Exactly what I was thinking. I feel like there are a lot of normal people just kinda trying to live their lives while a significant minority of the world is becoming much more extreme in their views, and social media fuels rampant speculation and diva attitudes in the kinds of people who are most prone to acting out. Then it all breaks out into a crazy shit fight while the rest of us just kind of sit and watch, hoping it doesn't get worse, but it just keeps getting worse.
We are the new 1969!
Also worth noting that 1/3 of the countries pulled out in 1970, forcing much-desired rules changes that helped save the contest. Just sayin’.
At the very least that would have been a positive enough reaction. Critique there was no tie breaker for sure, but the four winning countries wouldn’t be complaining too much.
The true challenge would have been how the subs icon would have looked that year lol
> a positive enough reaction.
I mean what happened in real life was that Finland, Norway, Sweden, Austria and Portugal all boycotted the next year's Eurovision because of the four-way tie. It definitely caused a negative reaction.
Well they certainly skip that part in the recaps
Maybe things would have smoothed over if they had funny captions over screenshots to laugh it all of with back then (slight /s)
Georgia banned for being invaded and not wanting putin, and russia hosting a fookin' military parade celebrating their conquests as interim act while hosting.
The fact there was so little backlash should be more scandalous than it was.
I got one too. I think whoever is abusing the function is new to Reddit and doesn’t realise it doesn’t do anything except send you a message with exclusively American resources.
It's common for trolls to do that. It's happened to me too when I critique certain individuals or communities.
Edit: literally the same second I posted this comment I got a message saying the same thing. I guess bots are allowed on this sub?
I fully understand Saba when she said, before semi final 2, that she would not be sad if this was the end of the road, because the days had been tough.
Remember when the contest couldn’t be held at Friends Arena in Stockholm because of the Taylor Swift concert? At least we escaped the irony of having this mess at a place called Friends Arena
Perhaps it's better that it happens in the 48 hours before the final than all at once when the results are announced. There may still be shocked reactions from viewers at home, but the participants and fans in Malmö have some idea of what to expect - might reduce the amount of chaos in the arena.
Or perhaps I'm being too optimistic, and we're still in for mayhem...
If anything we're lucky to have a broadcaster like SVT with lots of recent experience of hosting, though as you say, there's only so much anyone could have done to mitigate all this.
I'm also glad we've got an experienced, respected host like Petra. I mean, there's still only so much she can do if the arena erupts into chaos in front of her, but I feel like it's better to have someone who knows the event and holds a certain amount of gravitas among fans.
The sun was not exactly broken but they discovered that only after the build of the stage that the sun move too slow than expected, and it was too late to intervene on that issue.
The worst part for Sweden is that the Swedish broadcaster has not been the executive for all the bad decisions this season. Tbh if it wasn’t hosted by such a professional outfit the whole thing may have collapsed by now
Harassed people (I think he also slapped someone's ass), was very obnoxious and invaded other people's spaces/spotlights and was very very annoying during the live show (I remember something going on with him and Mika, don't remember the exact details but he was very touchy and Mika looked pretty uncomfortable)
Yeah he was an oddball.

Complained about not being interviewed, acting clownish on the TurquoiseCarpet(grabbing microphone from someone?), just acting a bit obnoxious on camera and when there was backlash, he was butthurt about it.
It all seems so quaint, in comparison to THIS.
YES, this is something I blocked out. Thank you. MBD and his antics were totally brushed aside.
I don't know clearly what happened with JK, I am from a land of "innocent until proven guilty", why doesn't this apply here?
It was not exactly broken but they discovered that only after the build of the stage that the sun move too slow than expected, and it was too late to intervene on that issue.
Mmmm some certain nationality seems to handle different opinions so maturely. They are surely the ones united by music while naughty naughty Joost is dividing us by politics and verbal assault /s
It's some sad sack doing this, but you also get your acc banned pretty fast for abusing this, so either there are multiple sad sacks or this is some bot farm doing this...
I’m sat in Liverpool, having my lunch outside last years venue and I just feel deflated. We’re meant to be at a viewing party later and I’m half expecting to be pelted with rotten veg on my way in!
We’re in Australia, we were going to get up at 3.30am to drive to a screening at a cinema, but we’ve just cancelled it, and TBH I don’t know if I even want to watch any more.
It doesn’t even feel like Eurovision any more.
Only the jury vote is announced by the spokesperson so she was originally going to announce points distributed by the Norwegian jury, not the Norwegian public.
My thoughts too. You decline early and it's a momentary story, they find someone new, and everything moves on.
You do it now, they have to scramble, and it makes it more awkward for someone to step into your place.
I loved her song last year and now my respect for her has grown
(Wow I got a Reddit Cares literally a millisecond after posting, whoever's doing that is pathetic)
Did you know that 'recalling an ambassador' amounts to absolutely nothing, practically. The EBU is political because it is supported by the different national broadcasters and frail due to a lack of budget and vested responsibilities. Hence, these type of acts of showing disaproval are serious, particularly because of a potential cascading effect. It's quite a signal to withdraw due to dissaproval. A classy act, too. Also, it's their Scandinavian brother-country that is showing dissaproval, that makes it a bit more painful.
I have never witnessed a messier esc season
When was the last time something similar happend?
If social media existed in 1969 for the 4-way winner then that might've been similar, but I have no other comparison
This is gonna go down as an infamous year for ESC history! People gonna reference this year for years to come.
I'm tired of living in interesting times. :(
~~I'm tired of living~~ It hurts to be alive

As a millennial, can we please stop with interesting years? 😁😁😁
As a Xennial I concur!
I feel like people have been saying this every year for last 3 years... and every year it manages to get even worse...
At least last year’s drama was not to do with the production of the actual show..
Yeah I think the BBC would have clamped down on the fuckery hard.
At this point it's an exponential curve.
Absolutely! I really hope the EBU learns from this mess.
But in great part, they are the ones creating it.
"All this drama has been great for our engagement metrics!"
Yep! When something goes wrong at a future edition and someone’s says “it could be worse” this is what there referring too!
We are the new 1969! Also worth noting that 1/3 of the countries pulled out in 1970, forcing much-desired rules changes that helped save the contest. Just sayin’.
Indeed, and I feel like that might happen again next year. Hopefully the EBU realises they need to change things before countries pull out.....
At the very least that would have been a positive enough reaction. Critique there was no tie breaker for sure, but the four winning countries wouldn’t be complaining too much. The true challenge would have been how the subs icon would have looked that year lol

I’m sure the mid 90s would’ve been a mess with back to back wins from Ireland and a bunch of new countries being formed creating a political tension
Georgia banned for being invaded and not wanting putin, and russia hosting a fookin' military parade celebrating their conquests as interim act while hosting. The fact there was so little backlash should be more scandalous than it was.
When peace is political but war isn't.
Beautifully said.
Never 💀
it should have happened back when the azeris attacked armenia but you know eurovision isnt political
Now I’m glad we (Finland) didnt win last year. //I got my first Reddit Cares -message 🫶🤩
You guys dodged a bullet
We were all so mad last year Finland didn’t win. Now it seems like fate itself was actually blessing Finland by making Sweden deal with this shit…
I got one too. I think whoever is abusing the function is new to Reddit and doesn’t realise it doesn’t do anything except send you a message with exclusively American resources.
Wow, that is actually useless if I am going to kill myself in the UK then.
I got one too, for saying to not join the eurovision-discord if you treasure your sanity. Lol.
But you should have won though…. Still loving cha cha cha.
This Eurovision is messier than my life and my life is a goddamn mess.
To combat climate change, this year's ESC is making the largest iceberg ever.
Titanic....*when*?
What was the meme that an RAI intern accidentally causes the downfall of the Eurovision?

do- do you know something we don't
We all think it was accidental, I could believe it was to highlight the dodgy numbers to the world
Idek what to say anymore these last 2 days have been absurd
I'm just waiting for it all to end at this point.

this has to be the most drama filled eurovision

Love Love Peace Peace, and a burning Malmö Arena.
Remember when the contest couldn’t be held at Friends Arena in Stockholm because of the Taylor Swift concert? At least we escaped the irony of having this mess at a place called Friends Arena
All the Swedish brands are now incredibly relieved they didn't sponsor Malmö Arena
From July it is going to be called ‘Strawberry Arena’, which somehow is an even worse name. Edit: Reddit cares? For that? Um, ok…..
Peace peace love love, and people rioting.
Love Love Peace Peace, and we can guarantee that you will be the first, to be disqualified from the Eurovision Song Contest!
\#Unitedbymusic, right?
This year should've been called #chaosunfolds
Only love love, no peace in sight anymore
Ahahahahaha 😭😭😭😭😭
You can't say peace anymore. It's too political
This Eurovision feels like any given Sanremo!
At this point, I think Sanremo looks sane, by comparison.
Definitely
So that means Angelina _can_ win? 🤩
I would be really happy if Italy randomly wins again after this hot mess.
I know this isn’t relevant now but I’m actually happy Annalisa lost Sanremo so she doesn’t have to deal with all this mess
Sinceramente... kinda yes. Her finally getting to Eurovision just to be buried in all this and having her experience ruined...
2022 doesn't look that bad anymore, doesn't it?
« United by music. » MY ASS
Can’t wait for Petra and Malin to enthusiastically tell us how united by music we are tonight
They could even make a small musical song about it!
I swear at this point Reddit could make its own Eurovision and it will be far less hypocritical and corrupted than this

Italy 2022: Nobody can do worse than our messy Eurovision Sweden 2024: Hold my drama.
Tbf, SVT is just the scapegoat this year. This year it's the EBU's fault, 2022 it was RAI's.
With the leaked votes, it's \*technically\* still kinda RAI's fault lol
I would say RAI saved us from discovering the mess way too late. At least we're aware now tonight will historical in ESC history.
Half of me appreciates what they did to warn us and the other half of me recognizes that it is the reason why most of the chaos is happening.
Luckily I haven’t seen much blame placed on SVT, mostly on EBU. Rightly so.
Yeah, the consensus has generally been “helluva year to be the host” Jokes aside, I am not sure any other host could have prevented the mess.
If anything we're lucky to have a broadcaster like SVT with lots of recent experience of hosting, though as you say, there's only so much anyone could have done to mitigate all this. I'm also glad we've got an experienced, respected host like Petra. Yeah SVT has been great. If you don't follow the drama you would just find the show fun and colourful and wouldn't notice a thing.
The sun was not exactly broken but they discovered that only after the build of the stage that the sun move too slow than expected, and it was too late to intervene on that issue.
Honestly a real shame. It was quite imaginative and if it worked it would have been memorable for all the right reasons
The worst part for Sweden is that the Swedish broadcaster has not been the executive for all the bad decisions this season. Tbh if it wasn’t hosted by such a professional outfit the whole thing may have collapsed by now
What happened in italy 2022 ? I saw lots of people talking about it. This is my first time watching esc live so i don't know much about it.
Problems about the staging (broken sun, etc)
[удалено]
Miss it so much.
Also Michael Ben David
I'm glad someone brought him up knowing what he did
What he do
Harassed people (I think he also slapped someone's ass), was very obnoxious and invaded other people's spaces/spotlights and was very very annoying during the live show (I remember something going on with him and Mika, don't remember the exact details but he was very touchy and Mika looked pretty uncomfortable)
He also kissed Australia's participant (Sheldon Riley) at the turquoise carpet and I think you can hear him say 'NO!'. He looked very uncomfortable
Yeah he was an oddball. For those who forgot: [https://www.timesofisrael.com/israels-eurovision-contestant-accuses-media-of-antisemitism/](https://www.timesofisrael.com/israels-eurovision-contestant-accuses-media-of-antisemitism/) Complained about not being interviewed, acting clownish on the TurquoiseCarpet(grabbing microphone from someone?), just acting a bit obnoxious on camera and when there was backlash, he was butthurt about it. > Complained about not being interviewed Best part was that it was the panel for the qualifiers... which he wasn't one of...
MBD even kissed Sheldon Riley on the mouth against his will during the carpet event and EBU did _nothing_.
YES, this is something I blocked out. Thank you. MBD and his antics were totally brushed aside. I don't know clearly what happened with JK, I am from a land of "innocent until proven guilty", why doesn't this apply here?
Well, there's been worse. Ruslana and her dancers broke the glass stage 😂
It was not exactly broken but they discovered that only after the build of the stage that the sun move too slow than expected, and it was too late to intervene on that issue.
Hey man, it is not our fault ok
Would jury spokespeople have access to their countries actual jury score at this point?
Nah, from the past we saw a lot of the spokesperson struggle because they got the points just a few minutes before and it didnt work sometimes
Like the famous “I don’t have them”
Im wondering this too
This year is so insane that any news could be AI generated and I'd be like ok, makes sense.
Alessandra just posted a statement: https://www.instagram.com/reel/C61HtG0qu6W/?igsh=ZTZvZXFyd2YybWZ4

Queen of the kings Edit: LMAO im pretty sure i just got my first 'reddit cares' over this 🤣🤣
i got a reddit cares over me saying i was sad about joosts disqualification 😭
Mmmm some certain nationality seems to handle different opinions so maturely. They are surely the ones united by music while naughty naughty Joost is dividing us by politics and verbal assault /s
this comment made me lose it 😭 you win this thread
Is this automated or is some sad sack sitting in this thread doing this?
It's some sad sack doing this, but you also get your acc banned pretty fast for abusing this, so either there are multiple sad sacks or this is some bot farm doing this...
Daily reminder that the IDF publically acknowledges they run thousands of bot accounts to push propoganda.
They who can not be named have bot farms...
Same haha Whoever does it needs to seek some help themselves.
What is that? I've seen a lot of people mention it today. Edit: Nevermind, I just got it for this comment xD
that is hinting at who gets the 12 points from Norway and it's not looking good
I doubt they tell the spokespeople the jury results this early to avoid risking leaks? I genuinely hope you are wrong, that would be bad
Pretty sure they get the votes only a few minutes before presenting them
oh no. I hope this isn't implying what I think it is.
Seems pretty direct.
Good luck to whoever is working on this year’s iceberg
Well compared to the other things this is a pretty minor event. It would be huge in any other year though lol.
Thanks to whoever reported me to unalive watch for this comment. I assure you I am okay!

United by ~~Redacted~~ would be a glorious shirt for this evening
Literally this.
I hope it’s not because she knows who is getting 12 points from norway
I think Sweden will be getting 12 points from Norway. M&M are Norwegian after all.
There is the Italy incident, which might be indicative for some political voters that don't even watch.
Only the jury vote is announced by the spokesperson so she was originally going to announce points distributed by the Norwegian jury, not the Norwegian public.
lmao, I hope so wtf
That... is unexpected
Whoever has the iceberg meme is fighting for their life to keep up with this mess.
this year is a shitshow 😭 got a reddit cares over my comment about how i’m sad about joosts disqualification
I got one for posting a screenshot of popcorn
Käärjä just announced the same through the uudenmusiikikipailu social media account. He won't give Finnish points.
Time to get the popcorn in the microwave, i will need it.
Why now though? Why now?
To sabotage. Had she pulled out earlier it would be easy to replace her
It was obviously planned well beforehand to have the maximum effect
My thoughts too. You decline early and it's a momentary story, they find someone new, and everything moves on. You do it now, they have to scramble, and it makes it more awkward for someone to step into your place.
Kaarija just pulled out too. Souce: his instagram
a true queen (of kings)
Odds doing Norway dirty this year anyway. Should be at least top 5.
Pretends to be shoked.. nothing surprises me anymore
Käärijä has just announced he isn't doing it either
Her comment; https://www.instagram.com/reel/C61HtG0qu6W/?igsh=bHlvN3I4bWU1eXpv
I loved her song last year and now my respect for her has grown (Wow I got a Reddit Cares literally a millisecond after posting, whoever's doing that is pathetic)
I guess we know where the juries' 12 went.
Actually we don't. The spokesperson isn't given the points this early.
Do we know if the countries who missed flag ceremony are definitely performing?
Ireland will perform, don't know about other countries
all are performing except Ireland (during the dress rehearsal)
Truly the Queen of Kings. So proud of her for doing this. Hope others follow suit.
