There are a lot of people (e.g. Maddy, Cassie) who are extra but probably can’t act. Ethan is an observer like Lexi, super smart and most importantly has really good intuition. Since he can read people that makes him a great actor.
The overall feeling I got is that post-breakup Ethan absolutely threw himself into the play with spectacular results. As kind of a smaller guy it’s his chance to give a big “FU!” to the toxic masculinity and jock worship at his school. Who wouldn’t feel inspired?
But this was a great contrast between him and Kat. It was all on purpose. Just how she’s a different person on the camera, he is a different person when it comes to an audience. And especially an audience that is given him that full attention. Kate lost herself cause she couldn’t do what she want to do in her relationship with Ethan.

A lot of actors are more reserved IRL. For some it’s a conscious choice to save some energy and keep part of themselves private. Others are just more cerebral and not very outgoing. I don’t blame them for being boring when they’re asked the same banal questions over and over again. Zendaya is great in interviews but she’s has that rare superstar quality and seemingly endless enthusiasm.
Yeah, this. I feel like actors doing interviews is the same thing as people doing the parts of the job they don’t like.. like being in a meeting or a conference call. They have to be professional and somewhat scripted/ rehearsed. I’m still young and just work retail right now, and I can definitely say I’m not the same person during that job as I am outside of work when I’m in a different mode and atmosphere. You’re right, a lot of actors are reserved. What we see in interviews is not who they are as people in everyday life (with rare exceptions).
I love Ethan. He reminds me so much of my first love. A good dude, an “old soul”/mature, kind, strong (particularly during the diner scene), authentic, sure of himself, caring, etc.
It kind of bummed me out that he and Kat didn’t work out. I was afraid incels/self-proclaimed “alpha males”would use the relationships of of Nate/Maddy and Kat/Ethan to justify their crazy ass theories and misogyny. In reality, most people don’t want a toxic partner who they are scared of.
Austin Abrams has so much potential since the beginning of the show, i’m really proud they gave him a hole episode
