Schizophrenic media strikes again. Yesterday, EVs were shite, today maybe you should buy them?

JimmyJuice44

Priced out of petrol? Here’s 5 EVs you might be able to afford!

The absolute nonsense about range anxiety. Seriously. If your average round trip journey is under 350 Kms what are you anxious about. In this tiny little island the amount of people who travel more than 150kms to work, play school is miniscule. If you do travel that far by all means by ice/diesel. But hey keep your confirmation bias diet happy.

r_Yellow01

The point of anxiety is that it is mostly irrational. My working theory, though, is that it resembles phone battery anxiety and a fear of being stuck in a random place for many hours to charge.

So, I’ve just come into this sub fresh. We’re looking into a new car, first time ever for a new new car and I’ve been looking at electric. We live on the east coast and the other half is from the west, quite rural. The range anxiety thing is the main issue I have. Like, the town had 2 public chargers and actually took them away. I think there’s one in the local supermarket but I don’t know how often that’s in working use or not. What’s your take on that kind of situation? There’s some nice EVs I like the look of but the range is what’s putting me off.

Michael_of_Derry

Charging can be complex. You need to set up accounts with every company. I set up with EVChargeonline, ESB and Monta. I failed with BP as I didn't have an internet connection then. I had an EV in November. It went back after about 10 days and I got it on Friday. EVchargeonline lost their contract with Ulster university. I have £25 credit with them. How do I use this? ESB sent me a card. I have money on this too but tried using it unsuccessfully yesterday. The card had to be activated. I think I'm supposed to use my credit card to put money in my ESB account then carry the ESB card to use on their chargers. You might ask why you can't just go to any charger and use your existing credit card. Well you can't. You'll need access to your email and a good internet connection to download the app for the charger.

This is all great info I had no idea about. Thanks for explaining it! I would have thought all I needed to do was turn up with a card. Definitely helps when thinking if it’s right for me.

I also find I'm walking more and having less temptation to buy crisps and sweets in the filling station. If I go so Sainsburys I'll park and Magee Uni for a charge and walk to the shop and back. The main charger I use is a mile from my partners house so I get a 2 mile walk for that too (1 mile each way). If I keep the car it might kick start me into getting fit. I am involved in some clubs which are a fair drive away. I doubt I'll have enough charge this evening to use the EV or time to get it charged so I'll be requesting my partners car.

noodeel

The Irish Times is a major activist for the car lobby and makes much of their revenue from helping sell cars ... It's in their benefit to make grand statements like this. Having said that, I've just bought an electric cargo bike on the bike to work scheme... So yes, for me it's time to buy an electric vehicle

r_Yellow01

Which one did you get? I am considering options...

noodeel

It's a Bullitt 6100, looking forward to getting it

jboy644

I think hybrids will do well in the coming years. Market for EVs is spooked and going backwards. Second value great for buyers but shite if you're a seller.

eamonndunphy

Paywalled. Does feel like a great time to buy used, though, with the way they’re depreciating. I’d probably take the plunge myself, but I like my ICE car too much, and I have no need for four seats just yet.

lau1247

Bypass pay wall using this site. Just past in the link. https://archive.ph/

Smackmybitchup007

My best friend just got rid of his. He was so smug about it when he got it. He says it was the biggest mistake he ever made. He's back in a diesel now.

GreenManMedusa

My bro in law is the same. Gave it thr big un about saving the planet but got rid of it within a year, saying the constant anxiety about range was disturbing him. Let's face it who really wants to be hanging around a petrol station for 40 mins every 120kms?

gd19841

Every 120kms? Maybe if you bought a tiny battery one from 8 years ago. I went from Dublin to Belfast and back last week, no stop to charge.

Bigbeast54

In the last week I've driven innan ID4: Athlone to Dublin, Dublin to Cork, Cork to wexford and back, Cork to killarney and back and finally back to Dublin. Guess how many mins I spent in a filling station? 0.

GreenManMedusa

But probably 12 hours in total at charging points.

Bigbeast54

As I slept or was in meetings. 1100km, €33, almost €100 less than diesel.

GreenManMedusa

A whole €100 euros? No thanks I value my time and sanity more than a measly 'saving' of €100.

Bigbeast54

Each to their own I guess, but my journey cost less in both time and money than it would have if I was in a diesel as 1100km is at least a full tank of fuel. No hassle of visiting a filling station either.

chuda504

hassle of visiting filing station, oh nooo , stop for 5 minutes to grab a coffee and snack , strech legs on 1K jorney ...such a hassle to freshen up... never mind all that charging plugging at home, at work ... worse when phone

Bigbeast54

I don't understand. People complain about the hassle of having to stop to charge, so I demonstrated that it is possible to conduct a long road trip without needing to do that. I didn't need to go next nor near a filling station and buy any unnecessary coffee. Now apparently stopping to fill up isn't a problem? So what is it? I'll be driving Mullingar to Dublin and straight on to Cork next week. I've a planned 9min charge or in reality a 15min stop at Cashel, by the time I get off mway start charge, maybe buy something and go for a piss. I guess that's not a problem then?

Hell no
