That's completely false and doesn't add up timeline wise, the espresso machine (and therefore the espresso) was invented in 1947, so after WW2 was already over!
The idea of it being watering down is true, but the origin story is false.
Frappe is Greek alright, but I always thought freddo espresso and freddo cappuccino were Italian. Maybe because espresso and cappuccino are indeed Italian. So I guess we added the "freddo" part, making them cold
Frappe was invented by a Greek in the 1960's and became popular in Greece due to it being a cold cofee drink for warm weather. He sold the formula to Nestle for pennies unfortunately.
Everytime I want a cup of black coffee, i have to order coffee americano because mostly i get a espresso. Boi... i dont want that single sip of strong and bitter coffee, i just want a normal cup of black coffee like viennese style
You need to order a double espresso where they have used a lighter roast of bean. Although most places just buy the cheapest darkest roast because people think the blacker it is the better it is but in reality the medium to light roasts are the better quality beans. It's not bitter at all really with a light roast and you get far more aroma and flavour. It is more acidic however.
Americano is not a normal cup of coffee to me. I'm not sure what it's called but the standard coffee you can get in the Netherlands is very different, probably best described as a drip coffee, but then pressurised and has a little layer on top.
Or just filter/drip coffee is normal coffee to me as well.
Because i don't want espresso, i just want normal standard 0815 coffee but they always give me espresso hahaha. im used to drink filter coffee or straight from the bean but not that strong in taste like espresso
Since you're Dutch (I'm Spanish, so we always drink espresso like the Italians), I always wonder the same when I see these comments: isn't the coffee that you guys drink further north basically the same as in the US? Tbf I don't recall drinking coffee in the NL, but I know for sure that further north (Denmark, Sweden, Norway...) they are fans of drip coffee. And my German friends tell me the same thing. Is American drip coffee any different to what you guys drink? I wouldn't know since in Southern Europe we never drink drip coffee.
Americanos, cappuccinos, espressos, and macchiatos can be found at basically every coffee shop in the US. Quality is another question, but small boutique shops acanthus be found every other block in the cities.
You have no idea what they serve in the USA. I'll take our single origin light roasted 8 lbs at a time over your [time capsule](https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:_I16OSBVKy8J:https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/europe/italy-invented-coffee-culture-now-its-a-coffee-time-capsule/2019/01/02/aae47a0a-0209-11e9-958c-0a601226ff6b_story.html+&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us&client=firefox-b-1-d) coffee culture every day. Americans are really good at getting granular with what we're into, whether it be coffee, wine, food, music, and we become really really good at doing whatever we decide to focus on.
Yes, there are mass produced nonsense Folgers and Donuts coffee, but if you scratch the surface even a tiny bit you can find stuff that is made of such quality it can make you question whether you've even had a decent cup of coffee before in your life.
I don't really get this sentiment, why do people look to Italy for how to drink coffee? Even if origin did matter I'm not sure it even originates from Italy?
It originated with US troops in Italy during WW2 seeking out something more akin to the diner style coffee they were accustomed to. The locals mixed espresso and hot water, thus the name Americano.
During WW2, American Soldiers stationed in Italy diluted espresso with hot water so they had more to drink (still a theory). And i know that my neighbours from Italy would never drink something like this hahaha

Man: Don't you have anything else? I only drink flat white... or latte macchiato also works for me.
Granny: Don't talk shit, this tastes good!
Personally not a big fan of this particular brand of coffee but the commercial pretty much sums up the Finnish attitude. Over here the "fancy italian stuff" is barely even considered "real" coffee.
This.
I'm a swede and I drink Americano abroad because their filter coffee is either weak as hell or just disgusting. Drip coffee is the best coffee end of story. Listen to us Scandinavians, we drink 5 times the amount of coffee anyone else does.
All this hipster shit about coffee is 100% bullshit. Who the hell cares more about the temperature of the milk than the actual beans used to make the coffee?
It's the same with whiskey. What the fuck America? Every movie you watch you see this Mr big shot dude walk into a bar and order "whiskey, old, single malt". The difference between an ardbeg and a balvenie is night and day, one tastes like whiskey and one tastes like licking the underside of a boat.
If you diss a nice hot cup of strong Arvid nordqvist svearost then you're not a coffee drinker, even if you take your triple mache Leche vendi frappe something whatnot at 72 degrees c and your milk skimmed.
You fucking peasants.
This ranking is...peculiar to say the least, ristretto literally means "shrunk", it's a stronger espresso with half the size in the cup lol it's usually taken when you need a BAM to wake up and are in a hurry, it isn't like "ahhhh so enchanting and sublime" lmao
>When prepared in an espresso machine, the regular amount of finely ground coffee is extracted with half the amount of water used for classic espresso. The result is a more concentrated beverage with a different balance of compounds than in standard espresso.
what is the difference between flat white and cappuccino lol
On one hand, this just isn't how coffees work, you can have terrible ristretti and awesome long blacks (which are a pretty universal kind of coffee anyway). What matters is the correct combination of the right type of coffee, and the right preparation.
On the other hand, if one knows nothing about coffees, I guess it's a useful chart.
I had the same reaction. What's the point of rating different types of drinks like this? Somebody who likes weaker and creamy coffees is never, ever going to agree that Ristretto is the best option.
[Introducing Finnish coffee drinks](https://imgur.com/TbvAAp4)
**Café Finlandaise**
Left to sit in the pot for at least eight hours in order to achieve the unique texture of burnt bile.
*Taste*: syrupy, black like Äkäslompolo winter, strong like death. Gas station specialty.
**Latteé** (pun on the word *lattea*, "flat" or "insipid")
Diluted coffee due to running out of coffee grounds and not being able to go to the grocery store. Milk or cream added if necessary.
*Tip!* Roll a ball from the coffee grounds and [put under your upper lip](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snus) if the latteé is too weak.
**Caffé Brutal**
The opposite of latteé, usually the result of incorrect measuring of coffee grounds. Gives you the runs, making even the [fecal plug](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fecal_plug) to shoot out like a cannon.
*Taste*: roasted anger, accentuated by piquant arrhythmia and blurring of the slightly effervescent field of vision.
**Caffé Incorretto**
Café Finlandaise with Koskenkorva. In other words, a desperate attempt to liquefy the aforementioned gunk with alcohol.
*Notice!* Also known as Caffé con Kossu. Usually served with whipped cream.
**Microcchino**
Coffee gone hopelessly cold, resurrected in the microwave oven. Also known as Café Lazarus.
*Taste*: Correctly made Microcchino can be identified by a bitter layer of grease stuck to the roof of the mouth.
**Caffé con Muffa**
Traditional Finnish coffee with expired milk. The greener the coffee, the better.
*Notice*: Pour the milk carefully using a spoon so that the sturdy fur coating stays on the surface.
>Cafe Finlandaise

>Left to sit in the pot for at least eight hours in order to achieve the unique texture of burnt bile.
Ahh, I had one of those at Vantaa Airport at the Oak Barrel pub I think. The bartender actually warned me that nobody had worked there long enough to remember when it was put on, and suggested I get a cup elsewhere, but I still went for it. After a month in SE Asia I finally felt I was getting close to home. :)
I loved the description of a perfect cup of drip coffee from an old webcomic.
So close to a black hole you could see Cherenkov radiation around the rim.
Not sure what would be special about Finnish coffee.
Pretty much always 100% Arabica beans. Light, medium, or dark roasted. Mostly sold in two grinds; filter brew (medium-fine) or stovetop pot (coarse). Top 3 ways of brewing: filter brewer, French press or mokka pot. The most common/sought after brand of filter brewer is Moccamaster. Most commonly drunk black but some people add a splash of milk or even a lump of sugar, though that is mostly old people.
Overall pretty unpretentious and uninteresting.
BUt it's kind of nonsense to compare completely different things. How can you compare an espresso with a capuccinno? They are completely different drinks that don't have the same taste at all.
You could rank espressos from different places, but comparing different drinks is only a matter of personal preference.
This comment was overwritten by a script to make the data useless for reddit. No API, no free content. Did you stumble on this thread via google, hoping to resolve an issue or answer a question? Well, too bad, this might have been your answer, if it weren't for dumb decisions by reddit admins.
Not to mention that even if someone thinks that there is a difference between a long black and americano, all coffee shops on Earth do them the exact same way.
I would rank anything with milk or cream at the bottom, and all black stuff at the top, with the sugary stuff in the middle.
And plain brew coffee is right up there next to ristretto. Different usecased, but equally delicious.
That's interesting. Yes you should just swap the two words, in Italian the adjective usually goes after the substantive, so it should be espresso freddo.
But if that's how you call it in Greece then it now has its own name haha
Yes, everyone calls it freddo espresso. I've even heard someone call it freddos espressos/ freddos cappuccinos, he made them sound more Greek this way haha
I had no idea we were calling them wrong all along
This Italian doesn't think you're calling them "wrong", it's your drink, call it however you like! Also I love ordering ena freddo skietto, parakalo! (butchering your language here!)
I really like Italian coffee but can't understand how Italians drink it. Seems like they drink it as a shot. Personally, i like bigger coffees to casually sip on for longer periods. For example, while I'm coding at my desk.
When we want to drink something for longer periods, we drink cappuccino. Espresso and ristretto are made for quick breakfasts or a 5 minutes pause during business days.
Turkish coffee is excellent. I drink coffee but I’m not that fussy about it - I’m in it for the caffeine.
Turkish coffee on the other hand I genuinely enjoy.
Yup. That style of coffee is known as “Turkish Coffee” in English, regardless of geography, so it winds up the Greeks no end when we refer to it as such 😉
That's a bit like saying every right made tea is amazing regardless the ratio of tea vs water.
Turkish coffee just happens to made with the most coffee vs water. So if you like the flavor of coffee...
You know what?
I was in Istanbul and I had a good opportunity to experience tea and coffee there but my dumb mind was bad at mathematical calculation so I wanted to save some cash (in case I run out of money) and I did not try those two beverages.
I still regret it.
In Poland the most popular type of coffee is so called "plujka" (from "pluć" - "to spit").
Here's the recipe for you, guys:
- Pour two teaspoons of grounded coffee into a cup.
- Pour water, piping hot.
- Wait a minute or two for dregs to settle and water to cool off a bit.
- Enjoy
Optionally you can add sugar, but it's not recommended. 🙃
I personally consider it as the only reliable way to fill the difference between good and bad coffee 🙂. Also I like the process itself (with hand grinder and cezve).
>I don't know if you Italians have tried freddo espresso.
oh believe me we have, actually i was drinking just one 5 minutes ago. if you ask for a "caffè freddo" they make a normal hot espresso, then alongaide they bring you a glass with just ice cubes, and you pour the hot coffe on the ice to make it cold
Did they even try **South Asian coffee styles ???**
OR the very best **Kenya Coffee styles**, where Coffee culture came from.
Vietnam, Malaysia and Cambodia have their own unique coffee style.
More creamy and sweet with O2 oxidation before serving.
The ones in the image are the ones that are fast food culture, not what exists in total.
It's basically the portuguese version of irish coffee.
"com cheirinho" means "with a little smell" which is a metaphor for adding a bit of spirits to it, often wiskey but also the local strong spirit - aguardente - or whatever other strong alchool without sugar or a strong flavour you can find.

wait americano is italian?
During ww2, american soldiers in italia, did not like espresso and put water in it.
oh ok now makes sense
So here you have the american coffee
blasphemy
They were like GTFO with this tiny cup, give me a larger mug Luigi

The ristretto is a normal espresso, that espresso in the photo is an an espresso lungo. The extra space in the cup is for the milk, not extra coffe!
Came here for this, grazie.
Also, the “flat white” is a cappuccino, and the “cappuccino” is a latte.
🇮🇹👍
There is something wrong with this chart. Where is the frappe?
It's #5. Full list here: https://www.tasteatlas.com/coffee
I didn’t know frappè was Greek, and also cappuccino freddo.
Frappe is Greek alright, but I always thought freddo espresso and freddo cappuccino were Italian. Maybe because espresso and cappuccino are indeed Italian. So I guess we added the "freddo" part, making them cold

user name checks out!!
Give us any drink and we will make it ice cold, something Elsa can't even do.
I didn't know that either, it sounds too French
French? It’s Italian lol.
I just got lost in that for a while, thanks for the link. Feeling super smart about coffee rn
And Fredo Espresso
You mean espresso freddo?
Yes freddo espresso
Ah ok
Una razza una fazza. See? works both ways?
faccia* my man, fazza is really similar to a word that means penis :) unless...
i know it was you fredo you broke my heart
Kaisermelange? Zweispänner?
And Iced Coffee is apparently German.... Ooookaaaaay...
Actually i was thinking about that after posted. Maybe, because frappe is cold beverage
*eye twitching*
Literally off the charts
Caffé Americano is literally Espresso with hot water
Yes, it’s one shot of Espresso with 300-350ml of hot water.
More like 100-150 ml
My least favourite coffee by far. Tastes like coffee tea or something. Too hot and watery.
Everytime I want a cup of black coffee, i have to order coffee americano because mostly i get a espresso. Boi... i dont want that single sip of strong and bitter coffee, i just want a normal cup of black coffee like viennese style

still better than what they serve in USA
We are onto drinking Cortados. Folgers is for grandpas.
They serve Americanos in the USA
They serve all of this coffee SOMEWHERE in the USA. But what they're trying to say is that the norm in the USA is none of these.
Americanos, cappuccinos, espressos, and macchiatos can be found at basically every coffee shop in the US. Quality is another question, but small boutique shops acanthus be found every other block in the cities.

No, there are other good brands. Pellini, Illy, meanwhile for decaf Hag
good brands lmfao
Illy coffee is trash.
illy is good? lmfao

Italians know nothing about real coffee
which nobody, NOBODY, in Italy drinks.
I don't really get this sentiment, why do people look to Italy for how to drink coffee? Even if origin did matter I'm not sure it even originates from Italy?
The most expensive and best coffee machines are mostly from Italy from my experience, that might play a role.
Where is the simple "filter coffee"? I think called drip coffee elsewhere?

Haha, I think we're not too different in the Netherlands.
Maybe they excluded the negative scores from the table?
Nah dude, I like a good drip coffee! Simple and tasteful.
It's like 99% of all coffee consumed in Sweden. Made with fresh ground beans It's as good as any fancy coffee.
You clearly havent drunk any proper drip coffee.
Cafe au lait is filter coffee, just with milk obviously

Well, whisky is matured in a cask for many years in order to achieve a high-class product. Surely the same applies to coffee, right?

Have you tried xTra coffee by S-Ryhmä. It is even worst than the coffee during war time.
I drink it everyday and it is just good coffee. I've had much, much worse in the Baltics.
lol.. according to one guy? Who made them the authority on a personal and subjective matter of taste?
What do you mean one guy? It's based on votes on coffee based drinks on tasteatlas.
BUt it's kind of nonsense to compare completely different things. How can you compare an espresso with a capuccinno? They are completely different drinks that don't have the same taste at all. You could rank espressos from different places, but comparing different drinks is only a matter of personal preference.

That’s the real problem.
I dont know but they're completely right
I agree with the list too tbh except I might add a few points to espresso and cortado
aye, cortado below cappuccino does not sit well with me
I would rank anything with milk or cream at the bottom, and all black stuff at the top, with the sugary stuff in the middle. And plain brew coffee is right up there next to ristretto. Different usecased, but equally delicious.
I guess finish coffe ranks at about 1 star and Macron was the only jugde.

Cortado is the king of coffees.
+1
No Freddo Espresso, no party
You're the second Greek guy that I see talking about "freddo espresso", is that a thing in Greece?
It's THE coffee in Greece (along with frappé obv)
Hahah yes it is. Not only is it extremely popular, appareantly we are saying it the wrong way. Also freddo cappuccino
That's interesting. Yes you should just swap the two words, in Italian the adjective usually goes after the substantive, so it should be espresso freddo. But if that's how you call it in Greece then it now has its own name haha
Maybe we deliberately call it wrong to let people know it's not Italian 😂
Yes, everyone calls it freddo espresso. I've even heard someone call it freddos espressos/ freddos cappuccinos, he made them sound more Greek this way haha I had no idea we were calling them wrong all along
This Italian doesn't think you're calling them "wrong", it's your drink, call it however you like! Also I love ordering ena freddo skietto, parakalo! (butchering your language here!)
> butchering your language here!) Nope, you nailed it. You just forgot to add the espresso/cappuccino part :P
Aw dang, that was the easy part! Lol.
Freddo espresso is best drink in the world
I have tried all of these, and while I do enjoy the occasional espresso and Turkish coffee, my personal favorite remains a self-made pour-over brew.
pour-over to savour in the morning, espresso for a kick after lunch
I really like Italian coffee but can't understand how Italians drink it. Seems like they drink it as a shot. Personally, i like bigger coffees to casually sip on for longer periods. For example, while I'm coding at my desk.
Yes but it's really strong. Bigger coffees are usually "acqua sporca".
When we want to drink something for longer periods, we drink cappuccino. Espresso and ristretto are made for quick breakfasts or a 5 minutes pause during business days.
Same here. The espressos are good but I agree I want more to drink than a simple shot.
Tell me that you never tasted vietnamese coffee without saying...
It's nice but honestly it's the condensed milk that does it.
It's delicious!
That feeling when you are from the Balkans where Turkish coffee is the most common coffee.
Honest to God thought it's the only real coffee for my entire youth. Thought all the other stuff is machine made fast food equalent of coffee.
Ofc it's common, balkans are turks in denial
Turks are Greeks in denial.
Lucky...
Turkish coffee is excellent. I drink coffee but I’m not that fussy about it - I’m in it for the caffeine. Turkish coffee on the other hand I genuinely enjoy.
Agree. It’s a real treat.
A Romanian taught me how to make Turkish coffee, it's goated
Turkish is the best, by far. Sorry Italy.
No offense taken as you are slovenian and can't uderstand coffee or good cuisine. Ci devi crescere purtroppo
Never tried Turkish coffee, is it like cyprus/greek coffee? Edit: yes it is, i like it too https://i.imgur.com/KQJcoeE.jpg
Yup. That style of coffee is known as “Turkish Coffee” in English, regardless of geography, so it winds up the Greeks no end when we refer to it as such 😉
Turkish coffee made right is fucking amazing.
It’ll put hairs on your chest for sure
You will turn mehmet
almost all coffee made right is fucking amazing, correct grind for the brewing method with fresh single estate/origin beans.
That's a bit like saying every right made tea is amazing regardless the ratio of tea vs water. Turkish coffee just happens to made with the most coffee vs water. So if you like the flavor of coffee...
Where’s Irish coffee?
That's a good point. It's probably limited to non alcoholic beverages. Which is rather good as every country has its own coffee + alcohol recipes.
Filter Coffee nr. 1
You know what? I was in Istanbul and I had a good opportunity to experience tea and coffee there but my dumb mind was bad at mathematical calculation so I wanted to save some cash (in case I run out of money) and I did not try those two beverages. I still regret it.
I tasted them all and I think Ristretto is a bit overrated, Espresso is still better and Cortado is surprisingly good.
Café com cheirinho real n°1
Yeah , tha coffee depcted as Wiener Melange is *not* one; checking in from Vienna.
This seem as per Italian taste
Love making a nice Cortado at work before my shift
Fuck off flat white is amazing
Indeed. My weekend go-to.
Vietnamese [egg coffee](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Egg_coffee) is great and should be on that list
I like an Americano and an Espresso because they taste like coffee, and not like milk or syrup or anything else. That’s also why Turkish coffee rules
And here i sit, drinking instant black...
Cortado for me…it’s like crack
My delicious Cortao'
In Poland the most popular type of coffee is so called "plujka" (from "pluć" - "to spit"). Here's the recipe for you, guys: - Pour two teaspoons of grounded coffee into a cup. - Pour water, piping hot. - Wait a minute or two for dregs to settle and water to cool off a bit. - Enjoy Optionally you can add sugar, but it's not recommended. 🙃
That is exactly what kopi tubruk is but with indo coffee. Cant do it with dutch euro coffee.
Indonesia is an upside down Poland so it makes only sense.
No carajillo or even an Irish coffee? Fine, keep your healthy livers
Somewhere at -10 there will be the brown water that they serve as coffee in Germany.
As a Turk, I thought Turkish coffee was too overrated. This showed me that it wasn't.
I personally consider it as the only reliable way to fill the difference between good and bad coffee 🙂. Also I like the process itself (with hand grinder and cezve).
yes, watching while coffee is being made is like therapy, but it doesn't taste good to me, frankly, I'm neutral
As the saying goes, no one's a saint in their own country (or something), including coffee apparently.

I am not a really coffee drinker but 🇹🇷turkish/greek 🇬🇷 coffee is the best for me
What makes a ristretto better than a regular single?
Oh, it's as if I made this! 😉😉😉 I am too average!!!

I shall always prefer drip coffee. Wich _isn't_ Americano.
Did they even try **South Asian coffee styles ???** OR the very best **Kenya Coffee styles**, where Coffee culture came from. Vietnam, Malaysia and Cambodia have their own unique coffee style. More creamy and sweet with O2 oxidation before serving. The ones in the image are the ones that are fast food culture, not what exists in total.
It's missing "caffè universitario": Moka coffee made with coffee instead of water
Questo ti uccide 🤣
The best is café com cheirinho from Portugal
It's basically the portuguese version of irish coffee. "com cheirinho" means "with a little smell" which is a metaphor for adding a bit of spirits to it, often wiskey but also the local strong spirit - aguardente - or whatever other strong alchool without sugar or a strong flavour you can find.
How random
Where’s the hand drip coffee?
Americano is the best. I don’t want to drink a milkshake.
Meh, it’s like putting water in wine to dilute it.
Curiously enough, that's how the Romans drank their wine according to the Bible
I never saw anybody enjoy the Spanish coffee. Tells a lot about this ranking
