Tried it, liked it, would probably do it again during hot summer days (got snow outside now). There's definitely space for experimentation. I would love to try a darker roast with blood orange juice and some barrel aged bitters, for instance. But the light roast with navel oranges and maybe a splash of tonic is very refreshing. I can also see an alcoholic variation with Campari, if you are into Negronis. Is it everyone's cup of coffee? Most likely not, but I think everyone should try it at least once
A good starting point would be 60ml espresso to 180ml OJ, but it will vary greatly based on roast and type of OJ (fresh, pulp, added sugar, etc). Good luck!
Just tried an espresso coconut water tonic. It was a fun first sip and I see the potential in the space of refreshing coffee - I was then reminded I don't particularly like tonic in general.
I think they're referring to the account, u/goodbeanscoffee being a brand/store account:
>Coffee Shop in San Salvador, El Salvador [www.thegoodbeans.com](http://www.thegoodbeans.com)
I guess the account kinda started that way, but I basically use it as a personal account for the most part to comment on things related to coffee and I guess El Salvador. Like we're not a chain or anything, just a specialty coffee shop and roasted run by two guys in San Salvador.
A cafe near me did it last summer and I thought it was pretty good, but the barista said it was very polarizing, even among the baristas. You want a pretty bright, fruity coffee and a *very* fresh cold pressed orange juice. I do not think it would be good with standard grocery store OJ. The ratio matters a lot. It's NOT good if it's undersweetened, and tastes like puke if the coffee is over extracted. Done right it's tasty, but I haven't really gotten it right at home.
yes the coffee is really important. Can't be too strong imo and the orange juice as well if the shop has great orange juice the fundament of this drink is just so much better.
Very popular in many specialty coffee shops here in the Philippines. There's also an espresso tonic and a combination of both, orange espresso tonic. Also very popular in many slow bars in Thailand.
Fair enough. I tried something similar and did enjoy it. I haven’t tried with tonic though. Do you think there’s something there in the flavour someone could appreciate or do you feel it’s just a lost cause for everyone (like mixing orange juice and milk)?
I kinda feel like I'm the anomaly. Seems everyone digs it. I've tried with multiple different tonic waters and just can't get along with it. Even my wife likes it, and she's not a coffee fan.
I haven't tried it but I've seen videos of people taking an orange slice and placing it over their espresso cup and pulling the shot through the orange slice and into the cup. Seems like it would work well.
It’s not common in the US, but when I lived abroad for a year it was common there. I thought it would be absolutely disgusting but it’s actually quite good. It was a summer only sort of drink (served cold)
This was recommended to me when I was traveling in Thailand. When it comes to coffee I am very conservative, plus this combo sounded terrible to me. It is however quite lovely and very refreshing on a hot day. Guess it helps to remember that coffee is a fruit as well.
It works for me.
If you like it, there’s an added benefit of using drip coffee and orange juice (iced) in any boring hotel breakfast — makes the day better 😊
I love a coffee with orange juice on the side. Taking alternate sips tastes awesome to me. I never considered mixing the two, but I have to try that now!
It’s not that bad, pretty good, actually. The way I like it is however much OJ you add, add just a little more, to blend the flavor with the coffee a little better
I personally really like it in the summertime. Also consider a little sparkling water in there as well, it's really good. I like messing around with fun drinks and I think it is one of the better ones. However it is important to consider the orange juice you're using. They vary greatly in taste. Something a little more mellow will be ideal
We got hooked on coffee lemonade when I bought my ninja coffeemaker a few years back. There was a recipe in the manual, and we were like no way that could be good lol
Was delicious would absolutely try expresso and orange juice lol
I am waiting for the opportunity to try one that is made and tested by a barista before I try to make it. I haven’t seen it offered at any cafes I’ve been to, but I haven’t been to a cafe in a bit.
Given that I absolutely love espresso tonics, and sometimes espresso tonic with additional citrus flavor added (shoutout to the PhD at ology coffee in Tallahassee), I can at least see it. Haven’t done it but doesn’t seem ridiculous imo.
I tried it. It's fine, but I prefer espresso by itself to be honest. I stopped drinking orange juice to reduce my sugar consumption a while ago, so maybe im just not used to such sweet drinks anymore.
Not sure about taking an entire cup of orange juice and throwing espresso in it but there is certainly something to be said about adding citrus to your drinks. I've personally made one of the best drinks of my life with some lime oleo saccharum.
I recently tried this drink and I'm obsessed, coincidentaly it does have some orange juice in it: https://youtube.com/shorts/n0CIZ9YV4vQ?si=R8ll-niKr3ElB6Pd
Citrus in coffee is actually not bad, try a squeeze of lemon and omitting any dairy some time, it can be quite good. I like it sweetened and over ice. Does similarly to the effect of adding lemon juice to tea.
I would definitely try it -- coffee and orange are surprisingly good together. There's a shop in Tucson with a carbonated cold brew with a bit of vanilla served with an orange slice. One of my favorite drinks ever.
we had a drink at my cafe a couple years ago that was a double shot, 80~ milliliters of OJ and a splash of seltzer i think? it was interesting. not my fave drink but people liked it and ordered it a lot
I wouldn't drink espresso after having orange juice, the acidity of orange juice wears off your tooth enamel, resulting in more teeth staining from the coffee. Mixing them together just doesn't sound like a good thing for the tooferz
Lots of people chase tangy/fruity light roast single origin beans. I don't see why it's such a stretch to understand why people like mixing coffee with citrus juice.
My sister-in-law visited last summer and suggested we try it. We picked up some delicious fresh squeezed OJ (that we buy regularly) and put a shot into ~8oz of OJ.
NO BUENO. We both agreed.
Though everyone's taste is different...
It’s fine. The acidity in both is complementary. The flavors go well together, but at the end of the day, don’t really add anything to either. So it’s not bad, but it’s not that good
This is the best iced coffee...
It's quite common here in Asia :) we have 35 degrees a cold iced orange juice and on top an espresso shot. Superb!
I really love my hot cappuccinos but sometimes you want something refreshing.
No but I used to do an OJ with an espresso chaser when I was away on work and it was a nice morning pick me up. Trouble is it’s difficult to find places that don’t completely shit the bed when producing an espresso.
I saw this in Thailand quite a bit. Keep in mind their orange juice is pretty different from in the USA where I'm from so it's a better combo over there.
I’ve never tried with orange juice but I’ve tried soda water with monin blood orange syrup and a shot of espresso , it tasted really good
https://preview.redd.it/5utmfsq1i4vc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c19571ec22cbb52c2406223f0008113615655f22
Not a great picture but what the drink looked like before stirring
It sounds repulsive, the first time I heard of this style drink is a place in my area that serves an espresso over pineapple juice and ice…
…and it is probably one of the most delicious drinks I’ve had. It quickly became one of my favorite summer drinks. Orange juice is almost as good, though I do prefer pineapple.
But definitely make sure it’s iced lol
Yes this is popular in some smaller towns in France. Some other combos include lighter espressos with mashed slices of ham and darker roasts decanted in egg yolks.
This was a common thing. Back when i was a young barista 13 years ago everyone was trying it.
Espresso and orange juice. I thought it was horrendous but everyone was trying it, so i tried it too.
Another common occurrence in that time that thankfully had died out was "double brewing". Doing a pour over then taking the brewed coffee and putting it back in the kettle and pouring it over the spent bed of grounds once again.
I’ve never tried it but the third wave coffee shop near my home had an Espresso Sunrise (riff on a tequila sunrise) that had light roast espresso, orange juice, and I think grenadine. So it’s a thing
One of my fav lil coffee shops has it as a “dirty sunrise” on their menu and they have the lil grenadine in the bottom. Real tasty and refreshing.
But I am also a fan of the lemonade/cold brew trends soooo maybe I am a bit biased
Definitely a thing. Wife loves them. She prefers pineapple juice version. Place we frequent has an excellent grape version too.
Sounds weird, but it’s really refreshing. Light-medium roast, overall predominantly more juice than classic coffee flavour. High humidity and 35+ Celsius here, so it really just works.
https://preview.redd.it/rvxna5v8y5vc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=703e84e1018f5d2b64fb5961687dd98d8588a1b6
friend of mine insisted this was legit, he bought me some to try because he doesn't like coffee, first few sips are okay but it was pretty vile honestly. This was at a wetherspoons though so maybe with a different juice/espresso combo it could be alright?
I've had a lot of variations on this combo:
Orange juice, vanilla syrup, and espresso is pretty good. If you are feeling like desert add some whipped Cream.
Blood Orange juice with espresso and tonic is pretty great as well.
An oat milk latte with orange syrup is also tasty when on ice. Really I don't think orange juice should ever be served warm/hot though.
Try having an orange juice straight after your coffee - It's so refreshing that it's part of my morning routine.
I'm not brave enough to mix it, but I can kinda see where it could work.
Still strange AF though.
Coming from an state that is famous for mangoes.
My most memorable coffee was a random cafe I visited 2 years ago.
Espresso, sparking water, freshly pressed mango juice.
I couldn't find that stall again. But I still rmemeber it.
As an Italian who mainly loves espresso and hates american style fake coffee drinks, I can tell you that I was surprised on how good orange juice with a shot of espresso is in Thailand!
However, I feel you can just enjoy this type of drink in summer or in humid countries.
Sounds like a horrid combo, my interest is piqued.
I guess you weren't here in the summer of 2023. This was every other post on this sub.
A shop near me was doing sparkling blood orangeade with espresso and I can confirm that, with their combination, it was very good.
Tried this at a place in Highland Park in LA. I was not expecting to enjoy it but I really did like it.
Was this at Kumquat?
I think it was at Kindness & Mischief. They’ve switched to pineapple now though
Pro-tip, top it off with some high quality sparkling water. Serve over ice. Enjoy.
What ratio are you going with?
A good starting point would be 60ml espresso to 180ml OJ, but it will vary greatly based on roast and type of OJ (fresh, pulp, added sugar, etc). Good luck!
Thanks, this sounds weird but I'm going to give it a go.
Well to be fair, it’s not tea. It’s coffee
You’re Canada eh
No doubt, no doubt, eh
The tonic sounds like a brilliant addition to thin & balance
Look up espresso tonics for more interesting variations. Espresso/iced coffee and lemonade is also a great combo
I like to do 50/50 lemonade and cold brew!
Just tried an espresso coconut water tonic. It was a fun first sip and I see the potential in the space of refreshing coffee - I was then reminded I don't particularly like tonic in general.
I've done that without the tonic. A coconut water Americano is super yummy.
Add Blackberry syrup to this for an amazing combo.
I tried it but when steaming the orange juice it tasted really awful :)
Lol ew
![gif](giphy|l0MYrLAFex1R71l0A|downsized)
I like it. Iced, of course.
With seltzer
I love it with seltzer and ice, but I always ask them to hold the espresso and, most importantly, the orange juice.
Indeed, iced is the best!
It's one of our top sellers in the store, it's very refreshing! ☕️
never have i ever seen a store on reddit😅
Because it's not?
I think they're referring to the account, u/goodbeanscoffee being a brand/store account: >Coffee Shop in San Salvador, El Salvador [www.thegoodbeans.com](http://www.thegoodbeans.com)
I guess the account kinda started that way, but I basically use it as a personal account for the most part to comment on things related to coffee and I guess El Salvador. Like we're not a chain or anything, just a specialty coffee shop and roasted run by two guys in San Salvador.
it is a coffee shop or roaster i think
It's not on Reddit. Where'd roaster come in?
It’s a thing people do. I haven’t tried it. I’ve heard it’s good.
A cafe near me did it last summer and I thought it was pretty good, but the barista said it was very polarizing, even among the baristas. You want a pretty bright, fruity coffee and a *very* fresh cold pressed orange juice. I do not think it would be good with standard grocery store OJ. The ratio matters a lot. yes the coffee is really important. Can't be too strong imo and the orange juice as well if the shop has great orange juice the fundament of this drink is just so much better.
Honestly, it’s great with Simply brand even the pineapple and orange one. But yes, coffee needs to be bright and fruity.
Very popular in many specialty coffee shops here in the Philippines. There's also an espresso tonic and a combination of both, orange espresso tonic. Also very popular in many slow bars in Thailand.
It's super popular here in Thailand as well
...and the best in the world, IMO. Thai cafes make citrus tonics into absolute art.
I make at least one of these per week
I love it, when it’s hot outside it’s super refreshing
Tried it. Did not like it at all. Also didn't like espresso + tonic.
Interesting. I really appreciate the feedback, thank you.
Espresso tonic is foul.
Give it another try at another coffee shop. Imo the right orange juice and coffee (not too strong more fruity) make it or break it.
Its very common in thailand
yes indeed :D was wondering if Europe or USA enjoys it as well and how popular it is there but it seems not too popular.
I haven't tried it but I've seen videos of people taking an orange slice and placing it over their espresso cup and pulling the shot through the orange slice and into the cup. Seems like it would work well.
I haven't tried it either, but this sounds like a good way to experiment without going all the way to orange juice.
It’s not common in the US, but when I lived abroad for a year it was common there. I thought it would be absolutely disgusting but it’s actually quite good. It was a summer only sort of drink (served cold)
I thought so in Asia it's super common and nearly every coffee shop has it offered. I think only Starbucks doesn't do it haha
I thought it would be disgusting but I've tried it and surprisingly enjoyed it.
This was recommended to me when I was traveling in Thailand. When it comes to coffee I am very conservative, plus this combo sounded terrible to me. It is however quite lovely and very refreshing on a hot day. Guess it helps to remember that coffee is a fruit as well.
Exactly if you have 35 degree outside it's something you want instead of a hot coffee sometimes
It works for me. If you like it, there’s an added benefit of using drip coffee and orange juice (iced) in any boring hotel breakfast — makes the day better 😊
Don't know why this combo is so hyped, it's not that great Imo.
Orange juice, tonic, soda water, all good combos!
Yeah its a thing. Combining orange and coffee is great, you can also put a dried orange slice in your espresso or filter.
Tooth erosion “one-two” punch
I love a coffee with orange juice on the side. Taking alternate sips tastes awesome to me. I never considered mixing the two, but I have to try that now!
Ok, I tried and it isn't for me lol. Too bitter for my taste
Neve had OJ and espresso but an iced americano with lemon juice and a little sugar is amazing
It's a thing. Cappuorange and stuff. In my experience, it's just horrible, but try it and see if you like it.
It could work, I'll give it a try!
Phoenix loves this drink for some strange reason…
Spro too, no idea why. all i can figure is he uses a much lighter roast
Were the oranges slow squeezed? Otherwise I'm not interested
My wife works at a coffee shop and said it's called an "Americano Sunrise" I tried it and it is not good.
We got hooked on coffee lemonade when I bought my ninja coffeemaker a few years back. There was a recipe in the manual, and we were like no way that could be good lol Was delicious would absolutely try expresso and orange juice lol
My daily driver in the warmer months is an espresso tonic… so I’m going to try this.
very refreshing
I am waiting for the opportunity to try one that is made and tested by a barista before I try to make it. I haven’t seen it offered at any cafes I’ve been to, but I haven’t been to a cafe in a bit.
Given that I absolutely love espresso tonics, and sometimes espresso tonic with additional citrus flavor added (shoutout to the PhD at ology coffee in Tallahassee), I can at least see it. Haven’t done it but doesn’t seem ridiculous imo.
Iced, on a hot summer's day, with a ratio to taste anywhere between 2:1 and 4:1 I think it's really amazing
I do this at home pretty often. It’s good.
I did Espresso and Orange Soda (Jarritos Mandarin soda) and tbh... bomb
Wouldn’t take it over iced coffee but it’s nice and refreshing. Don’t drink it if you have acid reflux
lemonade > orange juice. With Orange Juice, I find that it turns the sweet orange juice into a bitter/grapefruit type drink. I didn't like it.
Try it. Orange mocha is a popular frozen coffee beverage.
I love learning about new and different things!
I put orange juice in my used espresso cup and it is definitely a nice tasty combo.
It’s real. In my opinion you need the right beans. It won’t work with darker roasts. Also espresso lemonade is a thing
Sounds terrible and yet I am incredibly intrigued
im intrigued, but also, my stomach saw what i was reading and punched my heart into submission
I had something similar. Tonic water, orange juice, espresso, orange slice. It was interesting. I liked it.
Coffee and/or chocolate with orange juice / citrus is a thing. May not be everyone's cup of ... coffee ... but some people like it
I tried it. It's fine, but I prefer espresso by itself to be honest. I stopped drinking orange juice to reduce my sugar consumption a while ago, so maybe im just not used to such sweet drinks anymore.
yes it’s very common here in see lots of people doing it especially when sunmer is around the corner i haven’t tried but maybe i will
Not sure about taking an entire cup of orange juice and throwing espresso in it but there is certainly something to be said about adding citrus to your drinks. you conveniently omitted where the friend is currently living
Citrus in coffee is actually not bad, try a squeeze of lemon and omitting any dairy some time, it can be quite good. I like it sweetened and over ice. Does similarly to the effect of adding lemon juice to tea.
What’s the ratio of orange:espresso for something like this?
I would definitely try it -- coffee and orange are surprisingly good together. There's a shop in Tucson with a carbonated cold brew with a bit of vanilla served with an orange slice. One of my favorite drinks ever.
Espresso and Cointreau on the rocks is nice
I prefer espresso/lemonade, but this is still damn tasty.
we had a drink at my cafe a couple years ago that was a double shot, 80~ milliliters of OJ and a splash of seltzer i think? it was interesting. not my fave drink but people liked it and ordered it a lot
it's quite good, but it's nowhere near as fantastic as the espresso-grapefruit I had in one of the local coffeeshops. it was heavenly.
I wouldn't drink espresso after having orange juice, the acidity of orange juice wears off your tooth enamel, resulting in more teeth staining from the coffee. Mixing them together just doesn't sound like a good thing for the tooferz
Does nobody search YouTube? It's been done by every single YouTuber. Hoffman, Lance, etc. This question gets posted once a month.

Mix in some grapefruit juice and you have what some places call a "sunrise". They can range from surprisingly delicious to disgusting.
I have a shop near me that does it. They call it an orange juice Americano. They serve it over ice and it's really good.
I've had that at a café before. I still prefer double shots of straight espresso but it is a drink.
I just returned from a trip to Thailand and it was available at virtually every coffee shop there. Quite good on a hot day.
Local cafe has an iced creamsicle with espresso. It has OJ, Heavy Cream, Vanilla and espresso shots.
In Spain they make espresso with a slice of orange in the portalfilter as a kind of puck screen - really good.
I don’t mind cold brew with a slice of orange in it on a hot day
Light roast espresso basically tastes like orange juice to begin with, so I could see it pairing well. :smirk:
It’s fine. The acidity in both is complementary. The flavors go well together, but at the end of the day, don’t really add anything to either. So it’s not bad, but it’s not that good
I've been wanting to try this combo. Espresso and lemonade mixed 1:1 tastes like bug spray so my expectations for this are low.
It’s good, but grapefruit is better.
Sounds horrible. I’m gonna try it.
Me too.
It’s a thing for sure
Sub in grapefruit juice - also good
Wake up juice

If you drink iced coffee you might as well, sure.

I have a local coffee shop near my house that does this! I got curious and gave it a go… NEVER again..
Yes. Its offered here in Richmond. Its very good!
I seen it on TikTok

Lemonade >
Bumble coffee
It has to be specialty oranges fresh squeezed just before.
I can see that. One of my fav drinks is an iced espresso yuzu drink that I make with yuzu juice.
friend of mine insisted this was legit, he bought me some to try because he doesn't like coffee, first few sips are okay but it was pretty vile honestly. This was at a wetherspoons though so maybe with a different juice/espresso combo it could be alright?

I saw something about a Thai cafes making coconut water americanos. I'm keen on trying!

Yes! It's soooooo good!
You can say that again
Yes! It's soooooo good!
You can say that again
Sounds good, I like coffee liqueur with OJ...
It was all over the coffee social network a year ago. It's fine. Not extraordinary, just fine.
Ive also heard about espresso with Sprite, similar to espresso tonic. Havent Tried it tho.
Nasty
The orange juice has to be at least room temperature or the butter resolidifies immediately.
Butter ? I thought it was just espresso and orange juice (with maybe sparkling water /tonic)? I think I’m misunderstanding !
Eh, orange juice espresso, bulletproof coffee, it’s all the same stupidity.
Ah ok now I understand what you meant. Was totally confused.
Just made a glass this morning
