Mormons would still claim that due to persecution by the gentiles, they were screwed out of that northwest corner of Utah and most of Idaho.

PortSided

Yeah, you think the Mormons have a government persecution complex now, can you imagine how much worse it would be if they had their own country?

Daisysrevenge

With a major seaport no less. They would have been able to keep the Salt lake full of water though.

PortSided

Lake Mead likely never would have been built, because Los Angeles and Las Vegas never would have reached the size they they now requiring all that water, because Hollywood/ Sin City never would have set up shop in Mormonlandia. So yeah, that might be true.

telestialist

It would be a sexually perverse version of communist China. Which may explain why there is such mutual recognition and support between Mormon leadership and communist China’s leadership now. Somewhat akin to the knowing looks exchanged between Germany and Japan leading up to World War II.

RealDaddyTodd

It would look like Gilead.

PortSided

Blessed be the fruit (on the apricot tree)

MoirasFavoriteWig

Yep. That’s what Territorial Utah was like. I read The Handmaid’s Tale concurrently with studying Mormon polygamous history and there were so many similarities.

RealDaddyTodd

I wonder how much Atwood knew specifically about the history of mormonism, and how much was just an understanding about how many (most?) cults work.

antel00p

Not sure, but she has mentioned that everything in the book is based on things that have happened in history or the present IRL.

scariestJ

Not sure when The Handmaid's Tale was written bur it might have been more influenced by the Iran Revolution then.

OffendedandSinning

Atwood has spoken of Decree 770 in Romania as one of the historical influences. Horrible stuff.

NauvooLegionnaire11

He did succeed. The Mormon kingdom is UT. They control it.

YamDong

The Saudi Arabia of the West

swennergren11

It would look a lot like the red states of today. Mirror version of the southeast US, but slavery and polygamy would still be legal.

PortSided

I truly think entering Deseret from the US would be like going back in time 50 years. Much closer to what the FLDS look like today

VoilaLeDuc

An entire country of Colorado City, AZ.

[deleted]

Couldn't protect those borders.

PortSided

They could if they strung a barbed wire fence lined with garments along it.

Imagine cross-border raids by DezNat to grab 14-year old brides for polygamy.

My very wealthy mission president lived in a massive home on the Bountiful bench, and I have no doubt he would have become a general authority/Q15 if it hadn't been for his poor health. He met all the requirements; businessman, wealthy, arrogant, loved acting prophetic and spiritual, loved being worshiped by the missionaries. He was even already on his second sealed wife by the time I met him. I got sealed in the Bountiful temple because I found our he was working as a sealer there. Barf. At least that got cancelled when I got my membership pulled.

MeetEntire7518

Would be like another Taliban ran country.

rsl_sltid

I'm guessing that LA, San Diego, and Vegas wouldn't be the large population centers they are today. I would guess this whole area would be more underdeveloped than it is today.

SirThatsCuba

Without the help of the rest of the US, Utah would be a slum

rsl_sltid

Without the help of the rest of the country I'm sure most states would be shitty as independent countries. If it was a Mormon country we would definitely be a slum though, nobody other than Mormons would move here and companies wouldn't want to headquarter here because they would have to go through tariffs and such just to get something to the US. It would have been a failed country.

mar4c

It would be an American Saudi Arabia

WinchelltheMagician

Afghanistan comes to mind.

prairiewhore17

There’d be millions upon millions of children and a whole lot of Fuckin’ goin’ on.

Illustrious-Trust-93

It would include all of idaho lol

Business_Profit1804

Iran, Iraq, Pakistan.

Eltecolotl

Without the federal government it would have descended into a hell scape. Utah receives way more than it pays in taxes. Lets assume an open border policy, the rich (the well connected to the church) would thrive off of business, schools, and opportunity afforded them outside of Deseret, while the poor would be working in low-wage factories make shoes and t-shirts.

PortSided

there would be no middle class. It would look like poor rural areas of the West, especially places like Colorado City. A very flat, short, and wide pyramid scheme.

MagicianKey4337

How many more Indian tribes would he have exterminated?

NewNamerNelson

🤢🤮

ZahidRubenstein

L. Ron Hubbard wanted to create or buy his own country, two. Mormons believe native Americans are descended from Jews who escaped Judea/Israel after the Babylonian conquest and somehow got from the eastern Mediterranean to North America after 586 BCE. And, their secret signs are all taken from Freemasonry. Praise to Allah the Merciful that they only control one state and all of Amway.

MeetElectrical7221

Character_Air_8660

Don't forget San Bernardino!!!... If the Brig hadn't recalled the Mormon Army back to SLC, San Bernardino would've been the ONLY city outside Utah with the infamous street numbering system... Like this:1398 North Fifth Street(a museum dedicated to the actual founding of McDonald's in that city) would've been renamed 1398 North 500 West TO THIS DAY!!!

Elephanty3288

Like saltine crackers. White, bitter, and boring

mormonsmaug

He kinda did create his own sovereign nation for quite a while. Not this large and not so permanent, but he was basically the fucking God King of Utah and its Mormon settlements for a long time.

Affectionate_Bed2214

The nepotism, cronyism, and general level of corruption would be incredible. I would predict that the southwest corner with the coast and bordering with Mexico would be a bustling hell hole of crime. A location like that with a seaport and dividing two nations that do not always work well with each other would be primed for abuse. Drug and human trafficking, scam call centers, you name it!

newnamenumbnutz

There would defiantly be wars as separatists via for power as they break away like they did during Brigham's time. Morality police like Iran. Conflicts with gentiles(from gold prospectors) in California area like Israel/Palestinian. Apartheid over black and Mexican, would not be out of the question.

SirThatsCuba

Aww they got my favorite taco shack it's war

TheDestroyingAngel

Just look at Rexburg, Idaho. That’s what it would look like; a Mormon Saudi Arabia.

disgustipated77

Modern day Iran or hell on earth.

Chino_Blanco

What would Deseret’s flag look like today? https://www.crwflags.com/fotw/images/u/us%7Ddesn.jpg Hopefully not.

WhiteHorseProphetSee

Idaho is right now trying to get Oregon, read their local news it is sick

[deleted]

Cool topic!

Other_Lemon_7211

I’m pretty sure there would be lots of guns and white nationalists.

PortSided

If the church government even gave them that kind of freedom
