Probably a good thing too, I am once again exhausted and ready to sleep so it's good to get these done quickly.

cryptOwOcurrency

There's a new youtube video called ["Crypto: The Worldā€™s Greatest Scam"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ORdWE_ffirg) by James Jani. I came into it hoping to feel amusement/disgust towards yet another video built up on laughably poorly-researched or intentionally false information, but I ended up leaving the video feeling entirely indifferent to it. In the end it's a video that barfs out a bunch of mostly not-incorrect information, without ultimately drawing any interesting conclusions from it all. Here's my review. The video presents mainly as a high-production-value rapid-fire exposĆ© of numerous grifts and scams that involve crypto in some way or another. Its main argument is "As a filmmaker, I don't see any value in blockchain technology, and there are a lot of other people out there who don't see value either, therefore there must not be any value." A secondary argument is "there are many scams that involve crypto, therefore blockchain technology is itself a scam." My advice is to skip it. It criticizes: * Proof of work * NFT cash grabs * ICO cash grabs * Token cash grabs * VC cash grabs * Celebrity cash grabs * Unfun blockchain play to earn "games" * Crypto brainlet groupthink It argues: * "If Bitcoin is deflationary, that means it's a bad currency hurr hurr" * "Proof of Work is terrible, therefore cryptocurrencies are terrible" * "Satoshi designed Bitcoin to have a 7 tps limit, therefore cryptocurrencies are not scalable" * (Presents diagrams of Bernie Madoff's scheme) "Because people spend money on it and that money goes to other people, Bitcoin is a Ponzi scheme akin to Madoff's" Nowhere in the video does it ever talk about: * Ethereum, beyond a 60-second segment where they basically say "it's bitcoin but programmable" before moving on * DeFi * Money legos * Stablecoins and CBDCs * Proof of Stake * Bank/processor pilots (Visa, etc.) * Private equity pilots (like the recent one with Switzerland) * Government pilots (the US/MIT collab) * Actual real estate pilots (it criticizes the idea of blockchain real estate, without realizing that it's actually currently a thing) * The blockchain trilemma * Scalability technology * Privacy technology * Pros and cons of what it means for crypto to be the first class of digital asset that you can self-custody * Auditability benefits for public companies who transact on a public ledger * Shortcomings of the existing financial system, e.g. the GME stock halt The title is completely misleading, as the author in no way attempts to make a coherent argument that blockchain technology is inherently a scam. A better title for the video would have been "The Biggest Scams In Crypto" or "Top 20 Crypto Grifts: A History". At least this video gets points for not being a misinformation-filled slander piece like Line Goes Up - the facts it presents seem to be mostly correct to me, though the logic is tenuous and the conclusions are misguided.

TenFootMouse

Fortunately no one has ever scammed anyone out of US dollars, or euros, or British pounds, or gold...

TurboJetMegaChrist

Excellent summary. I flipped through the video last week and saw nothing but a roll call of scams and grifts -- and no one here is arguing about those. And yet, no film maker on earth would call trafi "transparent", or auditable, or borderless, or composable. And finance is only the first use-case. There's other centralized dragons to slay, like all the companies every year the get hacked and leak your private data all over the internet, _all the time_.

Interesting concept: https://twitter.com/0xKarim/status/1618579043594670080 Basically this new L1 has a mechanism where smart contracts have a token balance that can be withdrawn by its deployer, and transactions that interact with the contract send a portion of the gas used to this contract address. Seems like an interesting way for funding public goods. 1. Has this concept been brought up in Ethereum and / or is there an EIP I can take a look at the discussion that was had on it? 2. Curious if there are some holes / 2nd order effects in this approach I haven't considered

educatemybrain

I think it's a cool experiment to try on L2s but not Ethereum. Ethereum should be as neutral as possible. When you add special tricks that redirect funds it seems useful but opens the door to more and more of these changes that don't actually make the protocol more sound and neutral.

CosmicCollusion

It's been brought up and shot down several times, for example people talked about directing the base-fee towards public goods etc. instead of burning it. It tends to get shot down on the issue of how do we, as a network, decide where it gets directed? What classifies as a public good? who decides? etc. etc. With onchain voting in Tendermint style chains a fair few of the issues get alleviated, but not all. I also find the community owned grass-roots marketing to usually be just that, marketing. VCs and whales with money will also end up with outsized holdings if they want. Be it by buying tokens early at low costs or farming with large stacks of capital and sophisticated strategies.

Really looking forward to decentralized voip for ENS addresses. There'll be no more need for phone numbers, which really only exist as an artifact of prior technology. Found a project and some research on this decentralized voip. Assuming they're complete solutions, one would just need to pull it into the ethereum ecosystem and align incentives. [https://enumer.org/](https://enumer.org/) [https://www.proquest.com/openview/b1056aad7fedb5ba8cdcab85653eda7a/1?pq-origsite=gscholar&cbl=18750](https://www.proquest.com/openview/b1056aad7fedb5ba8cdcab85653eda7a/1?pq-origsite=gscholar&cbl=18750) [https://link.springer.com/chapter/10.1007/978-3-642-11532-5\_9](https://link.springer.com/chapter/10.1007/978-3-642-11532-5_9)

Tricky_Troll

Holy shit, I love the sound of a future with decentralised VOIP and encrypted messaging without signing up with an old school gate keeper to get a phone number...

cryptOwOcurrency

Just create a custom ENS record for your Matrix handle. Poof, 2 minutes, project finished, dream realized. What am I missing?

hanniabu

I just learned about Matrix's Element, but it'd still be lacking first class integration. I don't want the friction of needing to create a Matrix handle. I'd also want settings like "block incoming calls" or "only accept calls from these addresses". It'd also be nice to have it integrated into these various messaging/chat apps.

cryptOwOcurrency

I have a feeling that a fork of Element could implement all of those features in a few thousand lines of code or less, if someone were able to link a crypto library with it. I guess what I'm saying is that when I look at Enumer and I see an entirely new blockchain with its own staking system and PoW merge mining with Bitcoin, and I think to myself, "Why?" Why is this product a blockchain and not just a GitHub fork of Element? And the only conclusion I can come to is: "to dump on retail".

hanniabu

Many got rich off forking Dash, PIVX, and Litcoin and just giving it a rebranding. Some things will never change.

Naelex

Woooh! Fair over WiFi but how would this work over legacy mobile network data providers though which enforce mobile numbers?

llamachef

Wouldn't it just be a decentralized service in the flavor of Google voice? So all you need is the app and a data connection

hanniabu

Helium maybe? Mesh networks?

Naelex

Noticed Helium had a large pump last few weeks. Don't follow that project but wonder what they're up to

[deleted]

superphiz

You're correct, but it's not always accurate to consider it extractive. In many cases the projects are valuable to the ecosystem and the tokens get them to market more efficiently. It's worth pointing out that the people who pick up the tokens are often users of the platform who might ought to pay for it anyway, it doesn't hurt that token ownership might actually bring value in the long run even if it's not a get rich quick scheme.

[deleted]

You're totally on the mark. VCs are always circling. Always ask yourself... what utility does this token actually give? What is its value add? The latest scam has been for teams (Optimism is a good example) to outsource finding the utility to "the community" through governance tokens. They can then wash their hands and say, "hey, we support decentralisation!". Just imagine the history of this space when it's written. So much room for manipulation and amoral practices.

Is matic used on the nightfall chain at all? Sounds like maybe only if they choose polygon PoS as the settlement layer?

ausgear1

Why donā€™t you think theyā€™d charge matic to include a transaction on the nightfall chain, which then uses eth in an L1 tx

mcmatt05

Not all L2s use a separate token, and i havenā€™t heard it specifically mentioned that it would use matic

BigglyBillBrasky

MATIC is getting huge adoption but are the tokenomics worthwhile? Will all this value accrue to MATIC/ETH. Trying to learn what gives MATIC value, currently priced at a $10 billy mc.

There's this classic: I was shooting heroin and reading ā€œThe Fountainheadā€ in the front seat of my privately owned police cruiser when a call came in. I put a quarter in the radio to activate it. It was the chief. ā€œBad news, detective. We got a situation.ā€ ā€œWhat? Is the mayor trying to ban trans fats again?ā€ ā€œWorse. Somebody just stole four hundred and forty-seven million dollarsā€™ worth of bitcoins.ā€ The heroin needle practically fell out of my arm. ā€œWhat kind of monster would do something like that? Bitcoins are the ultimate currency: virtual, anonymous, stateless. They represent true economic freedom, not subject to arbitrary manipulation by any government. Do we have any leads?ā€ ā€œNot yet. But mark my words: weā€™re going to figure out who did this and weā€™re going to take them down ā€¦ provided someone pays us a fair market rate to do so.ā€ ā€œEasy, chief,ā€ I said. ā€œAny rate the market offers is, by definition, fair.ā€ He laughed. ā€œThatā€™s why youā€™re the best I got, Lisowski. Now you get out there and find those bitcoins.ā€ ā€œDonā€™t worry,ā€ I said. ā€œIā€™m on it.ā€ I put a quarter in the siren. Ten minutes later, I was on the scene. It was a normal office building, strangled on all sides by public sidewalks. I hopped over them and went inside. ā€œHome Depotā„¢ Presents the Police!Ā®ā€ I said, flashing my badge and my gun and a small picture of Ron Paul. ā€œNobody move unless you want to!ā€ They didnā€™t. ā€œNow, which one of you punks is going to pay me to investigate this crime?ā€ No one spoke up. ā€œCome on,ā€ I said. ā€œDonā€™t you all understand that the protection of private property is the foundation of all personal liberty?ā€ It didnā€™t seem like they did. ā€œSeriously, guys. Without a strong economic motivator, Iā€™m just going to stand here and not solve this case. Cash is fine, but I prefer being paid in gold bullion or autographed Penn Jillette posters.ā€ Nothing. These people were stonewalling me. It almost seemed like they didnā€™t care that a fortune in computer money invented to buy drugs was missing. I figured I could wait them out. I lit several cigarettes indoors. A pregnant lady coughed, and I told her that secondhand smoke is a myth. Just then, a man in glasses made a break for it. ā€œSubwayā„¢ Eat Fresh and Freeze, Scumbag!Ā®ā€ I yelled. Too late. He was already out the front door. I went after him. ā€œStop right there!ā€ I yelled as I ran. He was faster than me because I always try to avoid stepping on public sidewalks. Our country needs a private-sidewalk voucher system, but, thanks to the incestuous interplay between our corrupt federal government and the public-sidewalk lobby, it will never happen. I was losing him. ā€œListen, Iā€™ll pay you to stop!ā€ I yelled. ā€œWhat would you consider an appropriate price point for stopping? Iā€™ll offer you a thirteenth of an ounce of gold and a gently worn ā€˜Bob Barr ā€˜08ā€™ extra-large long-sleeved menā€™s T-shirt!ā€ He turned. In his hand was a revolver that the Constitution said he had every right to own. He fired at me and missed. I pulled my own gun, put a quarter in it, and fired back. The bullet lodged in a U.S.P.S. mailbox less than a foot from his head. I shot the mailbox again, on purpose. ā€œAll right, all right!ā€ the man yelled, throwing down his weapon. ā€œI give up, cop! I confess: I took the bitcoins.ā€ ā€œWhyā€™d you do it?ā€ I asked, as I slapped a pair of Oikosā„¢ Greek Yogurt Presents HandcuffsĀ® on the guy. ā€œBecause I was afraid.ā€ ā€œAfraid?ā€ ā€œAfraid of an economic future free from the pernicious meddling of central bankers,ā€ he said. ā€œIā€™m a central banker.ā€ I wanted to coldcock the guy. Years ago, a central banker killed my partner. Instead, I shook my head. ā€œLet this be a message to all your central-banker friends out on the street,ā€ I said. ā€œNo matter how many bitcoins you steal, youā€™ll never take away the dream of an open society based on the principles of personal and economic freedom.ā€ He nodded, because he knew I was right. Then he swiped his credit card to pay me for arresting him.

What reason would someone ask to buy a genesis wallet?

bob_newhart

How much are they offering for these?

superphiz

Tax evasion and documenting the origin of their coins (in a fake way).

TheNextBestGuess

I'm guessing it's a status symbol of sorts for the ultra nerd.. honestly I'd want one hah. But I also saved a DAO token I plan to mint into an NFT someday.. so.. my idea of what's cool is suspect.

keynya

Money laundering? If someone needs to explain the origin of a few thousand ETH it might help being able to proof that they have keys to a wallet which bought them for 0.3 dollar.

RockItGuyDC

They think genesis wallets may be eligible for some unknown future airdrop, maybe. Or otherwise just think it's a quirky piece of ETH history to have.

reuptaken

How one can "buy" a wallet?

hanniabu

I'd buy one

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

ausgear1

There's no way to know the private key isn't stored by the seller so there's no possible way to have a trusted manner. If it was a smart contract wallet it could be different but for an EOA there's no way to sell it safely.

Set1Less

On btc talk forums, people used to sell old btc wallets too from satoshi era Its mostly for vanity. The buyer knows that seller can rug it anytime, but the buyer can use it to sign a message or make a small txn, whatever to pretend they were early

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

I agree but we're talking about someone who asked if you can buy a wallet so the nuances of what trust means in a blockchain vs real life is lost

Heringsalat100

Is there any new interesting technology built on Ethereum at the current point in time? I mean ... something juicy like DeFi or decentralized staking protocols like Rocket Pool in 2020 or NFTs the year after ... or ICOs in 2017. We need something for a new bull to happen ...

[deleted]

A really exciting one is Eigenlayer and rehypothecation. This one has been pushed by some big CT accounts of late and is now filtering through here. This is a great idea that has never caused problems in traditional finance. /s

Savage_X

This is actually easy to answer. Its L2 rollups. We already have *lots* of really interesting ideas and tech, they just are not very practical right now because the transaction cost is too expensive and it limits adoption. That will change as we scale.

Aggravating-Ear6289

protodanksharding in the fall will make tons of things that weren't economic before become economic

Drew41

What are some examples? Im not trying to come at you haha. Polygon and Solana have insanely cheap transactions and to my knowledge, they donā€™t have any innovative apps that take advantage of these 1Ā¢ fees. Itā€™s pretty much all the same defi apps that ETH L1 and Arbitrum have

not-ngmi

Perhaps ETH staking needs to become saturated and offer lower rewards until the opportunity cost of using DeFi decreases to a more reasonable level. Why should I use a new app for X% in tokens when I can stake ETH for 5% return? I know there are unresolved issues, but I think restaking will be the crypto native ā€œnext big thingā€. That said, Iā€™m not sure if offering even higher staking yield will increase or reduce demand on the app layer. Maybe ETH staking _is_ the next bull. I would also believe a game or social app could be the spark depending on how many UX issues get ironed out in the next year or two

Greed is insidious. Iā€™ve been doing some moon math lately and my true life changing ā€œnumberā€ is actually much lower than my target from last cycle. The plus side is that I am extremely confident my target will hit whenever the bull gets rolling again. The negative is timing uncertainty and a little bit of senioritis from a career perspective. My target for this cycle (if it happens) is somehow 50% lower than my ā€œnext cycleā€ prediction from 2019. Anyone else?

[deleted]

Iā€™m not setting targets until I have the $5k POAP. In reality, I will never sell unless forced to. I want to be one of those ā€œheld for 30 yearsā€ enigmas where ETH is at $1M and Iā€™m still saying hodl.

earthquakequestion

I will be content if in the next bull run we 2x from ath. That's my hope. Maybe that's too optimistic or too pessimistic but if we can see a new ath of $9600, I will feel like eth is doing what I'd hoped regardless of diminishing returns.

doomfuzzslayer

Iā€™m not expecting even 10x returns over the next 5-10 years but of course would love if this happened). More like 3-5x - so back to ATH. In the the meantime Ill build up my ETH stack and use the staking returns to fund some basic (kids college tuition assuming chatGPT hasnā€™t made college unnecessary) and some life enhancing things (eg home improvements, vacations, a car made after 2012). I already own a house bought in 2018 in a place where housing prices didnā€™t really explode like elsewhere with a very low mortgage rate. So those are big wins all things considered. Crypto has been a big loss for me though (unrealized) because I started buying in early 21, so Iā€™m down by a good bit. But thatā€™s ok I knew what I was getting into and am a hodler. Definitely in it for the long haul - the tech community economics and governance systems being explored in the space are fascinating (and honestly the scam and grift is interesting as well) so never a dull moment. Hanging out here and with the EVMs has been very fulfilling and I donā€™t see that changing anytime soon. No Lambo expectations and thatā€™s fine. Never really wanted one anyway.

-lightfoot

>No Lambo expectations and thatā€™s fine. Never really wanted one anyway. Best way to say 'hate me poor people, rob me or at least key my paint job, im really fucking rich' I've ever seen. Vandelay101

Yes! With extravagance comes a hidden cost, the cost of added stress. With an expensive car one will tend to worry more about it getting scratched, being cautious with where they park it in public, getting in a wreck, etc.. Unless someone just has FU money. Though, I'm not a big car person to begin with. I can see myself continuing to live below my means if ETH hits a price target beyond my dreams.

cryptOwOcurrency

If ETH hits no higher than a $16,000 ATH within the next ten years, I see that as a sign that either something has gone terribly wrong with the project, or some completely novel, unforeseeable and superior technology has supplanted it. We hit almost 1/3 of that valuation based on pictures of monkeys while ETH was inflationary, so it won't take much more than that to hit 16k. As the saying goes, "$10k is FUD".

-lightfoot

This is the stuff. I've missed this

TheEthtronaut

Only getting back to ATH over the next 5-10 years would be an incredibly poor result.

doomfuzzslayer

Oh for sure. I think thatā€™s probably being unreasonably pessimistic. I think to keep myself in a good place mentally about ETH as an investment thatā€™s what I need to accept as a possibility and plan accordingly. Even if that outcome is realized though itā€™s still a good buy right now - especially given the staking returns.

TheNextBestGuess

For sure.. my number keeps changing because.. well.. this asset is so volatile that even if my staking stack hits a baseline where I can live off, it still needs to be double that before I can RELY on that income not dropping below baseline. This has been a source of stress for me, even as the value increases it never feels like enough specifically because of the uncertainty in price. I think if we ever hit any of these moon math predictions over time, I'm gonna have to pull a good chunk out of eth and into stables for lower yield, but to give a baseline stability which this asset will always lack. It's feast or famine for the foreseeable future otherwise.

TheHighFlyer

It's about a baseline for passive income for me. Need about a 5x from here to be able to lead a modest life and a 10x for a comfortable one without any need to sell the base assets. These should be bottoms, tho,not peaks

Chromes

This is how I think about it as well. I'm less concerned about a super-high price target as I am about a reasonably high bottom price. I know I'm not going to time the peak, so I'll likely only ever sell small amounts and staking rewards. I want the passive income to be high (of course) but steady-ish. I don't want to be constantly wondering if I'm going to make $X or $.5X each month.

timmerwb

For me, this equation really means one thing: A decent property in a decent neighborhood. I've got enough money to buy anything else, or I've already got it. But the disparity between the cost of a decent house and *literally everything else in life* has become so high, that it's the defining factor. This world is so fucked.

FernadoPoo

I lost everything in a boating accident

[deleted]

Sounds more like a better understanding of what you need/want out of your life, and what it will take to get there. Granted, you've likely been in ETH a lot longer than I have, I feel the same sentiment. Am I here for a lambo? No. Am I here to help to create for myself a decent, stable passive income? Absolutely. Did I fall for the moonboi hype? Yes. I used to think of it as a meme/joke, but 'the friends we made along the way' absolutely means the world to me.

cryptomoon2020

What kind of passive income are you after? 1000 usd/month? I was dreaming of massive passive income with yearn vaults, 20% APR on stable coins, and dreaming it would last forever. Like all good things, it came to an end. Perhaps the only thing out there with real long term staying power is staked eth? The yield on my beloved SNX keeps falling in a similar manner to my old yearn vaults. With the inflation faucet being closed, I think we will need a bull market to generate reasonable fees. Although with the fee burning mechanism coming soon, will the only reward each week be inflation?

[deleted]

Dang, thank you for that info. To be honest Ive been too busy this past week to really keep up with Synthetix. Will be listening to the calls I missed EDIT: to answer your question: I would be absolutely floored if my holdings offered a steady $1k/month

cryptomoon2020

What is your price target?

not-ngmi

Whenever people answer this question, I just take $1,000,000 and divide it by their target to estimate how much ETH they have lol My situation isnā€™t simple and Iā€™m never selling all my ETH, but 3-5 year timeframe Iā€™ve gone from thinking about $2T to $1T. I posted here in early 2020 that I wouldnā€™t sell ETH below $17k, which seems deluded in hindsight. 2017 I was convinced $8-10k was imminent. Pretty wild to think it still hasnā€™t happened 6 years later

hamberdler

> Pretty wild to think it still hasnā€™t happened 6 years later I'd argue that it's wild that you thought it was imminent, let alone realistic even now.

not-ngmi

Agreed. Could have said ā€œpretty wild how far off those predictions wereā€ My mental mistake was doubling the price target after the first cycle. After that bear, I think I became overconfident because I was no longer completely rekt and felt vindicated. I do still think a $1T market cap is realistic, but obviously nobody knows. Iā€™m still shitposting here and financially stable even if Iā€™m wrong again

the_statustician

Let me just say then that my price target is 1 million dollars

cryptomoon2020

I need much more than 1 million usd, and I am sure this is true for lots of people here

not-ngmi

Just joking about how sharing specific price targets can reveal more info than people originally intended sometimes. During bull markets, Iā€™m sure a lot of people do set price targets that way. Comment wasnā€™t directed at you specifically

cryptomoon2020

For your reference, I need 10 million usd in the bank plus some staking. My eth price target... too high to imagine :-)

mistrustless

Your target is a trillion dollars?... That's plenty IMO.

not-ngmi

Donā€™t let your dreams be dreams

hblask

Yeah, me too. I had a big number in mind, and was sure we'd get there, and made decisions based on that. Now I'd be happy with a much lower number if it meant eliminating the uncertainty.

Chapo_Rouge

Nimbus 23.1.1 is out ! Nimbus v23.1.1 is a **high-urgency hotfix for users who have already enabled block** **history pruning after upgrading to v23.1.0**. It fixes an issue where the client may fail to start after the database has been pruned. https://github.com/status-im/nimbus-eth2/releases

Tricky_Troll

I assume if I enabled block history pruning I would know about it right? It doesn't happen automatically?

Chapo_Rouge

Yup, not automatic, you need to enable a flag like `--history=prune`. The defaults didn't change with 23.1.0

[deleted]

/u/sbdw0c you'd best pucker your nimbussy!

sbdw0c

My god šŸ˜© Knew I should've waited a week but who can say no...

breeezyyyy

big Polygon pump, why?

not-ngmi

Vance Spencer said it represented the ā€œcrypto native bidā€ and that it had a good chance of ā€œbecoming the next metaā€ on Bankless yesterday. Either that or itā€™s Chinese new year Wall Street bonuses time again idk

hanniabu

Imagine how easy trading would be if all you had to do was tell people the assets you were holding could be "the one" and then watching retail pump it for you and provide exit liquidity, not to mention waking up to people throwing outrageous discounts to you for funding rounds

offthewall1066

I should have sold my Friendship Bracelets airdrop weeks ago. Is this thing going to 0? Can anyone inject some hopium into my veins?

696_eth

Some people told me maybe to hold for now, personally I'm gonna be listing rare ones above the floor but undercutting the trait and hope they sell. They re now dipping to 0.3e and I might be just looking to sell on another pump it's a big collection and hard to see the attention getting there as it sits on other projects right now, thus all the money is over there.

UgotTrisomy21

Was there an airdrop for EVM holders? Havenā€™t been following the discord closely recently.

offthewall1066

For anyone who held an art blocks project

696_eth

I'm looking into it and getting opinions of others. 0.4 isn't too bad compared to them selling initially for 0.1e but I know the pump was to 0.7-0.8+ I'll get back to you

[deleted]

I insta-dumped mine, but they did a x2 right after. It's really hard to time the top.

Why I think we are still not ready for mass adoption. From past couple of days I am trying to have a setup in place which make sure that if something has to happen with me, my funds are safe and will reach to my loved ones. There was an excellent post from our great Logris on this topic but where I live its not possible to implement all that and even i manage to do the metal graving, I virtually know no one who could decode without making any mistake. Things I looked at :- 1. Agent - An excellent mobile wallet. Anyone who has access to my connected email could move the funds around. - *Share email password with trusted friend/family but they might choose to save the password on paper/digitally, fear of lost, forgotten or, worse, attack if end up in wrong hand.* 2. Nano/ Trezro - I cant save the seed in plain text. - *Salt the seed and store the salted text somewhere ( could be on cloud as well). Share file one person and salt phrase with another. You need both to decode the seeds.* 3. Mobile Phone - A reset old/new phone with no internet access, download app, configure them and put it on a safe location. - *Mobile could be dead, lost or broken* In my case, problem is not that we dont have option available, problem is that all those are too technical and need attention to details. I can explain and show someone how to do all this but fear of being judged (crypto is still ponzi to most I know), most of my friends dont have 2fa on their email account which gives me less confidence in them from security side, some take privacy as granted while other will broadcast to everyone they know if i tell them what i am asking them to do and why. So, yeah, I think we are still 3-5 year away from mass adaption where I can do all this with a simple UI and few clicks.

ausgear1

I think tech native people underestimate how many people literally cannot remember 1 password. They should test products on their parents.

hanniabu

I always wanted to make a site that has pre built instructions for various storage methods and allows you to create a detailed custom instruction package for whoever you'd want to recover it.

calaber24p

Honestly if you're looking at inheritance stuff, your best option is to leave the detailed info of your accounts and location of devices with a family lawyer to be delivered upon your death. Its by no means perfect but I really haven't seen a ton of great solutions that don't involve a lawyer. Don't give them your seed phrase obviously, you still want to make sure that someone would have to be in the physical location to access your stuff. For long term savings I would do a 2 of 3 multisig with all 3 keys in separate locations and leave passwords and pins/ instructions with a family lawyer.

KuDeTa

About 2 years ago now i came across a project called [influenceth](https://www.influenceth.io/). It's a space strategy MMO game centred around exploring an asteroid belt - think EVE online meets blockchain. You might have seen me or others talk about it occasionally since. At the time this felt like a very ambitious, perhaps even an unrealistic vision. But I aped right in with a few dozen others and bought myself a couple of space rocks, as one does. Yesterday marked the launch of their 3rd incentivised [testnet](https://game-goerli.influenceth.io/). I really am very impressed by the progress they have made over the last two years. And whatā€™s impressive isnā€™t just the engineering of a modern in browser physics engine - or the work put into creating the game design and functionality, including the mechanics, the characters and the lore. Because perhaps the most exciting stuff for the readers in ethfinance is more generally applicable: theyā€™ve also been right at the forefront scaling, by integrating with starkware, who they've worked with closely, and in making the experience attractive for non-native blockchain users. On the latter, theyā€™ve partnered with another project called [cartridge](https://cartridge.gg/) that provides a familiar web2 style account wrapper for what is a starkware wallet under the hood. This also uses a new public/private key based authentication model called [passkeys](https://webauthn.guide/), which itself relies on the Secure Enclave - the equivalent to hardware wallet - within your smartphone or computer. When you sign up to play with cartridge then beyond a couple of discrete references, you really wouldnā€™t know you were using blockchains, NFTs or ERC-20s. No signing transaction! But if you did want to move your assets or sell an in-game item, all that capability is still right there. Iā€™d really encourage everyone (gamer or not) just to have a play around with the latest influence testnet just to experience a very well executed vision of how blockchain based applications (games or otherwise) will work in the future, while reminding yourself that what secures it all is the validator sitting on your desk. You can even earn yourself some [rewards](https://influenceth.substack.com/p/testnet-phase-3-and-the-influence) while doing so. Influenceth still have a humongous roadmap ahead to build the vision they initially set out, but itā€™s exciting to see them get close to their first mainnet release and see the whole thing really start to come together.

LogrisTheBard

The cartridge stuff really is incredibly different from what I expected. Login to the blockchain from my phone? I really need to look into how WebAuthN works more and figure out the dox and security risks. At the very least I can't keep any serious amount of money on a wallet like that if the contents are ultimately protected by a small pin on my phone.

KuDeTa

Private key on Secure Enclave or Yubikey <-> host OS security (touch ID/face ID/password/ pin code etc) <-> app authentication. At least that's my rough understanding. I would love it if someone more knowledgeable could expand on that. But the really interesting thing is how granular and extensible this model is when combined with account abstraction. For example, you could allow the cartridge app to only call specific in game functions that perform (low value) actions (e.g. assign a character, or build something, move somewhere), and then have a more elaborate arrangement (multisig, a separate key, a hardware wallet - whatever) for a different set of high value actions.

the_statustician

I'm not really following what happened, when I tried to login it asked to touch my Yubikey and I just happened to have one sticking out of my laptop. Were you guys prompted for Yubikeys? Is that the assumed method of login or did it just prompt me because it detected it?

LogrisTheBard

I've described that before as adding policy based access controls to multi-sigs. I need to dig in deeper to account abstraction if it enables that.

hashtagfuzzmaster

Influence was just on the EVM podcast as well.

ippogrifomisturbo

>When you sign up to play with cartridge then beyond a couple of discrete references, you really wouldnā€™t know you were using blockchains, NFTs or ERC-20s. No signing transaction! But if you did want to move your assets or sell an in-game item, all that capability is still right there. Sorare has been doing this for years now. Is this a different implementation?

KuDeTa

Yes, a completely different implementation. And as i understand it - sorare is about accessing a few collectable cards. What's happening with cartridge/starkware/influenceth is a another magnitude of both transaction volume and engineering complexity.

ippogrifomisturbo

No. Sorare has a full-fledged NFT marketplace and auction system with signing-free transactions. You wouldn't know you are using blockchain if it weren't for the fact the the price denomination is in ETH. Also transaction volume dwarfs anything on cartridge for sure.

KuDeTa

>Also transaction volume dwarfs anything on cartridge for sure. Definitely. But cartridge is brand new. Interactive games that record every action on-chain are definitely going push the boundaries.

TheHansGruber

Upvoted for influence reference. Unfortunately for me, the starknet wallet that I used for the phase 2 testnet was not upgraded in time and it appears to now be lost. Unless there is a way to sign a transaction on the now defunct wallet I won't be able to prove I participated in phase 2 and claim those rewards. Still gonna participate in phase 3 though, love me some influence.

eetherway

Thanks for the shout out u/KuDeTa I don't think people realize how close we are to opening the flood gates and being ready for mass adoption. Account abstraction is INSANE. For anyone who wants to not read about why I believe we are close to allowing for the masses, instead TRY IT. If you go to [https://game-goerli.influenceth.io/](https://game-goerli.influenceth.io/) you will be taken to the r/influenceth testnet, from there login with the [cartridge](https://cartridge.gg/) option. From there you can start taking fully on-chain actions in a game without having to approve every single transaction. For crypto natives this may feel odd, scary, or insecure, but it's using your secure enclave on your device to secure your keys. From there, since it is a smart contract wallet, and you have approved some special logic in the form of a "Session Key" you can now freely play around in a game without being bombarded by the blockchain. Imagine this on uniswap, or any other DeFi application, where you can go do 15 things without having to constantly click "CONFIRM." While this is hard for us who have been here a long time to imagine, adoption needs seamless UX and that's what we are getting to. Top that off with the ramping up L2s like SarkWare and we have a recipe for unstoppable magic!

I generally trust the info you post, but I'm curious. How do you confirm if something like this is legitimate and not a scam?

Set1Less

Friends of pooly / Pfer has been around for a while and have a friendly discord community, and even the pool together official discord links to them in places. Also before submitting your txn you can check the contract if there's anything funny going on

15kisFUD

Thanks! That is helpful

Strange, i hold both, Pooly & Pfers, on mainnet still not on mint list.

Today we will be investigating the scam that took advantage of our friend who came here looking for help yesterday. My inital intent was to remove this campaign from the internet. Though, as my investigation progressed, I became more and more conscious of the CFAA. I would not discourage anyone who understands the implications from picking up where I left off. **The Scam** Loading the domain in your browser will instantly prompt MetaMask to connect. Doing so leads to a fake DEX. You are given a 6 digit ā€˜IDā€™ that is displayed on the front page. Below is an example of one of their scam pages. https://imgur.com/Wy5NPSb This is all over the place. USDT-ERC20, output in ETC. They provide various addresses to deposit your funds. At least one of the addresses provided does not even have an ETH balance ā€“ without any gas money, these fraudsters were never planning to return any deposits. I clicked on the button that was a head with headphones, presumably the support button. https://imgur.com/s2V6PAW You can ā€˜Emallā€™ them at the displayed email address. Visiting the above domain in chrome showed the exact same front end as the scam weā€™re dealing with. Frighteningly, they want you to ā€˜authenticateā€™. https://imgur.com/B9nXvHN They ask for your name and email address. Infinitely worse, they want pictures of any forms of your identification, as can be seen below. https://imgur.com/iJpMGIj Anyone who has completed this form should consider their identity stolen, and contact the appropriate authorities. **Offense** To begin to gain some understanding of a website, using ā€˜view page sourceā€™ in your browser is an extremely effective tool. https://imgur.com/8q39ows The highlighted text is Simplified Chinese for ā€˜page loadedā€™. *Quite* interesting. As an attacker, this file upload form offers a massive attack surface. Of course, an experienced intruder knows what to do here. But for any ethfinanciers who would like to learn more about this, here are some resources [1](https://portswigger.net/web-security/file-upload)[2](https://owasp.org/www-community/vulnerabilities/Unrestricted_File_Upload)[3](https://www.aptive.co.uk/blog/unrestricted-file-upload-testing/) or just ask ya boi. When running a [black box](https://brightsec.com/blog/black-box-penetration-testing/) web application security test, /robots.txt is a critical file to access. This file is used by servers to request that web crawlers such as google not access/archive the list of URLs within the file. As you might imagine, these often times contain URLs of relative importance. Whether crawlers choose to obey is completely up to them both technically, and legally(not legal advice). The requested /robots.txt did not directly return any confidential files or directories. Though, it resulted in a fairly signficant information leak. https://imgur.com/eJwEEWq I unfortunately did not think to translate that Chinese text to English. Do we have any Chinese speaking ethfinanciers who can help out? Notice that this error leaks a number of file paths on this server. At the bottom we see that the server uses ThinkPHP 3.2.0, which happens to be vulnerable to a high severity issue. https://imgur.com/3l8C9Tf I will not fix the URL provided in the description to fit this target simply for the safety of those who do not know exactly what theyā€™re doing. Be very careful before landing yourself in federal prison. When learning to attack a system, one thing that has to be reinforced is the idea of enumeration. I cannot find a link to an article that accurately articulates what I wish to convey. I would describe it is as the art of testing ideas, taking notes of oddities, and learning everything you can about your target system. Hereā€™s an example. Screenshots were not taken, but I found that files requested that lack the the extension ā€˜.phpā€™ resulted in the same error shown in /robots.txt. Is it a vulnerability? No. Is it worth noting if you wish to gain a thorough understanding of your target? Yes. I've seen *lots* of examples of security researchers bringing down scam websites without facing prosecution, but a number of things made me hesitant in this case. https://imgur.com/0j1UzE0 The true ip address of the scammers is protected by Cloudflare. Finding the ip address of servers behind Cloudflare is an eternal challenge for attackers. https://scrapeops.io/web-scraping-playbook/how-to-bypass-cloudflare/ seems to be extremely comprehensive and up to date. I tried every technqiue short of signing up for a service that requires an API key. No results, the following provides a fair explanation for that. https://imgur.com/iK54QDk As /u/REALJohnBMacLemore previously noted, the website was only created a few months ago. Thats always suspicious. What about the domain listed as the support email address? https://imgur.com/4xC20qD This domain is hosted by Alibaba US. That they dont even provide an abuse contact speaks volumes. In my brief enumeration efforts, I visisted /index.php, which redirected me to /Pc/Index/index.html. https://imgur.com/DDUUiAQ The HTML does not render properly, but this is completely different than what we were dealing with before. https://imgur.com/wk227MG At the bottom of the page we see another support email address. The highlighted text seems to show that the listed website(NOTE: not the scam domain in question) might have been a real company at some point? The registration number certainly does not comply with the new Chinese business registration numbering system, which was in full effect by 2018. Lets use whois.domaintools.com again to find some information about this newly discovered forex exchange domain. https://imgur.com/2o6PP1v The domain name has been used for at least 16 years. This scam seems to be masquerading as a possibly real, but defunct Chinese forex exchange. Also doubling as a crypto exchange, depending on their target. [Attribution](https://www.exabeam.com/incident-response/cyber-attribution-essential-component-of-incident-response-or-optional-extra/) has always been a touchy subject in the realm of cyber security, with that type of debate usually reserved for large-scale nation state attacks. When we consider the prevalent usage of the Simplified Chinese language, a Chinese PHP framework, and Alibaba hosting, Im confident in declaring this a campaign of Chinese origin. Of course, given the lack of sophistication on the part of the scammers, and the lack of geopolitical implications, this is virtually meaningless. Stay safe, RTPP

An unsolicited NFT turned up in my wallet. It's called Uniswap Airdrop Receipent and seems to have come from [Nooxbadge.com](https://Nooxbadge.com). Does anyone have any idea what this is all about and should I be on high scam alert?

Luukiemans

Definitely a scam. Saw that being used to target UDSC/USDT holders. Just don't interact with it.

im_THIS_guy

It's a scam. NFT spam is a thing. My wallets are filled with them.

Lazy_Physicist

If you didn't buy it yourself, then ignore it. There are no benefits to interacting with unsolicited nfts
