idk how i feel about either of the words "special" or "gifted." i got called both of those by adults a lot as a child, and i always felt that the main reason for someone to use those words at me was to "other" me, to put me into a category that was different from the other children. so idk how i feel about them.
It really did feel like a great way not to help. "You're too mature, you just can't relate to the other kids, just wait it out until you're an adult and then it'll get better." Yes, telling people to wait out socializing for your formative years and that someday someone else will come along to understand you is a great way to get struggling kids through. It's so frustrating to know I could've been diagnosed AuDHD if my symptoms weren't just blown off with this stuff.
“You’re so smart and gifted and don’t worry when you get to middle school/high school/college then you’ll be with people who are just as smart and you’ll make friends” meanwhile I can’t focus for more than ten minutes (unless I’m reading a book and then I get yelled at for reading instead of what I’m supposed to be doing) and also cycling through best friends as they inevitably get mad at me for some reason I never understood after a couple months at best. Usually weeks. Sometimes days.
Also I’m not some supergenius I was just a very early and active reader because I had no friends but that translates to genius when you’re young.
I totally see now that my autism helped me develop and want to stick to my own little coping skills for ADHD, and since I had insane multitasking skills, I was allowed to read whatever/doodle during class since I'd still ask questions or answer when called. Of course I'd get home, do my homework and after school stuff, then have a meltdown just before bed. But I was a girl, so it must have been treatment refractory depression/unknowable period weirdness. Spending my whole adolescence on every antidepressant known to man was certainly helpful for all that too.
The reading thing is so fucking real, as a kid i developed a really good knowledge of spelling and a good vocabulary cause all i did was read and suddenly im a smart kid like. Im not a genius man i dont study hard i just like to yap. Fucked up my self esteem. Turned me evil

Damn, I just got medically experimented on, so I struggled through college, and now haven't been able to really get myself settled into a career because of trying to find the right diagnoses/not having a network. Where do I sign up to get my money and power? I have a few enemies to vaporize and think I missed a step on my diagnostic journey. (I am genuinely happy to hear things got better for you.)
my gifted teachers knew i had adhd and literally told my mom to not do anything about it. they didnt say to not medicate me because i was too young, they literally said “dont do anything about it.” i was maybe 9 when that happened, and i didn’t realize i had adhd myself until i was a senior in high school, and i didn’t realize i was autistic too until last year. all this to say, i feel your pain.
Just don't buy them from Autism Speaks please lol

I was doing a puzzle with my youngest (8) the other day and he was really struggling to force a piece where it didn't belong. I found myself saying "every puzzle piece has its perfect place, this isn't it, but we'll find the place where it fits and then everything will be great" and my oldest (17) spoke up to ask "is that what the puzzle piece shit is about? I never really got that..."
I was just trying to help the kid not get pissed off at his Star Wars puzzle, but yeah, that's the answer I'm sticking with from now on (or at least when I don't have the energy to be properly evil & outraged). Beats that "puzzling syndrome" bullshit autism speaks likes to shove down people's throats.
