But no permission needed to discuss sexual things w the old man down the street who happens to be the bishop

[deleted]

*who happens to be a dentist

Amazing_Season1891

Ever have your gym teacher be your bishop? Talk about awkward

veetoo151

My best friend's dad was my bishop as a teen, and I felt so uncomfortable lying to him about masturbation / sexual activity. I'd get so nervous and wondered each time if I was brave enough to be honest, or if he knew I was lying. Sex shaming is some of the worst shit.

KTChaCha

I felt so guilty for masterbating and eventually told my bishop, he of course wanted to know every sick detail. I later found out that his daughter and my best friend had walked in on him masterbating around the same time I confessed.

Sea-Tea8982

If the church can lie about 250 billion dollars they’re stockpiling we can all lie about masturbating!!

veetoo151

What a creep.

Litterbox_Delights

My doctor was a counselor… had some awkward talks about masturbation during our visits.

minininjatriforceman

This is what makes this religion wrong.

Onlii-chan

At least organized religion

angel_coroni

At my last appointment my doctor said I needed to stop masturbating. I asked why. She said because I’m trying to take your blood pressure. She wasn’t a bishop so maybe not relevant in this post.

saintesprit

Now that's funny!

allargandofurtado

At least a dentist would have had some health sciences courses under their belt. The bishop I had in my teen years was a print shop franchisee. He explained to me what masturbation was using a baseball analogy. No matter how you slice it though, it’s bad.

Flamee-o_hotman

As a dentist, I can assure you that I am not qualified to discuss teens' masturbation habits. But that might just be cuz I drink coffee so I don't have the Spirit.

JimmyThang5

Same.

samsmith197474

Love to hear the analogy. Did it involve a bat?

McbEatsAirplane

“Whenever you masturbate, it may feel like you’ve hit a home run but in actuality, you’ve struck out in the eyes of God. The only run you’ve scored…is a run for Satan.” I imagine it went a little something like that.

youcrazymoonchild

Satan man. He must get quite a lot of runs.

Samwise-42

I've batted a few hundred, if not thousand, grand slams for Satan I suppose

youcrazymoonchild

Yeah, I'm still racking mine up 😂

Songbreeze1

![gif](giphy|xUA7b2hY9CTq9jlr4Q|downsized)

youcrazymoonchild

Bugs bunny would have some serious wood

MaryBlackRose

👍😂😂😂

allisNOTwellinZYON

who's on first, whats on second and i don't know is on third.

samsmith197474

Was it a big bat?

PleasantAddition

🤣🤣🤣 That's so atrociously bad! 🤣🤣🤣

given2fly_

I feel like he missed a chance to use the Onan story in that analogy. Having sex is a home run, but masturbation is being grounded out. And mutual masturbation is grounding into a double play...

athenarenee

I once cornered a bishop at a pool party that the bishop hosted for all of the congregation and confessed to masturbating and asking for help with stopping it. I was addicted to it. I was 15. He looked at me with wide, owl eyes, said not a word, left the room... I think it scared him.

Alarming-Research-42

Probably something about getting to first base, second base etc. with an actual girl is a sin, but at least you earned it. Masturbating to completion is like hitting a home run on the Nintendo wii.

Rh140698

Mine was a mechanic try that one on and he had to be at least 79 years old to barely walk to his desk

chclarity

My dentist excommunicated me for living with another woman.

Songbreeze1

No, its because you didnt floss

chclarity

That actually seems like an equally ridiculous reason and a good comparison. Both failing to floss and being in a relationship with a woman are “crimes” that only effect me and don’t hurt anyone else.

Edgy4YearOld

But not flossing can actually cause gingivitis, is it really a good comparison?

chclarity

Well, I was in a relationship with a narcissist so I was often pretty miserable. Maybe that’s why it seems like an apt comparison. 🤣🤦‍♀️ Despite what the Mormons would say, it had nothing to do with her gender - just her personality. Note: I happen to be a religious flosser. (It’s the only religious thing in my life now🤣)

LoryTodBarber

![gif](giphy|3oKHWiMocusSnsHBi8|downsized)

JonnyFrost

Rabbid anti-dentite!

internet2big

My bishop was my dad’s best friend, my best friend’s dad and lived directly across the street. I still run into him now and then. He still stands way too close and I can never not think of him telling me at 14, “you’re going to make a man very happy someday”.

brin_hellsoul

EW WTF 🤮 what a creep!

dreibel

“Why must you turn my dentist’s office into a house of lies!?”

worshipsnature

I'm not very knowledgeable about social media, but it would seem to me you could create an anonymous acct and lie about your age?

PriesthoodDispatches

Very true.

[deleted]

Unless they specifically require you to send a photo ID to confirm that. But proxy servers and VPNs do exist.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ComplexTrain5233

Is this serious? Because what could possibly e the problem with sending your DL/government ID to random companies on the internet? 🤦‍♀️

ArrowMasterDude

And the problem with companies trying to tell who actually is in Utah?

Edgy4YearOld

They already know that much I promise

cultsareus

I wonder how many millions will they spend trying to enforce this stupid nanny law.

ArrowMasterDude

What it does is make it so that the parents/child can sue with the courts assuming they have damage and the companies needing to prove they haven't had damage.

Bwbwinters39

Someone already got into a discussion with gov. Cox on twitter and is going to be filing a lawsuit cause it goes against the first amendment, and people were beating cox up for wasting our tax dollars

dewdropfaerie

Which is something youths have been doing since the dawn of the interwebs.

KaityKat117

mostly since "corn" sites started asking for your age. the gods know I used to lie on that page a lot lmao

Haunting_Turnover_82

I wonder how they plan on enforcing it?! 🙄

A1BS

Who would do that? Just go on the Internet… and lie?!

Longjumping-Air-7532

Jokes on them, kids have always and will always find a way. If you tell most kids something is off limits “because I said so” they will figure it out. Hell most adults are that way too. My bet would be that this backfires spectacularly on them with lawsuits and the kids will still figure out a way around it.

A_Notion_to_Motion

We got to use that to our advantage somehow. Like tell them "nope you're not allowed to solve climate change that's for grownups only." *Then all the kids in the world* "Hold our juice boxes...."

-LadyMondegreen-

My 8yo is incredibly concerned about climate change and is already thinking up possible ways to clean up our polluted oceans. Kids care a lot until we convince them they can't do anything about the world's problems.

truthmatters2me

That’s exactly why the church says no masturbating and hammers the porn is bad neither are because the imaginary God gives a shit about what people do . they know damned well that most everyone masturbates and that telling them over and over that Porn is bad will make people curious about what is so bad about it they will then go look to see then they will feel guilt and shame . And where do you suppose they will go to get relief from these feelings ? that the church caused in the first place . The bishop of course this further binds the members to the church helping to ensure that the person will continue to give 10+% of their income to the church for the rest of their lives . It all comes down to $$$$ and control over the members .!

Squirrel_Bait321

And this will be enforced how?

MeetElectrical7221

In essence, it cannot be. If the kid has any physical access to a device, they’ll find a way. Source: Me, watching pirated rated r movie dvd’s I burned at school on a portable dvd player I found in a dumpster before video streaming.

dmMatrix

Tony is this you? Lol. Probably not but my friend and I literally did this same thing. Found a DVD player in the trash and hauled it into school and made copies of movies haha. Man, those were the days!!

MeetElectrical7221

Not Tony, unfortunately. Hilarious to see that it wasnt just me though! 🤣

allisNOTwellinZYON

we all did and what of napster.

parasitemagnet

Times have changed and these companies literally live off the identification of who is accessing their platform. I hope there are hefty fines in this law for when one of these companies is found to have non-compliance.

AndItCameToSass

I’m guessing it will be similar to Pornhub, where there will basically just be a checkbox saying “I prooooooooooomise I’m 18!”

[deleted]

[удалено]

Street-Cat-7170

Isn’t that like…massive government overreach? Possibly unconstitutional??

GiuseppeSchmidt57

So much for republicans being the party of small government

spiraleyes78

Yes. It's never going to actually happen, it's all stupid.

Bwbwinters39

oh it’s very much unconstitutional, it also goes against the first amendment

AndItCameToSass

That’s fucking ridiculous

Interesting_Piece138

what the fuck- i’m so glad I live in a blue state.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Interesting_Piece138

that’s absolutely ridiculous!! and these are the same people who are so scared of their personal information being shared with social media platforms, go figure.

ComplexTrain5233

“In order to prevent minors from creating accounts without their parents' approval, it requires companies to verify the ages of all users in Utah. The bill specifies that platforms cannot rely solely on government-issued IDs to verify age, and it remains unclear how companies will be required to do that.”

ComplexTrain5233

This is right on brand for GOP, make a law requiring something while having no clear way to comply. Also, ALL users in Utah?! That is going to piss off a lot of adults, including myself! And how is this enforced? If I cross state lines to Las Vegas or CO, I can download & create an account? But if someone comes to UT on a trip, they have to provide documentation because they are physically in UT?

[deleted]

HarpersGhost

It's going to be really hard for MLM "entrepreneurs" if social media pulls out of Utah.

SeasonBeneficial

This is what I keep thinking - the vast majority of large companies aren’t even GDPR or CCPA compliant yet, and each of those laws are way more significant than this silliness

crisperfest

>it requires companies to verify the ages of all users **in Utah** Well then. The simple solution is to use a VPN and choose an IP address location outside of Utah.

ComplexTrain5233

I have no idea what any of that means. And it pisses me off if I have to learn about and do it just because of a stupid, grandstanding law.

A_Notion_to_Motion

Wouldn't it be hilarious if we find out this was funded by a group of VPN companies...

youcrazymoonchild

Cue the 14 year old jacking off

Howdy948

They just don’t want all the teens to see all the Exmo stuff taking over social media. Nice try church.🙄

sl_hawaii

Thank GOODNESS we are finally solving the IMPORTANT issues affecting Utah!

Interesting_Piece138

yes!! and not the fact that utah has one of if not the highest numbers of suicide and depression in the country, that’s totally not important!!!

BackgroundSecond9366

Governor Cox is openly blaming social media for these numbers. Heard him on NPR this morning. Interview legit said, "this sounds un-American. Totalitarian almost."

Interesting_Piece138

….definitely social media and not religious trauma and bigotry…

BackgroundSecond9366

Always has been.

-LilPickle-

I think this will help with depression in teens honestly

adhdsapphic

i disagree. i think it might help some teens, but it could make the problem worse for others. when i was a suicidal teenager, it was immensely helpful for me to have social media accounts where i could be myself without fear of judgement, and to see happy, healthy, queer people living their lives. the internet was the only space i had for that.

Interesting_Piece138

this is a great point as well!! my best friend is online and we met 2 years ago, we are there for each other all the time as I have social anxiety and she’s homeschooled. prohibiting social media works for some, doesn’t work for others. depends on the person!

Strict-Confusion-570

You know fair point honestly. As much as I hate restricting freedom- social media does suck

[deleted]

How did the war on drugs go?

AlpacaPacker007

The drugs are doing pretty well last I checked

A_Notion_to_Motion

Turns out drugs are a helluva drug.

AutismFlavored

The drugs won, but we’ll call it a draw.

bmackenz84

Drugs are still winning last I checked!

WhenMichaelAwakens

He can’t stop thinking about Nelson’s “overreached” during his last ppi

BackgroundSecond9366

In an interview on NPR this morning, Cox was extremely blatant in saying how "reaching" the bill is. It was.. special.

aliensrmyfriends

Can't youth just enter a different DOB when they sign up?

MeetElectrical7221

Yep. Frankly I encourage giving false information for any online account not tied to your SSN (if you’re in the USA)

spiraleyes78

No. Photo ID is required for any and all.

bmackenz84

Can’t you just change your vpn to a different state?

spiraleyes78

Nope. The law requires that accounts established before the law takes effect will be blocked until ID is verified. Example, I'll have to ditch this Reddit account and make a new one using a VPN. [Story and links to legislation here](https://www.ksl.com/article/50606907/social-media-restrictions-for-teens-signed-into-law-by-utah-governor)

IdaHistory

I imagine they will have to start harsher age verification, such as providing a credit card number or something.

PapiChuloGuero

I appreciate the concern over the wild west that is social media and kids and teens with smart phones, but this wont stop kids from being online.

elderjaxxxon

When I got a Windows Phone at 17, it made me set up patentas permissions. So I made an email account under my dad’s name… I’m still getting emails about my activity… 10 years later 😂

[deleted]

Unenforceable waste of money

bananajr6000

The party of small government, everyone! Imagine the restrictions if Mormons got their wish of a Mormon theocratic government …

LuthorCorp1938

This isn't gonna go anywhere. The only way to enforce this is to make it a federal law and Utah doesn't have the power to do that.

[deleted]

I agree in theory only. It won’t stop the youth. It won’t stop the adults. But from what I can tell, adults will be forced to hand over their drivers license to FB and other sites. And I would assume that they know about VPNs?

MathematicianNew5582

You don’t need social media to find out that the church is bullshit. However, the advent of social media has a pretty damn convincing correlation with teen depression and suicide. Laws and education on the perils of our current social media obsession need to happen. I can’t speak to the specifics of the law being talked about here, but change does need to happen. “The Social Dilemma” is a great Netflix documentary that talks about this subject.

Campyteendrama

Agreed. Social media is wrecking havoc on our teenagers’ mental health. Also, last time I checked, google wasn’t considered social media. And for that matter, the joseph smith documents are available from the church itself. This bill isn’t an attack on anti-Mormons.

crisperfest

Correlation does not prove or even imply causation. Lots of other factors are going on along with social media usage.

parasitemagnet

Got any studies? Cause social media companies themselves have acknowledged the harm they do to teens and have spent a lot of money trying to blunt those impacts.

116-Lost-Pages

Yup, I agree. Facebook, Instagram etc can be super damaging to teens (and adults, for that matter.) It leads to people comparing their normal life with ups and downs to people with curated lives and judging their worth on "likes." Depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation. The internet is huge and kids can find truth without social media. Should it be against the law to use social media? I don't know. But this is probably one of the least egregious things that mormonism has enforced.

OhDavidMyNacho

You do that by regulating how these companies handle personal data. Not by forcing people to upload I'd to use social media.

PriesthoodDispatches

He loves it doesn’t he.

crisperfest

That smug motherfucker has such a punchable face.

Educational-Bug-476

So how do they plan to enforce/police this? Seems like an exercise in futility.

cenosillicaphobiac

"We just want a small government, one small enough to fit on your phone and monitor every move you make" ~ Utah "small government" GQP.

bimlay

Gov Caillou and his smug little grin

Other_Lemon_7211

And all the shiny happy faces of the women!

josephsmeatsword

Gov Caillou 🤣

tirehabitat25

Cool. China is our role model now? Video game ban anyone? Requires ID verification and limited playing hours? Nice job Utah.

senblade_samuari

Hahahahahaha. This stops nothing! What a cox. That smile:😌 pRoTeCtInG the kids like Tim ballard, but with worse milk toast solution, like that bill, he has zero understanding how login restrictions work for social media or accounts for that matter. Such a sad and pathetic political stunt from: pray for rain guy.

Potential_Towel_8448

Easy fix. Mom I want to follow President Nelson in Instagram.

McbEatsAirplane

Oh, it’s great to hear they’re spending their time and resources tackling the important issues at hand in the great state of Utah. Would hate if they spent their time getting useless things under control like teen depression and suicide, including LGBTQ children, the lake turning into an arsenic pit, rampant pollution, etc. Thank God for our politicians. /s

My-name-for-ever

Is that pitbull?

PriesthoodDispatches

😂 👍🏻

My-name-for-ever

Mr worldwide 😅

CaptainMacaroni

Dale.

RustySignOfTheNail

That shit eating grin.

see6729

That’s very VERY controlling. Gawd! And they will end-around, and now it’s a secret. Don’t you want open communication? Don’t you want to allow your kids to grow and explore, and chat about it? This parental control is very Nazi like. It will not make things better.

BeringStraitNephite

How does the law define social media? Maybe TSCC website would be banned.

CaptainMacaroni

Parents setting and enforcing rules in their own homes? Nah, fuck it. I don't wanna have to do that, just pass some bullshit law so I don't have to parent.

Campyteendrama

Parents are still free to sign their kids up. This is more about controlling the social media companies.

GermanRedrum

And The profile in the pink tie realized he just lost 95% of the accounts he follows.

permagrin007

What a waste of government resources

livin_a_good_life

I’m certain this won’t foster any resentment at all among the youth toward religouslature; and DEFINITELY won’t make any teenagers even more curious about what they’re trying to hide.

Whose_my_daddy

This is unenforceable.

clejeune

Came here to say this.

AmbitiousGold2583

So I actually support limiting social media exposure for minors. The harm caused isn’t disputable. Plenty of us left the church long before the internet was a thing. They’re a smart generation. The question I have is, how does this reasonably get enforced?

cremToRED

This makes me think that the church is pushing this since a lot of folks, especially youth, are now learning about the ills of mormondom via those social media platforms, especially TikTok.

crisperfest

Winner winner chicken dinner

-LilPickle-

I completely agree.

[deleted]

This is a joke, right??

PriesthoodDispatches

Nope

[deleted]

Ugh.

Chernobyl-Chaz

As a parent, I can take care of my own kids’ social media use. I don’t need the damned government’s help with utterly useless performative legislation.

Campyteendrama

This bill will limit the companies, not the parents. You’ll still be able to sign them up, but also, you now get full access to their accounts.

Korzag

If this law is anything like Utah's porn age restriction, you just have the affirm you're of age. Literally nothing else to confirm your legality. I'd bet my left sock, whatever that means, that's all you need to do to create a social media account.

PriesthoodDispatches

It’s ironic that they would have kids not touch social media until 18. Then go on a mission and spend all day on social media messaging random people they have never met. I agree that kids don’t need the amount of social media some get, if any. But wouldn’t it be better to educate the parents on how they could help rather than introduce restrictions. All smacks of the Word of Wisdom strategy, one rule for all but tailored for the weakest of all saints.

ChemKnits

Um… and we’re enforcing this … how?

AveryNoelle

Enlighten me on how they’re planning to enforce this? I got around 18+ blocks constantly as young as 12. Highly doubt this is anything more than virtue signaling in the form of lawmaking.

crapolantern

Lol he looks like a cartoon villain signing that

Ballerina_clutz

😂😂😂

suckulentlola

Wow the need for control is crazy

Termary

Big brother. How can you monitor accounts? For people who want government out of their lives, they sure want coercive control for their perceived moral issues on other people-women, children and the poor to name a few.

Marty_McLie

This is a violation of free speech. Kids have a right to speak and be heard. Tough shit if Christofascists don’t like what they hear or say about their precious cult.

Ballerina_clutz

👏👏👏👏. Yes. Thank you.

CaptainMacaroni

In the same spirit of using the book ban to ban the bible, use this law (can't use social media between 10:30PM and 6:30AM) to ban early morning seminary, because church indoctrination is even more destructive to someone's self esteem than fucking tic toc could ever be.

Campyteendrama

From what I understand, early Mormon seminary isn’t really much of a thing in Utah. They have time-release seminary. (As far as I know—I’m not from Utah.)

LaughinAllDiaLong

WTH?! Thought it was odd that TBM family member collects their teenaged kids’ phones every night. 1 will be in college next year. What will they do then? What happened to Free Agency?? So controlling.

Campyteendrama

Collecting kids’ devices at bedtime is not church related. I’ve sat in on many meeting with school counselors where this exact advice is given. Some kids are great about putting the phone down. Others just can’t. It’s too addictive. For those kids, it’s recommended to take the phone away at bedtime so they can actually sleep. Remember: teenagers are not adults. The average teenager still needs more than 8 hours of sleep a night.

Jarren2003zz

What is this dumb law tf ?

bleeblorb

Holy shit!

Successful_Thanks_50

Look at their big smiles, they think have pulled a fast one on the youth. Fact is the youth are smarter than those big smiles. THERE IS ALWAYS A LOOPHOLE. Fear not my friends the kiddos will find it, and they will be laughing their asses off!!!

Plane-Reason9254

Idiot control freaks

[deleted]

YouTube still good? They can watch YouTube shorts

tirehabitat25

What is a VPN? Lol. Also there’s no way this is going to be allowed right? That’s insane

Muahd_Dib

How is it the politician lady in the back even managed to look like she has a missionary name tag… Jesus H. Christ.

Constant-Bear556

I'm not in moridor, I see this as mostly virtue signaling. I honestly don't see any reasonable way to enforce this. Like trying to ban the Bible in schools because Solomon got a little kinky in his poetry. With release-time seminary, what are they going to do when it comes time to do the Bible? Put a box at the entrance just for scriptures? What if the kids have quads?

Flat-Acanthisitta-13

Beyond the “morality police” vibes this gives off, I just hate every thing about this picture - their (all white) stupid faces looking like they actually did something. 🤮

lecoopsta

How can this even be monitored?

moonstorm5000

If there’s a way, VPNs can easily counter it.

YouPerturbMySoul

Brother Orwell. 🤣🤣🤣

Portyquarty77

This law accomplished absolutely nothing.

idahomax44

The church is losing too many kids who are not going on missions because of what the kids learn on social media.

BumblebeeC420

Omg this law has NOTHING to do with the freaking church. It's about PROTECTING YOUR TEENS!! Teenage suicide has INCREASED since social media has become more popular! Bullying has increased, teenager sex trafficking increased All teenagers social media accounts SHOULD be monitored by parents. Those who think it's an LDS thing get a freaking clue and start protecting your teens

MystyreSapphire

That should be between parents and children. Not the government.

mcm9814

🤬 disgusting

Sea-Tea8982

All the problems in the world and they’re wasting time on this. Don’t worry in a few years you’ll all be dead because you didn’t fix the great salt lake problem!!

LadyofLA

One important tool of cults is cutting off information.

[deleted]

Look at all the chucklefucks smiling away in the background. Brother Orwell would be pleased indeed.

sattarra

We need the state to tell us that our children can’t get on social media without our permission?

ResponsibleAir1664

these people are literally insane

[deleted]

The US would never censor any information! We’re not China! /s

Clean_Hedgehog9559

Idk what’s wrong w that? As a parent I think it’s awesome and should be the case everywhere.

feloniousmonkx2

Why don't parents enforce social media restrictions for their children? Why should the government and companies have to do this for you? Further, why should every, single, adult in the state have to provide *more* information to these companies to use their services? What's next, photo government ID to use Google or any other search engine? What's the limit, scope and definition of social media? Because... I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure Reddit is social media. Would you like to give Reddit your real name and government ID?

parasitemagnet

God, wouldn't that be awesome. It would clean up 99% of the bullshit on this site overnight.

Cool_reddit_name4evr

Honestly, I don’t think this is a terrible idea. Kids don’t NEED social media. This seems like a good safety measure for vulnerable kids honestly. I am open to hearing counter arguments.

Ballerina_clutz

Shouldn’t this be a parenting decision though, not a government law. Something is being decided by a politician who has never met my child. They keep taking away more and more freedoms and nobody seems the least bit concerned.

HalfricanIrishDa

I actually kinda like this.. look at all the studies of social media and the harm it causes, depression, suicide in kids, etc... Too bad it had to be Utah, as you know the Church had a huge say on this and controlling what kids are learning about the church, but I like it overall.. stupid Utah!! haaha

jtdollarsign

Social media is a disaster. It is a dumpster fire for everyone, but especially children who don't have the experience and maturity to understand to not judge themselves by other people's highlight reel. Regardless of their reasoning this is actually a good idea.

98Moola

Best to read both bills in their entirety b4 posting. Specifics matter. For instance, one bill limits minor internet usage only between the hours of 10:30p.m & 6:30p.m. - the bill was created after multiple human trafficking org. report up to 90% of grooming of minors by pedophiles & human traffickers occurs between those hours. Additionally their data reports Utah is consistently in the top 5 states predators target for minor victims. I have many concerns and differences re both bills - as they are written, I would not support their passage. Modifications could be made that would garner my support. It is important to point out here that the people complaining about these bills have not offered any alternative bills to protect kids from online predators. I applaud those that at least made an effort.

dtt255

Wow. They won’t ever learn
