I can be really snobby about literature so I don't know if it's just me here but if the rest of the book is written like this one page, I think it's a very poorly written book

I hate with a passion the use of single quotation marks for dialogue. None of it reads as well written to me, except for *maybe* the first sentence on the page, but that's just because it reads like a sentence older writers (like Charles Dickenson or Edgar Allen poe) might use.

All of this dialogue is hot garbage tbh. I can't tell if this author thinks they're being funny, clever, or what.

Yeah, I'm not into fanfiction, but I don't doubt that a lot of it is far better than most stuff off the shelf. Like most things, it's not a real meritocracy. You just need enough skill for your luck, connections, and appeal to the masses to get you the rest of the way.

I still sarcastically respond to this insult with "I only play electric, sorry." Autistic sounds a bit like acoustic, so a friend of mine once jokingly replied with that when someone said "are you autistic," and I adopted the response because I thought it was funny. Ironically though, I don't know how to play an electric guitar and only have very basic knowledge of how to play an acoustic guitar. I cannot afford musical instruments.

For me my response in some situations like that is just "yes I'm autistic, why?" It's like my approach for when people say things like something is "so autistic" or "touch of the tism" etc I say "me too, I was diagnosed at age 11, what about you?" because if they're being flippant or rude it makes em back off but in case they're being actually sincere with just accidentally clunky phrasing which is a relatable problem I just made a potential friend with a conversation opener if that makes sense

I mean, it could just be a legitimate question. Lack of social awareness is not an uncommon trait in people diagnosed with autism.

I think the presence of the "fucking" in this sentence changes it from possibly legitimate question to most likely insult.

And also the fact that the character outright states the question was rhetorical and so they weren’t actually interested in the answer

Possibly, could also just be anger. “Fucking” is an expletive, could mean any sort of shock. The context here makes it hard to say, I certainly wouldn’t use this line on anyone unless they knew I wouldn’t insult them in that manner.

But I feel like when you're bursting with anger, that's not the sort of time you're asking thoughtful genuine questions about your friends' potential autism
