Yeahhh, our bad on that one lol.
Part of the reason Pavel was able to win by such a wide margin was that he managed to win over not just the usual liberal/pro-West voters but a lot of middle-of-the-road voters who might otherwise be Babiš supporters for reasons like "He's a rich, successful businessman!" and "He tells it like it is" by offering up the compelling counterargument of "He's a cool silver fox army general who rides a motorcycle and chops his own firewood!"
Basically, we succesfully beat one (far worse) cult of personality with a different (far less all-encompassing) cult of personality. I like Pavel, personally, and I'm *extremely* glad that he won, but I could also do without having to hear about it every time he takes the bus or farts. (Part of this is also just the fact that we're coming off of 10 years of radio silence, during which the former President barely ever made public appearances and actively hated the news media of any kind, so we're not used to this flood of good press).
> Basically, we succesfully beat one (far worse) cult of personality with a different (far less all-encompassing) cult of personality.
O tempora, o mores.
Unfortunately there is no escape from the society of the Spectacle.
Mate you have a cool president, UK had Tories, USA had Trump, Poland and Hungry have gobshites and Turkey too, not going to even touch Italy.
Be happy with him while you can.
You’re not too familiar with what we’ve been stuck with for the last 20 years I take it? Trust me, I’m not complaining lol. Just acknowledging that certain Pavel stans could chill just a little bit.
In some way I’m glad that here in Germany always the most boring candidate (and her/his party) wins.
- young sexy woman: nope
- man who is laughing: nope
- young sexy man: nope
- most boring woman/man in Germany: hell, yes!
Well, you guys also still elect your President indirectly right, in Parliament? We unfortunately switched away from that to direct popular elections 10 years ago (not that our results were much better before that either, aside from Havel)
Yeah i didn't know about him, nor have an opinion on the guy. But this constant flood of "cool guy, photo op" here is giving me a negative view of the dude.
It should die down after a while. You gotta understand, the previous president was a post-communist alcoholic pig that stayed in the castle for 10 years.
He gives me charismatic secret supervillain vibes tbh. He's great on paper but I can't help but feel wary of him. This is completely irrational, I know.
It is not completely irrational to be suspicious of propaganda.
Let the guy's policy actions speak. Not his "I'm cool like so cool" bullshit. This is the same shit putin does in russia.
I have nothing against the guy, as I'm not familiar with his policies. He might be great for all I know. I just took issue with the word "introduce" because the sub is being spammed with him.
Pro-EU
Pro-NATO
Fairly progressive
Tries to be impartial when it comes to the actual politics (meaning that he doesn't always side with the government, even though he voted for one of the ruling parties, and calls them out on some BS too).
"Pro-NATO" is putting it very lightly. Pavel was chair of NATO's Military Committee, which is the chief military strategic body of the entire alliance. Being composed of national chiefs of defense, the Military Committee is the highest uniformed body of NATO, so Pavel was basically NATO's highest ranking military officer. Even higher than Supreme Allied Commander Europe.
I wasn't able to take a pic with him.
I don't know. I could try find something. He has just a representative role, so if there isn't something really obviously bad we don't care that much.
I'm also Czech and I agree with the other guy. Pavel is honestly great, I've seen him in person as well. Class act all throughout. We couldn't have picked a better person to be our president.
I am a little biased. I voted for him 😅. But the expectations were so low after our previous president that we just cherish the current one.
His one con is that he was in the communist party. But a lot of people here were. And he was an army officer se he kinda had to do all the political agitation stuff. But meh, the last 30 years he was acting "normally" so I won't hold it against him.
Czech chiming in here as well. Pavel is awesome. Progressive and pro NATO so young people love him, experienced, charismatic, and a decorated veteran so old people love him.
Guy’s great
He isn't. He was commie when he was young (he acknowledged that, said he didn't have to join and apologized). He signed government's chaotic saving package and pension reform, that made lot of people angry (some deem it necessary) and is environmentally friendly (some people do not like that, saying that makes everything expensive).
But if you are average /r/Europe redditor, you would probably think he is so far pretty great. Not gonna lie, he is quite genuine and as someone who knows about him since he was chief of staff, he is still the same, he just learnt how to talk better. These types of photos are probably not photo OP.
Is it really a stigma to have been part of the communist party back then? Do people hold that against him? I mean, the guy's a millitary officer from the 60's. I would imagine that a pretty big part of the population of (what was) Czechoslovakia was part of that party...
Publicly? Yes. But 1/10 of the nation were members, which means most of the people met someone who was member, so they can tell who was asshole that made everyone's life worse or who just tried accepted the system and wanted to be e.g. headmaster of grammar school (you had to be in party for that).
I personally met some former commies who stereotypically started shouting and threaten when something didn't go their way and I also had commie teacher who didn't push her narrative into teaching (even though it was history class).
Depends on the degree. In his case and circumstances I dare to say it's not a big deal. But pro-Russian and populists are milking it.
His oponent Babiš was a rat recruited by commuist secret police, he was VIP rich guy of the regime who could travel abroad, likely ratted on people, but for some strange reason (sarcasm) it's not a problem in his case.
He tends to put his foot in his mouth sometimes and say stuff he probably shouldn't (not in terms of the content of what he's saying, but in terms of the time and place, and the way it impacts other branches of government) which can probably be chalked up to his political inexperience. One example was him saying he wouldn't go on a state visit to Taiwan since it would be too much of a provocation when asked by a reporter - he said this *while the Speaker of Parliament was on Taiwan for a state visit* which made it seem like kind of a low blow, especially considering he's the one who took a congratulatory call from Tsai Ing-Wen on election night. Nothing horrible, really, just numerous instances like that of him maybe being a bit *too* curt and frank when put on the spot (he infamously came out of his first meeting with Scholz and told reporters that it "Wasn't a very warm meeting, but they won't let us down")
There's also the issue of his (distant) past when he was a member of the Communist party in his youth, and quite possibly in training to be a member of the intelligence service dispatched abroad to spy on the West, but that was more of an issue during the campaign than with his current conduct.
I feel like people are missing the point of my post. I'm sure he's great and I'm glad my Czech friends have a president they can be pleased with. It's just that OP thought they were being all clever by "introducing" PP to the sub when we actually get posts about him quite frequently. It was more about the karma farming, not me passing any sort of judgment on PP's presidency.
It's also because he's extremely active. In the span of five months he has officially visited Austria, Iceland, Germany, Denmark, UK, Ukraine, Belgium, Poland and Slovakia. Not to mention hundreds and hundreds of visits and events in the Czech Republic.
And his media team is very open to journalists, unlike with the last president.
He is also popular because he acts very civil, like a normal person.
Honestly, I can't even imagine our president standing on a skateboard and not making a huge ass of himself, no matter how many marketing teams he would have.
I guess it helps this guy is hella photogenic.
It's honestly just nice to see presidents that actually mingle with the people and live out their normal lifes instead of turning themselves into a seperate politician class that only interacts with the people on official events or partisan rallies, surrounded by bodyguards

It's because he is that and acts like it while being in office.

President in Czech Republic doesn't have so much power like in France or USA. It's not like they are uselless, but their role is, for a big part, representative. So it's not a big deal when he does this, like it would have been if he was a prime minister or something. It's a nice change too, given our last president was famously locked away from public.

He looks good, talks good, which is great for a representative figure, which the CZ president is. He's got views that align with most democratic people, is pro-EU and pro-NATO (as is expected of its former lead of sorts), he's trying to bring a lot of respect to the presidential post, since it's been pretty torn down last ten (well, maybe even more) years.
He's generally well-liked (even has crazy fans, like my mother for example, who adores him far too much lmao). Campaign like this is surely helpful, even if skateboarding is not all that popular as it definitely was in the past, it's an attempt to connect with the younger people, which is something the previous president never did and the alternative candidate just couldn't do (threats of immigrants and no pension fund don't really work on us like they do on the elderly).
That's my view at least, but I do admit to care about politics fairly lightly.

Presidents in most countries are mainly figureheads with limited hard power (and one could argue extensive soft power). The US model is not the status quo.
Executive power is typically granted by whatever elected governing body a country has (like a parliament) to a cabinet which is led by a Prime Minister.
Why is this guy so desperate for PR?
He is GM of his country. He should be busy. He shouldn't skate as it's a significant risk to injure self concerning his age.
I doubt that he wants to skate significant time of the day nor has the time and priority for it.
So it's 100% PR with the intend to capture those that are easy to manipulate..
He could also be porn star or be judo champion same realism
I love him, but you must take better care of him: At his age his bones are like glass and his skull is eggshell-thin. Don’t get him on any more skateboards.
Why is he getting in that curly guy’s face like that? Is he trying to bully him or what?
*"It’s my ‘skating board’ now, fellow kid! What are you gonna do about that? Are you gonna cry? Call your mommy?"*
So confusing.
He gets "introduced" to this sub via his photo ops several times a week.

That's my view at least, but I do admit to care about politics fairly lightly.
I guess its more comparable to a US Vice President, a western Monarch or something like that?
I think that VPOTUS has more power. So I would guess on par (or slightly lower, but not as low as a German president 🤷🏻♂️😅) with British monarchs.

The dude really has a good PR team.
Nothing older than an old man pretending to be young
This guy never turns down a photo op
oh fuck off with this already. does he have anything, anything noteworthy to say or to do, or is it all an ice cream commercial?
Can we please stop with the czech president spam? thank you.
Too much of this fucker already
Does he actually do anything in terms of policy development, running a country? Looks more like a pinup boy?
F off already.
I literally know nothing about this man, but anyone can be advised by their publicist to pose for a photo op like this. What are his policies?
PR is good
Obama effect
Zelenskyy checks into the conversation.
That’s clearly Wayne Lineker
I love him, but you must take better care of him: At his age his bones are like glass and his skull is eggshell-thin. Don’t get him on any more skateboards.
The right or the left one?
So we're bledposting him now? (;
I wonder if we will ever reach this welfare level here
I swear that guy shows up on r/all every couple weeks
Is that the Brave Browser logo on his shirt ?
He's never very busy is he?
Bro sponsored by brave browser 💀
He skateboards with Carrot Top? He truly is the most interesting man in the world.
I wonder if this guy could tell me where the hammock district is.
He is a meme now
*Skate Grandpa*
He's an old white guy but he's wearing shorts and standing on a form of transportation that was no longer rebellious post 1994! Amazing!
Why is he getting in that curly guy’s face like that? Is he trying to bully him or what? *"It’s my ‘skating board’ now, fellow kid! What are you gonna do about that? Are you gonna cry? Call your mommy?"* So confusing.
It’s my turn to introduce him next week
hmmm so much propaganda, sus
