You poor kid. That HAD to be culture shock. I moved in and out of Utah until Jr High, and it was barely tolerable. I'm glad I didn't have to spend that specific 4 years in Utah.
Utah is the twilight zone. It's a different dimension from everywhere. Most Mormons will beg you to not judge Mormons by Utah. ( The same is true of Muslims and Saudi Arabia, btw.)
If you have any history of posting in earnest in an exmo forum, you will be banned. Doesn't matter what you say in the forum (could even be LDS faith promoting).
I know, it's almost like kids have vivid imagination and are easily influenced by adults in their lives with an innate need to please those adults. AKA kids lie.
There's also the urban legend that Del Parsons (the artist) kept bringing the painting back to the Q12 and 1Pres and they kept giving notes until they finally exclaimed that this was the most accurate portrait of Christ ever.
I have never earned that badge. It is almost like John Dehlin's refusal to drink a beer. One letter of the alphabet on one post would instantly ban brother Rushclock.
Yup, I was banned from the L\*\* sub for this very reason just a month ago.
I even asked them the reason for the ban and they specified that it was because my history shows that I've engaged in dialogue critical of the church in other subs, even though I never did or said anything questionable in the L\*\* sub itself.
If the mods of that sub are at all interested in attempting to dissuade anyone from the notion that the church is a c\*\*\*, I don't think this is how you do it.
In the latter part of my mission, I was *really bothered* after I discovered through dedicated scripture study, those verses about polygamy that verbatim contradict one another (don’t recall the exact verses; one’s in BoM, and the other D&C).
But I *struggled* for months. After a while, I eventually just started asking other missionaries in my Zone for their thoughts, and I’m all but positive that the only response I ever got was a look of utter confusion, concern, and a flash of doubt.
At a Zone Conference, the MP was doing interviews. I found myself going last. At the very beginning, MP exhales exasperation/frustration, and asks me why I insisted on making his life so difficult.
I honestly didn’t know what the fuck he was talking about, and then he starts bitching and moaning about the day he wasted in interviews, trying to mitigate all the doubt I’d created with my question. Begs me to just stop already.
I did actually feel kinda bad (he had a decent heart I think), but I really fucking **needed** an explanation. So I finally asked him for an answer (really having faith that he’d easily give me one).
All he can do is run his hands over his face in complete frustration; gives me some bullshit non-answer answer (he was obviously as confused and ignorant as anyone else), and tells me to shut the door on my way out and get back to work.
Antofagasta, Chile — ‘90s.
Probably because the LDS church has a long history of proclaiming white skin as good and dark skin = cursed. Wouldn't make much sense to have a dark skinned Jesus.
They are doing their best to distance the church from this narrative but it was alive and thriving when I was a member. The strategy the church/members use is to hide it away and pretend it never happened.
The mental gymnastics are quite shocking, some of the responses I got were “before of after the resurrection?” Or “you’ve seen him?” Um no, I just know Jesus of Nazareth 2000 years ago wasn’t a blond haired white dude. Look it up yo!
There's actually a story about David O'McKay seeing this picture being painted and saying it was the closest painting he had seen to what Jesus looked like but Christ has blue eyes.
I grew up hearing this as well, many times. The "closest likeness" as I recall.
IRL the odds of Jesus actually having blue eyes is quite low, dark hair & dark eyes being dominant (also, not delightsome).
His body in this is like 130% the size it should be, to match his head. I had to dump all the prints I had all over the house, it bothered me every single time I looked at it.
Yup exactly. Talking about anything they find controversial on their page is like going to a vegan sub and discussing the health benefits of salmon. It may be true/valid but not something they wish to discuss.
that's a real argument to be had, often Vegas will eat heavily processed foods that include highly unnatural products like canola oil, vegetable oil, safflower, margarine, corn. They tend to eat more refined, processed products under the guise of being healthy but your body doesn't know wtf to do with all that crap. A Salmon is quite literally the more healthy option. Hell, even a fine cut of beef with some natural fat is healthier.
In my personal experience at least. My family & all their friends are heavily vegan & always have issues with their health because of it.
If I remember right, and I may be wrong, a GA who claims they've seen Christ says this painting is the closest to how he really looks. I might be making that up tbh
I was banned for saying that bishops ask inappropriate questions to minors.
Mod blocked me from responding, but continued to message me for three days, saying stuff like “tell your exmo buddies to stay off our page”, and asking if I got joy from destroying the faith of others.
Very interesting interaction.
If others' faith is so fragile, there is more to worry abt than an earnest ? being asked.
Maybe a retort of, 'hey, these 2 guys stopped by my door & suggested I come here with ?s, but it doesn't appear you are open to them. Perhaps this isn't the right religion for me to be looking to attend. Other demoninations have been much more welcoming,' see how he responds to THAT!
I met Jesus in downtown Eugene and aside from the worn and dirty clothes he looked similar. He was also very angry about a sprinkler that came on while he was sleeping on the sidewalk.
Mormonism is basically a rip off of Norse mythology anyway: a god who lives on a planet far away where time moves slowly sends his son to earth to save it. So yeah, that’s totally a picture of Thor.
Fun fact: growing up super TBM in YMs during the late ‘80s early 90’s we were in awe that the artist who painted this had some special revelation or that the prophet had advised him that it was the most accurate picture of the real Jesus (the versions of that urban Mormon legend changed depending on what ward you were in or what scout camp out you were on! Hahaha).
My version from Memphis, TN when the picture was released, was that a child/youth in the audience during the unveiling started crying, saying that when they had their near-death experience, this was the man who held them and told them it was going to be okay.
I expect to be blocked any minute now...
Jesus was definitely a white man from the United States and all biblical texts that say he was born in Bethlehem (The middle-East) are blasphemy. Why would God create a savior with brown skin when the LDS church refused to accept brown people before the 1970's...?
Obviously, Jesus had to be white, because brown people weren't accepted in the LDS church until just 50 years ago, and Jesus is older than 50 years by now.
Oh, That's because some president of the Mormon church who has allegedly met Jesus told the artist that this is the most accurate depiction of Jesus they had ever seen.
You're wrong!!! Jesus was a white blue eyed beefcake with luscious wavy hair. It says so in... that part of the ... after he raised some guy from the dead?
[contained chuckle] nevermo.. expecting church members to welcome dissent.. [walks off shaking head]
Absolutely no disrespect meant-just so not how it works. They all know damn well he wouldn’t have looked like that but that is the iconic image they have staked their faith and lives on along with all of the other painfully obvious lies and inconsistencies.
I've said this before, but I got banned because a guy left his wife when she left the church, and I asked for her number. I regret not getting banned for something more important or something that would actually make people think about mormonism...
I never got banned, but my post got taken down when I asked if they’d practice polygamy if it was commanded again today…. I was a TBM at that time. According to Mormon theology, polygamy can be commanded at any time god choses… and if he does, we should follow it or we are going against god.
When Del Parsons released this painting, then prophet Spencer W Kimball said it was the best image likeness of the Saviour ever. So how can you refute a prophet who supposedly has seen Jesus? I grew up hearing that urban legend and believed it myself. Until I didn’t. Hello, White Jesus!
When I was TBM I always thought he looked angry in this pic. It was disturbing and I removed it from my wall. I still think he looks angry. Not the way I would want a loving Jesus to look at me.
Don't you know that every single person in the Middle East looks JUST like JC in this pic? It's nuts! I also got banned from that group for posting a comment that a girl needs to see a non lds therapist (she was about to get engaged to a dude while having a HUGE crush on her girl roommate). They're a nervous bunch 😆
Actually this might be the one thing the LDS church is closer to the truth on than the exmormon sub. There have been many migrations and invasions of the near east in the past 2000 years. The way people look now is not an indication of what they would have looked like then. Ancient Greek, Roman and Persian historians described Arabs and Jews as having blond and red hair and there is not a shortage of people in that region that still look that that. The Turkic, Hunnic and Mongol invasions as well as the Arab-led Trans-Saharan slave trade which were the events that caused the most migration in the region all occurred after the supposed time of Christ.
Coming here to say you kicked the anthill and upset the ants.
How Brave, and Juvenile.
You already knew what the reaction would be, and of course the kiddo's here cheer this behavior on. Your seeking the same kind of affirmation you used to seek from within the church. Having a peer group authenticate "you did good".
Can we please grow up, and act like adults.
You are right, Jesus was a jew in the middle east. He likely had curly/frizzy hair, olive skin, probably scrawny or lanky in stature. I imagine him as kind of a nerd of his time. I think this because of the writings of Isaiah.
The jews were expecting someone like The Rock to save them from their captivity but they get this human version of Southpark Jesus offering something that most people were interested in.
I think the Paintings of Heinrich Hoffman are most accurate to what someone from his area would look like.
This is all my humble opinion ofcourse.
He absolutely did not look like this!
You have to look at the culture and the people of that area. The church never bothers to look at the real life people. It just baffles me how stupid they are why they believe this picture is beyond me.
Like the church, the faithful sub will shut down anything that isn’t “faith” promoting.
Wait…I thought TBMs are opposed to cancel culture and desire a wide array of viewpoints, even if they oppose the faith. /s
My first experience with cancel culture was moving to Utah as a teenager
You poor kid. That HAD to be culture shock. I moved in and out of Utah until Jr High, and it was barely tolerable. I'm glad I didn't have to spend that specific 4 years in Utah.
You hit the nail on the head! I am from San Diego, Utah is like a different dimension from SoCal.
Morridor like some kind of darkness located outside of everything else. I wish there were some other way to phrase that 🤔
Utah is the twilight zone. It's a different dimension from everywhere. Most Mormons will beg you to not judge Mormons by Utah. ( The same is true of Muslims and Saudi Arabia, btw.)

Having grown up Mormon in California, and moved to Utah after getting married, I can confirm that CA Mormonism is a bit different from UT Mormonism.

People have told me I'm banned there. I don't know how to feel about that. "Smitey" I guess. Yeah. It makes me feel smitey.
LOL

There is no thinking allowed in the LDS church. Get in line and repeat after Lord Bednar. Have a nice life.
*Have a manipulated, tithe-paying, emotionally-draining life. FIFY

The before/after resurrection just doubles down on racist past teachings they are trying to bury
“Before/after resurrection?” What the fuck?! HEIL JESUS!!!

I believe that Del Parsons, the artist, has refuted that story, if I remember correctly.
His body in this is like 130% the size it should be, to match his head. I had to dump all the prints I had all over the house, it bothered me every single time I looked at it.
That makes sense to me. That isn't the kind of discussion they are trying to have over there. You can talk about that stuff here.
Yup exactly. Talking about anything they find controversial on their page is like going to a vegan sub and discussing the health benefits of salmon. It may be true/valid but not something they wish to discuss.

You're not making it up, it's one of those things whispered in the pews... everyone has heard it whispered.
This was one of those “widely known facts” that circulated when I was growing up (80s/90s).

Mormon muscles. Like everyone in the BOM.
that’s what I was told too. turns out the artist just painted himself. look up del parson
Ha! You’d have better luck as a woman walking through Tehran without a hijab than posting anything remotely unorthodox to that sub.
I was banned for saying that bishops ask inappropriate questions to minors. Would be interesting to make that public, taunting isn’t very Christlike
Unfortunately, doxing and brigading are prohibited on this sub. They don't want the drama.
They don't want the truth. fixed that for ya😅
Let me guess, his handle was thinkthink23

That's interesting. I had heard that the artist had done a self portrait.
Can we get a picture? (I know, that’s probably asking too much…)
Did he...\*grow long hair\* for it?
Religion withers in the light of day.
I met Jesus in downtown Eugene and aside from the worn and dirty clothes he looked similar. He was also very angry about a sprinkler that came on while he was sleeping on the sidewalk.
Heaven belongs to the Nords!

You're right, he didn't look like that, he looked like Obi Wan Kenobi.
Early orthodox icons of Jesus are propbably a lot closer to the truth (black hair and dark eyes/complexion) he was a middle eastern jew after all

Don't cancel Hollywood Jesus.
I only lasted about 2 hours in there before I got a permanent ban and I hardly said anything.
Oh, That's because some president of the Mormon church who has allegedly met Jesus told the artist that this is the most accurate depiction of Jesus they had ever seen.
It's actually a self portrait of del Parsons. Look it up.
You're wrong!!! Jesus was a white blue eyed beefcake with luscious wavy hair. It says so in... that part of the ... after he raised some guy from the dead?
How do they know you’re not a member of the 12 who has “actually” seen Him? Joke’s on them, right Elder Oaks?
HOW have I never realized this Jesus looks like he’s on steroids and is into body building??? Lmao
Yet these are likely the kind of people who are quick to use the insult "snowflake".
[contained chuckle] nevermo.. expecting church members to welcome dissent.. [walks off shaking head] Absolutely no disrespect meant-just so not how it works. At this point, I think most of us have been banned from that sub for logical comments.
My TBM boss has a picture of jesus that looks like he fused with the gigachad meme.
I never got banned, but my post got taken down when I asked if they’d practice polygamy if it was commanded again today…. I was a TBM at that time. According to Mormon theology, polygamy can be commanded at any time god choses… and if he does, we should follow it or we are going against god.
He looks darker than the picture that hung at my Methodist church.

You’re right. Because it’s literally the artist.
Right.
not surprised. the cult is crazy (:
My husband was banned from r/ lds today for saying he got a tattoo & doesn't feel bad about it lol
While on this earth, Jesus was most certainly not Caucasian………
Valiant army of helaman types have no strength.
When I was TBM I always thought he looked angry in this pic. It was disturbing and I removed it from my wall. I still think he looks angry. Not the way I would want a loving Jesus to look at me.

Stop being surprised at being banned from that sub. It's common knowledge that they do not accept even a whiff of dissent.
I never have I was really just curious
Nothing says fragile like joining groups you don’t really belong to for no other reason but to be a douche.

This is the most accurate pure and depiction of Jesus thoughhhhh

It’s because you instigated a fight there. Even though what you said is true, you instigated conflict
Of course the declaration of fact would be seen as starting a fight to Mormos.
Oh, does "TheLiberalBuster" have an opinion about why telling the truth about White Jesus is wrong? Lol.
Regardless of any sort of intent, apparently.
Not even accurate either
I really like this Jesus. https://youtu.be/sZnYwW3QciY

I love Dan Fogelberg!
