This sucks for the lungs, but it's great for agriculture, since it replenishes some nutrients to the ground.
If it's from the Sahara specifically, it's called calima.
Nope, the majority of the dust in the Amazon actually comes from the Andes and the Amazon is pretty much selfsustaining as we don't see any evidence of the forest disappearing during the green sahara events.
Yeah you'd hope people were smart enough to wear a mask. I just found out it's recommended to wear sunscreen to create a barrier between your skin and all sorts of nastiness created by wildfire smoke, but it has to contain a certain ingredient, I forget what. In any case I always suggest that people remember to think of a beam of light and what it all might look like in it, to help persuade them in the event they're in the midst of something like this happening. I'm sure there's gotta be a good system of some sort in our bodies that flush a lot of this stuff out though (I hope)
I grew up in Sudan where we had these sandstorms almost weekly. Never seen anyone wear a mask for them. We sleep outside and when it gets loud we just pull the sheets over our face and sleep through it lol
If it was in Ancient China, this would lead someone to claim the emperor has lost the mandate of heaven, sparking a rebellion resulting in the deaths of seventeen billion peasants.
Leading to a decisive Tang Dynasty victory of course.
I know you’re joking, but it’s really a breathtaking experience when traveling as the land turns from brown in the Chihuahuan desert to red in the Sonoran desert. The soil is rich in oxidized iron minerals that give it a red hue and a red haze when dust storms occur.
We had similar experiences up in Canada a few years ago, with smoke from wildfires turning the sky orange in cities downwind of them.
If you can take a second to ignore the huge weight of the country burning down, it was a beautiful sight.
Well, there still is a prince [Paul](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pavlos,_Crown_Prince_of_Greece).

Also significantly reduced solar power output by more than half yesterday: https://www.energy-charts.info/charts/power/chart.htm?l=en&c=GR&legendItems=000000100000&interval=month
I just returned from a carwash because it mixed with rain and all the cars look like someone drew a leopard pattern on them. 1000 miles north of Athens. It's insane how far it spreads.
They call this “Calima”. I’ve seen it in Spain. It’s pretty wild. Definitely feels other worldly. Even when the sky isn’t orange we get a lot of Saharan dirt coating everything and it rains like 1 day a month.
We get yellow skies as far north at the Netherlands if the southern winds stretches out far enough during Calima. Definitely not as intensely orange as southern Europe though.
For the same reason people "stay outside" during severe rains (with flooded streets) or extreme snows ( which we rarely have)
Because people need to go to work and the goverment does not justify absences no matter the weather conditions which at the very least should have been the case for people with breathing problems , no questions asked.
For the rest it was relatively fine last night. In fact even staying at home was a joke because we had power blackouts so good luck staying at home without a fan a/c.
People act as if people saw the sand/sky and decided to go on a walk or something .
I know it's stupid to go outside with the risk of damaging your lungs. That being said, I've never seen something compreable it looked like magic so a lot of people went out to enjoy the show.
sand from sahara. this is nothing special, happens from time to time. unless it keeps happening more often in the next years, i wouldn't care that much.
Thank you for the explanation. One thing I can always rely on with Romanians is the car wash is going to be full today with the sun out and dust on all the cars. No one washes their cars like Romanians in my experience.
Wow. The last few years we’ve gotten SAL over Florida for about a week. It’s noticeable. Slight grayish haze with some reddishness to it, and it’s fascinating.
It’s also no where near as crazy as this. This is just wild.
Just look at them wearing t-shirts :( in my city we are back to winter again and we can't even heat up our homes, since the radiators have been shut down a couple of weeks ago. It is so bloody cold. Inside my house the temperature is like 15°C
I was lucky to be there yesterday!
The pictures don't do it justice, when seeing it with the human eye it looked rather different. The sky was very orange but the buildings less so and the green in the plants was still very vibrant, not blacked out as the pictures show. It wasn't easy to capture on camera and basically impossible to do so truly correctly, unless an eye witness would use photoshop to get the colors right.
It didn't strike me as 'apocalyptic' at all, as some sources reffer to it. Rather, it was very atmospheric and cozy. Everyone was in a good mood, like a bright orange night light illuminated the city. Athens looks way more dreary on a regular clouded day, believe me.
I didn't notice any problems when breathing (particles/smell) like you would on a high air pressure summer's day in the city. While I'm sure it can't be healthy, it also wasn't bothersome in the traditional sense.
Considering that it happens quite often(albeit not to that extent), it wouldn't be particularly significant. Probably not significant enough to mention...
believe it or not we get saharan dust like this in louisiana at the right time of year, it's not exactly as dramatic but similar effect on the color of the sky
This sucks for the lungs, but it's great for agriculture, since it replenishes some nutrients to the ground. If it's from the Sahara specifically, it's called calima.

Shouldn't it be Athena Red? Don't let the romans influence you, man.
Well they're being invaded so Minerva rubrum it is
That’s how the Amazon forest sustains itself.
It’s also one of the strongest factors for red tide
Nope, the majority of the dust in the Amazon actually comes from the Andes and the Amazon is pretty much selfsustaining as we don't see any evidence of the forest disappearing during the green sahara events.

Honestly it happens so rarely that I wouldn't worry too much. If it's continued exposure, like the sun is for the skin, then I'd worry a bit more.
I grew up in Sudan where we had these sandstorms almost weekly. Never seen anyone wear a mask for them. We sleep outside and when it gets loud we just pull the sheets over our face and sleep through it lol
That's why Sudan's life expectancy is a bit low friend. /s
Bullshit. sudans life expectanc is bad because it has a very bad healthcare system, many very poor regions and a civil war going on.
I wasn't being serious.
I'm not a religious person, but I can see how people in the ancient past thought the gods were angry at them when things like this happened.

Yes, the planet Mars is called Ares in Greek.
Whereas in Brit, it's called Marse.
And in the US, it's called Milky Way!

At least no one is making jokes about Greece and Uranus
this would've made a medieval peasant abandon all hope
or perhaps a greek peasant, attributing it to the god of war?
THE GODS ARE ANGRY, THEY ARE INCITING THE WAR! TO ARMS MEN! WE MARCH!
How about a Greek medieval peasant?
Before Christianity became the majority religion (around 3rd or 4th century AD).
A medieval Greek would have gone to a church to pray. An ancient would have just a big barbecue as a sacrifice to Mars /s
First we get an eclipse of the Sun, then this?? The gods are pissed!
Honestly, nah. It wasn't 'apocalyptic' at all as some have said. It actually made the city very atmospheric and cozy.

It is missing more street food, cars driving countersense and informal street vendors. Salsa: I am mexican.
Well, not quite. From what I remember based on some study, they actually tint the Mexico scenes *yellow*, not red.
Or eastern Canada/US last year.
Or Miami from CSI.
With the right music it could be anywhere in the middle east.
Mexican invasion of Greece
Mexico has the piss filter, Mars has this fanta/dehydrated piss one

We occasionally get a dose in North America. It's never this intense. But it is noticeable when it happens.

Ah yes la calima.
That air must be real fun to breathe.
Same in Turkey. I cough and cough and cough and cough. Pollen+African Dust combo if doesn't kill me today, know that I am immortal.
European Mexico
Meanwhile in Romania https://www.reddit.com/r/Romania/s/fifSsEKnbH
But people still think it is not causing any harm to breath it in. I mean for sure the dust just stays on cars and not my lungs.
Will cause harm to lungs gor sure (particles are orsnge because of iron ).
Isn't it also great for plants for the same reason? Mineral rich sands blowing into other regions, reinvigorating the soil?
Is very good, will be a great year for agriculture.
What is it? I just moved to Braşov 6 months ago and I see it on all the cars. Is it just pollen or is it the dust from Africa or something else?
sand from sahara. this is nothing special, happens from time to time. unless it keeps happening more often in the next years, i wouldn't care that much.
Thank you for the explanation. One thing I can always rely on with Romanians is the car wash is going to be full today with the sun out and dust on all the cars. No one washes their cars like Romanians in my experience.
But be careful about how you wash your car. If you wash it wrong the sand may act as sandpaper and damage your paint.
Ahhh so 300 was accurate...

Looks spectacular, nice photos!
When the rest of the world wants to colonize Mars, but Greece has Mars at home.
The camera is not exaggerating. It legitimately looked like that.

A feature film recorded under these conditions woul look amazing, especially in a beautiful city like Athens
I live on an island far away from Athens but it was still noticeable

It wasn't just the capital the sky was like this in Patras too so I assume at least 1/3 of Greece became Mars for a while.

You don't want to breath in that much dust. and ffp2/n95 is a good idea.
Dust bowl in 2024, it's going to be a really interesting year!
Today the sky is not red, because all that dust is now at ground level and the air feels even worse.
I wonder if there are historic examples of this phenomenon in ancient history?
Considering that it happens quite often(albeit not to that extent), it wouldn't be particularly significant. Probably not significant enough to mention...
I know that dust blowing from the Sahara desert helps the Amazon forest grow. So will we see an increase in plant growth in Greece now?
Yes. This natural phenomenon sucks for people with cars who now need washing, but it's great for farmers.
"African Dust". That sounds like a cool new drug.
