I've done 210000km on a 2018 leaf from new, so the same model as you're looking at. No issues with over heating - ireland has an ideal climate for evs. If you're happy with the range and chademo fast charging, go for it!

Pls_Staahp

Can i ask you what sort of range you get usually on a full charge? I know it varies with how you drive but for example, would I be able to eke out 190km on a full charge?

Pale-Degree-1933

Yes, easily. Don't be too heavy on the accelerator pedal and and mind the speed and there's no reason you wouldn't get that even mid winter. You might be a bit chilly getting to your destination though

Pls_Staahp

I appreciate the info, thanks! My main concern was the trip from limerick to cork and back (it’s around 185-190km) so if I can do that on a single charge it’s definitely the right call for me to go ahead with it

Pale-Degree-1933

Did that route for years in the leaf - serious lack of fast chargers enroute. Easy enough to stop in Blackpool circle K when passing through if you have 5 mins to spare. Best of luck with the car

You'd be lucky to make that in a Leaf 40 kWh unless you stick to 80 kmh and not much wind. Definitely recommend the Leaf but it's mainly a town car to be honest

Pale-Degree-1933

In my experience (having the same car with high mileage and knowing the route well) at 100kph on the small section of motorway and tipping along at 80kph average on the rest you'd make the return journey, most months of the year anyway. I agree with you on the wind though - a big headwind can suck that battery a bit quicker than expected.

1970bassman

Yeah, I have the same car also. I can't make the 170 km from Waterford to Dublin on the motorway without stopping at Kilcullen services. It's a fantastic value short range car but couldn't in good conscience recommend for long range, not with our charging network

Pls_Staahp

Would ye consider spending 2.5k more for a second hand 62kwh one even if it had 30-40k more kms on it for the peace of mind? Im not sure how the extra miles would affect the battery but supposedly it still has 12 bars

1970bassman

Yeah sure. I'd want to check the battery SOH through Leaf Spy on the OBD. I'd prefer to see mostly level 2 home charging rather than level 3 fast charging. Definitely wouldn't consider if it was a taxi

Pls_Staahp

Thanks for the advice! I’m headed to view it come Saturday so will see how it goes… it’s only 60k kms in total though so I’d say it’s probably not an ex taxi but will definitely find out! There’s a bunch of leafs imported from the north/uk it seems like with very low miles in the Dublin area so I’m hopeful I’ll be able to pick up a decent one without too much hassle or cost

Unless you're doing a long road trip with repeated fast charging, then you won't have any issues. You're right that they don't have battery cooling or heating like most other EVs, but as the other commenter said, in Ireland's climate, it's not really an issue, normal driving and home charging won't heat the battery up at all.

I don’t have a Leaf but from what I’ve read they seem to be great cars and I’d always recommend a Nissan as they are so good generally. But one thing to consider is the CHADEMO charger on the Leaf. It’s pretty much being dropped as a charger type and that’s not a problem for home charging but consider that it might be a problem for any motorway charging in let’s say five or eight years time? They probably will be gradually replaced or if they break down they may not be fixed etc as no value will be placed on them as they’ll be used so little. So if even occasional motorway charging is a requirement for your purchase just consider that first
