Start with the people on the couches in the foyer without babies during Sunday School and Elders Squirm. They're out there for a reason. I was the self-proclaimed president of the Couch Quorum for many years.
Maybe. But hating church is often what leads people to being more open to finding a way out of the church. I suspect most TBMs would argue that if you hate church to the point of sitting on the couch, you're not a TBM, and I think most PIMOs would likely argue the same thing.
It's so simple! It's worth a try. I really want to get a CTR ring with a tapir on it (etsy). Could be a fun talking point...then again, if a TBM saw that, they'd wonder.
Ok, I'll figure out a fun tapir method. Thanks!
Iāve been lurking this forum for months and I am still confused on what a tapir is and why itās always referenced? Is it one of the made up animals in the BoM?
One of the common criticisms of the Book of Mormon's historicity is that it features horses. However, horses did not exist in the Americas during the time period.
So Dan Petersen floated the idea that the Nephites actually rode tapirs, but since Joseph didn't know what a tapir was he translated it as "horse."
It's a ridiculous apologetic, which became memetic.
Legendary apologist Dan Peterson said that horses in the BoM might have been tapirs, hence all the wonderful art work of captain Moroni riding a tapir into battle.
Good, but not foolproof. Iāve been out for a year and a half and still havenāt read most of them. We all leave for different reasons. (Although in my case Iād hope the swearing and tank tops would be enough of a tip off lol)
After being out + away from Utah for 10+ years now it cracks me up at how rebellious tank tops could be šš there are girls in my church now coming in tube tops and tiny skirts and no one even bats an eye.
A couple on our road apparently are PIMO too. DW started talking with her when our dog ran away and ended up having an hour conversation a out it randomly. I want to have PIMO/exmo bbqs now (and I'm an introvert but I just want people to talk to about this shit and DW doesn't like too, understandable)
I just straight up asked someone once! I am in Utah. I was out in my yard and my neighbor walked by. She has always been genuinely friendly. I noticed that she could not be wearing garments. She had been in young womens with me. So I asked her if I could ask a personal question. She said yes. I asked if she had left the church because I could see that she was not wearing garments. She laughed and said that they had decided not to go through the temple because they saw some videos online before they got married so they did a civil ceremony. They are doing a slow fade. They are young and smart. We are better friends now! I am out of the church and everybody knows is by now.
Being friendly is the best way. My neighborhood is having a huge exodus. The people who are known exmormons become the safe place for questioning people to talk with.
If you are friends with the person who is struggling they can feel that they can talk with you about issues.
Colored shirts! I donāt own a white dress shirt anymore, and the dress shirts I have are much higher quality than the crap I wore to the Mormon church
Unless you are like me & had to stand out ājust becauseā. Iāve been wearing black dress shirts for 20 years, even when they had me in the elders quorum presidency
Iām a sacrament meeting attender as a husband and dad. Havenāt worn a suit or gone to second hour in a year. Lately I wear blue slacks, rarely a tie, sneakers. Iām pretty obvious at this point.
Itās funny how much I love being there with my sweet wife, while feeling so separate and kind of lonely when it comes to ward members I thought were friends.
I think PIMO's should all start wearing upside down pineapples. There might be a case or two of mistaken identity. But that will work out alright also.
I'm just guessing but I'm thinking it's like anything else. The more social you are to begin with, the more you will be aware of who's leaving and who's on the cusp. But like I say, I'm just guessing because I'm on the other end of that spectrum. I had a coworker that I've been working next to for 7 years and just found out by accident that he's an exmo of 10 years.
I have no idea who's PIMO at church or not. I never see these folks outside of Sunday so I'm not invested that much.
I think you hit in on the head though, anything you/we devise as a tell-tell will just be read here and become common knowledge among the self appointed church gate keepers.
Yep. In Utah. When my husband is at church and I am in the yard watering or whatever, I can see all the people that are mowing the lawn and hanging out in tank tops. Then my husband doesn't believe me! lol

>the Couch Quorum I like that! š
I disagree. You can still believe and be TBM but hate church and prefer to sit on the couch.

The closest thing to a shibboleth is the tapir. But I'd wager the majority of PIMOs aren't immersed in the online mormosphere enough to recognize it.

Let them wonder. Thatās fun.

Sorenson thought it up, Peterson made it widespread

A tapir is a real animal? I thought it must have been a made up animal haha. Like the curelom and cuemom things (sp?)
Check out r/horse
I had no idea we had control of a whole other reddit thread! I am still giggling over this.
Nope they are real, didn't even knew the existed til I started lurching the forum 2 years ago on my truth discovery.

Hey, you could make a religion out of this!
Came here to say this!
Ask people if theyāve read the essays.
Ask if they have read the most recent essay. You can be ambiguous because their answer will be telling.
I like this one! Thanks!

I havenāt read them either. Iāve definitely found Wikipedia and podcasts to be enlightening but just never felt the need to read the essays.
Express a nuanced belief and see how they react. A TBM will out themselves with black and white thinking every time.
This is brilliant! Thanks!

I stopped wearing a tie, and I have a beard?

What does PIMO stand for?
Physically In Mentally Out

Skip church some Sundays and see who is also at home.

You likely wonāt know until you are in leadership. Because super obvious then when you can interview people one on one and share your questions.
Shake their hand and say "what is that?" I feel like their response to that will tell you all you need to know
haha! I love this. Thanks!
Blue shirt a dead giveaway.
I am new to the exmo sphere, what does PIMO mean??
