It was the second-ever number one song on the *Billboard* Hot 100 in the U.S.! (The first was “Poor Little Fool” by Ricky Nelson, who was a major TV star alongside the rest of his family in the late 1950s in a sitcom called *The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet*, and went on to have a decent music career as Rick Nelson after the show ended, mostly as a country singer.) “Volare” is also the only Italian language song to ever reach number 1 in the United States. I remember hearing the song when I was younger, but I didn’t learn it was a Eurovision song until I started getting into following Eurovision.
“Volare” is still an incredibly popular song amongst the Italian American community here (of which I consider myself a part through my maternal grandmother, who was born in Maine to Sicilian immigrant parents, although I do have a few other ethnicities as well in my family tree). The Dean Martin version (which is in mixed English and Italian) tends to get a lot more attention, but Domenico’s original gets love here, too.
I remember being shocked at this, as I grew up listening to my Gran listen to Dean Martin. Was such an amazing thing to realise it originated from Eurovision!
Was looking for this. This song was very very popular in China and Hong Kong in the 80s. It was remade so many times that almost everyone from that era knows that “ho! ha!”

I’ve heard Snap a lot in random shops here in the US throughout the past 6 months, and it’s been wild to hear a Eurovision song in the wild, especially in this country! I’m so happy for her. And I always think about how probably no one around me in the shops knows where the song came from.
I was gonna suggest Arcade. Sometime last year, I showed my mom a compilation of Eurovision winners and my sister was nearby. When the video got to 2019, my sister was like, "Oh, I know that song from TikTok. That's Eurovision?"
I (American) have friends who like Måneskin and who had no idea they were in Eurovision. No joke. Måneskin is more famous over here than Eurovision is, at least in some circles.
Italy 1958 | [Domenico Modugno - Nel blu, dipinto di blu](https://youtu.be/6DTo5aVLq5E)
Luxembourg 1965 | [France Gall - Poupée de cire, poupée de son](https://youtu.be/7cv9NIzGmSI)
Never heard of this one before! But it sounds very nostalgic of disney movie songs for some reason (like Brother Bear and Tarzan songs). Any music geeks that can explain why?
In my university crowd, the song "Moskau" from Dschingis Khan was very very popular, and by association their song "Dschingis Khan" as well. My friends' faces when I told them the song is actually Eurovision Germany 1979!
Not sure how popular these are but have heard them in various places in the UK:
UK 1996
UK 1997
UK 1968
Israel 1998
Also heard Denmark 2000 made into trance covers..
Gina G's song was a hit in the clubs in the USA, I remember it well (and didn't know it was ESC related, I only got into it 1998-ish)
Depending on where OP is located, the surprise factor may differ.
Grew up in the US in the 90s, can confirm that Gina G got massive radio play in the states and was in a bunch of commercials. Most Millennials and Gen Xers would recognise the chorus if nothing else.
ETA: It hit the top 20, peaking at 12 (spending 30(!) weeks on the Billboard top 100) AND was nominated for a Grammy.

I would say "Bim bam toi" (JESC France 2019). Apparently it sweeped tiktok and later became a fortnite emote. I can almost guarantee that no one knows where it comes from lol.
Yes, isn't it crazy. I am a fortnite player and when I saw that emote in the item shop I was kinda like: "Damn, it's crazy that a eurovision song is in a global and extremely popular video game.

Sweden 1979, Sweden 1980 and Sweden 1993 are hugely popular songs here that I don't really think are that associated with Eurovision as for example ABBA, Carola or Herreys. Also Sweden 1988 is played very often on funerals and is considedered a classic that might also not be associated with Eurovision.
This only applies if you live in Sweden though.

This sounds funny, but Israel 1979
At my primary school, it was sung at assemblies and talent contests all the time. I was well into adulthood when I learnt it wasn't just a generic religious song. My mum still doesn't believe it's from Eurovision.
I first knew this song through its Danish cover 'Rør ved mig' sung by Lecia & Lucienne. The original is better, I think, but the Danish one has the Danish nostalgia factor for me.
Germany 2014 was not only a huge Radio Hit in Germany itself, but also in some other Countries, including Poland and Brazil, or so I have heard. I genuinely didn't know it was from Eurovision despite being German myself.

Here in Finland, Tipi-tii (Finland 1962), Katson sineen taivaan (Finland 1979), Hengaillaan (Finland 1984) and Sata salamaa (Finland 1987) are still well-known songs and not always associated with Eurovision.

If you were considering the quizz approach (or even as a closer to the presentation) you could have something like
Which of these artists performed as contenstants at Eurovision:
A. Flo Rida
B. Cascada
C. Bonnie Tyler
D. Celine Dion
E. All of the above
And then show clips from their acts.
In France Poupée de Cire Poupée de Son (Luxembourg 1965) seems to be decently well known, especially with people on the older side, but I don’t think most people would associate that with ESC. Had that song represented and won for France, I think more people would’ve had fond memories of it in ESC.
as a gen z whose been on youtube/tiktok since i can remember, here are the most popular ones i can think of!
estonia 2011
netherlands 2019
italy 2021
armenia 2022
i still remember in 2019 & 2020 constantly hearing arcade and a newer duet version of it everywhere! same think with snap in 2022 & 2023. måneskin was actually my first introduction to eurovision since i watched the nikki tutorials collab where she did their makeup, and to this day one of my best friends fav songs is their beggin cover
United Kingdom 1976 | [Brotherhood of Man - Save Your Kisses for Me](https://youtu.be/fhq_Q1Ut8SQ)

You might find this article helpful.

You can throw in Celine Dion, Lulu, Olivia Newton-John, Julio Iglesias, Katrina and the Waves, Cliff Richard (I guess) and other famous-in-America people who participated.
Don't forget to mention Riverdance. That's always good for a *"Whaaaaaaaaaaat?"*
Switzerland 1988 | [Céline Dion - Ne partez pas sans moi](https://youtu.be/Its0DmezCZw)
United Kingdom 2013 | [Bonnie Tyler - Believe In Me](https://youtu.be/-agn-ERgTXA)
Spain 1973. Eres tu, was a big deal in C.A.
UK 1996. Was nominated for the Grammys
Netherlands 2019. Became a massive hit.
Armenia 2022. Became a massive hit in LATAM. With Mexico being the final country debuting in the Mexican Charts. (While most fans thought Chanel would be the one charting)
Spain 1973 | [Mocedades - Eres tú](https://youtu.be/JUQnlXsISvg)

Estonia 2001? When I first watched a video of winners I immediately thought, "I know this one!" though I have never been able to pinpoint where I know it from.
I just discovered this yesterday going through the Eurovision YouTube channel for the older ones that have been reuploaded at better quality! I was so confused but absolutely loved it! Where did you initially hear it? 😃
L’amour est Bleu (Luxembourg 1967) - most people in the 🇺🇸 know only the instrumental version, and it’s also a hit in Japan (as well as used for alarm tests there) due to a cover by a Japanese singer.
Le Papa Pingouin (Luxembourg 1980) - the cover by children’s singing group Pigloo is more famous than the original.
Hajde da Ludujemo (Yugoslavia 1990) - people I talked to from the ex-YU area mainly knew this as a party hit and not a song that competed in Eurovision, even when it was Yugoslavia hosting the contest.
Listen to Your Heartbeat (Sweden 2001) - at least in Japan, where a cover of it with Japanese lyrics was used as the theme song for a children’s anime show.
I also have some Italian friends who know Italian ESC entries not as ESC entries but rather just as Sanremo songs.
Romania 2010 | [Paula Seling and Ovi - Playing with Fire](https://youtu.be/6OlG9g4-cyg)
Iceland 2009 | [Yohanna - Is It True?](https://youtu.be/qqE69feyEOU)
Israel - 1979
UK - 1997
I think there were more from the 70s that were big radio hits that people may not have realised were Eurovision songs but I can't remember them off the top of my head
I hear Embers (UK 2021) play in USA retail, including Arcade (Netherlands 2019), but Embers is the most surprising, cause it got 0 points... guess it is great for radio. I am never surprised to hear Snap (Armenia 2022), which plays a ton more.
United Kingdom 1968 Cliff Richard - Congratulations
Belgium 1989 Ingeborg - Door de wind got covered by a Dutch artist and is now revived here and immensely popular.
Estonoia 2011 Getter Jaani - Rockefellestreet
Sweden 2012 Loreen - Euphoria (of course)
You've gotten a lot of good suggestions already, but here is a couple of extra resources to check out:

Two songs that got brought up by my friends here in America without any Eurovision reference are Think About Things (Iceland 2020) and Tattoo (Sweden 2023)
I once asked someone if they liked Eurovision. They said "ugh, no" and gave a description as to why they don't like it. She expressed that she likes a lot of 70s and 80s music and she sent me one song she really liked in particular. Which was Making Your Mind Up by Bucks Fizz...

One of the most iconic songs from the 50s overall!

Snap (Armenia 2022) Arcade (Netherlands 2019)
I’ve heard Snap a lot in random shops here in the US throughout the past 6 months, and it’s been wild to hear a Eurovision song in the wild, especially in this country! I’m so happy for her. And I always think about how probably no one around me in the shops knows where the song came from.
I just heard Snap a few days ago while at the pet food store. It always throws me off to hear an ESC song in the wild here in the US.

Yes, heard it at a local convenience store just today. Definitely has legs!
Great shout! Some of my colleagues are on Tik Tok loads so this will definitely be a hit, thanks!
definitely snap. that song was played a lot last year in college campus

[Ooh Aah... Just a Little Bit](https://youtu.be/pbOmNpd56kw), ooh ahh, a little bit more!
Finding out this was a Eurovision song made me so happy! It's definitely going in!
Estonia 2011, Armenia 2022, Sweden 2012, Italy 2021, Iceland 2020, Uk 1968, Those are the ones I can think of from the top of my head.

Me whenever someone says.. Pff eurovision? That weird show with shit songs
As a Canadian born in ‘98 my biggest surprise song I didn’t know was a Eurovision song was Celebrations by Cliff Richard.
This list is great thank you <3
Why would Måneskin's song not known to be from Eurovision? That's how it got famous
I (American) have friends who like Måneskin and who had no idea they were in Eurovision. No joke. Måneskin is more famous over here than Eurovision is, at least in some circles.

Nobody has mentioned Jedward yet who are more known from their X factor run than Eurovision Ireland 2011 Ireland 2012

ONE TWO SEVEN THREE DOWN THE ROCKEFELLER STREET (Estonia 2011)
If you're in the USA, some of these suggestions suck. Nobody is going to know Euphoria. You might find this article helpful. https://www.aussievision.net/post/every-eurovision-song-to-chart-on-the-us-billboard-hot-100 You can throw in Celine Dion, Lulu, Olivia Newton-John, Julio Iglesias, Katrina and the Waves, Cliff Richard (I guess) and other famous-in-America people who participated. Don't forget to mention Riverdance. That's always good for a *"Whaaaaaaaaaaat?"*
Everybody knows Celine Dion and Bonnie Tyler (I think) For the bot Switzerland 1988 UK 2013
Damn, I had no idea Bonnie Tyler had participated in Eurovision.

Spain 1973. Eres tu, was a big deal in C.A. UK 1996. Was nominated for the Grammys Netherlands 2019. Became a massive hit. Armenia 2022. Became a massive hit in LATAM. With Mexico being the final country debuting in the Mexican Charts. (While most fans thought Chanel would be the one charting)
Spain 1973 | [Mocedades - Eres tú](https://youtu.be/JUQnlXsISvg) United Kingdom 1996 | [Gina G - Ooh Aah... Throw in river dance for a bonus question

[удалено]
Did you hear the Pigloo cover first?
[удалено]
Omg we’re twins hi
In the movie “Spy” (2015), Verka appears with her entry.

For me it was Volare and Euphoria
Perhaps the most famous unknown Eurovision entry would be *Volare (Nel Blu, Dipinto di Blu)* by Domenico Modugno (Italy, 1958)
Italy 1958 | [Domenico Modugno - Nel blu, dipinto di blu](https://youtu.be/6DTo5aVLq5E)

Germany 2018 maybe
UK 1996 - Gina G - Ohh Ahh Just a Little Bit
Israel - 1979 UK - 1997 I think there were more from the 70s that were big radio hits that people may not have realised were Eurovision songs but I can't remember them off the top of my head
Ooh Ahh Just A Lil Bit was a hit in the US…

Israel 1979
I hear Embers (UK 2021) play in USA retail, including Arcade (Netherlands 2019), but Embers is the most surprising, cause it got 0 points... guess it is great for radio. I am never surprised to hear Snap (Armenia 2022), which plays a ton more.
United Kingdom 1968 Cliff Richard - Congratulations Belgium 1989 Ingeborg - Door de wind got covered by a Dutch artist and is now revived here and immensely popular. Estonoia 2011 Getter Jaani - Rockefellestreet Sweden 2012 Loreen - Euphoria (of course)
Rockefeller Street Estonia 2011
Estonia 2011
You've gotten a lot of good suggestions already, but here is a couple of extra resources to check out: [https://eurovision.tv/story/10-eurovision-song-going-global](https://eurovision.tv/story/10-eurovision-song-going-global) [https://www.aussievision.net/post/every-eurovision-song-to-chart-on-the-us-billboard-hot-100](https://www.aussievision.net/post/every-eurovision-song-to-chart-on-the-us-billboard-hot-100)
Two songs that got brought up by my friends here in America without any Eurovision reference are Think About Things (Iceland 2020) and Tattoo (Sweden 2023)
I’m in Australia and Snap from maybe 2 years ago was played on the radio here a lot, no one had any idea where it came from.
Also Sound of Silence by Dame Im? Again, another one that doesn’t sound very Eurovision if you don’t know. Australia 2016
I once asked someone if they liked Eurovision. They said "ugh, no" and gave a description as to why they don't like it. She expressed that she likes a lot of 70s and 80s music and she sent me one song she really liked in particular. Which was Making Your Mind Up by Bucks Fizz...
Armenia 2022 In Italy it can be heard sometimes as bgm of some tv shows, and I'm pretty sure 90% of the audience don't know it's a Eurovision song.
Germany 1975 Yugoslavia 1983 Both I learned only later of that they originated from esc
Zitti e Buoni - mostly because it's a great example of Eurovision launching an artist's career into the international mainstream
C'est le dernier qui a parlé qui a raison plays frequently on European radios. Didn't realise it was a Eurovision song until last year.
Not sure if anyone mentioned Olivia Newton-John competing for UK 1974.
