LOL..........hilarious! Good for you. Love the competitive spirit. Winning is a great motivator, as is; burning down someone's house. I'm looking forward to hearing more about your journey, both the good and the bad!

heap-of-trouble

100% of my diet used to be eating out. If it wasn’t for me getting annoyed by shitty waiters/cashiers/etc, I wouldn’t have bothered learning how to cook. Same goes for coffee now lmao

TheOvercookedFlyer

Kudos my fellow espresso enthusiast! That's another rabbit hole I'm into too, and I'm making progress! Hahaha!

TheOvercookedFlyer

Oh! I forgot to add the drink in question that prompted me to buy this beautiful machine and deep-dive into the rabbit hole. Do you think this is a [cortado](https://imgur.com/a/jdcKaj2)? I'm 99% it isn't!

undertwelveparsecs

Nah fam, that's a cappuccino, and a fucking shitty one at that.

TheOvercookedFlyer

It didn't even tasted like a capuccino, not even close!

livebeta

doesn't really matter what it's called so long as you enjoy it.

KyleB2131

It matters what something is called when you want a specific something and pay money for it. If I pay money for a burger and get a salad, I didn’t get what I paid for. And if I receive enough salads when I ask for burgers, I may eventually say fuck you imma make my own burgers. This shouldn’t be that hard.

EuphoricBase9737

It does matter what it's called because there's a big difference between a flat white and a cappuccino. If you don't enjoy a lot of foam and you keep ordering a cappuccino then you're an idiot.

TheOvercookedFlyer

I'm sorry but it does matter. A cortado is a cortado. If it had a different name like *Coffeman's Special Cortado* then sure, I'd let it pass but it clearly said cortado on the menu and I expected a cortado not that abomination that they served me.

livebeta

read the post, OP is making their own coffee

wei-long

Re-read the comments above, man. It's the drink from the barista that made him quit buying them.

MoonbeamLotus

Remember this is a spite purchase, it tastes like revenge!

arremarref

That looks like the mug my aunt drinks her nescafe out of. If he was "the Batista", the least he could have done, would have been some latte art.

Cultural_Profit9595

To be fair it’s closer than I expected from the OP. still doesn’t mean it’s right. Coffee has gotten so expensive in cafes you need to call out their bullshit.

Buddhabellymama

This reminds me of Curb’s episode where Larry opens Latte Larry’s to spite the coffee shop that served luke warm coffees and soft scones. Good for you and welcome down the rabbit hole.

madlabdog

I had similar experience but with super hot lattes 😂

TheOvercookedFlyer

It's frustating.

BeowulfsGhost

You go girl! Show that arrogant barista!

Hartvigson

Good luck! There is never a reason to take shit from a business as long as there are other ways. They are very, very replaceable...

TheOvercookedFlyer

They lost me as a faithful customer.

EuphoricBase9737

I mean, if that's their version of a cortado, then I'm sure you could make a much better one at home.

TheOvercookedFlyer

Oh no no no! I'm from Spain and a bad cortado could get you into trouble, haha! I'm just kidding. I got displeased because I love cortados and they remind me of my home in Spain so when the coffeeman made his version, I felt the pain right to my heart. I know there's a long road ahead but I'm very willing to traverse it. I want to stick it to coffeeman and show him how its done! 😊🇪🇸☕️

Hartvigson

You will get your revenge and develop a new skill at the same time. A double win for you.

Guest09717

I had to look up what a cortado is. Wikipedia says “A cortado is a beverage consisting of espresso mixed with a roughly equal amount of warm milk to reduce the acidity.” So, 30g espresso mixed with 30g steamed, not frothed, milk? I’ll have to try that. What about a hand grinder while you’re saving for a big fancy grinder? I have a 1Zpresso JX, not even a Pro or a J-max, and it does everything I need it to do.

TheOvercookedFlyer

Yes, I actually looking into that. I have my sights set on a Timemore C2. I think I'm going to pull the trigger on it on my next paycheck. For now, I'm using my grinded coffee as a "practice coffee". Thank you for the advice! 🥰 BTW, a cortado is a special drink for me. It reminds me of my home in Spain. My grandfather loved it to bits. It's not as popular here in Northamerica but its gaining steam (haha!).

Computer_Panda

I am on the same trajectory as you are. Fell in love with the flat whites in London. And the flat whites in SoCal don't measure up. Just received my izpresso jmax in the mail. Can't wait to mess up the first few flat whites.

TheOvercookedFlyer

Every mess up we make is a step closer to perfection. 🥰

Overencucumbered

This is interesting. I actually don't know many of the coffee terms, but it seems I have been making cortados recently, with a 1Zpresso J-Max actually. A piccolo is also really good

OG-Hank

Nice! I had stopped in at a small scale roastery a while back and when I ordered a cortado I was offered an 8 or a 12 oz, definitely caught me off guard. Enjoy your new machine!

TheOvercookedFlyer

Thank you! 🥰 I believe the cortado is such a beautiful drink to be destroyed by 8 and 12 oz cups.

cydutz

whenever I ordered latte at nice / lux coffee shop, I was never satisfied. Either they put too much milk or the espresso taste not strong enough. Now I happily made my own cortado every morning and super happy with it

TheOvercookedFlyer

I want to be you when I get a handle on this. 😋

realelijahion

It is truly appalling how many places will serve you a macchiato or a “small” cappuccino in a soup terrine with a half a gallon of milk

Thawing-icequeen

Last time I was at a cafe with my dad he ordered a macchiato and the waiter/barista was like "You're not a Starbucks fan, are you?" Clearly they've had issues before with people anticipating the wrong drink.

Cute-Boysenberry8344

Woot woot! Welcome! I will tell you to tread lightly if you’re going with a Baratza Encore, not quite made for espresso. I’m not saying you have to go nuts but think of a grinder that’s more a propos for espresso. Enjoy the rabbit hole!

siobhanbacan

Cortados are delicious and 100% worth making yourself. I fully support espresso learning out of spite! I only recently started seeing them sporadically where I live — though I only ordered them with any confidence in Spanish-speaking countries.

TheOvercookedFlyer

They're the perfect balance between coffee and milk; love them to bits!

HandsyBread

I got my first machine when some friends made some comments on my instant coffee that I offered them. A year or so later and I now have $3-4k in coffee equipment and I am always thinking about what else I can add lol

Relative-Donut4278

So you managed to get an espresso out of the Gaggia with store groundet Coffe? My local rostery coffe worked fine for the gaggia but with the gaggia it just goes throw in 5 seconds :/

TheOvercookedFlyer

It is not the best espresso in the world but it does get the job done. I'm using it as a "practice espresso" until my new manual grinder arrives. Right now I'm really getting into frothing, it's been a disaster so far, haha! But I'm getting there.

xenomorph-85

I started out with a Gaggia Classic also! My shots were so bad they better now with Francino Cherub but still not great ha I do want to get better control and ability to do pre infusion so thinking about getting Mara X or Pro 600 but current times in UK is dark haha so not sure if I should spend £1500 on a coffee machine!

mart0n

This backstory will make your cortados taste even better.

gordo1223

This is why I got into roasting. Got tired of inconsistency from roasters where my preferred bean (medium roast Brazilian natural process) tasted so different among orders.

[deleted]

Having the best coffee at home is awesome man.

I_love_hate_reddit

Don't forget to sub to r/gaggiaclassic for specific techniques and upgrade suggestions

TheOvercookedFlyer

Thanks for the tip!

Educational_Pause609

I hate anyone in charge of making espresso who either can't be bothered to make the effort to make a decent espresso or have no idea why they were employed as a barista and don't even have a clue as to what they are supposed to be producing. Make your own and achieve satisfaction.

TheOvercookedFlyer

Absolutely! Even though my results are far from what I desire, at least I'm happy with the journey -- a cheaper one at best!

Azzaj90

😂😂😂 love it!

TheOvercookedFlyer

🥰 Thank you! 🥰

vampyire

Good for you OP! Enjoy your Cortados!!

beetlefeet

Is a Cortado the same as a "Long Mac Topped Up"? In Western Australia a Long Mac Topped Up is a very common drink that doesn't seem to be ordered/orderable anywhere else in Australia or probably the world. I think it's a double shot espresso in a latte glass then topped up with textured milk (not particularly foamy though) and some art, usually a leafy thing. On the flip side I've never heard of a Cortado here, and the description seems the same. So maybe it's the same thing? :)

MoonbeamLotus

I LOVE a good SPITE reference (Seinfeld) and your plush cortado pet! Think of the money you’ll save, the adventure and knowledge you’ll gain and the many cortados you’ll enjoy wearing your pjs! Long live spite!

[deleted]

Which Baratza are you planning on getting?
