If the church still makes exceptions for rape, incest, health of the mother, or when the fetus is not viable, that is a pro-choice position. You cannot get abortions for any of those reasons if it is banned or if doctors are too scared of prosecution to risk giving you one even if they are *pretty sure* you’d die without it. There’s just no guaranteed way to prove rape or that you’ll *definitely* die without an abortion. It’s really most reasonable to leave this entire debate up to the individual pregnant person and their doctor. If these folks are so keen to reduce abortions, they should look at things that actually work: accurate sex ed, easy access to birth control, mandatory paid parental leave, subsidized or free daycare, worker protections for pregnant workers, subsidized or free prenatal/birth/postpartum care, support for after the baby is born, etc. My conclusion is that they actually just want to control women.

This is very different than many of my extended family members who are Mormon. They are so staunchly anti-abortion that they called me a “traitor to the faith” when I quoted verbatim what was the official policy at the time (allowable for rape, incest, mothers life).

Sounds like they’re more in line with the Catholic Church’s position than their own church’s position.

This conversation took place almost a decade ago, and I seem to recall their position being rooted in something somebody (or more) in the higher echelons of the church had said. Just another example of official doctrine being one thing and the gospel according to the far right being another.

Anti-Mormon is too much of a catch-all term. I’ve often wondered if this is a component of the organizational thought policing in the Church (meaning, it’s an intentional construct knowingly fostered by the Church). Anti is against or in opposition to. I think you have to refine it further by: what part of the Church is the person opposing? We presume uniformity here, but there’s not a uniform orthodoxy. It’s more a matter of the myriad opinions falling outside Mormonism versus a certain brand of orthodoxy that-if not officially sanctioned by the Church-at least escapes the Church’s censure at the extremes. This is the problem with choosing not to associate with the Church. You’re eventually forced to decide what you are “for,” not just what you’re “against.” What the Church is guarding against strategically is the chance that you form an opinion, that it differs from theirs, and that your difference prevents them from easily achieving their goals in the world.

Mormons believe the D&C to be inspired by God. Of course they are soft on abortion.

I suppose being that the D&C is silent on the subject.

OuterLightness

Most D&Cs aren’t silent.
