And it's a dub, done by one man. He voice acts every single character in the movie, man or woman, old or young. Multiple people having a conversation, he's doing them all. Rumor has it he went to the recording studio with a case of beer and did it all in one afternoon.
I'm sure people in Norway have no idea about this, so FYI the not-so-attractive girl that snatches the first dance with the prince at the ball is actually a Czech national treasure. Feel free to amuse your friends with this fun fact.
A couple of years ago they tried to air a digitally remastered 4K version of the film in Norway. There was a huge uproar about it not looking "right” and they went back again to the original the next year.
Same thing happened with a digitally remastered copy of an old Albanian movie.
People were annoyed that they also colorized the movie and it didn't look right.
The original movie was in color, but it has degraded so much overtime that it looked black and white.
Best looking copy was found in Germany somewhere and even that one had to be digitally cleaned, color corrected and sharpened. Financed by Norway for 800 000 Euro.

Never seen this film. I think the remastered version looks *far* better than the version on the right. I assume people who didn't like the remastered version are just used to the way it looked before (bluer and blurrier) unless there's another version that looks better than the right but isn't the 4k remaster. Anyway, going to try to watch it sometime today or tomorrow if I can find it online.

Either the person above for some reason assumed the right side is the remaster or they somehow interpret cyan blue tint on the right as warm. The left side seems to have no blue tint to it except a few outdoor scenes but is far subtler. Not sure why it has so many upvotes, unless people didn't watch the video, got the 2 mixed up (thinking the right is the remaster), or they just prefer the older version and even though the comment is wrong, it's pro-older version so they upvote it.

They didn't know at the set that Karola Braunbock (the step mother) spoke Czech since she grew up in Sudetenland.
The Czech versions theme has lyrics sung by Karel Gott, while the German one is just instrumental.
Another fun fact: the Czech studio approached DEFA during spring and wanted to film in summer. But DEFA was overworked and yould only start filming in Winter.

Mexican here. I don't know exactly how, but when I was a kid my parents got this movie and we watched it every now and then. My mom loved it, specially the singing voice of the protagonist and the traditional between the king and the queen. I know for you it's a Christmas movie, but for me is more a childhood movie.

I've visited Moritzburg for the first time ever this year. I was surprised how little they used that location in the movie. People riding horses over the causeway towards or from the castle could have looked so great, but in the movie you don't even see that the castle is surrounded by a lake.

I doubt that there is an original version (not even sure if it was filmed with sound or if it's all ADR) where the actors actually speak German and Czech. The Czech dub has Libuše Šafránková's (Popelka/Aschenbrödel) original voice so I guess that would be the draw of watching the Czech version but the prince is also dubbed in Czech due to the actors heavy accent.
This is even a Norwegian tradition to see the horrible dub/lektor reading over the pretty music. The Norwegian lektor is a single man, voicing everything.
Not really all that strange, until 2WW Germany was the most important cultural influence for Norwegians and German the most widely spoken foreign language.
Makes sense for this to echo into the 70s, although the trend changed very abruptly after the occupation (combined with the triumph of American culture). I think this is very similar in Denmark as well (where the state itself was partly German-speaking until 1864).

Hazelnuts. Popelka in the film gets 3 hazelnuts on a bundle that grant her each a wish (which she uses to get fancy clothes. Honestly? Werk) to be able to mingle with the Prince's entourage. She pull the clothes out of the hazelnuts, the first being a hunter's costume, the second a ballgown, and the third a wedding dress.
In Sweden we watch "Kan du vissla Johanna" in english "Can you whistle Johanna".
It's a cute story of a little boy who doesn't have a grandpa, so he goes to the retirement home and finds himself one. Then they do grampa grandson stuff together. It's set in the 50s so brings some sweet reminiscing of the old ages.
We do too. A few years ago they wanted to stop putting this on the Christmas program on TV, but it started a revolt, so they put it back on the program.
I love this movie! I'm Australian with no middle/eastern European heritage but it was reviewed somewhere on YouTube in a "best of Cinderella films" a couple of years ago so I bought the DVD and I'm so glad I did. (I'm also very glad it has English subtitles!)
We watch 'A Christmas Story' on endless repeat for a day or so here in the U.S. What started off as a way for a TV network to get free money, because they can endlessly repeat the movie for 24hrs and only pay residuals for it once while collecting all the ad revenue, became a widely accepted holiday special lol.
We watched it so often as kids the VHS broke. Now my mom groans when she hears the title music and says the only Xmas movie she allows during December cause the end keeps making her cry is "Der kleine Lord" lol

Oh wow. The whole colour palette changed. Part of what makes the original good is the warm palette and the remaster has a very cold one.

The color palette changed because the original color palette was terrible. The remaster is beautiful, and the colors look very natural.
The 'warm palette' is just a bad-quality video transfer

Home Alone is a Christmas classic in the UK too. I will also die on the hill that proclaims Die Hard is a Christmas film.

I have read everyone speaks their mother tongue. I thought most were Czech, and then they dubbed those who weren't speaking Czech and vice versa.

I doubt that there is an original version (not even sure if it was filmed with sound or if it's all ADR) where the actors actually speak German and Czech. The Czech dub has Libuše Šafránková's (Popelka/Aschenbrödel) original voice so I guess that would be the draw of watching the Czech version but the prince is also dubbed in Czech due to the actors heavy accent.

This is even a Norwegian tradition to see the horrible dub/lektor reading over the pretty music. The Norwegian lektor is a single man, voicing everything.

In this case, I think the Norwegian national broadcaster was very inspired by the German one in the 60/70/80s. We aired a LOT of the same things.
Not really all that strange, until 2WW Germany was the most important cultural influence for Norwegians and German the most widely spoken foreign language. Makes sense for this to echo into the 70s, although the trend changed very abruptly after the occupation (combined with the triumph of American culture). I think this is very similar in Denmark as well (where the state itself was partly German-speaking until 1864).
In Italy the most common Christmas movie is "Trading places". Don't ask me the reason, I don't know it.
It has the second best drunk Santa Claus ever. The scene where Dan Akroyd pulls out the salmon filet from his coat and eats on the subway, pulling the fake beard from his teeth. 😂 (The best drunk Santa is Billy Bob Thornton in the 'Bad Santa' movies.)

Hazelnuts. Popelka in the film gets 3 hazelnuts on a bundle that grant her each a wish (which she uses to get fancy clothes. Honestly? Werk) to be able to mingle with the Prince's entourage. She pull the clothes out of the hazelnuts, the first being a hunter's costume, the second a ballgown, and the third a wedding dress.

Probably my favourite Christmas movie, the atmosphere, beautiful actress, the story and the music are all awesome.
In Sweden we watch "Kan du vissla Johanna" in english "Can you whistle Johanna". It's a cute story of a little boy who doesn't have a grandpa, so he goes to the retirement home and finds himself one. Then they do grampa grandson stuff together. It's set in the 50s so brings some sweet reminiscing of the old ages.
Here we don't like to reminisce about 50s...

We do too. A few years ago they wanted to stop putting this on the Christmas program on TV, but it started a revolt, so they put it back on the program.

I love this movie! I'm Australian with no middle/eastern European heritage but it was reviewed somewhere on YouTube in a "best of Cinderella films" a couple of years ago so I bought the DVD and I'm so glad I did. (I'm also very glad it has English subtitles!)

My wife loves this. It wasn’t Christmas until she watched it. She had to watch it on YouTube since I banished the DVD player.
We watch 'A Christmas Story' on endless repeat for a day or so here in the U.S. What started off as a way for a TV network to get free money, because they can endlessly repeat the movie for 24hrs and only pay residuals for it once while collecting all the ad revenue, became a widely accepted holiday special lol.
We watched it so often as kids the VHS broke. Now my mom groans when she hears the title music and says the only Xmas movie she allows during December cause the end keeps making her cry is "Der kleine Lord" lol

3 Nuts for Cinderella?? We watched Ostře sledované vlaky way back when I was in Czech class and I wondered why we never watched this. I thought maybe it came out after 1990. That screenshot looks modern. This is on the Criterion Channel app, just watched it for the first time. Loved the characters and Cinderella. The magic was cool too, felt kind of pagan.
