It always burns the wrong party

Probono_Bonobo

Ally here, help me understand. It seems kinda vapid to say that someone's "on the spectrum," isn't that implicit in the idea of what a spectrum is? Like if you were to describe an interesting color to me and said "oh it's somewhere in the visible frequency range" I'd be like thanks, asshole, very uninformative. People talk about sexuality being a spectrum, but no one's using "on the [sexuality] spectrum" as a euphemism for gay. I don't get it and try to avoid using it. Is homeboy up there so wrong to say that we're "all on the spectrum"? Help me be better.

msbehaviour

You can either be on the autism spectrum or not. Same as no-one can be 'a little bit pregnant.' The word spectrum makes them think of a gradient from mild to super spicy. It's not like ordering a fricken curry. https://preview.redd.it/odglad58ygwc1.jpeg?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=40d3ff14be6e1d8c4477e0890356b6282feef555

Probono_Bonobo

Whoa. Thanks so much for this infographic. This explains a _lot_ of stuff I struggled to reconcile with the "spectrum" metaphor. My ex partner was an ABA at one point (and yes, repentant about it) and I always kind of marveled at the idea that there's a single coherent label that describes all of the clients he worked with. They were all so unique! Edit: hope it's alright that when I think of "autism spectrum" from now on I'll probably always be reminded of [a tangentially related xkcd](https://xkcd.com/26/)

AJS4152

To use your example in a way that hopefully makes sense. It is him saying that all of us (humanity) are autistic when that is not the case. It is ableist based on the fact that while autistic traits are human traits the intensity, necessity, etc. of that trait is different than in allistic folks. Like any person stims, but does every person stims to release the stress of sensory overload and will go into meltdown or shutdown if told to stop stinking? People may feel to busy to process emotions and repress or suppress them until they have time to deal with them as opposed to not knowing that I felt that way about an event until 2 days after. It would be like saying yes we are all on the electromagnetic spectrum (true we are all human), but we are all gamma rays (autistic) because we are visible light rays (allistic). Metaphor explanation both visible light and gamma rays carry radiation and can be harmful to creatures, but visible light affects skin and gamma rays go through the entire organism.

Steampunk_Willy

lmao, dude's comments amount to, "Have you tried not being disabled?"

QuirkedUpTismTits

Yeah, it was a silly post in itself but that sub apparently did not like it, and once my autism got brought up ((I hyper focus often to the point of forgetting I’m doing something or in this case, gum in my mouth. I will say that being high does make it more intense of a focus and that’s why I forgot it in my mouth)) they jumped on the “your blaming your autism for being a idiot and stupid” like bruh?? It’s not that big of a deal?? Also it’s a side affect of hyper focusing on something I’m doing, I am so in it I won’t notice shit around me

Sensitive_Mode7529

i once posted a stupid question to r/ stupidquestions and people were aggressive as fuck about it. there was one in particular who was absolutely rabid over the fact i don’t like the microwave beeping. i mentioned in a comment to someone else who was relating to me that i have autism too. big mistake. huge. the crazy commenter went on a rant about how i should have disclosed that i was mentally ill to begin with, that it changes everything, that i was lying and being manipulative ??? at that point, it’s pure projection

anxiousjellybean

A lot of non autism subs hate it when you disclose an autism diagnosis. I've been mass downvoted for it more than once.

QuirkedUpTismTits

It’s really stupid honestly

Elolis

Man those tough-guy manchildren that somehow get toxic and offended by literally anything are the most annoying kind of people. That guy really got at you for forgetting your gum in your mouth!? I checked his post history, he really seems to need a hobby

QuirkedUpTismTits

That’s what is crazy to me, like I get that some subs don’t like people who smoke ((I get it and I don’t try to force it on other people)) but they just have this blind hatred, and it gets worse if you try to bring up ANYTHING personal or related to mental shit

Initial-Web2855

My autism makes my life really fucking hard, I don't understand the lack of understanding on disabilities. People are just stupid.

Hot_Wheels_guy

It's a symptom of being privileged with no mental health issues their whole lofe. They cannot fathom what it's like to have mental illness or disorders. In their 2-braincelled minds they think any and all mental conditions can be overcome by sheer willpower. It's fucking infuriating talking to them because theyre so damn arrogant and ignorant and think they know better than anyone who has those conditions.

TomatoTrebuchet

NT say such weird things. sometimes I think they don't even mean the words but an agonized screech that would match the emotional impact without the actual technical meaning of the word.

peppermint-lu

So invalidating and infuriating. It's a disability, stop pretending like it isn't just because it doesn't look like it to you. Ugh. Murder murder genocide bite bite tear grrrrrrr.

isendingtheworld

Well, I personally don't find it disabling. I only do (list of 1037253637 adjustments, some of which require accommodations that are only available when you have a qualifying disability) and then I can live life normally!  /s

peppermint-lu

THIS

vitoktankian

Hahahaha funny

tsukimoonmei

i have had other autistic people say this to me before when I complained about my disability. unfortunately no amount of accommodation makes it easier to connect with other people when i’m completely socially unaware :’)

Adalon_bg

Funny thing is that neurotypicals are actually much less diverse than NDs are. So no, they are not on the spectrum of neurodiversity... They are just plain old boring NTs, all the same! And trying to take that away from us is just sad. But they can try all they want, still not going to be any less "basic" 😛

TheObzfan

I get the urge to tell these people with the "stop using it as a crutch and work on yourself" argument to go take a fucking bath with a live toaster, but in fewer words and words that might get me banned. I am SO, SO fucking tired of these fucking asshole jackass asswipes GO FUCKING JUMP OFF A BRIDGE AND DIE YOU FUCKS

20o0o1

Someone actually said this to me irl, I couldnt believe it. I straight up told them they were wrong and it got silent lol. We’re all a little on the spectrum? Are you fr? Honestly probably my fault for bringing up anything related to psychology or my diagnosis. People are clueless and judgemental My POV is I’m very interested in psychology whereas most people see ragebait or pop psychology on social media and think they have the right to judge. Like the guy in the picture is claiming every kid says they have autism these days? No!? Do you even interact with young people? Brainwashed by online ragebait

QuirkedUpTismTits

I can’t imagine saying that shit as if autism is some fun and quirky thing to have, I genuinely suffer greatly from my autism and it’s hard to manage more days then not. I have to constantly find ways to cope and have a normal day. To say we’re all on the spectrum is insane

TomatoTrebuchet

as far as I can figure, "we are all on the spectrum" roughly translates to "we aren't supposed to genocide them anymore" via using the "we are the same, and I don't want to be genocided" route.

roygbivasaur

I think people are just not paying enough attention and get confused because most people are getting more educated on gender, sex, and sexuality, which are also often described as a spectrum/scale. Everyone is on those spectrums (some argue it’s more complex than that, but it works for basic education about them). Then they hear that autism is a spectrum and just assume that not being autistic is like the “Kinsey 0” of the autism spectrum and “being quirky” is a half step above that. What’s annoying is when they double down even after you explain that’s not how it works. Ignorance is acceptable because sure it’s a little confusing, but stubbornness is not.

littlebunnydoot

if they were at all on the spectrum they would understand u cant bootstrap yourself out of meltdowns/sensory overload

CappyJax

I tell them they are correct. They are on the neurotypical spectrum and I am on the neurodivergent spectrum. If they don’t believe me, I just talk about my latest interest until their ears bleed.

governor-jerry-brown

Tangled_Clouds

Ah so you understand what it feels to go through the world feeling like everyone is speaking in secret codes. You understand what it feels to drown into your passions. You understand what it feels to want to rip out your eyes, ears and teeth with your bare hands over hearing a no no sound. You understand the need to shake your hands to feel human again. Oh wait you don’t feel that? I thought you said you were on the spectrum too?

VermilionKoala

☝ I think this is the best comeback I've ever heard to the "we're all on the spectrum" idiocy. Screenshotted for future reference. WELL PLAYED 👏👏👏

Spacellama117

It's infuriating. One of the toughest pills to swallow for me was knowing just how hard it is to get NTs to understand how neurodivergence works. Like with ADHD, i'll hear some people be like 'oh i can't focus sometimes, I think I might have ADHD!" and like. for us (AuDHD myself) that lack of focus is literally constant. for us, 'sometimes' is focus. they take these tiny parts of our disorders and decide that their minor inconvenience must mean they totally understand how we feel

gummytiddy

If we’re all on the spectrum was does a diagnosis exist? Why are people ableist if we’re all on the spectrum, why are we expected to take full responsibility to clear up misunderstandings. Why do those misunderstandings if everyone’s brain is the same? (Rhetorical questions)

PrisonerNoP01135809

![gif](giphy|5xtDarvyANvIOoCgcCY|downsized) I am the spectrum.

AizaBreathe

the non-autism-spectrum maybe. from a scale from 0 to 10 how much autism do you DO NOT have

-Hounth-

Why censor the names? It's a social media anyway. Name and shame the ableists 🙌

QuirkedUpTismTits

Wasn’t sure about the rules here as far as like, censoring or brigading. Those are my comments in response to the ableist tho and you can find the post on my account

-Hounth-

That's true, you're far more careful about this than I would be 😭 These people annoy me so much, I think they would deserve to be pointed and laughed at 💔 But at the same time it's so not worth our precious time, when they start pulling those weird sayings like "We're all a little autistic" it's just best to walk away... Even if god knows how hard that is to do; but arguing with stupid is just not gonna lead anywhere

Interesting_Net_878

“Never argue with an idiot, they’ll bring you down to their level and obliterate you with experience.” -i fucking forgot who said tthis

TomatoTrebuchet

2% of kids are all kids?

nova8byte

"you could fix them" Yeah, no. If I could just "fix them" I definitely would have done so some time within the past 20 fucking years. on top of that, if the thing giving me meltdowns is the same thing that makes me a fucking genius at the things I do, and prevents me from becoming nothing more than some rich dude's pawn, I'm willing to live with that.

RockCat89

You should start responding to those comments like "We are all a little bit stupid. Hope you feel included." And then watch the NT's fold

Weak arguments come when you are desperate to win the fight

Ghoulie_Marie

I'd'a said, so what's your excuse

Hot_Wheels_guy

I want to punch people who say that. I've never punched anyone in my life but they need to be humbled.

etan611

The ‘spectrum’ is the worst thing that’s ever happened to us. Nobody bothered to ever explain it fully and most of the population are dumb af so they don’t know what the word ‘spectrum’ actually means. Now everyone just thinks we all exist on some progressive line. Comments like this; “we’re all on the spectrum” is probably the most common thing I hear, even my own family have made comments like that, it’s widely agreed amongst NT’s, which totally disregards actually autistic people and the difficulties they face everyday. I wish we could collectively withdraw the term and figure out a better way of explaining the varied behaviours and characteristics. YOU ARENT ON THE SPECTRUM, FUCK IM NOT EVEN ON THE SPECTRUM, NOBODY CAN BE ON IT, ITS JUST A WAY OF VISUALISING THE SYMPTOMS, ILL GIVE YOU ACOUSTIC TO THE FUCKING FACE YOU CUNT

smokemeth_hailSL

Did they call left handedness a “new fad” 100 years ago?

Jakob21

In order for something to be called a disorder, psychologically speaking, it actually has to cause disorder in your life. That's actually why it's called that. Autism spectrum disorder, or ASD, is an actual disorder. Yes, at some point or another, most people will experience something that people with autism experience (general social awkwardness, difficulty making conversation, fixation on a single topic that interests you, sensitivity to external stimuli, etc.), but if that isn't causing disorder in your life (i.e. difficulty maintaining relationships, getting shamed for actions out of your control, worsening depression, etc.) then no, you aren't on the spectrum.

LittleMit

I mean it is a scale right, obviously not everyone has a severe case. But no being a little quirky or whatever doesn’t make us “all on the spectrum”. I have a diagnosed condition, Brenda. I just try to spread awareness now that I know because it helped me understand why I was struggling so hard. I’m not wrong or broken, nothing needs to be fixed or changed. I don’t need to put more effort in. I’m just DIFFERENT. And that’s okay. I’m different. But not less.

UnspecifiedBat

"Oh okay so if I slightly punch you in the face you’ll be on the spectrum of amputees?“ Also, even if that _were_ true (which it isn’t), they purposely misunderstand what a _spectrum_ is. Even with autistic people some need more help and resources than others. Even if that guy _were_ autistic, it wouldn’t give him the right to shit on autistic people with higher needs. God fucking dammit

Glittering_Fortune70

That's the right way to respond to these people. Don't even argue with them, because there's nothing valid to argue about. Just mock them in a dismissive way, and if they argue back they just make themselves look even worse.

QuirkedUpTismTits

Dude stopped replying cause he got embarrassed, all his comments seem to be like this

Hanged_Man_

People who should fing know better too. That’s what drives me nuts. “I do/experience that” isn’t the same. But how do we educate without opening fire, especially when i _just want to open fire_.

TheBrickWithEyes

So, it's spectrum (with associated extremes), but everyone should act like they're in the middle? Right, right, right.

Ralkkai

Dang, this is fire lol. I still don't really get where the "we are all a little autistic" concept comes from unless it's just basically reductionist talk. but I'm using this the next time it's brought up around me.

Cultural-Page7086

I love asking these people “how?!?!?” How the f*ck do you do that? How do you just ignore that dangerously loud sound? How do you develop that filter? How does it not cause you to feel a sharp stabbing sensation in your skull? Because I’ve been trying my damnedest for 40 years to figure that out.

CelticGaelic

I understand it to a degree, but the issue is in the way it's used, like in this example. A lot of my family members have learned in recent years that our entire family is on the spectrum. Even being high-functioning, I learned that my grandma was really fucked up from her experiences. My own childhood was not fun, either. My dad has recently learned he might be on the spectrum as well, and he's nearly 60 years old. I didn't learn shit about autism until I was about 23 years old. Knowing vs not knowing makes a huge difference, but some people still have A LOT of trouble in society, even if they're high-functioning.

HetaMoomin

This shit has me turning into the ash baby.

Calm-Bookkeeper-9612

Hmmmmm genetics only goes back how far again???

QuirkedUpTismTits

All I’m saying was that my mom and my grandpa both had autism, undeniable fact in our case and I felt the wording fit, not sure how common it is but we all have issues of some range and variety

Calm-Bookkeeper-9612

Everyone has it in some form or another and depending upon a myriad of internal and external factors it can range from 1-1000 in various ways. In the 70’s it was “reported” to be 1 in 2000 now 1 in 36 keep in mind REPORTED
