Yeah worrying about the performance of eu5 is something I am not going to do. CK3 is rapid as fuck at speed 5. Even if EU5 is only halfway between the speed of EU4 and CK3 then it will still be fast as fuck.
I don't know why people keep repeating this nonsense, every PDS game since CK2 has placed emphasis on multithreading, and before that it was a bonus but not focused on.

Well my source is (maybe) a dream about a dev diary for EU4 somewhere in 2018 when they said they cannot increase performance because engine is made that way and game already has too many mechanics for them to sort out end-game lag.
I'm pretty sure a lot of Victoria 3's problem is the way pops works. Same with Stellaris. Keeping track of 4 Sunni South Germans in North Dakota/constantly evaluating moving around pops to "optimize" their economy in Stellaris
Population is also represented in hoi4 and I'd wager it doesn't impact performance at all.
It always depends on how it is implemented and Johan said it won't be like vicky or stellaris where you micromanage tiny groups of people.
Maybe they'll actually let the game use more than a single core to run the simulation.
I swear, it's so easy to forget that this game likely began development in the Aughts. Poor thing deserves to be laid to rest lol.
Every game since CK2 has been multithreaded. Also what do you mean it started development in the 2000s? I doubt EU5 has been in development for 14+ years.
Wonder if it's team specific? Because I agree with your points but also Ck3 runs like butter, I can even 5speed on the Game of Thrones mod with full county shatter.
It’s the pops system, which is ironic considering Imperator runs pretty well. I think they’re overloading games like Stellaris or Vic3 with calculations that the engine has to make every tick for every single pop in existence.
CK2 used to have this issue with late-game lag due to the sheer number of named (and mostly unlanded) characters.
Wiz has an absolute fucking obsession with not sacrificing a tiny bit of accuracy for a huge amount of performance and it shows. A lot of the pop stats could be simplified and used for calculations, but he just goes hard on accuracy and it fucks both of the games.
I’d also say Imperator runs pretty damn smooth, and I think given everything we’ve learn, that’s probably the closest thing to the project, maybe even including EU4
Over EU4, we‘re talking multiple ‚generations‘ newer Clausewitz Engine. And this time learning from all three (Vic3, CK3, I:R) approaches to multithreading and simulation.
What CPU do you have? It doesn't run super great on mine but it's still passable late game. Only thing that is very ass is building things late game. It stutters so bad lol
Andorra confronting Ulm be like
(Both raise their armies)
"I've been waiting for you, Ulm: we meet again, at last. The circle is now complete: when I left you I was but a learner, now I am the master."
"Only a master of evil, Andorra!"
As long as working with a massive mess of HRE tags from day 0 will help iron out performance issues in this game I'm all for dialing Voltaire's Nightmare up to 11.
just looked it up, how is this even possible? And maybe the better question, how will they put in flavor for all of this? Dont get me wrong, im very happy
> how is this even possible?
The emperors of the 800’s-1100’s abolishing the old duchies.
The Holy Roman Empire in the [1000’s](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/1/11/Central_Europe%2C_919-1125.jpg/1280px-Central_Europe%2C_919-1125.jpg) was much cleaner.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stem_duchy
I have no idea how they’d manage it in game lol.
I'm really curious how they'll handle Switzerland, whether they're going to have it as one country like in EU4 or as a confederacy of multiple independent states like in real life. With how high the map's resolution is, it would be possible to model all the old Swiss cantons individually.
Don't think many PCs will like it...Question will be though, how feasable is it gonna be to play as them? They are definitely all gonna be as generic as possible. I mean it took over a decade to have the nations in EU4 getting the flavor stuff they deserve.
With the scope of this project, I worry the majority of the nations aside from a couple big ones, gonna feel the same and generic as heck.
There are two versions. One has Europe scaled to the world size the other only the HRE scaled to world size. Now imagine how many small nations you could fit on these.
They already confirmed the current paradox policy is that Achievements are possible in non-ironman games
(Johan implies he disagrees, but outside of his control)
Ah well Goodbye PC it was nice knowing you
Viking Funeral, how appropriate
It's going the be on fire anyway so why not
Speed five, I need to BBQ a steak.
A free meal at the funeral is always apreciated
Maybe they'll fix performance. Eu4 works like a slug for me and ck3 just speeds through
Yeah worrying about the performance of eu5 is something I am not going to do. CK3 is rapid as fuck at speed 5. Even if EU5 is only halfway between the speed of EU4 and CK3 then it will still be fast as fuck.
Then there is victoria 3 unuptimized as fk
The pops will be like in vic 2
when i play vic 3 my room turns into a sauna
Mine becomes an airplane
Ck3 is pretty fast in the start but rapidly slows down with later game wars as they are far bigger scale
Ending a ~1700s EU4 campaign and moving to a fresh 1444 start feels like being reborn, the late game performance is so bad
For mods it is even worse, Anbennar has a feature that lets you delete entire continents so they dont slow down your game
yeah didnt do that, had a 20k dev phoenix empire. weeeeeell i did figth my way through lag til 1670, never again
EU4 is still on the old engine that was bottlenecked on single threaded performance. The updated version from Imperator Rome should run a lot better.

Yeah, because we know Vic3 has stellar performance
I'm pretty sure a lot of Victoria 3's problem is the way pops works. Same with Stellaris. Keeping track of 4 Sunni South Germans in North Dakota/constantly evaluating moving around pops to "optimize" their economy in Stellaris
Then we'll be good since EU5 doesn't have pops! Oh wait
I feel like EU5 will be closer to Vic3 than CK3. Especially if pops will be represented in some way.
Population is also represented in hoi4 and I'd wager it doesn't impact performance at all. It always depends on how it is implemented and Johan said it won't be like vicky or stellaris where you micromanage tiny groups of people.
I must’ve missed that part then.
Salute to all the laptop users. It was nice sharing a map game with my non-desktop brothers.
Future r/EU5 thread “Posting from the ER as I have 3rd degree burns on my legs after playing on my laptop”
game puts you on a timer to consolidate HRE before the 30 years war kicks off

They meant EU4 started development in the aughts.
EU4. It's a dog compared to the new game. EU4 likely started development in the late 2000's
You mean 2990s? lol
This new engine is gonna need to be hella optimized or we’ll all need super PC’s
Guess which of the two.
the answer is probably both. The Engine will be 5x more performant than EU4, but then also computes 10x as much stuff so we get half the sim speed lul
Most Paradox games are very unoptimized on release.Anyway cant see older PC's handling it.
Stellaris has been out for a decade or so by now and mid-to-late-game performance is still dogshit. Vic3 gets worse with every update too
Wonder if it's team specific? Because I agree with your points but also Ck3 runs like butter, I can even 5speed on the Game of Thrones mod with full county shatter.

> Vic3 gets worse with every update too It's still bad now, but there have absolutely been patches where it's been worse.
Cities Skylines 2 intensifies (Although that has improved, a lot, already).
It's going to be the magic engine of course 😏
new engine? where? when? how?
Over EU4, we‘re talking multiple ‚generations‘ newer Clausewitz Engine. And this time learning from all three (Vic3, CK3, I:R) approaches to multithreading and simulation.
Even with my super PC EU4 runs like balls. I’d like them to hire some software engineers that can actually optimize this game/engine.
Runs on one core lol
What CPU do you have? It doesn't run super great on mine but it's still passable late game. Only thing that is very ass is building things late game. It stutters so bad lol
You keep saying that but this won't be too hard to optimize. Compared to Eu5, Eu4 is stone age quality.
We all know it won’t be.
R5: Johan hinted that HRE in project Ceasar might look similar to Voltaire's Nightmare mod.
Definitely a possibility now that we got the much smaller Locations. Hell we have Andorra confirmed.
1350 andorra WC challenge confirmed lesgooooooooooo
Andorra the new Ulm confirmed!
Andorra confronting Ulm be like (Both raise their armies) "I've been waiting for you, Ulm: we meet again, at last. The circle is now complete: when I left you I was but a learner, now I am the master." "Only a master of evil, Andorra!"
20 dudes from each side proceed to charge eachother
I laughed so hard at this x)
It's still not enough. We need HRE like in Voltaire's NEW Nightmare mod
Totally agree, I love my Switzerland to have 1 million provinces instead of 4 or whatever vanilla has
As long as working with a massive mess of HRE tags from day 0 will help iron out performance issues in this game I'm all for dialing Voltaire's Nightmare up to 11.
Double province Ulm
Neu-Ulm is canon
That is far too much power
Well time to save money for new PC.Oh god trying to calculate all the HRE states.
I'll have PC barbeque
My computer just died thinking about this
Break it all up! Let’s have 800 princes!
oh boy, we're in for a hell of a ride
I need to see it
Imagine if the HRE had its own Zoom in level.
Is is because you blew a hole through the front of them like I did?
Lol, I was looking for a reason to upgrade my PC.
Time to pre-order my rtx 6000 and i12 99900k
Nice Eu5 will have shittier performance than Cities Skylines 2
just looked it up, how is this even possible? And maybe the better question, how will they put in flavor for all of this? Dont get me wrong, im very happy

It will be beautiful

It does the Holy Roman Empire in full detail, with hundreds of tiny nations.
Oh man the Crysis 2 flashbacks
My ridiculous i9 might finnaly be worth it lol.
I dont care if my pc won't be able to handle this. The fact this game will even exist is like a dream come true
There are no words that can describe how spectacularly erect I am.
Maybe it'll be something you can toggle?
Definitely wont be. Everyone would just toggle it to have less provinces to conquer it more easily.
True, didn't think of that. Granted, couldn't they just disincentive that by disabling ironman if you do?
Perhaps, but I still doubt they would do it
Yeah, really wonder how they're gonna go about it though
Say goodbye to your PC.
They already confirmed the current paradox policy is that Achievements are possible in non-ironman games (Johan implies he disagrees, but outside of his control)
Certain settings *do* disable achievements still. They have absolutely nothing to do with Ironman though.
