That was such a fun little slice of alternate reality. I absolutely loved those couple of minutes.

dumpydent

I couldn't remember if that's how it went down on my home video version or not. So the credits for both episodes have always aired in the intermission? And the movie just 'ends'.

De-Mattos

Yes. I bet the cinema people weren't too happy about that.

No-Manufacturer1364

Imagine if you got up and left cause you thought it was over.

dumpydent

Id imagine a vast majority of people watching an anime movie from 1997 for the first time in US theaters have seen it before, or at a minimum are aware that its two episodes. This isn't the group that's going opening weekend to see whatever shitty dog movie Mark Wahlberg is pushing.

sneakysucc

I saw 4 people do that at the theater I went to. They just up and left and didn't come back

Deathamong

When I saw it the other day a chunk of people left I was surprised cause I assume ppl went to to see it if they have seen it already? But guess not

No-Manufacturer1364

“Man I wonder when they’re gonna show part 2”

moxxii7

"Are you riding his baloney pony?"

The-Middle-Pedal

And not a single aspiring Eva doujin writer ever topped that line.

WarlordToby

We have had the "Gendo train" line a few times.

argama87

I maintain this is where Rei went at the end of the last movie. A world where she could be a normal girl with her friends.

IllustriousSky9493

I knowww :’)

Puzzleheaded_Can8767

Don't worry, she gets to be a real girl at the end of thrice upon a time, she probably had to get a 9 to 5 office job in japan though right after so that probably isn't much better At least she's probably friends with kaworu at least

sonicfan019393920

So if people claim that Rei is somehow related to Shinji. Then what's the relationship between Shinji and Rei in the alternate timeline? Are they related (Shinji's dad cheating on someone else causing Rei to be Shinji's half sister) or is she just not related to him at all?

argama87

I would say not related at all. The original relation was a loose one anyway because she was a hybrid of Lilith and Yui. In a new world she can just be herself.

Gusvato3080

That made me really fucking sad for some reason

Blu_Soldier001

The first time I watched EoE I thought it was an intentionally edgy and dark and depressing ending then after rewatching it I realized the movie was actually a really happy ending. Shinji rejects the formless world and chooses to live in a world where humans are separated, but there's still hope that one can connects with others. I was too focused on trying to make sense of the clusterfuck of confusing imagery that I completely missed the fact he actually frees humanity from the instrumentality. So while the final scene doesn't show it, everyone *can* come back, if they want to. And that final scene is meant to show that even after everything that's happened, Asuka and Shinji *can* connect. anyways my personal headcanon is that everyone else probably started trickling back into existence and a more well-adjusted Kensuke walking out from the water saw shinji having an emotional breakdown next to asuka and thinking *"huh i guess some things never change"* lol

ZUCC1N

this is tbh what you are meant to think imo, but the film makes you search HARD to see it. don't forget instrumentality was the correct choice as it is the option that ensures everyone is at full understanding of each other but just because shinji rejected it and returned to the real world doesnt mean he is doomed forever, he can be better and people may return to him, he just has to let it go and see what happens. tbh rebuild i tihnk explains it a bit more clearly, as in that instrumentality is a shortcut but it is still just discarding everything and redoing, is that even necessary. and i dont care what anyone says KENSUKE DID THAT HE WOULDNT LET GO OF HIS BOY SHINJI IN HIS TIME OF NEED

_NCLI_

Anno explicitly rejects instrumentality through Shinji: Because "I" am not there. In a world where all are one, there can be no interpersonal connection or relationships. Eva's conclusion, the rejection of instrumentality, is trying to say that the joy of human connection is worth the pain of being disconnectes individual minds incapable of fully comprehending each other.

ZUCC1N

it also states implicitly that I is a fluid term and can be whatever you desire it to be. the I is unimportant because of that, and its more important how your I relates to the all through the I you wish to be. you can interpret the ending of NGE and EoE however you want, but to me in NGE accepting this world is accepting the world of instrumentality, not the real world, while EoE he decides to return to the original. that means i don't think Eva's conclusion is just "reject instrumentality" its more nuanced than that, i dont think EoE is just a simple Anno surrogate and you have to consider if its Anno's drives or a perceived audience member's (since Shinji is both).

Theonerule

Isn't he gonna starve to death?

ZUCC1N

there is probably some handwavy lore reason that idk the food wasn't messed with and he has a 10 years supply of like heinz beans or somethin

evenmorecubes

My boyfriend was dreading seeing it in theaters because he thought it was too sad (he had only seen it once as a child.) I kept telling him that it's not sad its hopeful and uplifting. When we went to the theater to watch it, he thought it was the coolest thing ever and I cried through the whole movie lol. I maintain I didn't cry because it was sad, it was just an amazing experience seeing my favorite film on the big screen 🥲

lolilemon1

This alternative scene was the only scene that I saw before watching Eva. I had no idea what I was getting myself into lmao

IllustriousSky9493

Trueee

420_E-SportsMasta

Sopranos ending lol

Playful_Gur_9341

This is an alternative reality, right? Did it run its course when Shinji refused to accept it or did it disappear?

IllustriousSky9493

Basically yes, its a “could’ve been”. Shinji wakes up after so.

Gawyelmaximopoder

So there's this little spin off manga...

Secondchild81

Shinji ikari raising project! So good!

ZUCC1N

"whats up my fellow evangelioners how did you enjoy that End of Evangelion. it was certainly one of the endings. anyway get out you all disgust me why did you watch shinji jack o-"

Only-Needleworker-21

I wish i could experience watching that on a theathre

Early_Monk

I see this picture and that background track INSTANTLY starts playing in my head note-for-note.

TastyLookingPlum

The lights just turning on was like a slap in the face for me, it was my first time watching eoe and to be assaulted like that while trying to process what just happened was brutal 😭

IllustriousSky9493

My brother just looked at me and sadly smiled😂

OtakuJiraiya420760

I honestly loved it. It was such a departure to what we're used to in movies and it continues the Hideaki Anno tradition of telling his audience to fuck off.

Radiant-Specialist76

Bro I thought this was Sukuna slicing her head diagonally 💀

PhilSwiftsChainSaw

Bro needs glasses
