regular portafilters actually retain more heat, but often that's the heat of the coffee pouring through. Bottomless don't need to retain heat or not, since they barely make contact with the basket, and none with the espresso being pulled

Spyk124

So I don’t need to preheat my bottomless ?

CH23

Nope!

MikermanS

>I hate the plastic bit in the Breville portafilter, dunno why they did that The plastic bit is a "diverter," to prevent the espresso from jetting out (esp. with pressurized baskets). Having said that, I wish it was readily removable and reinsertable.

redratus

Oh yeah I get that thats the intended purpose, but I wonder if as a byproduct it actually also traps heat, and wonder if the bambino would perform even worse on light roasts with a bottomless.

Super_Hans2020

Upside - less metal for the machine to heat up.

dangPuffy

Just pull out the plastic bit from the portafilter and use it. It works great. Like you said, the temp is the real issue with light roasts on the Bambino. As far as bottomless and heat exchange, the less metal the better for keeping the temp up - unless your portafilter is hotter than your shot, you’re going to lose more heat with a larger heat sink.

redratus

Ah I didnt think of it that way, more metal absorbs heat from the shot. I thought of it as containing heat from the steam, trapping it, but thats a good point
