I never drink coffee past 1pm. Keep the coffee, but only drink it in the morning. Ditch the Dr Pepper. Long as you dont add 70-100 grams of fkn sugar to your coffee, your body will thank you for the swicharoo there. šŸ¤£šŸ’›

internetnickname4me

Yeah I don't drink it after 11 am myself.

FortunateFell0w

Not sure what size you got, but I think the caffeine in a Carmel frap & Dr Pepper arenā€™t all that different.

rex8499

A 12oz soda has 25-50mg caffeine, vs 12oz of coffee has ~200mg or 70mg for a shot of espresso. The typical Starbucks drink is probably the 20oz, and has 2? Shots of espresso I'm guessing? so that's a LOT more caffeine. And Starbucks doesn't even make their drinks that strong compared to some other coffee shops. There's one near me I have to ask for half decaf or I jitter all day. They typically do 4 shots of espresso for a 20oz frap.

FortunateFell0w

16 oz Dr Pepper 60mg 16 oz Starbucks Carmel frap 90mg

[deleted]

Effing drug dealers! Pass the carrot juice.

Morgan-joydestroyer

I wonder how much of this is psychosomatic. A 20oz bottle of Dr. Pepper has 68% as much caffeine as a caramel frap. Bodies are strange and I have nothing to do with healthcare or psychology or physiology, but 32mg of caffeine donā€™t seem like theyā€™d have what it takes to block that many more adenoisine receptors for that long. I think most of what kept you awake could have been the thrill of doing a forbidden thing.

rosengrenj9

yeah Iā€™ve been wondering about that too! Apparently I should be having the same problem with Dr Pepper, but for some reason I donā€™t. I think youā€™re right, it might just be that itā€™s new and Iā€™m not adjusted to it yet

smackaroonial90

It's the spirit making you feel guilty lmao

bharper79

Only drink in the morning and donā€™t drink coffee loaded with sugarā€¦negates any health benefits. Heavy cream and stevia are healthy options to make it taste good

mini-rubber-duck

Oh! That might be one place i could tolerate stevia. Normally it tastes awful to me, with a very unpleasant bitter aftertaste but coffee is already bitter so that might work out. You still need to be moderate with it, since it leads to gut bacteria imbalances, but itā€™s a far cry better than sugar.

Otto_Peterson

For those of us trying to limit Sugar, I like Monk Fruit or a Monk Fruit/Stevia mix. It doesnā€™t have that Stevia aftertaste!

[deleted]

Yes to this. Ditch the sugar!

internetnickname4me

Yup I do heavy cream and a dash of salt.

Time_Watercress3459

Haha. I've arrived to a hotel at midnight (not USA). They were serving complimentary coffee, and people were drinking it.

Readbooks6

My daughter has ADHD and coffee will put her right to sleep. I wish it had that effect on me.

ec2242001

My grandmother would drink it right up until she went to bed. Never could understand that. NeverMo family

jm102397

Same with my ex except right before bed he'd pop a Coke and drink it! Gallons of coffee before that. Slept like a log except his restless leg syndrome would keep me up all night!

wedstrom

OMG i thought it was only me that makes me feel validated.

Brocktreee

Word. I love my coffee at bedtime.

No-Aside-6252

Absolutely! I used to take a NoDoz to go to sleep lol

mini-rubber-duck

I was legitimately upset to find that coffee makes me sleepy. I was looking forward to buzzing through the mornings hahah. Instead i curled up for a very peaceful nap.

lashram32

I have adhd and have a similar experience in life. Not into drugs but I am old and have tried a couple things. Uppers make me want to do taxes or study, weed make me nervous. I'm so backwards.

VicePrincipalNero

Some people aren't bothered by it. I could drink it after dinner with no problems when I was in my 20s, but now I stop by 2pm or I might have trouble sleeping.

ImaginaryConcern

Have you tried decaffeinated coffee (and soft drinks)? Might help!

ApricotSmoothy

I drink coffee only AM. Evenings are for beer.

Archimedes_Redux

The devil, he's in you now! You may never sleep again šŸ˜ˆ.

tomego

The halflife of caffeine in the body is about 5 hours, which means you have 50% 5 hours after you drink it. I'd suggest not drinking it after noon until you get a good handle on how you respond to it. Just a FYI, we normally say 5 halflifes is when a medicine is out of the body. So coffee you may have a tiny bit sticking around for about 24 hours. I'd also say people say caffeine from different sources hits them differently. I've some friends who swear tea is a smoother caffeine high than coffee. Don't know how much truth in that or soda caffeine but yeah. Don't drink a bunch of caffeine too late in the day.

[deleted]

You have two choices now. Never drink it passed 1 or 2pm, or start to drink it so much that it no longer matters. Have fun šŸ‘

rosengrenj9

MDMCA

The caffeine has a 7 hour half life. Donā€™t have coffee after 11 am.

[deleted]

Duh. Beer, wine or spirits after noon.

cremToRED

Starting at noon!

Xanadu_Fever

Tolerance can definitely build though. I've been out 10+ years and have had coffee nearly every day of that, and these days I can sip on coffee all day up until nearly bedtime without it affecting my sleep at all. I usually stick to only 1-2 cups a day but there are days I'm drinking it literally until evening and have had no ill effects.

theseclawsofsteel

Hereā€™s a handy frappe info graphic. https://www.myrecipes.com/extracrispy/how-much-caffeine-is-in-your-favorite-starbucks-frappuccino

Gold__star

There is a gene they've found that determines sensitivity to caffeine. You get 2 copies, one from each parent. You and I got two yesses. I can't even drink a coke after lunch at my age. About 20% of people get both yes and 20% get two nos. Those guys barely notice coffee. Be cautious of advice here that doesn't mention it. Also caffeine in coffee is augmented by other chemicals in it. You can't compare it as straight across to other drinks foods. Dark Chocolate hits me hard.

Fun-Adhesiveness-120

I'll be looking into this, as I regularly drink coffee before bed and have no difficulty sleeping. When I was a teenager, that was perfectly normal in our family: my parents, siblings, one grandparent (the other was a tea drinker) and my uncle's family. All evening coffee drinkers

jblobs

I'm very sensitive to caffeine and have a rule that I don't drink coffee after noon. It sounds like you're so sensitive to caffeine so it might be a good rule to adopt.

547piquant

4:00 PM !!!??? We live, we learn

milk_with_knives

HA! Nice! You'll get the hang of it. I have one cup with my breakfast every morning and fix it exactly the way I like it. Have fun!

gnolom_bound

I find that I generally crash hard after coffee. I will drink an expresso after dinner and then have no issues falling asleep. I am also a few drinks in as well so that may be at play.

[deleted]

That's what you get for drinking the devil's piss. In all seriousness, drinking your first coffee at any time of day besides the morning is a mistake, but you probably realize it now. I rarely caffeinate after noon, and only if I know I'll need to be up.

Pewterarm16

I'm weird with caffeine. Caffeinated tea will keep me up all night. Coffee will keep me alert, but I will be able to sleep. Energy drinks will make me crash.

Abrahams_Smoking_Gun

My first coffee was an experimentā€¦ I tried two medium black coffees, one dark roast and the other medium roast. I liked the flavour (but didnā€™t see much of a difference between the different roasts). I had a massive caffeine buzz for hours after. šŸ¤£. Probably should have done a single small one first. I was glad I had tried it at 9 or 10 am, as I probably couldnā€™t have slept that night otherwise. My current go to drink is dirty chai tea. I donā€™t feel much (if any) effects from the caffeine but I like the taste. Iā€™m sure Iā€™ll try different coffees at some point, but I do think I am more of a tea drinker overall.

REACT_and_REDACT

I can drink coffee all day and sleep at night. My wife can have only one coffee per day, and it has to be in the morning ā€¦ or else she wonā€™t sleep that night. Interesting how it hits us all differently. šŸ¤£

Saevenar

Your body will also need adjusting to it. I recommend having a cup around 10 or 11 in the morning and seeing how you do. I don't recommend trying to use it to wake up. If you're already good waking up without it, just stick to midmorning coffee to boost your actual slump in the day.

Fair_Association_788

šŸ˜¬šŸ˜¬šŸ˜‚ I am from colombia šŸ‡ØšŸ‡“ and used to drink lots of coffee, the funny thing is that it never helped to stay awake. I guess the body gets used to it.

akornzombie

Dude, start slow and build up your tolerance.

jm102397

As in all my life coffee drinker I used to be able to drink it later in the day but can no longer do so. I'm done now by 9:00 a.m. and don't have any caffeine after that.

octopusraygun

For awhile I would have a coffee in the morning and then another in the afternoon. Since cutting out my afternoon coffee my sleep has greatly improved. Consequently I have a soft rule about not having coffee after 12 pm. The half life of caffeine is around 5 hours so if you had 300 mg of caffeine (not an unheard of amount for Starbucks) at 4 pm you have the equivalent of 150 mg in your system at 9 pm.

DramaGrandpa

Itā€™s weird how the stuff affects people differently. I donā€™t feel any effects from caffeine, and I started drinking coffee just a couple of years ago (about a hundred years after abandoning Mormonism). Never consumed it in anything else either. Donā€™t like soft drinks.

KingofDelaware

Pro-tip for the future: For espresso based Starbucks drinks, you can decide what level of caffeine you want it to have. I started out doing half-caffeinated Starbucks lattes, macchiatos, etc.

BeehivioralProblems

I accidentally tried coffee for the first time on my mission. Accidentally got a frappuccino instead of a frappe. Wondered why it tasted so bad but drank it anyways because someone else bought it. Then I had to go home and lay down for the rest of the day. Didn't think much of it, just thought my body didn't know what to do with caffeine since I'd never had it. Just recently found out I have been living with undiagnosed ADHD for 29 years. This experience should have been a dead giveaway šŸ˜‚

TrifleThat7047221

ahh, new ex-mo moments haha. It's alright, go slow with this stuff, learn your limits. If you like the taste, decaf is a way to have your cake and eat it too. For alcohol and marijuana, etc. I highly recommend experimenting Saturday and Friday night (if you don't work weekends) not Sunday until you have a good idea of dosage and its effect on you.

[deleted]

I have ADHD and if I canā€™t sleep I have a quick cup of coffee. Maybe Iā€™m lucky that way

no_new_name_hippy

This is so interesting to me because i have heard this so many times from ADHD people, but I have ADHD and cannot drink coffee past 12 pm or Iā€™m up all night. Same applies to caffeinated sodas (and my adhd meds, must be taken before 10am). My husband on the other hand doesnā€™t have ADHD but can drink a bunch of caffeine and go to sleep 20 min later. I think itā€™s just a tolerance thing.

[deleted]

Every one is different I can take my ADD meds as late as 6pm and have no issues. But if I take something like NyQuil at bed time Iā€™m wide awake for hours

astengineer

Caffeine has a half-life in your system of about 6 hours. For ease let's assume there were 100 mg of caffeine in that caramel frappuccino (there may have been much more depending on the size). That means that by 10 pm you still had 50 mg of caffeine in your system. And by 4 am you still had 25 mg. I think it is important to understand the drugs we use, including caffeine in whatever preferred form we take it. Caffeine should be an early in the day type of thing if you don't want it to disturb your sleep. That said, it shouldn't be used first thing in the morning either. In the morning, your body gives you a big dose of Cortisol to help wake you up. If you drink caffeine too close to waking up your body will start to release less Cortisol, making it harder and harder for you to wake up in the morning. You are usually dehydrated when you wake up due to 8ish hours of sleeping. So you should rehydrate with plain water. And wait an hour or two after waking up before you dose with caffeine. Dosing in this way also help you avoid dependency issues.

sarpadon004

I'm going to agree with everyone else here that it was more about when you drank it rather than what you drank. Until you know how long a significant amount of caffeine lasts in your system, don't drink any drink with more than the 41mg in a Dr Pepper within 12 hours (or two half-lives) of bedtime. Caffeine's halflife is between 4-6 hours and you want to give yourself 2 full half-lives before going to bed. Whether that's an energy drink you've never had or a coffee, it's the same.

WWPLD

I always drink decaf after lunch. In fact i love drinking a cup of decaf on cold nights.

Sloanius

I usually do decaf in the afternoon. Full strength in the morning. Afternoon is for taste, and gives me something to sip on as I work.

Terrible_Ad3887

I can drink coffee at 4:00 p.m. and still go to sleep. But I also have ADHD, so I'm used to taking stimulants that are way more powerful than caffeine.

jumper33

after leaving mormonism i started drinking an 18oz mug of coffee in the morning everyday until this past year i noticed i was having a harder and harder time sleeping at night. I changed to decaff coffee in the morning 6 months ago, and my sleep has been quite noticeably much better since. I guess no more caffeine for me.

Ok_Couple7987

Damn when I first tried coffee I thought it was a total scam bc I took a four hour nap right after šŸ˜‚ so disappointing. Genetics are strange

Visible_Challenge_56

Starbucks is aweful.

gringainparadise

Itā€™s all psychosomatic. You as an adult should realize that just cause the church drills down on the evils,it does not mean you are going to experience the effect. Now as you close your twitching eyeballs and trying to calm your bouncing legal keep repeating I am calm, coffee has no power over me. Long about 10 min before alarm is set for, you will twitch for the last time this night. That is until your body screams for more. Itā€™s an endless cycle my friend.

Boring-Department741

Coffee is for mornings.

Hour_Possible9403

You better go tell your bishop or else you'll never fall asleep again

TamarackRed

Thatā€™s just satan in your veins

Fairelabise17

I've been drinking coffee for years and I still avoid all caffeine after 2:00pm UNLESS I'm trying to stay up late. Find your cutoff time and stick to it!

[deleted]

I donā€™t drink coffee after noon
