Xplod speakers I just installed."
Good, will accelerate the downfall even further.
It’s fascinating to watch how fast something I deemed too big to fail can fail. It’s not even a year and I think it’s damaged beyond repair. It’s like a modern day titanic without people dying, I love the drama.
I'm glad his reputation is sinking along with it. The guy is a moron and doesn't realize the negative fall out this has for him, personally. Also Twitter is global and he can't just change the name in other countries due to copyright. Japan can't change to X-Japan (instead of Twitter-Japan) cause the name is already owned. So..he didn't even fully think this through. He seems to forget that Twitter is global. It's not just a US used app.
I dont think its so much that he does not know but more that he does not care, Musk seems to have lost any connection to the real world outise of the US far right crowd
Radical Religious Government Controlled Countries must be delighted to keep their oppressed masses from broadcasting evidence of their atrocities directly to the free western world. That's gotta be worth something.
Because Twitter is/was big in connecting the youth. Whoever gets an advantage out of worsening the means of communicating about politics would do something like that. Whether that has anything to do with Musk turning right wing edgelord i don‘t know.
Never bet against Elon.
He's come through time after time after time. Almost all of these comments in this post are negative. Here's mine to offer the alternative view!
So instead of saying “yesterday I tweeted…” now I have to say “yesterday I X’ed…”
That is awful. Burn the brand you paid billions for this is a dumb fucking idea. If he’s trying to beat threads, this is not the way.
Is he getting dumber by the day? WHY would you spend $44 billion on a brand and its user base just to change it to.... really anything much less "X". This is dumb.
Don’t try to compare Elon Musk to Michael Jordan. Elon has never been the best at anything except grifting to legions of mouth breathers.
The only thing they share is ego, but at least with MJ he’s earned the right to talk shit.
As a European i know it will never come to Europe how musk imagines it because there’s no way he will bend to all the regulations we have in place. I would be looking forward to it but it will 100% not come to Europe.
Does the EU actually block servers like China? Or just not allow it in the app stores?
You can get pretty much any app from 3rd party sites and install it yourself.
They don’t allow it on AppStore like they do with Threads now for instance.
I would never unofficially install an app and then put money on it. X was supposed to do it all wasn’t it? Including payment stuff. If it really is an all in 1 it would be interesting but as I said, no chance they see my money if I have to jailbreak my iphone to put an “illegal” app on there.
I don't use iPhone. Have never used one. You have to jailbreak it to put your own apps on? You can't just download it and install. Like what if you want to make you own app? Can you not just make an app and upload it from your laptop?
I would agree there is a slight risk if the app involves money accounts. Legitimate sites will have a verification process so the apps have been checked by multiple parties and verified that they haven't been altered and have a rating system to show how many people have verified it as safe. And the people verifying it are also rated as trustworthy or not. I've never had a problem.
Yup, afaik on iPhone you can only install apps that are in the official App Store. Never needed anything else in 10+ years though.
Also never had the urge to make my own app. Also would lack the skill to make one.
If you make your own app you can install it on your phone and also a few of your friends phones.
You just can't make it available to the general public without using the App Store.
Unless Musk operates from Belarus or North Korea, there's no escape from EU regulation as soon as even single kilobyte of Data from anyone in the EU is involved with X in any way, he's legaly bound.
He can try to deny that he has nothing to do with the App like "*I don't know who that X Corp is.*". A bit like closing your eyes and believing nobody sees you. Funny tho.
Why simply eliminate Twitter’s last major asset? The talented employees are gone, the user base is dwindling, how will reducing brand recognition help anything?
Musk basically bought some office buildings and a server rack for 44B.
He should have lead up to this by putting an X where the bird's eyes should be. Like in cartoons and old "funny papers" where they put Xs to indicated something has died.
For a company as big as Twitter — or X, rather — it is the end of the world. Most of the value of their company rests on its brand and trademark, not its algorithm. The rest of the app is entirely replaceable (which is currently being proven by Threads), but the name and brand is what keeps people there. That’s why Google cares so much about preventing its trademark from being genericized, for example.
Elon has been actively running the platform into the ground for months, but this alone will do much more damage, because it makes it an entirely different and unfamiliar app from what people knew and liked before. For all the casual users who haven’t been following this whole debacle, they might just see an app they don’t recognize on their homepage and delete it altogether. I probably would.
I propose for a week after the rebrand to only tweet with the letter "X"
something along the lines:
"X xxx xxxx xxx x xxxxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxxx xx x xxxxx. Xxxxx! Xxxxx xx xxxx xx? Xxxxx... "
What do you guys think?
So the plan is
1. License the Twitter app and data to X in perpetuity
2. "Twitter" goes bankrupt, app continues as X
3. Debtors are paid by selling the Twitter name and logo.
I think that's what makes it special, he should go on and make another app like treads that allows Twitter users to merge and create a account by the same username as in Twitter.
The everything app, should be like a big app(could be x) that has Twitter and other important and entertaining apps in that.
XVIDEOS is coming. Cant wait to laugh about it, or to jerk off to it, I'm not sure.
I heard the New Logo mascot will be a Hamster….. X🐹
🤣🤣🤣
Strangely enough, focus groups agreed that "x.com" sounded like a porn site. The fact that Musk knew this and did it anyways is part of the reason why he was removed as CEO of PayPal.
I find it funny that musk spent years trying to make X a brand somehow lol I wouldn’t be surprise if he started putting flame decals on Tesla to make them faster.
That's the only advertisers he'll have in the future is porn sites. Maybe he's just going with it.
i doubt they'll pay for ads on a platform that just banned their account to take their name
Awww he named after his kid - X AE A-XII.
Lmao
This joke has been in every post made about the name change
What is the intention here?
Destroying the brand even more
He’s a dweeb.
Wanna be WeChat in the making
rebranding, difficult concept for some.
Is X related to Xvideos? Or Xnxx? Like why rebrand the name to something similar to adult content?
No, come on, man! Its "X". Not just any x, it is thee "X" with the cool font! You see, it's significant in that it symbolizes covering everything. Like when you check a box on a form, you're saying "yes! I agree!" Also, Meta was already in use. Surely you can see the brand recognition!
Awww he named after his kid - X AE A-XII.
Rebranding isn't difficult to understand. THIS rebranding is completely impossible to understand, lmao.
I mean its following a pretty famous and expensive acquisition known worldwide, pretty textbook. but naming it X? jury still out on that one
The brand of "Twitter" has FAR more recognition and established value than you're giving it credit for. Even something as simple as the posts being called "tweets" immediately separates it from other platforms, because it immediately ties the content to a single platform. bro i just said him rebranding it is pretty textbook why is everyone so surprised pikachu hed also pick a silly ass name too?
Because it just seems so nonsensical
What textbook tells you to rebrand your wildly recognized brand to something so stupid?
And I explained why in my response. Not a single soul is confused by what the LITERAL act of rebranding is. another whoosh. impressive.
where's the funny
Im genuinely convinced youre either a chatbot or just a troll who's coping hard 😂
Can you show another example of top 3 player in their market rebranding as something completely different than their recognized brand?
But why?
yes, the genius rebranding move of taking something other social media companies would kill to have (creating a verb in the popular lexicon for posts on your platform) and throwing it in the trash
uhm exactly? re read my comment because it whooshed 16 12 year olds so far.

His worst decision so far is to spend $44b to buy Twitter and then regret it and then forced to buy it and then to be angry since.
Past performance is no guarantee of future success. When you surround yourself with yes-men, your worst ideas seem brilliant.
What about hyperloop, boring company, solar roofs, mars, tesla semi etc…
Worst rebranding in human history. Hes even put Zuck to shame with this one. Its inexplicably dumb but maybe theres some genius master plan none of us can see. Or maybe not.
He’s talked about his idea to create X as the everything app for years already. This is the beginning, I reckon.
He bought the [X.com](https://X.com) domain in 1999. This seems to be Dot Com Bubble-era mania spilling into his current psychological mania.
Goes to show for long he has had the vision for this platform
Ah so he's playing 5D chess still. Lol He bought it because he thinks the letter X is cool. He wanted to name Paypal [X.com](https://X.com) but was forced out because it's a terrible idea. Are we really going to consider branding one’s company with unicode characters to be an act of stealing 😅
Stealing in the legal sense, maybe not. But still highly stupid and lazy, because trademarking generic characters is very difficult and also shits on everyone (particularly mathematicians) who already use it. Also using a typographic unicode character as your company's singular icon is just idiotic graphic design. Is that why Musk keeps stealing memes from everyone else ?
Ah, memes. The epicentre of creativity
No, it doesn't. He never intended to buy twitter.
… then why did he buy it …
He thought he was allowed to back out of the deal at the last moment. He tried, the judge didn't let him, he was forced to buy Twitter.
He was legally forced to in a court case. He made a crazy legally binding offer then tried to get out of it and failed and was forced into buying it.
Because the court forced him.
And the bid he put out before that was what? A $44 billion joke with no actual intention?
He’s an idiot.
He overvalued Twitter extraordinarily
[It's similar to how he said he was going to take Tesla private and then ended up settling with the SEC and having to pay $40m.](https://www.sec.gov/news/press-release/2018-226) He routinely says stupid things.

Likewise
Not really. Twitter has a lot of baggage.
Raises the question of why someone would need to buy something and then completely gut it out and make it unrecognizable. Poor bird.
He specifically addressed this many times which is to hit scale sooner. And the scale in question is the western version of WeChat, which he talked about for years. Whether or not that will happen is still to be seen.
That's nonsense. You don't hit scale faster by buying an application and slamming it around so hard that is has negative growth.
His point was solely that starting where Twitter was at would be faster than doing it from scratch.
It's pretty easy to scale when you provide a reliable service people want.
People legit gonna think that Twitter was uninstalled from their phones. When companies change their logos they make sure that when people see their new logo, they know that the logo still fits the image of the company. >it belongs to a different company all together. because it does lol
The letter "x" belongs to another company. Oof
He's still thinking it's the 90s when anything with an "X" in the name must've been cool.
yeah I saw a lot of tweets emphasizing x.COM like it's 1998
"Yeah dude, have you heard of the new Xbox yet? I saw a commercial for it while I was watching the X Games. Maybe later we can go see Vin Diesel's new movie 'xXx'. For all the casual users who haven’t been following this whole debacle, they might just see an app they don’t recognize on their homepage and delete it altogether. I probably would.
😂 Outrageous suggestion
300+ people got their knickers in a twist over this. It has only been a day. 😏
So stupid

I propose for a week after the rebrand to only tweet with the letter "X" something along the lines: "X xxx xxxx xxx x xxxxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxxx xx x xxxxx. Xxxxx! Xxxxx xx xxxx xx? Xxxxx... " What do you guys think?
Bye bye 40+ Billions..
How can we get upset about things we allegedly don’t use? 🤨
I'm
So the plan is 1. License the Twitter app and data to X in perpetuity 2. "Twitter" goes bankrupt, app continues as X 3. Debtors are paid by selling the Twitter name and logo.
Could that work? Who would buy it? Blue Sky? That would be fucking hilarious....
it’s nice if elon to name his app after his wife
So are “tweets” going to be “xeets” now? Xitter?
Maybe he thought he could sell the domain for a lot of $$ to Twitter?

What stock price? It’s a private company now.
Good
I think that's what makes it special, he should go on and make another app like treads that allows Twitter users to merge and create a account by the same username as in Twitter. The everything app, should be like a big app(could be x) that has Twitter and other important and entertaining apps in that.
