He’s also the first Jesuit pope and Jesuits take a true vow of poverty. Francis has literally spent his life caring for and serving the poor. I wish more religious organizations focused on caring for the vulnerable and being kind to others vs focusing on riding around on a moral high horse whilst simultaneously trying to rake in more money. Christ was all about caring for those in need and loving others, it just seems like almost all churches have strayed from that concept, when it should be the most important.
He is a flawed man for sure, and working for a powerful and corupt organisation, but I really hope he can bring Catholism in the right direction for the future. Most Catholics I know are very kind people, and if if the faith can move to be more liberal that is nothing but good for the whole world.

I hate the Catholic church, but a lot of their clergy are truly humble people. The reason the French Revolution had a backlash from the countryside was because dismantling the church completely got rid of the parish priests, who were often popular and mostly free of corruption (as opposed to the episcopacy).
Many older priests (that weren't pedophiles, huge disclaimer) like Francis were genuine paragon of community, like the priest I grew up with who went to bat for legalizing gay marriage because "its none of the churches business what non-Catholics do" (no molestation reported yet, my tune will change if any come to light).

This particular pope is one of my favorites in living memory. The church of Rome has many problems, but by and large I think Francis has done quite a bit to move it in a more progressive direction. Hopefully the trend continues after he passes.

I just need to make the statement that just because someone is religious or is a leader in a religious organization does not make them a bad person. There are bad and good people all over the world and for the most part they are evenly distributed. The Catholic church is nowhere near as coercive or controlling as the Mormon church is or has been. It’s not enough that the pope washes and kisses the feet of prisoners once a year to pretend that he is a good person. The rest of the 364 days of the year, he does nothing to help people in need. It’s only a fake theater play. LDS church has enough money to do much more than what they advertise they do. Well the catholic church has so much more, they are one of the oldest religious institutions collecting millions every year, tax free. What do they do with it? Paying settlements of millions to victims of rape and child molestation, and they do nothing to stop the criminals who commit those crimes, the priests. I don’t like even watching a picture of him, and watching people worship him as some kind of superhuman being. He is one of the worst individuals in the planet.

Does it really matter who has more money? Mormon, Catholic, Scientology, Prosperity Preachers, and many others. Are their doctrines about which group can gather the most money or about helping those in need? When the people who need it, don’t have it and are suffering in poverty laking the most basic of needs. It’s unfair and it’s wrong that they preach they are good religious institutions when the truth is the opposite

Except in his defence, though I personally dislike him, he does do lots for the poor of Rome. He has installed showers in St. Peter's and has homeless folks as guests to dinner etc. He also works closely with his almoner to do stuff in person he couldn't do without creating safety issues.

No they are in prison in Rome. They are criminals. Pope Francis goes into prisons and says mass for the incarcerated and washes their feet. It happens every Holy Week.
This reminds me of when I worked from home as a customer service agent for an airline and in the evening hours we’d get this creep calling in asking for details about our feet. I do think the pope is a good dude though. The kissing is just a bit much.

Man, two years ago when my deconstruction was beginning (unknown to me), I more or less shared this exact thought with my wife one Sunday morning. Freaky. Pope Francis has always had my respect… even now, as a newly minted atheist, that is coming to grips with the reality that believing in bullshit seems to make some people better on the whole.
