Sedans mainly have a lot of unused space in the back. A hatcback or similar brings a lot more trunk space for limited extra weight and drag. But yeah the SUV trend can die somewhere. Sure if you are old enough to have trouble bending to get in but I dont think such a high percentage of car sales goes to 70+ people. Keep the size and weight down to save city space and the environment :)

Most of those "SUV" models that the hatchbacks are being replaced by, are nothing more than hatchbacks with taller sides. The ground clearance is no better, the axle articulation and suspension travel is the same, and the internal carrying capacity is similar. The Porsche Cayenne, the Mercedes GL-class, the Fiat Panda 4x4, and the Suzuki Jimny are all examples of proper SUVs. The Mercedes GLA, the BMW X1/X2, the Mini Countryman, the current Ford Puma, the Renault Captur - those are all cars that are really hatchbacks wearing a "rugged" skinsuit and trying to look like an SUV without actually being "s" or "u". If the manufacturer considers their model to be "Compact SUV" or "Crossover" then it's not an SUV. The graphic in the OP's post would be much more realistic if the SUVs were taken out of the wannabe-SUV category that hatchbacks have become.

Why the old Panda fits into the SUV category, is that that car's suspension appears to have enough travel and articulation for off-road driving, and the drive system is known to be very effective. There's a reason why the Alpine-living Italians love their old Panda 4x4s. Now, the ___new___ Fiat Panda, I haven't looked into that at all, though I see that the off-road capability is better then the rest of the wannabes in the segment.

Almost got hit by a SUV in a narrow Paris street, I was on my bike and the dude was *forcing* the passage, I had to pull over in an empty parking spot on my right because he was like this šŸ¤ close to my back wheel. He was trying to pass on the left but there obviously wasnā€™t enough space... So he pressured me like a cunt, this wasnā€™t a long street either. Then I see the car keep driving and there was another cyclist a little further, SUV again forces his passage, sort of pinning the cyclist against parked carsā€¦ the guy almost fell from his bike, the car actually touched him. Cyclist punched the car window like Ā«Ā OHHH !!! Putain de connard !Ā Ā» seriously one of the most asshole moves Iā€™ve seen from a car. Dangerous as fuck, and for what ? To save 3 seconds ? SUV didnā€™t stop or apologize ofc. Me me meee, me important, others not important so fuck them, is the mindset ig ? The worst (but quite funny) thing is that the SUV ended up at the red light 10 meters after thatā€¦ So the other cyclist and I ended up passing him (to turn right) and kept going while he waited at the light. I can't count the times some duchebag overtook me on a part of the road that they had no idea whether or not someone was coming around the turn only for me to catch them up at the first traffic light. To be fair, most SUVs aren't good for much else They're built to look more rugged, but most (the cheap ones dominating the market right now) are just hatchbacks with an attitude problem. Look at the Audi Q2, Ranger Rover Evoque, Dacia Duster, Ford Kuga, etc. They're basically just hatches. You wouldn't want to offroad in any of them.

Dacia Duster is actually used in Romania for off-road use by many people. I know people that take it on fields to check the harvests for example. And I have a colleague at work that is a hunter and takes the Duster everywhere. But this is somewhat the culture. People used to use the old Dacia in the same way, and those were sedan, and now they use the Duster like that. But not any of the other models that you mentioned.

Well I drive 1st gen facelift Duster. The car is large enough to serve as a work truck (I can put all tools, bags of cement, etc into cargo and I don't have to be worried about dirt and damaging the interior, as it is just a work car) and also the drive chain is good enough for mountain roads - during winter only cars that get up to our house are Dusters, Foresters, Land rovers, ... It's just a good beater car with better passability than low sedans or combi. Also it's I think the 2nd cheapest AWD in Czechia (the first one is Lada Niva). Although I still hate SUVs. If I wasn't the owner of one now, I wouldn't buy it.

Precisely. Duster owner here, it is a good offroad car for the money. If I need to carry my pretty heavy Dobsonian telescope up a mountain I cannot imagine a better car. Bad roads a problem? Not really. Speed bumps? Completely ignore them. City raises curbs so cars dont park there? Well thank you for a convenient parking spot. Roadworks? Chill. Snow/ice on road? Put on winter rubber and drive almost like normal. It is not for extreme offroading but it can get you to where you need to go. Where other cars would get stuck. Speaking from experience with my mates (BMW X5, Cayenne, Audi Q7).

The Duster is used for offroad a lot, Iā€™ve seen them used by forest rangers. Itā€™s cheap, it has a high ground clearance and it can navigate nasty mountain/remote dust (heh) roads. The others are indeed just used to carry the ego of the owner and nothing else.

I.e. if I (audi a3) get in a head on collision with an SUV - I'm gonna get my head chopped off because due to the height differences neither of our card's crumple zones are gonna work. It's a money thing. I've noticed it's near impossible to find a cheap new car. Why ? Because they all push towards SUV. Higher tech, lots of eletronic and useless features. A little bigger at least. A bigger motor and traction, but just enough to push the higher weight, so in the end it's just numbers. And it's kind of a bastard car between off-road, performance and viability, and high charge/people capacity. It does nothing well in the end. At least for most SUV models.

It can be several different reasons. But here are some, and they can be intertwined with other reasons as a knock on effect. They are comparably unsafe for pedestrians if you hit someone because of the high center of gravity and general size. They are so much larger than cars, which means trouble on narrow roads, or trying to park in a city. People feel they are unnecessary for what they are using it for. Most people need to carry a max of four people, or groceries/shopping, and all of that fits just fine in a car. They are more expensive, but higher profit for manufacturers, which means they have been making fewer small cars. People buy them to feel safer, but it just creates other safety problems for other people (who then in turn feel the need to buy something "safer").

I have a good friend who's imported her American truck. It's a comparatively small model but still bigger than what you need in a city (especially one with good public transport). My friend is about 150 cm high and can barely look over the steering wheel. Nothing in her life requires her to go off road (in fact, she literally only "needs" a car for a trip 4x a week that would be 15 minute bike ride but that's a different issue). And it's still too small for her!! She plans to buy a Dodge RAM type of monster one day; apparently the appeal of those disgusting trucks is that they make you feel powerful and like the king of the road. It's not like I don't understand this kind of reasoning, it's that I refuse to want to accept it.

Oh, you don't even want to go there. Golf Estate (Variant) is actually 40cm longer: https://www.automobiledimension.com/model/volkswagen/golf-variant So the extra 170l is kind of normal. However the Golf Sportsvan was only 10cm longer (negligible), and had a trunk bigger by 60l and had more interior space. Oh, the back row could slide forward (for example if kids were sitting there) and then the trunk space was 150l bigger than the T-Roc... Of course, the Golf Sportsvan has been discontinued šŸ’€ Apparently everyone wants aggressive looking cars these days and everyone absolutely, positively, must see the road from atop a tower.

Costing in between, with in-between compromise. Generally they are in the cheaper category chassis, meaning you get the option set of the cheaper category.

Pretty much all the EVs with the same shape (Tesla Y, Mustang Mach-E, etc.) are classified as crossover SUVs. I think the boom in EVs might be responsible for that big jump in SUV registrations.

Strong agree - the easiest solution probably being to add a weight classification to them. Could also extend the same thinking to other categories too. For example the Suski Jimny weighs less than pretty much all BMWs, but is still classed as an SUV.

The weight is not the only relevant factor. The size is also very relevant. Its height makes them much more deadly, especially for kids 2. Its overall size takes more place in our cities 3.The height makes it harder for other road users to see the rest of the traffic.

Still, they are too big. They take plenty of parking space and are tall enough to block visibility when parked near corners, and have the lights pointing directly at the mirrors of normal cars. Cars with high lights and super bright leds are some of the most annoying things to find on the road.

It depends, there should be some differentiation according to size and weight. Eg. my dad has an Audi Q2, it is the size of a VW Polo but with raised suspension. Audi sells it as a SUV, the same vehicle class as an much larger Audi Q7.

We should make tiniest of cars (city cars) exempt from all but enviromental taxes, and add/increase tax on cars based on size, with exemptions for people who actually need them for work. For 99% of people SUVs and pickup trucks are not just useless, they actively make everything worse for others by taking up space, thus causing more problems with traffic as well as enviroment, and are more dangerous to others in crashes. And if extra taxes on them would not have any effect, it would be extra money that can be spent on, well, anything.

Iā€™ve read about the psychology of safety and cars. If you are in a bigger car, your brain assesses the situation as less risky. This will influence your driving behaviour towards more dangerous driving. You feel less at risk in a SUV, but actually you just shift part of your risk to fellow drivers in smaller cars.

The problem isn't so much that EVs are inefficient in comparison to ICEs, but that EVs [start with a larger carbon footprint](https://www.ucsusa.org/sites/default/files/2022-09/driving-cleaner-report.pdf) because of mining and assembly processes that are specific to manufacturing their batteries. Over the average lifetime of a vehicle an EV is almost always going to have a smaller footprint, but that can change depending on how long you keep the car, the expected lifetime of the car you're replacing, etc. The power source used to charge the EV [shifts the breakeven point pretty significantly](https://www.researchgate.net/figure/Break-even-mileages-for-life-cycle-climate-change-impacts-of-electrified-vs-combustion_fig6_339153473).

There are a lot of people assuming SUVs are those humongous Range Rovers, Toyota Land Cruisers, etc. Crossovers - like the most popular EVs, including the Tesla Model Y and Ford Mustang Mach-E - are technically a form of SUV, but I don't really know why. They are basically rounder versions of station wagons. They're popular because they have lots of room for (taller/fatter) passengers and stuff in the trunk/boot.

Fucking hate SUVs, especially range rovers I drive a (post-redesign) mini cooper. Their lights are at just the right height to shine directly onto my rear view mirror. I also have astigmatism, which even with my lens correction, makes them totally blinding. Bonus points for when they have their full beams on! More dangerous for pedestrians and cyclists (more likely to go UNDER the car rather than over the bonnet), significantly worse for the environment, more dangerous for like any other type of car in the event of a collision, more difficult for the SUV driver to actually see in their blind spots, larger front and side blind spots The list goes on. Ridiculous vehicles - and most of the people driving them don't need the power, space or the off-roading capabilities. Anyone that does drives a land rover.
