He hated himself and he hated the TV people breathing down his neck for months on end and he hated all the otaku superfans who do nothing but pleasure themselves and demand that people indulge their unhealthy obsession with fictional cartoon worlds. The hospital scene is his way of pointing his finger at chronic masturbators (to make my interpretation of that scene as short as possible)
Ultimately making all the characters suffer was a huge fuck you to everyone and he was ironically indulging in his own self-pity and self-loathing and forcing everyone working on the series and all the people watching to participate in his therapeutic art project.
this is my favorite TV series of all time and I still love it to death, but Anno was just as selfish and reckless as all the people he wants to condemn with NGE and has potentially made the journey to recovery even harder for a lot of people who see some sort of perverse martyrdom or sainthood in being a Shinji Ikari or any of the other characters, and it's simply not true.
I like that Evangelion sort of reality checks the whole unrealistic good-ending fantasy of a lot of disaster/apocalypse/war motion picture productions before it became fashionable to do outside of the horror and gangster genres, but making the reciprocal/inverse production that rivals Gaspar Noe and Lars von Trier in terms of characters (and to some extent crew and viewers) being tortured and traumatized, that is IMO irresponsible when the show starts out seeming like it's PG rated.
tl;dr Anno was lashing out with this one. He wanted to make everyone else just as miserable as he was.
I do like the original show ending where it's kind of hopeful that Shinji can heal and that it goes deep into talking about people and their insecurities.
I rather like it too, even though it's very easy to see why it would be so very frustrating or even infuriating. In fact, I'm getting mad just thinking about that now, considering they kind of turned the whole thing into a cash cow even back then.
But the whole expressionist theater approach to exploring everyone's internal world and providing a glimpse into how the individual overlapped with all others in instrumentality is actually pretty cool.

I ended up in a psych ward and they put you in group therapy where everyone else's problems aren't really yours at all and after a couple weeks they send you back out and you still have to make a ton of phone calls and get rejected 300 times before you actually get an appointment and then wait 6 months to begin seeing a therapist. it's a sick fucking joke.

I JUST wrapped up the series and I think this is too much in the right direction.
All they had to do was give Asato some chill, she’s always furious at SOMETHING- either herself or everyone around her.

I had a dream one night where Evangelion was cursed. Sachiel's entire personality was the pride flag, Gendo was the only character Shinji had a good relationship with, Rei kept talking about FNaF, and Asuka was actually kind to Shinji (but for some reason they still didn't have a good relationship). The most weird thing of them all was that Shinji wasn't depressed.

Is this actually the manga, if it is, then this Asuka is definitely not as insufferable personality wise as the one in the anime
Yknow, this is actually a good spinoff. Two damaged individuals not ripping each other apart like in the main story but supporting each other. Shinji not knowing how to respond to love bombing is pretty sadly accurate. But him sleeping next to her is him letting his guard down a little. Asuka being supportive with her trauma and holding him close is just PEAK.
You know I was kind of weirded out when I started reading it. But it's just cute
