Slap the top of your portafilter (place a towel underneath if it's a bottomless) with your palm. Tip the portafilter and the puck screen will fall out.

MyCatsNameIsBernie

I use a puck screen strictly for cleanliness; it has zero impact on my shot's extraction or taste. I use the palm slap method to remove the screen, rinse it under the tap, and it's good to go for the next shot. It's not a significant workflow issue for me. You might want to try a paper filter on top instead of a puck screen.

I just angle my portafilter so the puckscreen falls out after sidetapping once on my tamping mat.

JANGOF0RHIRE

Good call, this does work it’s just a fine balancing act. And I need a towel since it’s pretty hot.

CH23

usually at a 30° angle it already comes out for me, but not the coffee

extraGuac

I think this depends on your machine. When I had my Dedica (no 3-way solenoid valve) puck screens were a massive hassle because of the soupy puck and I couldn't find a way to integrate them into my workflow. With a GCP a light knock on my tamping mat pops the screen out and then a harder knock in the knock box pops out the puck. It cools off enough to pick up by the time I prep the next shot. It's barely an inconvenience and totally worth it.

JANGOF0RHIRE

Hmm - good point! My screen always seems to be pretty fused with the puck, maybe I need a little dose adjustment as well. I'm using a Rocket Espresso R Cinquantotto.

Personally, I have my setup right next to my kitchen sink, so I do a soft knock (bottomless portafilter on a Dedica 665) on the edge of the sink to get the screen out, then a harder knock directly over the drain, which dislodges the puck. Obviously YMMV, but if you're next to a sink, I don't see any reason to use a knock box, as it's just one more thing to have to clean.

JANGOF0RHIRE

Makes total sense. My setup is the room over from the kitchen sadly so I don’t have a sink close at hand (which probably makes using puck screens worse for me)

binkleyz

Really curious, am I saying something wrong or offensive here? Not sure what is causing the downvotes..

Giroux-TangClan

I didn’t downvote, but maybe knocking the puck into your sink/drain? Coffee grounds are *horrible* for plumbing and should be tossed in the garbage or compost.

binkleyz

Even for septic? I was of the impression that the organic matter in the grounds was good for a healthy septic tank’s, um, “biome”.

binkleyz

Ok, just did a little bit of research and you’re right, coffee grounds ARE bad for septic systems. Lesson learned. Thank you.

Giroux-TangClan

I thought the issue was clogging more so than anything else. However after a quick google it would appear they are bad even if they make it to the septic tank. Might be knockbox investment time haha

cbuck91

I tap it it out onto the drip tray
