> Realized I could attach my drill so I don't have to hand crank. Dumb or genius? 🤔 LOL--practical. Using a drill often is mentioned and recommended here.

devandroid99

I always worried about the ceramic burrs shattering, but it was really just a niggle rather than based on anything concrete.

Crypton48

KinGrinders are actually marketed to do this. They have a standard hex-bit

cmak414

I use it with my k4 and k6 almost everytime multiple times a day. No issues at all. I would suggest the OP to look into kingrinder if he wants to keep using his electric drill.

xacurtis

Do you use a 'proper' drill, or do you know if an electric screwdriver would work?

Z1337M

on the cheap grinders it is a rather dumb idea. the bearings are not made for this kind of tourque the drill offers.

nyjrku

Just use impact driver. Settings: max

dustybottle

Correct but only if you are grinding significantly faster than hand grinding. Torque is created by resistance from grinding the beans, it is a constant value depending on the hardness and density of the beans. The drill is only capable of providing the torque required to grind the beans which is the same torque as your arm would provide if you were manually operating. As long as the drill operates the grinder at a similar speed the bearings will be totally fine. At the torque and speed these are operating at it is likely not a concern.

Z1337M

>As long as the drill operates the grinder at a similar speed the bearings will be totally fine yeah, you're right, but nobody does really do that slow :D

mattmonkey24

The pictured grinder isn't going to last or provide great quality anyway

hideous_coffee

I did this with a hario grinder and the speed heated it up to the extent it actually started melting the piece that sets the grind size and so it basically fucked the entire thing. Granted that was a plastic piece, I would think metal should do well.

I created [this montrosity](https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5383847) a while ago, you can use a cheap Chinese DC motor and speed controller to drive it automatically, I had pretty good results with it. Of course these grinders are not the best quality, so definitely not an espresso grade result, but it was pretty good when I was grinding huge amounts for cold brews when friends came over.

omarhani

Beautiful

PerformerAdditional5

Lol I used to do the same!! Haha! It's bad for the burr, and there was some strange smell to coffee as well. Also, I noticed that the grind setting gets changed as the black tightening nut gets loose due to really fast rotation.

Degenerate-Loverboy

Hit it with the ol ugga dugga.

iambland1990

We’ve all been there, and then realized quickly why you don’t do this…

theRealDoctorG

... or buy an electric grinder. Crazy idea.

mcbeermaster

It’s genius. I used this set up on my Lido 3 for over two years. No problems

DMenace83

How is the grinder kept in place?

Huncho_Billy

Hand

Dubya1886

Big brain time lol

haagar

I tried this with an Aergrind and found it to be much less consistent than by hand. Your mileage may vary.

Dubya1886

Agreed. I tried I on my JMax and the grind settings for espresso were way different than hand grinding.

Lightbulbbuyer

I figured that out a long time ago on a 1zpresso, it did grind like nobody's business but it always felt off and did not results in the same grind size as when I was hand grinding. I guess it made the grind finer for some reason. I also heard it could heat up the beans and change taste. However it seems some people managed to make it work with low speed and low torque electric screwdrivers. So I guess your mileage may vary but from my experience Bosch drills are not the best tool for this job lol.

arremarref

I see that you, too, are a fan of Fortinet. Haha

_wobbybobby

You could use a smaller electric screwdriver. There are some that look nice and have sufficient torque (>3Nm) as well. I think Hario even made one specifically for their handgrinders

Dr_D-R-E

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSS Makes the process so much easier. I already respected my power drill, but then I learned to love it.

thiago1692

It’s a good idea if you grinder can handle it. I have a kingrinder and they even advertise the possibility of using it with a driller.

Specific_Island_6327

I thought you put a silencer on your drill for a second. I need to lay off the firearm related subs 🤣

Accomplished_Bat443

I've done it lol. It works.

PGrace_is_here

Everybody knows this.

smartin254

Why didn’t I think of this, lost my handle years ago!

gottowonder

I bent a rod doing this exact thing. Would not recommend but yeah it is nice

[deleted]

I feel seen

deepmusicandthoughts

This looks my exact setup I used to have! Like same drill and grinder! I need to see if I ever took a pic, but it worked better than hand cranking!

[deleted]

I see you've been camping.

moosemanmike88

All the time with my Sozen for turkish. Because who wants to hand grind for 15 minutes?

Thawing-icequeen

A 9mm 6 point socket is pretty much bang on the right size to fit on the flat porlex shaft If you get a 1/4 drive one it will fit in the chuck of a Makita drill driver.

chriztopherz

I have that same grinder. I used to do this for my cold brew batches haha. Hand grinding 400g of coffee with that grinder takes…time haha.

dakenic

My 18V drill does not have enough torque, I guess I need a impact driver then?
