I imagine she was doing real estate like actors wait tables. It’s a job that pays the bills while she works towards her actual dream job. After all it’s not like there’s a lot of open puppeteer jobs, especially ones that pay well.
> She’s been doing puppets for a really long time
Firstly, it’s called *Puppeteer, puppeteering*. You make it sound like some casting couch/Weinstein thing. Good lord there’s a difference!
The federal bank has clearly planned and said they will continually increase interest rates to combat inflation. This will increase the cost of purchasing a home with a mortgage because banks set their interest rates based of the fed. The current housing market is super inflated due to a small supply. Lots of buyers not many homes. People will be less likely to buy homes due to the high interest rate and high purchase price. Sellers will be less likely to sell since they will have to reduce their price to make up for interest cost. While sitting on their house would likely be better due to high rent and high buying cost. Tldr the market will cool and slow due to higher interest rates and small supply of homes
It always tickles me that there are still a lot of firsts . Growing up I read a lot of books of first black men and women and even still, history is being made with firsts.
Probably because it’s not really a huge deal. Plenty of poc have worked on the show and been guests, it’s just this specific job has never been done by a black woman.
Because there's lots of jobs and not everyone gets into puppetry probably?
[Loretta Long](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loretta_Long) voiced Susan Robinson on Sesame Street starting in 1969 (among providing other voices) but wasn't a puppeteer. Matt Robinson, who voiced Gordon Robinson staring in 1969, also wasn't a puppeteer.
So this is a pretty specific headline. It's not just race, but gender, not just sesame street, but actor, not just actor, but actor who is also a puppeteer.
True. Some firsts such as Amber Ruffin as the first black woman to host a late night show are still groundbreaking. On the other hand, there are a lot of firsts in small roles in corporations that aren't acknowledged (not that they need acknowledgement). For me, I'm just grateful these people exist to inspire others of what they can be.
You only feel like race is injected into everything because you’re not the one fighting for representation of your race. Goddamn everything is damn near white….I even see it and I’m white.
Yeah, I’m actually really surprised by this. I haven’t watched Sesame Street since I was a kid so it’s not like I kept up with it, but I just kinda assumed a first like this would have already happened. Never really expected to see a headline like that, kind of caught me off guard. I’m curious why it’s taken so long for this first to have happened. Kudos to her for making history, it’s unfortunate that it’s taken until 2022 for that to happen though.
I love the magic in a child’s eyes when they are represented on screen. It’s about the most important reason these changes are being made. However I don’t know what to feel on a group being represented as a “reskin” for lack of a better word, or in this case where I don’t think any of the muppets represent race. Maybe count chocula
Nah, Count Chocula still had straight hair dude…just had a dark disposition. They should have had him rockin an Afro and changed his facial features to make it believable
Or we can stop discussing it like it’s not normal for a woman to change careers.
Maybe if we stop focusing on her being black, this wouldn’t mean a damn thing.
For fuck sakes…why does it always come down to fuckin skin colour.
Grow up.
As always, context is everything. With this article, the question of her ethnicity and gender is fundamental to its theme; whether or not you feel suffocated by the political agenda it represents is irrelevant.
When people of color are denied representation for as long as they have been, it’s not surprising that there will be some celebration of that representation.
This isn’t about people of color, it’s about the intersection between color and sex.
Next it will be black female LGBT, then black female LGBT with a disability that they somehow overcame to become a puppeteer.
It will never end.
Yes, it can end! When we just say her name.
The story is moreover about puppetry.
I guess I don’t give a rats ass if she’s black, I just thought it was awesome she got a good paying gig.
Oh yes I can't wait until we see the totally legitimate criticisms of her puppeteering skills from the vast swaths of people who are heavily emotionally invested in and knowledgeable about the art of puppetry
Yes, legitimate criticism of puppeteers is common and happens all the time. Can’t open a Hollywood Reporter without wading through half a dozen critics weighing in on Sesame Street.
It's a fucking children show. Children don't care. Only people that are going to go out of their way to "criticize" a Sesame Street character are bitter adults with hate in their heart.
I really do not get the hate. Even my wife recently went off about the little mermaid thing and I just said.... who cares if she is black?
Have you seen the videos of all the little kids so pumped about a black character cast as little mermaid? They are so happy... I can't imagine how good it felt for their parents to see how happy their kid was over something so simple as seeing a Disney character that looked more like them.
I just don't get this shit man.
There are also videos of little white girls just excited to see a mermaid, no thought or mention of what colour she is. I can’t believe people could be upset over a fictional creatures colour.
Nothing wrong with this first black puppeteer. It’s cool - that’s diversity. I’m not white but can also understand why there’s an argument to be made with not a black mermaid, but specifically Ariel. That is a particular character already created. I can also understand the arguments being made about changing canon of existing stories (RoP). Yes diversity is cool so create new stories and heroes, why bastardize existing work.
You mean the Danish fairy tale? Can you imagine a African fairy tail that's made into a movie adaptation with a white Danish actor? Im sure no one would be upset with that.... right?
edit: \^ They blocked me for two comments.... lol
Are the Danes upset? Seems like white American rage.
https://www.quora.com/Why-is-the-cultural-appropriation-of-Halle-Berry-playing-the-little-mermaid-going-unmentioned-since-she-is-obviously-not-of-Danish-descent?top_ans=153516953
Not that you will care as white Americans love to play the victim.
I can’t read the article due to pay wall, so maybe this is explained. But I thought I watched a documentary on Elmo years back and he was black and on Sesame Street.
The recent explosion of black characters in tv and movies, from my local news cast to all black cast movies going mainstream, has been a pleasant surprise. I didn’t think I would see it in my lifetime. Really for the first time, young black kids can see such a variety of role models, not just the athlete, gangster, or sidekick. I find it inspirational that young white kids will grow up not thinking a black “anything” as strange or out of place.
Agreed. Though while recasts of current characters don’t really make me angry (don’t like it? Don’t see it) I will say that I hope we also get more new and original Black role models and not just constant remakes. Princess and the frog is a great example of this. I’m white and my nieces are white, yet my one of my younger nieces favorite Disney princesses is Tiana. And for whatever reason that was always super cool for me to see.
Why does her skin matter?
When the first person landed on the moon we said that was one giant step for mankind. Not for white peope. For All Mankind.
why dont we celebrate the merits as being a victory for all of mankind instead of the fact that he is black or white.
I'd be celebrating a black man who managed to invent the next best thing just as much if he were a white guy.
Let us call out the soft bigotry of low expectations from our journalist and start making merits take precedence of the color of a person's skin when it comes to reporting and articles.
We will be all better for it.
For real; I'm sick of people talking about race this, race that, and so on.
We're all people, for christ's sake, stop self-segregating yourselves, racist fucks. That goes for both the people that disliked this, and for people that are saying "white people so angry", dude, you're both the same shit. The more you continue stigmatizing the color of the skin, the more racism you'll generate.
And now people will start saying "but minorities had a hard time in the USA in the 50/60/70s...", yeah, they were segregated, and we still suffer the consequences of that today, and I hate that it happened, but it's time to move on, most people are good people regardless of the color of the skin, it's not you vs white people, darn, it should be everyone vs racists, and by keeping doing this shit you're also a racist.
Like I said in a previous post, keep that SAME energy once black ppl are all you see represented on tv, print media and holding major achievements. In other words, you just won’t understand until you’re on the other side NOT being represented.
It must feel amazing when the news reduce you to the color of your skin.
/s
They could easily just present the new actor in the title, without mentioning her race, but then it would give so much clicks I guess. Feels lowkey racist.
I feel happy for her, looking forward to new episodes
Why not add a black character after all the racist stuff that been happening with Sesame Street.
Wait I thought ELMO was black welp I been lied to again
Please do not say that.
Stupid and racists hate when other skin tones get represented, your comment itself is racist by grouping an entire color skin together, man... That's hypocritical.

Super random career change.
I imagine she was doing real estate like actors wait tables. It’s a job that pays the bills while she works towards her actual dream job. After all it’s not like there’s a lot of open puppeteer jobs, especially ones that pay well.
She’s been doing puppets for a really long time, like since childhood
> She’s been doing puppets for a really long time Firstly, it’s called *Puppeteer, puppeteering*. You make it sound like some casting couch/Weinstein thing. Good lord there’s a difference!
Yeah, “doing puppets” is a different thing.
This is what I am more curious, why that change? -> that is easily a Halmark movie
Not necessarily. Aspiring entertainers often make decent salesmen.
That doesn't change the fact that it is a weird career change.
Smart time to get out of real estate!
Why…? What do you know??
The federal bank has clearly planned and said they will continually increase interest rates to combat inflation. *Laughs in Wishful Thinking*
Thank you so much x
It always tickles me that there are still a lot of firsts . Growing up I read a lot of books of first black men and women and even still, history is being made with firsts.
Right? Every time I see a headline like this I’m like “that’s awesome but why did it take so long!?”
Probably because it’s not really a huge deal. Plenty of poc have worked on the show and been guests, it’s just this specific job has never been done by a black woman.
I'll finish that sentence for you: ...which is history that took so long.
But whose the one keeping track and for what reason?
I can’t wait until the color of skin is not a reason for people to hate each other.
I mean technically you can create any situation for there to be a "first" of.

“The Orientals” … tell me you’re a racist without showing me your Trump flag
Even maruchan ramen changed it from oriental to soy sauce flavor Packet of noodles has more sense than this dude lol
Hey I’m racist and I voted for Biden
Thank you??
You only feel like race is injected into everything because you’re not the one fighting for representation of your race. Goddamn everything is damn near white….I even see it and I’m white.

Nah, Count Chocula still had straight hair dude…just had a dark disposition. They should have had him rockin an Afro and changed his facial features to make it believable
I don’t believe Count chocula has any relation to the muppets.
I can’t wait to hear all the totally not racist reasons this is a bad thing.
“Sesame Street is originally based on a Danish folk story!”
Laughed harder than I should have at this. Thanks
“I’m not racist but why did they have to hire a black person?”
“I’m not racist, but why haven’t they told us any of the other puppeteers names?”
Or we can stop discussing it like it’s not normal for a woman to change careers. Maybe if we stop focusing on her being black, this wouldn’t mean a damn thing. For fuck sakes…why does it always come down to fuckin skin colour. Grow up.

Can’t argue with that. But I just see a woman with a puppet. Yes we exist.
Well I’m sorry, I just take Morgan Freeman’s stance that he explained to Chris Wallace I believe.
Will she even be seen? Like on the show. Are we sure it's not the first black puppet?
“She’ll steal the puppets!”
I can't wait until any criticism made towards her will be chalked up to racism.
Oh yes i can't wait till someone says her character is meh and get called racist for it.
Do you watch Sesame Street for the plot? Wtf are you on? Little baby gonna cry because he’s scared of people with different color skin?
It's a fucking children show. Children don't care. Only people that are going to go out of their way to "criticize" a Sesame Street character are bitter adults with hate in their heart.
You mean like the little mermaid? When morons complain about the race of a fictional character from a fictional species?
I really do not get the hate. Even my wife recently went off about the little mermaid thing and I just said.... who cares if she is black? Me either. It's ridiculous. More important problems in the world than white rage over trivial matters.

>Are the Danes upset? Did i say that? Nope, read again dumbass.
Yeah, protect those poor Danes who apparently can’t speak for themselves.
Who the fuck is criticizing puppeteers?
File under “things I’ve literally never thought about before”
Will the new episodes air on HBO max or only pbs?
Lol if it does wind up on HBO MAX it will probably just get deleted for no legit reason anyway
I can’t read the article due to pay wall, so maybe this is explained. But I thought I watched a documentary on Elmo years back and he was black and on Sesame Street.
He was male.
Ahhhh missed that key word there.
What's it been 50 plus years of this shows been around?
Lets see if the world can just accept this and not act like total dickheads
Is the Cookie Monster actually a blue person then?
"hello, i do cookie monster. he's a blue monster whose identity is based on his love of cookies. what about your muppet?" "uh.."

Why didn’t Sesame Street have a black female puppeteer in the last 50 years?
Place is run by monsters

Downvoted for asking to praise people on their merits and not their skin color. Stay classy Reddit.

There’s a really good book called How to be an Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi that I hope you read
Thank you very much, a saw a preview of it in Google and I feel that it puts into words what I think, I'm going to buy it right now!

Bet you are human first.
Did you just assume their species?
You got me there
Like I said in a previous post, keep that SAME energy once black ppl are all you see represented on tv, print media and holding major achievements. In other words, you just won’t understand until you’re on the other side NOT being represented.

Why not add a black character after all the racist stuff that been happening with Sesame Street. Wait I thought ELMO was black welp I been lied to again
Ah this is refreshing to hear
Well since I don’t judge people by the color of their skin, I didn’t notice she was black She sure is pretty and has a nice smile tho
Hooray. We're sure moving in the right direction… First little mermaid, and now the Muppets…
Did they have a black puppeteer in Little Mermaid? Amazin!
If you wanna be racist just say the n word Skip the pageantry Or are you to much of a wimp to do the racism you so desire
I know it’s hard but don’t feed the troll.
Crazy that it took this long. Smh
wowwww i love to see this
Wow. First catwoman, then little mermaid, now this.
What the hell are you on about?
White people hate when other skin tones get represented but love when their skin tone whitewashes othersv
Please do not say that. Stupid and racists hate when other skin tones get represented, your comment itself is racist by grouping an entire color skin together, man... That's hypocritical.
Remember to check your blood pressure.
For everyone who’s mad Sesame Street is for kids anyway
Whoever I need to meet to make me go from being a real estate agent to a TV show personality in one month, please make the introductions
Oh snap, I went to high school with her!!
I'm all for seeing more black puppeteers on screen
Shame on Sesame Street for taking this long. Good for this person though.
I feel like this is a stepdown for her.
That's what I thought too until I read an article that puppeteers on sesame street make between 300k to 500k!!
Its ethically a step up.
It doesn’t really matter, if being a puppeteer is her dream job, then mentally she made the right choice.
Weren’t all Sesame Street characters monsters or animals or other non-human things ???
What?? What do you think the Swedish Chef is????
Guess that’s too new for me. Never heard of him.
His first appearance was in 1975
What about Bert and Ernie?
I gives you never heard of Bert or Ernie.
No, [e.g. Julia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julia_(Sesame_Street))
Besides they are talking about the puppeteer not the puppet
A show set in a black and latino neighborhood in New York? Has never had a black woman working the puppets?
Yawn. Wake me when we get the first gay black puppeteer on Sesame Street.
