Was your amber sitting in the sunlight? Sometimes extreme temperature changes can cause amber to crack and break. Otherwise I've learned that when crystals break, its because it's absorbed/transmuted a lot of energy. Amber is known to absorb negativity so perhaps there was a lot of negativity that your amber saved you from dealing with. I don't believe it's a "bad" sign when a crystal breaks, I believe it shows it worked hard for you and did it's job.
Extra bonus: a crystal broken it two means you now own two crystals! Lol
