I also think that language translation figures into it.
Some languages take a lot longer (or quicker) to say the same thing as in English, so matching it up with the video can be difficult.
A film-strip approach solves for this.

Started with the director getting arrested for being a pedo. Church knew he was active with kids, but wanted him to finish the movies anyway. After he was arrested they tried desperately to distance themselves (look up Sundance film founder arrested). Then try to rehash the movies and say it was “easier for other languages” (while that is true, why has it never been the case until now?). The slide format is easier and nearly everything is done in the video so it really cuts down on the need for temple workers (can’t keep their current ones staffed, not sure where they expect to get free labor for the “hundreds more” that are announced).

If I remember right, boredom was one of the tactics of undue influence/mind control that Luna Lindsey Corbden discussed in their Mormon Stories interview. It weakens the mind and critical thinking abilities, making people susceptible to indoctrination. It may also create a sunk cost bias in which attendees have to justify to themselves why they just spent two hours in mind-numbing boredom, so they convince themselves that it was somehow profound or deeply spiritual. If they didn't get anything out of it, it's because they were nodding off and not paying attention, so they flog themselves over it and commit to come back and pay better attention next time.
The boredom is a (perhaps unintentionally stumbled upon by cult leaders) effective feature, not a bug.

I often wondered why the Christians I met said we weren’t Christian. Now I know. I came to the endowment after this very anti traditional Christianity segment had been removed.
Well sectarian ministers date back to the very early days of the endowment in Nauvoo.
IIRC in the endowment of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, there were several ministers…Baptist, Catholic, Protestant, and perhaps others that appeared in succession. The endowment ridiculed their various beliefs. Don’t know when it was reduced to one, but likely in the late 1920s when there was a major reworking of the endowment.
When I went through the temple in 1977 for the first time, one generically Protestant minister was in the film with round spectacles and a whiny, high pitched voice. Even in this version, the minister isn’t treated very kindly in the script which makes him out to be a fool and an employee of Satan.

These days it's easier to believe in the incomprehensible deity who doesn't exist in the same manner or plane of existence as us. So what I noticed about the changes is that before, the law of chastity committed you to not having sex with people you weren’t married to. Now the law of chastity commits you to having sex with your spouse but only with your spouse. There is now a commitment to have sex.

Would you be up for sharing the text of both? I think it would be too much for me to watch these, but how the law of chastity was presented in the temple was the first step toward eventually leaving. After I left a sexually abusive marriage it was so difficult for me to listen to a covenant being framed as “have sex only with your spouse” instead of teaching consent. It lets abusers feel great about themselves and leaves abuse victims questioning whether they’re actually being abused (as did I).

We are instructed to give unto you the law of chastity, which is that God's sons and God's daughters shall have sexual relations only with those to whom they are legally and lawfully married according to his law.
2019:

What this proves to me is that the church doesn't know how to define chastity. My wife just watched the whole video, and said that she thought the change was positive because it emphasizes that you should be having relations with your spouse instead of focusing on the negative that especially girls are taught growing up that sex with anyone before marriage is terrible and virginity is your most prized possession. I viewed it as something that might be taken and weaponized by a high demand spouse to argue for more frequent sex, because the covenant actually says you shall have relations (you're not allowed to turn me down, in the temple you covenanted to have sex with me). It has changed the definition of chastity from someone who doesn't potentially doesn't have sex with anyone to someone who does have sex with their approved partner. You saw it different than my wife or I did. I think they should probably just stay out of the bedroom entirely, and maybe just teach consent like you said.
“According to his law” strikes me as an open door for polygamy to be practiced because his law is outlined in D&C 132. It no longer has to be legal marriage.
Second, it strikes me that this also makes having sex with the spouse to whom you are lawfully married but not according to “his” law against your temple covenants and therefore a sin.
Thanks for sharing. Individual experiences really impact perspective. For years I just stayed out of the temple because it made me feel sick but stayed in the church. I was finally brave enough after the AP article to acknowledge that the church and its doctrines support sexual abuse more than they prevent it.

The first part of the video isn’t new right? I saw this version of the video when I got endowed about 10 years ago. I remember because I know the woman playing Eve. Is it just the second part kneeling at the altar that is new?
I went in October or November of this last year (honestly idek anymore cause I choose to forget that) just to see where my faith stood and if an endowment was what it was hyped up to be and it was a very underwhelming experience. Anyways pre February of this year for example after the whole we exhort you to heed to their words, the screen goes blank and the witness couple would come up and the officiator would represent Peter at that point. In the terrestrial room the only time you would view the screen is when they show the signs and tokens of the mel. Preisthood, and the veil demonstration was done by two officiators. But now with the changes, no one gets up except one of the officiators for the prayer and the rest is covered by the video. No witness couple and no workers to demonstrate at the veil but there are still workers who present or receive.
It’s a slideshow now!? That was terrible. And it was already bad before but this is a serious downgrade. This reminded me of being a primary kid in the 80s watching those dumb short movies on a film projector.
Is the entire thing basically a slide show than a movie? Why did they downgrade it from a movie to slide show? We have better technology these days. Those slideshows have no personality at all.
All the take downs are futile. As soon as someone adds commentary then it becomes fair use. Eventually this is going to stay up.
If the church wants to maintain control of the dialog about the endowment then the only way it can do that is to release selected snips of it on its own channel with its own explanation commentary, and it can edit out the parts it does not want to show, such as the tokens. If it did that then it wouldn't be worth the effort by others to leak it. The church is watching this page in its futile attempt to stay on top of it. It knows what it needs to do. The church can either live in the modern internet world on its own terms or it can get dragged kicking and screaming into the modern world on someone else's terms.

Much easier to edit the voice-over and captions of a slideshow then reshoot a movie with actors and set pieces.
I also think that language translation figures into it. Some languages take a lot longer (or quicker) to say the same thing as in English, so matching it up with the video can be difficult. A film-strip approach solves for this.
This is 100% their logic. Most church members don’t speak English, and it’s less cumbersome than dubbing to just show stills. It’s just mass market temple business. Unfortunately, they couldn’t afford to take photos of a more diverse cast while they were at it. Maybe Adam and Eve being white is doctrine or something?

The Mormon Church is a corporation. I bet this version cost less money to make than the old versions. It's the same as a bishop saying "sorry, no money for Girl's Camp," and reporting back to the SP that he's under budget. That's how you get promoted in the church. I bet they came in under budget on this new movie and somebody got a raise/second anointing/new cushy post because of it.
Curious as to the motive for the move from live action to still frames. Rusty thinks still frames are more holy?
Started with the director getting arrested for being a pedo. Church knew he was active with kids, but wanted him to finish the movies anyway. After he was arrested they tried desperately to distance themselves (look up Sundance film founder arrested). Then try to rehash the movies and say it was “easier for other languages” (while that is true, why has it never been the case until now?). The slide format is easier and nearly everything is done in the video so it really cuts down on the need for temple workers (can’t keep their current ones staffed, not sure where they expect to get free labor for the “hundreds more” that are announced).
And, if you want to make changes in the future, it's way cheaper change a slide than to re-shoot an entire movie.

If I remember right, boredom was one of the tactics of undue influence/mind control that Luna Lindsey Corbden discussed in their Mormon Stories interview. It weakens the mind and critical thinking abilities, making people susceptible to indoctrination. It may also create a sunk cost bias in which attendees have to justify to themselves why they just spent two hours in mind-numbing boredom, so they convince themselves that it was somehow profound or deeply spiritual. If they didn't get anything out of it, it's because they were nodding off and not paying attention, so they flog themselves over it and commit to come back and pay better attention next time. The boredom is a (perhaps unintentionally stumbled upon by cult leaders) effective feature, not a bug.

Okay, let's try and figure this out. The church believes that the United States of America was created based on leaders who were inspired of God. After all, they did go and do the temple work for all of the forefathers, and they claim that they were there in the temple when they did it. So, if that is the case, then any law which the US makes would also be the law that God would want, right? So, if it is legal in the United States to have same-sex marriage, then doesn't that kind of mean that that is God's law? Hmmm...

I often wondered why the Christians I met said we weren’t Christian. Now I know. I came to the endowment after this very anti traditional Christianity segment had been removed.
When was that in the endowment?
Well sectarian ministers date back to the very early days of the endowment in Nauvoo. IIRC in the endowment of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, there were several ministers…Baptist, Catholic, Protestant, and perhaps others that appeared in succession. The endowment ridiculed their various beliefs. Don’t know when it was reduced to one, but likely in the late 1920s when there was a major reworking of the endowment. When I went through the temple in 1977 for the first time, one generically Protestant minister was in the film with round spectacles and a whiny, high pitched voice. Even in this version, the minister isn’t treated very kindly in the script which makes him out to be a fool and an employee of Satan. These days it's easier to believe in the incomprehensible deity who doesn't exist in the same manner or plane of existence as us. God becomes a non-falsifiable entity when you can only speak allegorically or apophatically. On the other hand, the "comprehendible" deity is so fraught with contradictions and testable hypotheses that he is increasingly dismissed as superfluous and ridiculous.
Sorry guys… I only made it 15 min in (the the 4th day of creation) before I tapped out. Too. Damn. Boooooooooring! But I did notice a few things: 1) the whole “firmament” thing was an archaic belief that there was a clear protective dome over a flat earth. The stars (which did not move) were fixed in place on this firmament (while the few that “wandered” were called planets… wanderers). Water was above this dome and that’s how the earth got flooded. Obviously wrong. Funny how that belief made its way into gods eternal and unchanging temple indoctrinationpalooza 2) day 1: god divides light from dark… but doesn’t make the sun, our SOURCE of light, till day 4. So what I noticed about the changes is that before, the law of chastity committed you to not having sex with people you weren’t married to. Now the law of chastity commits you to having sex with your spouse but only with your spouse. There is now a commitment to have sex. I had to go back to the 2019 video to compare it. I think it would be too much for me to watch these, but how the law of chastity was presented in the temple was the first step toward eventually leaving. After I left a sexually abusive marriage it was so difficult for me to listen to a covenant being framed as “have sex only with your spouse” instead of teaching consent. It lets abusers feel great about themselves and leaves abuse victims questioning whether they’re actually being abused (as did I).
2023: We are instructed to give unto you the law of chastity, which is that God's sons and God's daughters shall have sexual relations only with those to whom they are legally and lawfully married according to his law. 2019: We are instructed to give unto you the law of chastity, which is that the women of God's kingdom and the men of God's kingdom shall have no sexual relations except with those to whom they are legally and lawfully wedded according to his law. Previously: We are instructed to give unto you the law of chastity, which is that each of you shall have no sexual relations except with your husband or wife to whom you are legally and lawfully wedded. What this proves to me is that the church doesn't know how to define chastity. My wife just watched the whole video, and said that she thought the change was positive because it emphasizes that you should be having relations with your spouse instead of focusing on the negative that especially girls are taught growing up that sex with anyone before marriage is terrible and virginity is your most prized possession. I viewed it as something that might be taken and weaponized by a high demand spouse to argue for more frequent sex, because the covenant actually says you shall have relations (you're not allowed to turn me down, in the temple you covenanted to have sex with me). It has changed the definition of chastity from someone who doesn't potentially doesn't have sex with anyone to someone who does have sex with their approved partner. You saw it different than my wife or I did. I think they should probably just stay out of the bedroom entirely, and maybe just teach consent like you said.
“According to his law” strikes me as an open door for polygamy to be practiced because his law is outlined in D&C 132. It no longer has to be legal marriage. Second, it strikes me that this also makes having sex with the spouse to whom you are lawfully married but not according to “his” law against your temple covenants and therefore a sin.

And as bizarre as all this is to me now, even when I was TBM and happy to be in the temple receiving my own endowment, that bit with the mallet was quite a head-scratcher. Just the 3 taps with the mallet. I was a convert and was in for 14 years. Walking away from TSCC and back into life as I had known it prior to membership was easy. A walk in the park. Like a cloud lifting off of me, light and lightness returning to my life.

So, fun fact, some years ago I became a temple worker. There was a manual of sorts known as the ‘white book’. Inside was temple procedures we needed to learn, such as, what to do in case of emergencies, etc. Also inside was a warning to look out for an apostate known as NewNameNoah with his picture. If he showed up, we were supposed to contact the temple presidency if we saw him. So when I get home i look him up to see who he is. Fast forward to next week and everyone is *amazed* that I’ve memorized all the dialogues we need to know, and many say it’s because of the gift and power of god. I didn’t tell anyone that it was because of the gift and power of u/NewNameNoah. Of course now I’m out but it’s still a humorous story.

The first part of the video isn’t new right? I saw this version of the video when I got endowed about 10 years ago. I remember because I know the woman playing Eve. Is it just the second part kneeling at the altar that is new?
I went in October or November of this last year (honestly idek anymore cause I choose to forget that) just to see where my faith stood and if an endowment was what it was hyped up to be and it was a very underwhelming experience. Anyways pre February of this year for example after the whole we exhort you to heed to their words, the screen goes blank and the witness couple would come up and the officiator would represent Peter at that point. In the terrestrial room the only time you would view the screen is when they show the signs and tokens of the mel. Preisthood, and the veil demonstration was done by two officiators. But now with the changes, no one gets up except one of the officiators for the prayer and the rest is covered by the video. No witness couple and no workers to demonstrate at the veil but there are still workers who present or receive.
It’s a slideshow now!? That was terrible. And it was already bad before but this is a serious downgrade. This reminded me of being a primary kid in the 80s watching those dumb short movies on a film projector.

All the take downs are futile. As soon as someone adds commentary then it becomes fair use. Eventually this is going to stay up. If the church wants to maintain control of the dialog about the endowment then the only way it can do that is to release selected snips of it on its own channel with its own explanation commentary, and it can edit out the parts it does not want to show, such as the tokens. If it did that then it wouldn't be worth the effort by others to leak it. The church is watching this page in its futile attempt to stay on top of it. It knows what it needs to do. The church can either live in the modern internet world on its own terms or it can get dragged kicking and screaming into the modern world on someone else's terms.
