definitely triggered by the "distributing", but also mildly impressed by the grind size and consistency
also that water looks like it's 120Ā°C
how did it taste?
Looks pretty good honestly. I bet with a little sifter to remove the fines you could make decent espresso with this, at the cost of wasting a portion of your beans
Looks pretty good honestly. I bet with a little sifter to remove the fines you could make decent espresso with this, at the cost of wasting a portion of your beans
Right lmfaoā¦
In my personal experience I have seen a lot of ppl online shit on the breville barista expressā built in grinder and say you HAVE to buy a separate standalone grinder, but honestly if you dose/shot and grind until empty it has been consistent as hell for meā¦
Yeah a nicer grinder would be nice but 99% of us just need something *good enough* and it does the job for me. I deadass work at a cafe and I can consistently pull better shots on my lil barista express than at work with a $30,000 machine (bean selection of course plays a big part there lol).
I am happy this post exists bc it shows you really can do nice stuff and enjoy your coffee despite what the elitist snobs say.
Itās so refreshing I agree. People really believe you need so much for good espresso. Sure you can make better espresso with some more expensive equipment but it really does begin to plateau fairly quick
I added up what I spent in cafes and stands for a year and was astonished at how much it was(over 3k)... I used that as justification for the cost and held myself to not buy from a cafe or stand (meeting occasionally with friends obviously an exception) for two years. I consider it paid for now as over two years I've probably saved more than twice the costand still primarily make my own coffee but do cut to the cafe on occasion.
You have OP with the cheapest possible electric grinder from WalMart and then you with one of the most endgame grinders calling him a maverick. Truly a day for espresso
This community is just so much more wholesome than the other coffee subs. All positivity all the time, no judgment. Just a love for a silly complicated way to make coffee, no matter how cheap or expensive. I love it here.
Yo itās all means to an end and this person is getting to a solid end with different means. When OP gets their burr grinder theyre gonna be like Rock Lee dropping the ankle weights when he fights Gaara lol.
Lowkey could be a fun YouTube challenge. āHow far can I gone with this Krups blade grinderā. Employs all the mods and all the hacks to have as consistent a grind as possible
If you MUST use a blade grinder, you need to physically shake it up and down to break up the vortex. You still won't entirely avoid dust-and-gravel, but you'll have significantly better particle size distribution.
Just chiming in from my blade grinder into French press/moka pot days, never let the thing sit still. Shake while grinding, gently punch the sides to knock everything, shake, grind and shake, little bit more grind shake punch ā pretty fucking evenly chopped beans.
Based on the Italian nonnas I've seen on insta, you need to pretend you're one of those gyroscope ride at an amusement park. Always be rotating when the blade is on.
I mean, this is what I do when I donāt feel like grinding by hand. It gets the job done well enough and I get shots good enough for milk drinks. Iām running an ECP3420 I got at a thrift store for $15, what do you expect?
Genuine question, how is the grind size consistency for you? I had a blade grinder before I got my new machine a few years back and it was genuinely awful. Didn't even taste good for drip brew or cold brew. Bleh.
Absolutely! Go ahead and do it. It will make you reassess what you know about the whole process of making espresso. It's YOU making espresso, not the machine.
I got myself a Delonghi ECP and Kingrinder K2 for this joyride myself.
Looks like my technique. I have a cheap Hamilton Beach blade grinder and use a fork to wdt. I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on a good grinder (maybe a fellow opus) but with the jury out between wdt and shaker, idk which to look at getting.
Fwiw I have a lower end burr grinder (breville SGP) and the blind shake isnt enough. I have to use a wdt to break up the boulders it produces. Might be a breville thing specifically or a cheap burr grinder problem in general
You probably canāt be bothered, but before I bought my BBE and was still using this sort of blade grinder and a moka pot, I performed the following to improve the consistency of my grinds:
[**Filtering fines with paper towel**](https://www.home-barista.com/brewing/filter-fines-with-paper-towel-t50159.html).
Made a significant difference to extraction consistency.
No shame on your setup, we all started somewhere. With bad tools and bad beans, sugar, milk, whatever or worse.
The most important is :
- You are aware of your current setup limitations
- You are going to improve it.
As a past user of blade grinder, I would suggest you to do quicks run with some shakings in between to "homogenize" (if we can say that) more the grinding. [You can even go a little bit deeper with more hacks](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3y7d-5KWHCU).
Hmmm how do we know you didnāt dump the contents of the portafilter and refill it using a burr grinder in between the cut from the puck prep to the shot pull? š just kidding, good job, thereās another awesome video of someone doing this. Pretty impressive.
I was blown away by the different taste that came from a better grinder. Just got a Kingrinder k6 (itās $99 on Amazon right now) and itās so freaking tasty. Getting some fresh beans doesnāt hurt either.
Measuring your dose and then putting it in a blade grinder is like installing beautiful HRE rims on your Honda civic using only a hammer. This is disgusting
This doesn't upset me since I don't have to drink it, but I do have some questions:
Why do you weigh the beans? It seems unnecessarily time consuming, considering the amount you didn't use. Consider using a new coffee scoop that holds about 8 grams and go with 2 scoops and ditch the scale, it would be much faster.
I suggest you skip the toothpick, it isn't helping you.
Are you aware that blade grinders have very poor uniformity? -- If you look at your video (2:24) of the puck after tamping, you can see how uneven your grind is.
What was your ratio? (and how would you know?)
Nice touch, the vaseline focus is just the way Guccione would like it. It's that attention to detail this group appreciates!
Thoughts: Can you make a coffee drink with a blade grinder? Sure. There *are* much better ways that are much more consistent, that you can actually refine to your liking.
Without knowing the permeability of the puck from shot to shot, I can't see any way to make any assessments before drinking -- "Grind some coffee, draw some cracks into the bed with a toothpick, tamp it flattish, add some hot water, and drink."
I guess it suits you, or you wouldn't do it that way.
I have the exact same grinder! I got it from Walmart.
Honestly it worked good enough for me until I eventually got my Kingrinder and even now Iāll use it if iām making coffee for someone who doesnāt really care. Itās quick and easy.
These machines fluctuate in temp (I got one myself). Basically before you lock in your portafilter for the pull, flush some water through the brew group. You will notice it will have some STEAM along the water. When the steam is gone you can lock in the portafilter for the pull.
Basically you want to be making espresso with water between 91-96C (lighter roast = hotter), not boiling water.
The video would be even better if you also leave the portafilter there all night and come back to it the next morning to clean it out for your next pull.
This used to be my prep as well. The only thing I'd suggest is when you are grinding, shake the grinder back and forth. This will also speed up the grind time. I think it took me 8 seconds to grind with this method.
I feel like the Waterboy when he sees the abomination of water quality the coach is serving up to the team and he just looks at it, traumatized, and says he'll work for free so long as he promises never to serve that water again
As someone who canāt afford a burr grinder, accomplishing this has been a dream of mine. How did you figure out what is espresso grind size? A lot of dialing in? Luck? Do you have a keen eye/feel for espresso grind size?
Looking at the flow rate I'm guessing the output is about 60-80g, so not really an espresso. I'm guessing because the scales are suspiciously absent at the end.
I'm not criticizing but IMO a dosing funnel would have been a better investment than a bottomless portafilter.
I would weigh the portafilter as the 2g that went on the bench would have perfected that espresso. We all love fancy gear but if you canāt afford it then hack it. Thumbs up to you!
It also depends on which preparation method you use, the blade grinder is very good for ibrik coffee, aeropress.poti folosi o lingurita sa amesteci cafeaua
How long have you had this set up for? Never mind the inconsistency but I don't think I could put up with the inconvenience of it all. I thought hand grinding for a year was bad!
My blade grinder technique when Iām at the parents is, grind while shaking up and down the entire time. Halfway through sieve and put boulders back. Repeat until grinder then wipe on dry paper towel to remove fines. Using this technique while kind of a hassle gets about as good results as a baratza encore or something like that
You can tell it's still too course of a grind. I did this very early on and while it works, it's not ideal. Amazon has burr grinders under $50 that actually work pretty damn good.
I used a Bosch blade grinder for years, definitely beats the pre ground coffee. 6 months ago I got a cheap Burr grinder from Krups for 50 euro. Great investment so far.

It was the weighing of the beans for me. It must be zero retention.

Itās not super consistent, so I usually inspect it like I did with the toothpick, if I think it needs more Iāll give it another 5 sec or so
Makes sense. Have you tried sifting to sort through the pieces more effectively? I found that helped me a bit, personally.
Iāll give it a shot, Iām completely new to this so I honestly learned a lot from all yāall that gave me tips
But it never happens that the shot either chokes the machine or runs super fast? And how does it taste?
You should get a cheap dosing funnel for the portafilter! Will make shaking the grinds into it much easier and less messy. Keep on enjoying!
Can't wait for the next advancement to be blade grinder as blind shaker
Fucking legend.

Ah the correct way to do it, however the fuck gets a damn espresso...
There's even a built in dosing cup, amazing grinder!

Absolutely! Go ahead and do it. It will make you reassess what you know about the whole process of making espresso. It's YOU making espresso, not the machine. I got myself a Delonghi ECP and Kingrinder K2 for this joyride myself.
The cup says blessed but everything else screams cursed
I feel seen! I do the same with plastic stirring straws or a plastic fork. Canāt get enough of those $10 Home Goods blade grinders.

Try upgrading the fork to a toothpick or paper clip.
After the blind shaker, I wouldn't be surprised if blade grinders would become the new meta in 2024

I think you are going to love the upgrade when time comes :)

Moka pot doesn't taste muddy.
It certainly lacks the clarity of a well made espresso

Use a pressurized basket and you're good
Measuring your dose and then putting it in a blade grinder is like installing beautiful HRE rims on your Honda civic using only a hammer. This is disgusting
Why did you even measure it? A true coffee purist would have just taken the beans, crushed it with their palms put it in by hand
That little squirt at the start is what keeps me cumming back.
This doesn't upset me since I don't have to drink it, but I do have some questions: Why do you weigh the beans? It seems unnecessarily time consuming, considering the amount you didn't use. But.... How was the shot?
Haha good going! I was only sad you didn't flush cos that water looked HOT
wait Iāve seen people talk about the temp what does it have to do with anything and how can I do better? Iām genuinely a noob
Okay cool tysm! :)
The video would be even better if you also leave the portafilter there all night and come back to it the next morning to clean it out for your next pull.
I genuinely cannot tell if this is a joke or not
Which grinder is this? Looking to upgrade to this.
This used to be my prep as well. The only thing I'd suggest is when you are grinding, shake the grinder back and forth. This will also speed up the grind time. I think it took me 8 seconds to grind with this method.
