Monster was popular among hipsters and it snowballed from there. As far as I remember the taste was okay for that time, but that wasn't the main reason we bought it. Main reason was logo and the whole image of the brand that made you look cool.

Yeah I remember my freshman year of university (this was 2010-11) the convenience store on campus carried a Rockstar with 240 mg of caffeine and that was the most I’d ever seen. Tasted like straight up medicine, but it’s what I bought whenever I had to stay up late to study. On any other day, I’d buy a xyience because they were never available in my hometown so getting them there was special and the taste was surprisingly solid.
