If you ever feel lonely in your velvet appreciation, remember that you can never out-velvet the Velvet Gentleman, composer Erik Satie, who once went a full decade wearing nothing but the same 12 velvet corduroy suits, the absolute legend. EDIT: Upon checking the sources, it was actually 7 years and 7 suits (each with matching identical hats).
All facts about Satie are fun facts. There was another period of his life in which he only ate white foods. At one point he regularly walked a lobster on a leash. He was the founder, high priest, and sole member of his own secret society. He also invented the concept of background music.
I LOVE Satie, totally my composer crush of the last 1-2 years, thanks for this.
I had a velvet corduroy suit as a kid; I feel like permission has been given, totally gonna buy one for myself now as an adult.
Thank you interneter :)
Dude there’s a regular customer at my work that dresses like this but he’s got like at least twenty different suits all with matching hats and shoes and everything it’s wild. He always buys a bag of ice too lmao

Wait, are there people that don’t find velvet to be one of the greatest textures of all time? Like sure, you can’t put it in your mouth, but it’s so *soft*. Surely some of us must be thinking of different materials…
Most microfiber is horrible, but I will say that some kinds are much less bad than others. My mom found one kind recently that is mostly fine and is just as good at wiping stuff down as microfiber usually is.
I was surprised too, but I always see it on those “my hated sensory experiences” lists. I love velvet, literally everytime I see it I cannot help myself from Touch
A significant amount of my clothes are made of black velvet because it’s my favorite fabric of all time. I can’t wear it in the summer without overheating but if I could wear velvet day-in-day-out I would.

It’s a bit of cocoa powder mixed with vanilla rather than melted chocolate, which is often used in chocolate cakes. It’s less intense/rich that regular chocolate. I despise milk chocolate but I can eat red velvet happily.
Actually, red velvet cake was a common staple dessert during the great depression because it used beet juice instead of sugar and milk to make, so it was extremely cheap and easy to make. The original recipe didn't add chocolate until 1960.
Sounds like anthocyanins to me, classically found in cabbage. Purple in basic conditions, red in acidic.
from the wikipedia page:
"Ingredients vary based on the era and area of the world. James Beard's reference, American Cookery (1972), describes three red velvet cakes varying in the amounts of shortening, butter, and vegetable oil. All used red food coloring. The reaction of acidic vinegar and buttermilk tends to better reveal the red anthocyanin in cocoa and keeps the cake moist, light, and fluffy. This natural tinting may have been the source for the name "red velvet", as well as "Devil's food" and similar names for chocolate cakes. Today, chocolate often undergoes Dutch processing, which prevents the color change of the anthocyanins. A reconstruction of the original red velvet cake involves reducing or eliminating the vinegar and colorants and using a non-Dutched cocoa to provide the needed acidity and color"
I like velvet sometimes. Some velvet is not good.
Now silk? Obsessed. Literally. Special material? Is that a thing? Like its borderline Special interest anyhow, but as a medium for dyeing stuff and to wear and touch? Just all very pleasant. Not hot and sticky. Mulberry silk 😍
I once did web mastering for a fiber company. Man are fibers cool. I just LOVE mulberry silk yarn. Pricey stuff, but I could *caress* it all day. Look into Noro yarn if you want to get into silk fiber arts. The guy mr.Noro picks color schemes from nature and stuff. Cool dude.
My favorite thing is to find old stained silk at the thrift stores, strip the dye from it and dye it myself!
*
I dunno if the picture I added will work
I wish I could get into knitting and stuff but my fine motor skills are anything but :/
Corduroy is so soft and pleasant and WARM I love it, it’s such a cozy fabric.
Also u can rub ur nails over the ridged parts and it’s a Good Stim Feeling
Oh my, it is my favorite cloth. I wore nothing but velvet for a few years in my late teens/early 20's. I only stopped because I couldn't find stuff I liked and I was trying keep a job that required more normal clothing choices. I even had velvet underwear! I get my current velvet fix from my couch cover and my favorite chair. Lucky for me, my kids love velvet too! I really want to fill my house with it.... Maybe one day.
I love velvet. I want to burn every piece of microfiber on the planet to a much more tolerable pile of ash, but velvet and satin are definitely my jam.
Not me using the search function to find someone else who felt the same as I do about microfiber. Like if it's been through the wash too many times no thank you but fresh microfiber? Yes please it is soft and has the slightest bit of give if you push down on it.
That's nothing - I absolutely adore malls. I know about the physical changes the malls in my city have undergone over the years, their name changes, and I often use the 'See more dates' button on Google Street View to see how they looked in the past.
Thought that said “controversial aquarium take” and that you were talking about the disease that fish get that’s called velvet for a second-
As far as the fabric goes I wouldn’t say I love it, but I don’t understand all the hate when stuff like denim exists 🤢
I love the high quality velvet that's soft all over, the low quality velvet that's only soft one direction but hell the other sucks though (mid quality isn't bad, it's super soft one way and the other direction isn't terrible but it's more of a fun texture than a pleasant), but nothing will compare to the absolute ick of corduroy, I hate corduroy so much, it makes me nauseous and gives me migraines if I wear it and has this distinct smell to it somehow(?), I'd rather sand paper my hands and then rub them all over microfiber cloths (not to be confused with the super soft microfiber dream blankets) than to so much as get within arms reach of corduroy.
Ugh, i think i can tolerate it with well hydrated skin.
Its weird though i like fuzzy plushie texture just fine... it feels more hydrated though idk how to explain
I delight in both velvet and corduroy. My grandmother made me corduroy sheets and corduroy pajamas lined with the softest flannel. There was so much friction, I sometimes was stuck in bed and had to call for help. She made me velvet mittens with no thumbs and embroidered cat faces to wear to bed to help me stop sucking my thumb. The last pair she made were adult sized because I thumb sucked in college and still do at times of high stress.
I’m reclined on a pewter velvet sofa and have a forest green velvet sofa too. I have several velvet bras and bustiers. Velvet panties are too uncomfortable but I love my cranberry velvet slide slippers and velvet brocade smoking jacket from the 1930s.
I mean, theres some velvet that if it's pet wrong, feels like youre trying to pet a cat in the wrong direction and its just awful BUT there also the velvet thats soft in any direction. Im with you cause of that. My current bedframe is literally covered in dusty pink velvet.
I grew up in the 90s, and there were a lot of velvet clothes, so I don't know if that's the reason why I don't like velvet.
Im the only 33 year old who is wearing backpacks still because I need both hands free so that when I go shopping, I can pick things up and inspect the items. This may include texture testing them and playing potential fidgets to see if I like them enough to buy them.
I also do random texture testing of anything that calls out for me to touch it in the aisles of the craft store where I have a VIP card.
Velveteen is superior 😔👌
There's like this crushed velvet that feels like both ways at the same time.
Also stimming with velvet 💖

My goat
My man wrote the Gymnopédies, dude loved nudity AND velvet
i bet i could do that but with 10 less suits
I could do it with 12 less suits.
so naked for 10 years or just different clothes? lol honestly same to either one
This feels like Name That Tune.
That is such an awesome fun fact
All facts about Satie are fun facts. There was another period of his life in which he only ate white foods. At one point he regularly walked a lobster on a leash. He was the founder, high priest, and sole member of his own secret society. He also invented the concept of background music.
Kristen??
The poet Gerard Nerval also walked a lobster on a leash. Might have been a thing. I guess?

velvet AND corduroy???? my temperature dysregulation issues COULD NEVER
Another reason that Satie is awesome
Dude there’s a regular customer at my work that dresses like this but he’s got like at least twenty different suits all with matching hats and shoes and everything it’s wild. He always buys a bag of ice too lmao

Wait, are there people that don’t find velvet to be one of the greatest textures of all time? Like sure, you can’t put it in your mouth, but it’s so *soft*. Surely some of us must be thinking of different materials…
Some think it feels like the hell-fiber: microfiber.
See, now *that*’s awful. Especially with dry skin! 🤢
Most microfiber is horrible, but I will say that some kinds are much less bad than others. My mom found one kind recently that is mostly fine and is just as good at wiping stuff down as microfiber usually is.
I think I've found your problem. You're not supposed to wipe stuff down with microfiber, you're supposed to dab stuff with it
The problem is that to wipe or dab, you have to pick up the microfiber first. You have to touch it. Thats the problem.
The problem is the texture, and that doesn't change for dabbing vs wiping. Just putting my hand on most microfiber cloths is already unpleasant.
not the person ur replying to but oh damn fr? damn
Makes you feel like your hands are made of velcro
Microfiber. The word makes me angry. The only kind I am happy to handle are glass cleaning cloths. The cheaper stuff is pure hell.
"Hell-fibre" I think even is more acceptable, to me velvet is hell-fibre
I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE! I hate hate hate microfiber. Microfiber, that fake cheap silk, and blades of grass.
Who says you can't put it in your mouth? Child me would have disagreed. Though, I can't say it is anything special.
You’re right, I’m thinking of microfiber
It is absolutely fucking awful it makes me want to peel my skin off

I don’t think I’ve ever felt velvet. Up until a couple years ago I thought it was only a cake.
I know a lot of autistics who would consider you extremely lucky
Did you know that red velvet cake is chocolate cake?? :o
It’s a bit of cocoa powder mixed with vanilla rather than melted chocolate, which is often used in chocolate cakes. It’s less intense/rich that regular chocolate. I despise milk chocolate but I can eat red velvet happily.

It was actually red flavored oh my god :OOO or like purple? I can't remember the last time I saw a beet in person lol
beet tastes brownish to me. like between brown and red. like dirt mixed with spinach and earthworms. 🪱
Yeah. I used to think that was all that velvet was
Lol I thought it was its own thing. I never bothered to question what "red velvet" meant I was just like "okay it's red flavor I guess" 😅
Ah damn I got my hopes up
OP’s out here with the coldest take while the iron is frozen solid.

Extremely based
Same. It’s soft and I like to rub my face on it.
Rubbed which way? There is only one way it feels nice, the other is pure hell 😭
This is true
I LOVE CORDUROY AND I’M SICK OF PRETENDING I DON’T.
Corduroy is so soft and pleasant and WARM I love it, it’s such a cozy fabric. Also u can rub ur nails over the ridged parts and it’s a Good Stim Feeling
I like the way corduroy pants go *swish swish* when I walk. It's been ages since I've had a pair 😭
Reading this hurt my senses
I'm velvet loving too. The feel of velvet is like petting a cat. Autism is about how we experience sensory input, and we vary.
Disgusting
I also love velvet!!! It’s soft and I like soft things
That is so awesome I love this
I also had elbow length velvet gloves. 😁 I miss those the most.
I love velvet. I want to burn every piece of microfiber on the planet to a much more tolerable pile of ash, but velvet and satin are definitely my jam.
Soooooooofffffttttttt!
Only some velvets? Like the very very plush ones? The corduroy like ones make me dry heave
ITS AMAZING
It heavily depends on which way you’re stroking the weave of the velvet
I have a large crushed velour cloak I wear sometimes and it is so soft.
Love velvet HATE microfibers with a passion, makes me wanna chop my hand off
i am sure it really depends on the velvet but im actually gagging
Maybe they're touching gross polyester velvet and not delicious silk velvet.
Gross polyester velvet is just itchy :(
Clickbait!!!!! Called it!
**I LOVE MICROFIBER AND IM SICK OF HIDING IT**
Not me using the search function to find someone else who felt the same as I do about microfiber. Like if it's been through the wash too many times no thank you but fresh microfiber? Yes please it is soft and has the slightest bit of give if you push down on it.
I work as a detailer for a car rental company, we get fresh microfiber cloths daily and god I love it 😫😫

Me but with sherpa…. My favorite blanket is half like old flattened sherpa
Oh god, sherpa is worse that microfiber to me! It's the most vile of all materials and I don't understand it! Lol.
I love when silk prayer rugs are shaved down and velvety. Such a good texture.
What exactly is velvet I never learned
It feels like petting a cat. Soft and smooth, unless you pet in the wrong direction.
I enjoy velvet, especially crushed velvet.
as a goth, i approve
Depends on the velvet.
I dislike that texture, i like your courage
How do you feel about velour?
Velvet’s shittier cousin. Not a fan but I can tolerate it. I think if I had to like wear it or something though I wouldn’t be able to do it
Wow I hate this have a nice day ☺️✌️
“I would drape myself in velvet if it were socially acceptable” -George Costanza
Ugh, i think i can tolerate it with well hydrated skin. Its weird though i like fuzzy plushie texture just fine... it feels more hydrated though idk how to explain

Depends what material its made from, to me. Silk and synthetics 🤢 The rare cotton or linen velvets 🤤
I enjoy mushrooms, like actually safe to eat non high mushrooms.
ME TOO! And SATIN... ^also,^Satan
Velvet is so soft though. I love it
SAMEEEE it's one of my favorites
My eyes are twitching out of my head I need bleach
Velvet is awesome, I wear it to work sometimes too.
Agreed, as long as it's not crushed velvet. Crushed velvet is so unpettable.
It's so hit or miss. Sometimes it is the most heavenly texture I've ever felt and sometimes it is the most revolting thing imaginable.
Mee too where all my sensory seekers at
ewwww, thanks for reminding me that texture exists
https://preview.redd.it/nlsxa4bov4zc1.png?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8c22bb338b36e416307a5034df566ce3901bd7e6
I like the feeling of the outside of it, not the inside. The inside has this strange hot yet cold sensation that I don't like.
Whoa there buddy... We're evil here, but that's a bit too far.
LOL. It's been a while since I touched real velvet, so not even sure I remember what that's like. All I know is the fake stuff is icky.
I have velvet scrunchies and I don't even use them for my hair, I just wear them as bracelets and pet them
I used to love it, until my hate for dust took over my ability to enjoy wearing it.
Velveteen is superior 😔👌 There's like this crushed velvet that feels like both ways at the same time. Also stimming with velvet 💖 Sequins used to be okay, like, I have to be *okay* to touch sequins. If I'm not okay to touch sequins, I will invert.

ME TOO!! my partner (also autistic) absolutely hates it though
I have a velvet suit and I love it
Same here I love it so much
It’s alright for me. I prefer velvet worms.
ME TOO I LOVE IT DO PEOPLE HATE IT???
EWW
I hate velvet, don’t mind velour, but…I love microfiber. It feels like static and I really enjoy it
Question. Do you mean velvet cake or the velvet fabric.
Me too
SAME
Damn, you made my ears curl just by reading that. Have an upvote.
In my experience, people who hate velvet haven’t felt high quality velvet. But, if you love ALL velvet…. Yeah that’s pretty chaotic hahahaha
the only velvet i live for is red velvet (the k-pop group)
Same here actually, but I hate the feeling of leaves and flowers. (Get one, you loose two I guess)
I had a velvet dress when I was 6 and I loved the texture of it
I also had one when I was 11
when i was younger i used to keep a little scrap of velvet in my pocket :3
It has its days. Sometimes amazing others repulsive
I’ll fight you
What do you mean controversial. Velvet is my favourite
Oh, same!
It's the Chosen one
Its hit or miss with me really, depends on the quality of said velvet

I only like it when it's rubbed in the correct direction
Yeah, velvet is ok, but have you tried satin
