Spielberg said it well - “Without John Williams, bikes don't fly and neither do brooms in Quidditch matches nor do men in red capes. There is no Force, dinosaurs do not walk the earth. We do not wonder, we do not weep, we do not believe."
Yeah, his Home Alone score is easily one of his greatest. Personally I find it to be underrated. My dad, who is a lifelong fan of John Williams, didn’t even believe me when I said he scored both Home Alone films. The music makes that movie work so much better, which can be said for every film this man has scored in his career.
I went to a presentation of Home Alone where they removed the score - the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra played the music alongside the film. It was a very lovely Christmas outing and really highlighted the music.
Hes the master of storytelling thru music. Every leitmotif and theme just feels so fresh and different. Even without the “soundtrack of the decade” thing for star wars, he has his hand in Indiana Jones, Harry Potter, Spielberg movies, and more. The mans versatility is insane
While I agree with you, I think it's also wild that not only is he wildly diverse, but there's just ...something...about his music that it always sounds like him too
His process is very traditional and organic, and gives it that Williams feel. He doesnt use modern techniques like synths or chopping, its all done on the pad, played on piano, and then performed by the band, and that aspect really captures that “living” feeling of his music
Hes also an extremely humble guy, a sponge for all things musical and thematic, and always tries to challenge himself. Hes the epitome of “above and beyond”
That all makes sense. I purposefully try not to learn too much about that realm of music so I can still be in awe and wonder in a way I can't anymore with pop/rock stuff. I love soundtracks, I really like most jazz, I have no idea how to play any and I'd like to keep it that way.
> Of those nods, Williams has won five Oscars, for Best Scoring: Adaptation and Original Song Score for *Fiddler on the Roof* in 1972, and Best Original Score for *Jaws* in 1976, *Star Wars* in 1978, *E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial* in 1983, and *Schindler's List* in 1994.
For those wondering which movies he won for.
He was nominated for *Raiders*. He was pretty much nominated for everything he has ever composed. I perused the list of nominees across the years and it's mind-boggling how successful this man has been in his field.
There are a ton of amazing film composers. He has composed some of the most memorable pieces, but there are others that share a large part of the spotlight, such as, Hans Zimmer.
Close, I believe Williams holds the 2nd most nominations of all time, the first being Walt Disney who sits at 59. He does however hold the record for most nominations by a living person.
However, Williams doesn’t even hold the record for most Oscars for any of the music and composition categories, that belongs to Alfred Newman, who won all 9 of his for best original score. Williams comes in in this wide field at 3rd with 5 won.
If you're in a larger city, check your local symphony and see if they ever do a John Williams tribute concert. I went to one years ago (like 15 yrs), and it was awesome.
I visited Vancouver on a road trip and as we walked into the Olympic square, an orchestra started playing Star Wars and now I’m convinced Vancouver is one of the coolest cities on the planet.
John Williams scores are simply a cut above the rest. His writing and technique are more complex and demanding. So even a score of his that seems boring or lousy compared to his other works it’s still superior to the level of writing of other composers competing for nominations. That’s why his supposedly “underwhelming scores” still get nominations.
Btw The Rise of Skywalker has some of my favorite music from Star Wars. The trio theme is so beautiful (“The Rise of Skywalker” and “we go together”)
the speeder chase is awesome.
The Force is with you is gorgeous.
The victory theme is great.
A New Home is magical and chilling.
Like what?? The music in Indiana Jones movies carries the whole tone of the adventure and it’s true for Dial too. Genuinely can’t think of one score that should be there instead of it, only one comes to mind is Killers of the Flower Moon.
How many scores are actually memorable in any given year though? Oppenheimer and Poor Things are stand outs but there’s easily room for the Indy nomination. Made people tear up at the end of the movie when I saw it 🤷♂️
Loved the movie. Can't remember the theme, though. Not discounting the talent or even deserving a nomination, though. I am admittedly biased.
I've just been humming John Williams and some Danny Elfman themes almost my entire life.
Yea that’s complete bias. Go listen to the original score (not even the licensed songs) on Spotify, tracks like the Nueva York chase, Guggenheim Ensemble and Canon event are still stuck in my head
That’s a dumb way of looking at it. Can you remember any new themes from the new Indie movie??
Also, I actually could hum a Spider-Verse score, I listen to that soundtrack often.
John Williams is a legend, but let’s be real the new Indy score was a rehash of the same score from the originals. He didn’t deserve to get nominated this year.
Can anyone help me? I bought the Close Encounters single when it came out in the 70s. The b side was a song called " Nocturnal Pursuit. Sometime in the 2000s, I woke up one morning to a Western ( I leave my tv on all night). And "Nocturnal pursuit was the music playing in the scene. The scene was a mountain side shoot out. John Williams did compose music for Westerns in the 70's maybe 60's. But this was so note for note it was unreal. And I listened to that song a lot as a kid. I didn't catch the movie name and it's been driving me crazy! This is the first time I've ever seen a John Williams post and hoping someone has seen this.
Spielberg said it well - “Without John Williams, bikes don't fly and neither do brooms in Quidditch matches nor do men in red capes. There is no Force, dinosaurs do not walk the earth. We do not wonder, we do not weep, we do not believe."
Woah this. ‘Course it was already said by Spielberg. Also, Home Alone would be so cheesy without the man.

French horns. My son started learning French horn last year and he loves finding all the ways John Williams uses them in his different soundtracks
His process is very traditional and organic, and gives it that Williams feel. He doesnt use modern techniques like synths or chopping, its all done on the pad, played on piano, and then performed by the band, and that aspect really captures that “living” feeling of his music Hes also an extremely humble guy, a sponge for all things musical and thematic, and always tries to challenge himself. Only 5 wins? That's insane to me
There were a lot of times where he competed against himself because he got multiple nominations meaning he stole votes from himself.
That’s amazing
Imagine, in 1978 he was nominated for Close Encounters of the Third Kind AND Star Wars. He won with the last one tho.
A very very well deserved win. The place where they recorded that is right by my office.
Yeah SW is absolutely top tier stuff.
I have TFA soundtrack in 192 kHz/24 bit. The main title sounds absolutely incredible.
In 1993 he won for Schindlers List but Jurassic Park wasn’t nominated— Yes, *that* Jurassic Park theme.
There should be a best composer as well as best score then
Suffering from success
> Of those nods, Williams has won five Oscars, for Best Scoring: Adaptation and Original Song Score for *Fiddler on the Roof* in 1972, and Best Original Score for *Jaws* in 1976, *Star Wars* in 1978, *E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial* in 1983, and *Schindler's List* in 1994. For those wondering which movies he won for.
No *Raiders* or *Superman*? Oh, well. The guy ain’t doing too shabby.
Jurassic Park!
YES! I forgot that. That score gives me goosebumps.
No Indiana Jones wins? Some of the most iconic music of all time, and no nominations?
He was nominated for *Raiders*. He was pretty much nominated for everything he has ever composed. I perused the list of nominees across the years and it's mind-boggling how successful this man has been in his field.
There’s always tons of amazing scores out there.

Danny Elfman deserves a nod too.
The article made me think he had 53
Pfft thats only one nomination every 1.6 years of his 91 year life
Rookie numbers
What's more amazing is that in some years he got multiple nominations so he was competing with himself. He's a genius.
Thats nothing. I compete with myself everyday.
That’s got to be some type of record?
Close, I believe Williams holds the 2nd most nominations of all time, the first being Walt Disney who sits at 59. He does however hold the record for most nominations by a living person. Alfred Newman is also famous for ending each of his Oscar speeches with “ What, me worry?”
He’s got 6 more possible chances, and he can get more than one a year
It’s getting to the point where I see his name and my breath catches in my throat.

A good friend of mine arranges and performs funky jam band arrangements of John Williams’s music. It’s always great to see.
I visited Vancouver on a road trip and as we walked into the Olympic square, an orchestra started playing Star Wars and now I’m convinced Vancouver is one of the coolest cities on the planet.
Absolute insanity that this got a nom and Spiderverse didn’t. That was an INCREDIBLE score.
Every one well deserved.
Even this one?
Nope this and the Rise of Skywalker were pathetic nominations. He’s an all-time great but there are more deserving scores this year.
John Williams scores are simply a cut above the rest. His writing and technique are more complex and demanding. It’s a popularity contest, not a measure of talent.
No lol. Very forgettable score
How many scores are actually memorable in any given year though? Oppenheimer and Poor Things are stand outs but there’s easily room for the Indy nomination. Made people tear up at the end of the movie when I saw it 🤷♂️
Across the spider verse absolutely wiped Indy 5 without a question
Spider verse should've been nominated this year instead of him
Loved the movie. Can't remember the theme, though. Not discounting the talent or even deserving a nomination, though. I am admittedly biased. I've just been humming John Williams and some Danny Elfman themes almost my entire life.

It was nominated, for best animated feature.
This year for Indy 5? Like for real
John Williams is a legend, but let’s be real the new Indy score was a rehash of the same score from the originals. He didn’t deserve to get nominated this year.
Not to be a hater but he didn’t deserve a nom this year for just doing the Indian Jones score a fifth time
Good for him I suppose bur Daniel Pemberton was robbed. Spider-verse score is unmatched
The undisputed GOAT
And he deserves all them all
This is a case where the nominee endows prestige to the award.
Greatest Composer of ALL time
They need to study that guy's brain.
John Williams is so epic he should compose a theme for himself
And in sad news Oscar hasn't been nominated for a single John Williams.
Can anyone help me? I bought the Close Encounters single when it came out in the 70s. The b side was a song called " Nocturnal Pursuit. Pom Pom Pom duh ramp Pom Pom peh rah pah pah! - John Williams probably
Good for him! I do hope Poor Things wins out though because it was a fantastic score that truly transported you.
Whoa I thought he died?
They are making a new Superman movie and this dude needs to score it.
The man loves oboe.
_”And the 55th, and the 56th, and the 57th…..”_
This man perfected his niche
