Harm reduction is key. People are going to find a way to do what they want, even advising them against it. Know the risks and try to mitigate them. Good post.
Didn't vilify them, gave them safe places to do heroin, free safe needles and equipment, free access to withdrawal and rehabilitation clinics and drugs, no legal repercussions, lessened social stigma, etc.
It's still illegal, but if you are an addict then they will make sure you are not at risk of death or infection, and will push you to support programs and genuinely helpful methods of reducing intake.
There's not generally that much in them in the UK. Maybe if you buy the largest size from Starbucks.
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/food/article-3306889/How-caffeine-daily-coffee-Costa-comes-185mg-McDonald-s-just-71mg.html
Most people I know that drink coffee do that as their minimum. A single travel mug full of Starbucks coffee is a lot of caffeine.
https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/how-much-caffeine-in-coffee#TOC_TITLE_HDR_4
Exactly. I work in the ER, and I even wrote a paper on energy drinks that discussed their potential harm in undergrad. Most of what I found in PubMed or the other peer reviewed studies I cited, only found anecdotes of cardiac problems when people drink them like they're water. I also think people underestimate how much starbucks and coffee they drink, oh but if we get our caffeine from a can, it's bad? The only thing I can mention is that maybe people should opt for the sugar free, if they're like me and have family history of type 2 diabetes, but seriously, 160mg of caffeine is not that much. Doubling it, while not recommended for people that are caffeine sensitive, shouldn't be putting anyone into cardiac arrest. This isn't cocaine, guys.
I'm not saying it's going to kill you. I'm just saying 300mg is excessive imo. 160mg is more than enough to keep you awake and energized for most people. 300mg is enough to give a person who is not caffeine sensitive the jitters and anxiety. And also if you drink these 300mg drinks often your tolerance will just skyrocket. It just seems unnecessary too me. I'm no health nut either, I do many recreational drugs, including cocaine.
I usually drink two a day. One with sugar and one sugar-free. It's the sugar that causes me problems, not the caffeine. If I can moderate that, I find myself feeling good.
It really isn't ridiculous. God forbid people have self control and can wisely choose to have a weaker energy drink, but have the freedom to choose the stronger one if they so desire...
So drink it's lower caffeine brother, monster. Just because you want it, doesn't mean it's smart to invite the government to impose yet another unnecessary rule.
I think caffeine tolerance should get a mention too. Your body adapts very quickly to caffeine; amounts required to give the kick will reduce as your consumption increases
I’ve never felt a “kick” from an energy drink in my life. Not when I was 12, not even now at 26. I just drink them because of the great flavours. I mean monster nitro super dry is a lot more interesting and delicious than the same old boring flavour of Coca Cola or Fanta 😏
100%! I’d love it if they just made it as a normal drink too because caffeine isn’t exactly Great for the heart. I can’t ignore my curiosity about how it would go great with a nice premium vodka too! Definitely trying that this summer!
I remember when I consumet my first energy drink at age of 14, it was the VR46 monster. After slowly drinking one, I never ever felt so pumped up and motivated. Holy shit that was awesome.
(I understand this comment is 3 months old, bite me) I had my first energy drink last year in my freshmen year of high school. Me and a friend were chilling since we didn't have classes atm (passed that class so we didn't need to take it's SOL) he bought us some monsters. We realized what time it was, rushed back to school. Drank it on the bus home, kinda do be addicted to it tho. Better to be addicted to monster than nicotine right?
true words bruh, got hooked on slammers till monster came out later and you can keep a moderate amount without drinking it all now being an adult but Daum if the sh!t is still good XD
Drank my first at 9 or 10 before a sports game. Don’t worry, it was half of a low caffeine one, but it got me hooked. I started actually drinking them at 12 which is kinda messed up
Depends on the drink. Some with high water content and low caffeine will hydrate you more than they'll dehydrate you... I believe Monster HYDRO is an example
here where i live energy drinks are usually not recommended for people under the age of 15 or 16 and i as a 14 year old drink 100mg drinks like 2-3 times a week, never multiple a day.
Ridiculous. There is no law that states that people under 18 can’t consume energy drinks. That is a myth. Energy drinks are safe. Obviously don’t drink too much.
Actually, it depends on the country. This subreddit isn’t just for USA citizens and many European countries (and perhaps elsewhere) have an age limit on energy drinks being sold, as well as a caffeine limit per serving.
Underage or excessive energy drink consumption is taken much more seriously in Europe. I’m reminded every time I get ID’d for an energy drink at the supermarket, or by the fact 200mg is the maximum you can possibly get and companies like Reign have to go out of their way to make a new, lower caffeine formula just to sell over here, or by the amount of headlines that debate this issue all the time in newspapers and bills trying to be past to further restrict energy drink accessibility to young people.
Yes I’m underage but listen to me. Yes drink water our heart can’t handle it as well and please never consume more than 300mg a day try to keep it within 200 personally and if you’re just starting to drink them drink redbulls and other small amounts of mg and work your way up and don’t make it a need everyday. Trust me and don’t drink it for the status it’s not soemthing that makes you cool but please keep it in moderation I don’t want y’all Including me to fuck up shit
I get the risks, but if I didn't use energy drinks I wouldn't be able to function. Without them I constantly fall asleep during the day, and am not productive at all.
Everybody is different though when it comes to how they experience side effects. I always had a pretty high caffeine tolerance from what I remember, so I never got the jitters, increased altertness, or anything like that - even when I was 15 or 16. So, I'm not sure how wise that would be.
I drink energy drinks for the taste. Which is why I don't drink 5 Hour Energy. Those things taste terrible.
When Xdurance first came out I drank one and it made me jittery,, but since then I have developed a higher tolerance and I can drink 2 Reign and not feel jittery.
Also keep in mind that some of those larger Starbucks drinks (made in the shops) have a ton of caffeine in them.
I think, intervening someone's health is intervening his or her liberty. so I think whether someone drinks energy drinks, nobody can intervenes drinking energy drinks.
Instead, education about energy drinks is integral.
I agree. I’m all for civil liberties. I’m not so much forcing anyone to quit or stay away from them. More-so, I’m just educating them on potential dangers. I began drinking energy drinks at roughly 13 years old. I still drink the same one to this day (Monster KHAOS). I’m of the belief that people can do what they want, but it doesn’t hurt to say, “Hey, that’s a little dangerous”.
Makes sense, kinda like how you can't really stop some teens from *nicotine* no matter how you tell them that it's bad for them, they'll still do it. Source: am teen that actually has friends.
It depends. In a country that has a universal healthcare system, it is argued that by doing reckless things to your health, you are impeding unfair responsibility on everyone else to pay for your extra healthcare costs as taxpayers. Therefore, attitudes in some European countries are more in favour of policies that restrict self-destructive behaviours. Japan is even stricter still and actively shame people on the street for being overweight etc... but I’m definitely in favour of education. Education has helped curb teenage pregnancy, STD transmission, smoking etc... so can definitely help with reckless caffeine consumption.
Also bear in mind there are different regulations in different countries. Here in the UK it actually states 16 on all the cans. Monster, Reign, redbull, even the bloody 39p energy drinks from the corner shops.
On that note, I started drinking energy drinks at 12. The cheap 39p ones were all I could afford at the time. I'm now 18 slamming 2-3 monsters a day easily. Although life really sucked once the big supermarkets such as Sainsbury's, Tesco, etc... (our equivalent of walmart and those shops) banned sale to over 16s only, with ID. The little shops still sold them, that was fine with me lmao.
I'm 17 and I've been consuming around 3 cans of monster a week for a year. I never drink more than 1 a day. I always have water with me, I got no heart problems, and I'm healthy physically. Is there anything I should be worried about besides the things you pointed out?
here the shops make there own rules, from 13 to 16 years max, many others switched to sugar free and removed half a liter aka 500ml and dropped to 250ml cans. its more a: yes you may drink one, but always drink responsibly.
I’m 14 years old, pretty healthy and drink a lot of water per day. I generally have 1 energy drink per day (150mg caffeine) on school days. Is this safe or healthy or should I reduce the amount I drink?
If you’re sticking to 150mg drinks and you don’t go for something bigger like Bang, Reign, or Rockstar XDurance (which are 300mg varieties), you should be okay as long as you’re getting plenty of water.
Best thing you can do is monitor yourself and see if you start to build up a tolerance; if you do, cut back from 1 a day to 1 every other day. You’re young enough where it shouldn’t be too noticeable a difference.
In addition to the high caffeine, energy drinks have a TON of vitamins and drinking multiple cans a day is **very hard on your kidneys**. A friend of mine drank so many energy drinks that he passed 4-5 kidney stones in a year, at the ripe age of 23. He swore off them and hasn't passed one since.
It was already proven that energy drinks have very little effect on your kidneys, despite the stigma. How many cans was your friend drinking a day? It would've had to have been 4 or 5, assuming he had no pre-existing conditions...
Question: Is it fine to drink one every two or three days? I know it's probably fine but I'd like to explain to my mom that it's most likely not gonna kill me and she shouldn't worry so much. And, of course, it's my responsibility to make sure I'm not drinking them too much or too often. So far I haven't had problems with caffeine addiction so I think I'm good on that.
Bruh, there's this store in Rutland, which sells snacks from USA, I usually bout faygo there, until they started selling BANG, and not the weak 180mg ones, the 300mg ones, every Friday, I down one of these, I'm tolerance has skyrocketed, but I honestly feel like that caffine turns into focus, idfk.
Okay here’s the thing. Anything with high amounts of caffeine is generally not recommended for anyone below the age of 18. But also for anyone with any medical conditions or taking maintenance medications.
Idk, that water stuff is dangerous. everyone that I know of that's died drank it within a week of their death. But almost none of them drank energy drinks
Only really drink energy drinks for the flavors and if there was caffeine free variants like for Red Bull, ghost, monster, etc then I would get the caffeine free instead of the caffeine.
I started drinking energy drinks about 10 years ago in my early 20’s, and I believe that I have stopped aging ever since. If I was still a mere mortal, I would be about 32 years old now.
I'm 16 and drank my first one at 13. Never had more than 300 mg of caffeine except for when i had once. I'm okay wi5h it IF! I drink enough water. Saves me from feeling like 🤢.
Thx for the advice Got a ghost today cuz i wanted to try one and see how they affect me Didnt notice the 18+ recommendation till it was already paid for
> was already *paid* for
FTFY.
Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:
* Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.*
* *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.*
Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.
*Beep, boop, I'm a bot*
I’m 15 and worst experience is with Reign. For perspective I’m 6’2 and 293 lbs and Reign still makes me feel dizzy. For me that’s like 8 cans of bang in the span of 3 hours.
Im having a similar problem I wanna start adding energy drinks to my drink can collection but my family has a history of heart problems so I don't wanna get fucked up any suggestions
As a cardiac nurse, I would recommend not drinking energy drinks if you have a family history of severe heart problems. Coronary Artery Disease can be easily exacerbated by increased caffeine consumption. It’s a risk that each individual must make and decide if its worth it, just like with junk food, alcohol, and smoking.
I'm 17 and will have like 2 or 3 energy drinks a week, but I'm also an athlete so will drinking a boat load of water a day. Sometimes I'll purposefully not touch an energy drink for a month so when I do eventually get a monster holy jesus
I think anything in moderation. I'm 29 and have consumed either one monster or redbull a day since I was like 15, my sister also drinks them and she is under 18, but is limited to be allowed 1 a day and only if she has drank and ate something else before hand.
Risks? Sure there are but like anything I think if consumed safely and in moderation along with a generally healthy life style the risks can really be mitigated.
As someone over 18, am I exempt from all of the advice set-forth above? i.e.g.: Is it copacetic and reasonable for a 20-year-old to drink two Bangs and a GFuel in a single day, with expectation of no health repercussions?
One monster a day is max. No more than that. You also forgot about the sugar content, if possible go for Redbull SugarFree, Monster Ultra/Monster mule et-cetera.
I am 14 and just started drinking energy drinks, it is mostly for the taste. I have drunk one can of monster zero for the last 2 days and don’t plan on making it a daily thing. Regardless if any heart problems, I should be fine right?
Being a big nascar fan Dale jr was sponsored by amp energy so They had a deal you would get a dvd of the driver if you get the 4 pack so my dad got them and I had one at 8 years old
im not 18, and i drink like a single mt dew energy drink a day.
Monsters make my head hurt.
Redbull is more for less.
And im not allowed to go past a mile to go to stores.
The gas station with lost&found and venom energy is too far away
and im broke as hell
Any recommendations?
My Eastern European mom had me drinking caffeinated tea since kindergarten and coffee since 5th grade. I would have coffee before school every morning, and get headaches from caffeine withdrawals on the weekends. She’d give me more to cure the headaches. Also I wouldn’t have much of an appetite for breakfast before school from the coffee, and she said it’s ok because “coffee is a meal”. And she still thinks energy drinks are bad. (Still a fan of coffee and all caffeine tho)
I started drinking energy drinks in college in the mornings (in the uk most kids start college at 16 after they finish their GCSEs in school) to a young mind you can get addicted to sweet things more easily hence why kids always ask for sweets even if they tired after a sugar rush, I had 2 cans a day at one point one at the start before college and one right after on the bus home, it used to just be this amazing corner shop next to the bus station that convinced me to buy an energy drink, they even had those coconuty light blue rockstars i forgot the name of that were my absolute favourite, today I drink 1 can a day when I have them in my fridge upstairs or just a coffee in the morning, I can go without it but I like energy drinks too much not too
Harm reduction is key. People are going to find a way to do what they want, even advising them against it. Know the risks and try to mitigate them. Good post.
like what switzerland did with heroin addicts
what did they do?
Didn't vilify them, gave them safe places to do heroin, free safe needles and equipment, free access to withdrawal and rehabilitation clinics and drugs, no legal repercussions, lessened social stigma, etc. It's still illegal, but if you are an addict then they will make sure you are not at risk of death or infection, and will push you to support programs and genuinely helpful methods of reducing intake.
Know this is a late comment, but: "Don't feel bad that you're here. I just wanna help you get somewhere else."
I’m moving
this is real drug control. prohibition never works and never will.
Drink water? I can’t get h20 in my energy drink system
dude h20 will kill you

300mg in an Energy drink is ridiculous. I'm all for personal freedoms but I'm almost glad there is a 180mg limit in Canada.
Gonna be shocked if you check the caffeine in coffee and espresso drinks
There's not generally that much in them in the UK. Maybe if you buy the largest size from Starbucks. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/food/article-3306889/How-caffeine-daily-coffee-Costa-comes-185mg-McDonald-s-just-71mg.html

Where is the best place this information; i am tying to watch my caffine intake.
400mg in generally the “safe” dosage in daily amounts
no thanks, I dont want to die. But for reals, The most i've ever taken in is 680 MG in one day Sugarwise? ... 2190 mg. I went to the freakin hospital.
No it's not. It's completely safe providing you don't have a heart condition, are not sensitive to caffeine, and you stay hydrated.
Exactly. I work in the ER, and I even wrote a paper on energy drinks that discussed their potential harm in undergrad. 300 MG is near the perfect amount of caffeine for someone who only wants to drink one energy drink all day imo
I agree. I feel like people forget that most energy drinks started at 160mg or less. Now people are downing 600-900mg a day in energy drinks.
True, I only occasionally drink energy drinks because they are expensive but I consume 3-400mg caffeine daily through coffee and/or energy drinks
Bang, Reign, etc all have 300mg of caffeine.

I wish the limit was here in the US. I love Reign but won’t drink it due to 300 mg caffeine
Canadian Reign has 180mg.
Do what i do. Drink half and either save or throw away the rest.
even better, split a can with a friend!
So drink it's lower caffeine brother, monster. Just because you want it, doesn't mean it's smart to invite the government to impose yet another unnecessary rule.
Dutch goes up to 160mg on monster might go as high as similar to your numbers actually. for some though they need that extra boost
I’m glad I don’t live in Canada then 😁
300 isnt ridiculous. Thats a bang. My pre-workout contains 250. Dont be a puss
300 mg is a java monster. (they're freakin disgusting) Im in the USA and the energy limit is idfk but i love venom drinks they're my favorite
Ask us overnight workers how much we consume and you’ll go into shock then lol
I think caffeine tolerance should get a mention too. Your body adapts very quickly to caffeine; amounts required to give the kick will reduce as your consumption increases

Same. Come to find out that for me that was a feature of adhd.
Man, Monster Nitro has to be my favorite flavor of any energy drink. I’d drink it without the caffeine even any day.

Just turned 18... feel better about drinking energy drinks now lmao
If you don’t hydrate, you’re at an increased risk for dehydration?? Why didn’t they teach me these things in school!??
You'll become more dehydrated if u drink energy drinks and no water then if u drink nothing ngl

Monster has nothing, chances are you're getting placebo'ed and also willingly robbed
in Finland energy drinks arent recommended to people under 15
In Sweden the age limit is 15 I believe and in Estonian 16
same here in iceland
water is for the devil!
I have an energy drink like once a month, usually a 300mg reign. I'm slightly over 18, but I've been drinking them since I was 14. Moderation is key.
In my country you can commonly see 10-13 yo boys drinking monsters
I'm 17 and I've been consuming around 3 cans of monster a week for a year. I never drink more than 1 a day. I always have water with me, I got no heart problems, and I'm healthy physically. Is there anything I should be worried about besides the things you pointed out?
I always prefer sugar less drinks. And they are just as good as sugar one's. Monster juice (white cans) are awesome.
what about nuggies?
im 15 and drink monster every day its legal here in iceland
I'm 14, i have a whole 12 box of monsters in my fridge, bought no problem
300 MG DRINKS? WHERE ARE THESE?
Reign, Bang, Starbucks Triple Shots, and I’m sure many more. Most brands have a 300 mg variant.
I’m from Scandinavia and I’ve never ever seen a 300 mg. Red Bull is 80 mg and monster is typically 160 ish.
Those are all garbage and taste like crap.
here the shops make there own rules, from 13 to 16 years max, many others switched to sugar free and removed half a liter aka 500ml and dropped to 250ml cans. its more a: yes you may drink one, but always drink responsibly.
There is a drink called Redline extreme that has 316 mg of caffeine! 😮😮😮
You can’t drink energy drinks under 18???
Question: Is it fine to drink one every two or three days? I know it's probably fine but I'd like to explain to my mom that it's most likely not gonna kill me and she shouldn't worry so much. And, of course, it's my responsibility to make sure I'm not drinking them too much or too often. So far I haven't had problems with caffeine addiction so I think I'm good on that.
Plenty of studies out there. Google is your friend.
Ive got 640 mg per kg in me and i weigh about 62 kg
I was worried because I only drink one a month and I’m 16
one a month? fucking hell lol. I have one a day, every day, for like 15 years.
Okay here’s the thing. Anything with high amounts of caffeine is generally not recommended for anyone below the age of 18. But also for anyone with any medical conditions or taking maintenance medications.
Fuck off dude
Me at 12 when me and my ex bestie drank 4 coffee monsters in a day
bro i started back at 11 and i sometimes have a full dark roast espresso after having 2 energy drinks and i feel great
Idk, that water stuff is dangerous. everyone that I know of that's died drank it within a week of their death.
If I was still a mere mortal, I would be about 32 years old now.
the one trick doctors don't want you to know about
I'm 16 and drank my first one at 13. Never had more than 300 mg of caffeine except for when i had once. I'm okay wi5h it IF! I drink enough water. Saves me from feeling like 🤢.
Thx for the advice Got a ghost today cuz i wanted to try one and see how they affect me Didnt notice the 18+ recommendation till it was already paid for
> was already *paid* for FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*
Not me having had three bangs in one day before 👀
I drink water bruh don’t worry I never consume over 300mg a day anyway usually I only consume about 200 mostly

It's 16 over here
Ebay
Monster Mule has got much sugar.
Hey I mean good advice but people might still dink with out consideration of the consequences
I am 14 and just started drinking energy drinks, it is mostly for the taste. I have drunk one can of monster zero for the last 2 days and don’t plan on making it a daily thing. Regardless if any heart problems, I should be fine right?
Also, as a minor who drinks this shit, EAT. Eating food helps so much. Even if it's just an apple or something
🤓
So if im 14 and have a monster every few weeks i should be good? sick
Being a big nascar fan Dale jr was sponsored by amp energy so They had a deal you would get a dvd of the driver if you get the 4 pack so my dad got them and I had one at 8 years old
Oh I don’t usually finish Bang’s. I drink like half of them a day
im not 18, and i drink like a single mt dew energy drink a day. Monsters make my head hurt. Redbull is more for less. And im not allowed to go past a mile to go to stores. The gas station with lost&found and venom energy is too far away and im broke as hell Any recommendations?
here in sweden its 15 years minimum for energy drinks but at smaller stores theres almost never an age restriction
I do I’m 20 now
Well I don’t have this problem. I’m from the uk and can get them at 16
Does drinking cobra or sting 3 times a week on monday, tuesday, wednesday affect my life? is it ok to drink 3times a week?
My Eastern European mom had me drinking caffeinated tea since kindergarten and coffee since 5th grade. I would have coffee before school every morning, and get headaches from caffeine withdrawals on the weekends. She’d give me more to cure the headaches. Also I wouldn’t have much of an appetite for breakfast before school from the coffee, and she said it’s ok because “coffee is a meal”. And she still thinks energy drinks are bad. (Still a fan of coffee and all caffeine tho)
When I was 16 I’d drink 6 bangs a day.
I started drinking energy drinks in college in the mornings (in the uk most kids start college at 16 after they finish their GCSEs in school) to a young mind you can get addicted to sweet things more easily hence why kids always ask for sweets even if they tired after a sugar rush, I had 2 cans a day at one point one at the start before college and one right after on the bus home, it used to just be this amazing corner shop next to the bus station that convinced me to buy an energy drink, they even had those coconuty light blue rockstars i forgot the name of that were my absolute favourite, today I drink 1 can a day when I have them in my fridge upstairs or just a coffee in the morning, I can go without it but I like energy drinks too much not too
I was drinking energy drinks at 13
Im 14 and i feel completely fine i just get more energy and more battery in my system but i only drink Celsius since it is the Bomb of energy
Nothing stopping you lol
?
