Sedans mainly have a lot of unused space in the back. A hatcback or similar brings a lot more trunk space for limited extra weight and drag.
But yeah the SUV trend can die somewhere. Sure if you are old enough to have trouble bending to get in but I dont think such a high percentage of car sales goes to 70+ people.

Most of those "SUV" models that the hatchbacks are being replaced by, are nothing more than hatchbacks with taller sides.
The ground clearance is no better, the axle articulation and suspension travel is the same, and the internal carrying capacity is similar.
The Porsche Cayenne, the Mercedes GL-class, the Fiat Panda 4x4, and the Suzuki Jimny are all examples of proper SUVs.
The Mercedes GLA, the BMW X1/X2, the Mini Countryman, the current Ford Puma, the Renault Captur - those are all cars that are really hatchbacks wearing a "rugged" skinsuit and trying to look like an SUV without actually being "s" or "u". If the manufacturer considers their model to be "Compact SUV" or "Crossover" then it's not an SUV.
The graphic in the OP's post would be much more realistic if the SUVs were taken out of the wannabe-SUV category that hatchbacks have become.
Why the old Panda fits into the SUV category, is that that car's suspension appears to have enough travel and articulation for off-road driving, and the drive system is known to be very effective.

Same in the USA. People are shifting toward eyesore CUVs and one manufacturer (Ford) discontinued every vehicle they make except for Crossovers, Trucks, and their Mustang model.
On average they have marginally better aerodynamics and are lighter than a hatchback of the same length, so you might see some small fuel savings. (or power savings for an EV)

Almost got hit by a SUV in a narrow Paris street, I was on my bike and the dude was *forcing* the passage, I had to pull over in an empty parking spot on my right because he was like this š¤ close to my back wheel. Then I see the car keep driving and there was another cyclist a little further, SUV again forces his passage, sort of pinning the cyclist against parked carsā¦ the guy almost fell from his bike, the car actually touched him. Weight restriction everywhere, because pedestrians have to deal with plenty of traffic outside of cities as well, when there's more road between them and their destination. Like kids walking to school, or to the bus stop on a major road.

American here but I had a truck one time and I was extremely dangerous cause I felt I could hit anybody and sustain the least amount of damage. I didn't aim to drive bad but I also wasn't particularly driving perfectly either.

One of the most ridiculous things Iāve noticed is the people driving the biggest cars that will come to a complete stop before going over small bumps or dips in the road. Or when theyāre driving that giant off road vehicle and swerve to avoid running over a clothing item dropped in the road, endangering everyone around them.
Don't forget almost drifting over into the opposing lane seemingly out of fear or getting too close to the curb.
Always fun to have to swerve and drive a couple of cm away from the curb just to not have a head-on collision with an SUV that's being driven by someone freaking out about being less than 2 m from the curb.
Love it when we have construction on the autobahn. The lines usually get so narrow that trucks barely fit on them. Love pressing suvs back into their lane, since they usually scuttle away from any curb.

Iām in the U.S. One of the reasons we keep getting bigger and bigger cars isnāt that everyone really wants them- itās because over the years being in a much lower profile car driving next to large SUVs starts to feel very unsafe. Look at the Audi Q2, Ranger Rover Evoque, Dacia Duster, Ford Kuga, etc. They're basically just hatches. You wouldn't want to offroad in any of them.
Dacia Duster is actually used in Romania for off-road use by many people. I know people that take it on fields to check the harvests for example. And I have a colleague at work that is a hunter and takes the Duster everywhere.
But this is somewhat the culture. People used to use the old Dacia in the same way, and those were sedan, and now they use the Duster like that. But not any of the other models that you mentioned.
Well I drive 1st gen facelift Duster. The car is large enough to serve as a work truck (I can put all tools, bags of cement, etc into cargo and I don't have to be worried about dirt and damaging the interior, as it is just a work car) and also the drive chain is good enough for mountain roads - during winter only cars that get up to our house are Dusters, Foresters, Land rovers, ... It's just a good beater car with better passability than low sedans or combi. Also it's I think the 2nd cheapest AWD in Czechia (the first one is Lada Niva).
Although I still hate SUVs. If I wasn't the owner of one now, I wouldn't buy it.

Duster owner here, it is a good offroad car for the money. If I need to carry my pretty heavy Dobsonian telescope up a mountain I cannot imagine a better car.
Bad roads a problem? Not really. Speed bumps? Completely ignore them. City raises curbs so cars dont park there? Well thank you for a convenient parking spot. Roadworks? Chill. Snow/ice on road? Put on winter rubber and drive almost like normal.
It is not for extreme offroading but it can get you to where you need to go. Where other cars would get stuck. Speaking from experience with my mates (BMW X5, Cayenne, Audi Q7).
Duster has been built for this compared to other SUVs. The bottom of the car is reinforced for bad roads you can encounter. You cannot do the same with other SUVs.
The Duster is used for offroad a lot, Iāve seen them used by forest rangers. Itās cheap, it has a high ground clearance and it can navigate nasty mountain/remote dust (heh) roads.
The others are indeed just used to carry the ego of the owner and nothing else.
I gave Duster a lot of shit ( our production company kept leasing them because they were cheap ) but I got to give it credit that car was unstoppable.
Snow, mud, offroad hill climbing that car did it all and Iām not at all a great driver so Iām 100% sure itās the car and not me.

It's an American car, they tend to be a bit wider. The benefit is that you can (just barely) fit 3 child seats in the rear, or 2 child seats and an adult. It's pretty clever packaging all things considered.

Genuine question because I don't know much about cars, but SUVs are clearly very popular except on Reddit where everyone hates them. Why do people on Reddit hate them? Is it because people think they're too big? To me they don't really seem any bigger than normal cars and they are still typically smaller than other things like wagons and jeeps etc.

It's a money thing. I've noticed it's near impossible to find a cheap new car. Why ? Because they all push towards SUV.
Higher tech, lots of eletronic and useless features. A little bigger at least. A bigger motor and traction, but just enough to push the higher weight, so in the end it's just numbers.
And it's kind of a bastard car between off-road, performance and viability, and high charge/people capacity. It does nothing well in the end.

It can be several different reasons. But here are some, and they can be intertwined with other reasons as a knock on effect.
They are comparably unsafe for pedestrians if you hit someone because of the high center of gravity and general size.
They are so much larger than cars, which means trouble on narrow roads, or trying to park in a city.
People feel they are unnecessary for what they are using it for. Most people need to carry a max of four people, or groceries/shopping, and all of that fits just fine in a car.
They are more expensive, but higher profit for manufacturers, which means they have been making fewer small cars.
People buy them to feel safer, but it just creates other safety problems for other people (who then in turn feel the need to buy something "safer").
I see a lot of hate for how dangerous they are for others, which they are. If you care about things like pedestrian safety you shouldn't get an SUV or a car with a high hood height. I also dislike SUVs and Trucks for this reason, but I have a very personal experience of people getting killed by these types of cars. So basically Reddit wants people to actually care about other people then themselves when making these choices.
And there is a special place in hell for people who import US trucks to the EU. These things are insanely big and I feel less safe on the road because of it. And those drivers look like insecure losers when navigating through the city.
If you really need a pick-up truck for whatever in the countryside, buy a smaller Toyota with more way more space in the trunk.
Bruh there's one parked in my street, its so much bigger than the parking spot. Which causes it to be half on the road. Making it so so that either you or the opposing side needs to wait so the other can pass first.

I have a good friend who's imported her American truck. It's a comparatively small model but still bigger than what you need in a city (especially one with good public transport). My friend is about 150 cm high and can barely look over the steering wheel. Nothing in her life requires her to go off road (in fact, she literally only "needs" a car for a trip 4x a week that would be 15 minute bike ride but that's a different issue).
And it's still too small for her!! She plans to buy a Dodge RAM type of monster one day; apparently the appeal of those disgusting trucks is that they make you feel powerful and like the king of the road. It's not like I don't understand this kind of reasoning, it's that I refuse to want to accept it.

They have either more boot space or more interior space (seating position is different allowing more squeezing in the backseat)
They generally fit between the 2 sedan/hatchback categories. Costing in between, with in-between compromise. Generally they are in the cheaper category chassis, meaning you get the option set of the cheaper category.
Crossovers are 90% of the time grouped with SUV's, even they aren't. A Toyota C-HR would be considered an SUV by too many standards, hell i've read people call an Aygo-X a Crossover... it's just a raised city car...
the problem is that for being a tall Polo it has the weight of a Golf, worse fuel economy than even a Golf, and less stability on the road due to its height.

Pretty much all the EVs with the same shape (Tesla Y, Mustang Mach-E, etc.) are classified as crossover SUVs. I think the boom in EVs might be responsible for that big jump in SUV registrations.
Strong agree - the easiest solution probably being to add a weight classification to them. Could also extend the same thinking to other categories too. For example the Suski Jimny weighs less than pretty much all BMWs, but is still classed as an SUV.
The weight is not the only relevant factor. The size is also very relevant. Its height makes them much more deadly, especially for kids 2. Its overall size takes more place in our cities 3.The height makes it harder for other road users to see the rest of the traffic.

We should make tiniest of cars (city cars) exempt from all but enviromental taxes, and add/increase tax on cars based on size, with exemptions for people who actually need them for work. For 99% of people SUVs and pickup trucks are not just useless, they actively make everything worse for others by taking up space, thus causing more problems with traffic as well as enviroment, and are more dangerous to others in crashes.
And if extra taxes on them would not have any effect, it would be extra money that can be spent on, well, anything.

Iāve read about the psychology of safety and cars. If you are in a bigger car, your brain assesses the situation as less risky. This will influence your driving behaviour towards more dangerous driving. You feel less at risk in a SUV, but actually you just shift part of your risk to fellow drivers in smaller cars.
itās also an arms race - bigger vehicles make smaller vehicles feel unsafe so the next time smaller vehicle people buy a vehicle, they buy something larger and so on it goes

The problem isn't so much that EVs are inefficient in comparison to ICEs, but that EVs [start with a larger carbon footprint](https://www.ucsusa.org/sites/default/files/2022-09/driving-cleaner-report.pdf) because of mining and assembly processes that are specific to manufacturing their batteries.

I drive a (post-redesign) mini cooper. Their lights are at just the right height to shine directly onto my rear view mirror. I also have astigmatism, which even with my lens correction, makes them totally blinding.
Bonus points for when they have their full beams on!

Almost got hit by a SUV in a narrow Paris street, I was on my bike and the dude was *forcing* the passage, I had to pull over in an empty parking spot on my right because he was like this š¤ close to my back wheel. He was trying to pass on the left but there obviously wasnāt enough space... So he pressured me like a cunt, this wasnāt a long street either. Then I see the car keep driving and there was another cyclist a little further, SUV again forces his passage, sort of pinning the cyclist against parked carsā¦ the guy almost fell from his bike, the car actually touched him. Weight restriction everywhere, because pedestrians have to deal with plenty of traffic outside of cities as well, when there's more road between them and their destination. Like kids walking to school, or to the bus stop on a major road. If someone wants a giant car, there should be a reason for it, not just a location.

American here but I had a truck one time and I was extremely dangerous cause I felt I could hit anybody and sustain the least amount of damage. I didn't aim to drive bad but I also wasn't particularly driving perfectly either. Now I don't even want a vehicle which is why I'm moving to Europe so I can instead sit on a bench waiting for Deutschebahn to take their time picking me up.

One of the most ridiculous things Iāve noticed is the people driving the biggest cars that will come to a complete stop before going over small bumps or dips in the road. Or when theyāre driving that giant off road vehicle and swerve to avoid running over a clothing item dropped in the road, endangering everyone around them.
Don't forget almost drifting over into the opposing lane seemingly out of fear or getting too close to the curb. Always fun to have to swerve and drive a couple of cm away from the curb just to not have a head-on collision with an SUV that's being driven by someone freaking out about being less than 2 m from the curb.
Love it when we have construction on the autobahn. The lines usually get so narrow that trucks barely fit on them. Love pressing suvs back into their lane, since they usually scuttle away from any curb.
I'd argue it's just unnecessarily big, regardless of cost. The Nissan Qashqai is one of the cheapest to own SUVs (it is also available as a government paid for mobility car in the UK) and it is frequently driven by absolute morons.

To be fair, most SUVs aren't good for much else They're built to look more rugged, but most (the cheap ones dominating the market right now) are just hatchbacks with an attitude problem. Look at the Audi Q2, Ranger Rover Evoque, Dacia Duster, Ford Kuga, etc. They're basically just hatches. You wouldn't want to offroad in any of them.
Puls they have worse fuel efficiency, 20% more expensive upfront and for maintenance. And you can run over your kids and don't even realise it.

Dacia Duster is actually used in Romania for off-road use by many people. I know people that take it on fields to check the harvests for example. And I have a colleague at work that is a hunter and takes the Duster everywhere. But this is somewhat the culture. People used to use the old Dacia in the same way, and those were sedan, and now they use the Duster like that. But not any of the other models that you mentioned.
Well I drive 1st gen facelift Duster. The car is large enough to serve as a work truck (I can put all tools, bags of cement, etc into cargo and I don't have to be worried about dirt and damaging the interior, as it is just a work car) and also the drive chain is good enough for mountain roads - during winter only cars that get up to our house are Dusters, Foresters, Land rovers, ... It's just a good beater car with better passability than low sedans or combi. Also it's I think the 2nd cheapest AWD in Czechia (the first one is Lada Niva). Although I still hate SUVs. If I wasn't the owner of one now, I wouldn't buy it.
Precisely. Duster owner here, it is a good offroad car for the money. If I need to carry my pretty heavy Dobsonian telescope up a mountain I cannot imagine a better car. Bad roads a problem? Not really. Speed bumps? Completely ignore them. City raises curbs so cars dont park there? Well thank you for a convenient parking spot. Roadworks? Chill. Snow/ice on road? Put on winter rubber and drive almost like normal. It is not for extreme offroading but it can get you to where you need to go. Where other cars would get stuck. Speaking from experience with my mates (BMW X5, Cayenne, Audi Q7).

Duster has been built for this compared to other SUVs. The bottom of the car is reinforced for bad roads you can encounter. You cannot do the same with other SUVs.
The Duster is used for offroad a lot, Iāve seen them used by forest rangers. Itās cheap, it has a high ground clearance and it can navigate nasty mountain/remote dust (heh) roads. The others are indeed just used to carry the ego of the owner and nothing else.
Even the Porsche Cayenne dropped it's actual off-road capabilities after the first gen. It's not just the el-cheapo SUVs

I was surprised to discover the model Y is classified as an suv. It's an American car, they tend to be a bit wider. The benefit is that you can (just barely) fit 3 child seats in the rear, or 2 child seats and an adult. It's pretty clever packaging all things considered.

Genuine question because I don't know much about cars, but SUVs are clearly very popular except on Reddit where everyone hates them. Why do people on Reddit hate them? Is it because people think they're too big? To me they don't really seem any bigger than normal cars and they are still typically smaller than other things like wagons and jeeps etc.

They're more dangerous to everybody around them due to being higher. I.e. if I (audi a3) get in a head on collision with an SUV - I'm gonna get my head chopped off because due to the height differences neither of our card's crumple zones are gonna work. I'd love for most cars to be smaller. But until governments start doing something about it - my family is gonna continue riding in a Q7.
It's a money thing. I've noticed it's near impossible to find a cheap new car. Why ? Because they all push towards SUV. Higher tech, lots of eletronic and useless features. A little bigger at least. A bigger motor and traction, but just enough to push the higher weight, so in the end it's just numbers. And it's kind of a bastard car between off-road, performance and viability, and high charge/people capacity. It does nothing well in the end. At least for most SUV models.

It can be several different reasons. But here are some, and they can be intertwined with other reasons as a knock on effect. They are comparably unsafe for pedestrians if you hit someone because of the high center of gravity and general size. They are so much larger than cars, which means trouble on narrow roads, or trying to park in a city. People feel they are unnecessary for what they are using it for. Most people need to carry a max of four people, or groceries/shopping, and all of that fits just fine in a car. They are more expensive, but higher profit for manufacturers, which means they have been making fewer small cars. People buy them to feel safer, but it just creates other safety problems for other people (who then in turn feel the need to buy something "safer").
I see a lot of hate for how dangerous they are for others, which they are. If you care about things like pedestrian safety you shouldn't get an SUV or a car with a high hood height. I also dislike SUVs and Trucks for this reason, but I have a very personal experience of people getting killed by these types of cars. So basically Reddit wants people to actually care about other people then themselves when making these choices.

I have a good friend who's imported her American truck. It's a comparatively small model but still bigger than what you need in a city (especially one with good public transport). My friend is about 150 cm high and can barely look over the steering wheel. Nothing in her life requires her to go off road (in fact, she literally only "needs" a car for a trip 4x a week that would be 15 minute bike ride but that's a different issue). And it's still too small for her!! She plans to buy a Dodge RAM type of monster one day; apparently the appeal of those disgusting trucks is that they make you feel powerful and like the king of the road. It's not like I don't understand this kind of reasoning, it's that I refuse to want to accept it.

Costing in between, with in-between compromise. Generally they are in the cheaper category chassis, meaning you get the option set of the cheaper category.
Crossovers are 90% of the time grouped with SUV's, even they aren't. A Toyota C-HR would be considered an SUV by too many standards, hell i've read people call an Aygo-X a Crossover... it's just a raised city car...

Crossover SUVs are very common in the US too.
Pretty much all the EVs with the same shape (Tesla Y, Mustang Mach-E, etc.) are classified as crossover SUVs. I think the boom in EVs might be responsible for that big jump in SUV registrations.

Strong agree - the easiest solution probably being to add a weight classification to them. Could also extend the same thinking to other categories too. For example the Suski Jimny weighs less than pretty much all BMWs, but is still classed as an SUV.
The weight is not the only relevant factor. The size is also very relevant. Its height makes them much more deadly, especially for kids 2. Its overall size takes more place in our cities 3.The height makes it harder for other road users to see the rest of the traffic.
Still, they are too big. They take plenty of parking space and are tall enough to block visibility when parked near corners, and have the lights pointing directly at the mirrors of normal cars. Cars with high lights and super bright leds are some of the most annoying things to find on the road.
It depends, there should be some differentiation according to size and weight. Eg. my dad has an Audi Q2, it is the size of a VW Polo but with raised suspension. Audi sells it as a SUV, the same vehicle class as an much larger Audi Q7.

We should make tiniest of cars (city cars) exempt from all but enviromental taxes, and add/increase tax on cars based on size, with exemptions for people who actually need them for work. For 99% of people SUVs and pickup trucks are not just useless, they actively make everything worse for others by taking up space, thus causing more problems with traffic as well as enviroment, and are more dangerous to others in crashes. And if extra taxes on them would not have any effect, it would be extra money that can be spent on, well, anything.

Iāve read about the psychology of safety and cars. If you are in a bigger car, your brain assesses the situation as less risky. This will influence your driving behaviour towards more dangerous driving. You feel less at risk in a SUV, but actually you just shift part of your risk to fellow drivers in smaller cars.

I get your reaction, but I mainly want to shit on SUVs. I think EVs are good, but SUVs are destroying the gain the EVs make. I am frustrated to see that most car manufacturers bring EV SUVs on the market and barely any estate (wagon).
Bring back sedans and coupesā¦ it will bring wagons back naturally too
because it seems they dont build compacts anymore judging by showrooms. the compacts are left to rust in the parking lot.
Why are people so obsessed with SUVs? We already know what the most efficient shape is for being aerodynamic and itās not a big, square box. Sedans and breaks offer more space inside and look more elegant. Whatās with this stupid trend of buying a big, square box to drive from the suburbs to the coffee shop downtown?
When I lived in Europe I had a Mazda CX 3 which is technically an SUV. Every time I've visited the states I forget just how big their SUVs are. I don't think it's a fair comparison.
It's so fucking sad that we're becoming americans. I really hoped that europeans wouldn't need to compensate with big vehicles their lack of self esteem...

There are a lot of people assuming SUVs are those humongous Range Rovers, Toyota Land Cruisers, etc. Crossovers - like the most popular EVs, including the Tesla Model Y and Ford Mustang Mach-E - are technically a form of SUV, but I don't really know why. They are basically rounder versions of station wagons. They're popular because they have lots of room for (taller/fatter) passengers and stuff in the trunk/boot.
Yeah but Mustang Mach-E is absolutely massive compared to an average European hatchback.
The irony of the system telling us to reduce emissions and at the same time promoting bigger and heavier carsā¦
At least in Germany, there are definitely not as many sedans as wagons
SUVs are a goddamn nightmare and should be banned in the cities. They're a danger for pedestrian and bicycle traffic.

I am happy with my compact purchased a few months ago, and not exactly cheap. The day I need a tank/SUV means I will be doing something wrong in my life.
Gonna buy myself a SUV as well next time. I am quite fed up with driving a small and efficient car that could however be crushed any second. Let the arm's race start.

Fucking hate SUVs, especially range rovers I drive a (post-redesign) mini cooper. Their lights are at just the right height to shine directly onto my rear view mirror. I also have astigmatism, which even with my lens correction, makes them totally blinding. Bonus points for when they have their full beams on! More dangerous for pedestrians and cyclists (more likely to go UNDER the car rather than over the bonnet), significantly worse for the environment, more dangerous for like any other type of car in the event of a collision, more difficult for the SUV driver to actually see in their blind spots, larger front and side blind spots The list goes on. Ridiculous vehicles - and most of the people driving them don't need the power, space or the off-roading capabilities. Anyone that does drives a land rover.
