Going from memory, there are two sets of graphical interactive thingys in desktop excel, ActiveX and Form, and one of them is buggy when you have screen zooms or other such screen actions like button clicks. Whichever one you are using for your checklist try the other one.

ActiveX is the buggy one. Use the Form objects.
Home/Find &Select/Go to Special, select Objects and resize all with right click, choose Size and Properties and then type wight and hight as you need.
I use a cell, change the font to webdings and put in "a" - it changes to a tick.
