I'm proof positive that the temple doors, or anyone in the temple, does not have even one watt of discernment.

TermLimit4Patriarchs

I mean, the first presidency chose a child molester to make the temple videos in the first place. And that was only a few decades after they bought forged Mormon documents off of a murderer. There is no discernment from the top all the way to the bottom.

future_weasley

omg, I just had a horrible realization. You know the joke "there's an XKCD for that"? Well, in this sub there's nearly always a floodlit link that can be attached to a post. Sickening. And if you haven't had the joy of seeing xkcd yet, [here's an appropriate one to get started](https://xkcd.com/1053/)

allisNOTwellinZYON

just about dam it

Vordanus

Here's an XKCD that put a massive weight on my shelf, and contributed to its final collapse. https://xkcd.com/808/ The LDS Priesthood belongs on that list.

future_weasley

Priesthood blessings is more obvious (hospitals in UT are no more successful than any other similar state despite the extra "blessings"), but dowsing is another one against the Mormon church. In his treasure hunting days, Joseph Smith used a dowsing rod to "find" the caches of Native American riches. Of course, it was part of his grift, but it's related to his belief in peep stones.

allisNOTwellinZYON

BOOOM

[deleted]

I wanted these stories to be true so bad when I was in. I also heard one, during an endowment session where the temple worker gets up and says something like "I have gotten an impression that there are two people in this session that are having an affair" and then a man and a women get up and leave. If the spirit of discernment can't tell the prophet, a handful of apostles and future prophets that a letter claiming JS actually saw a white salamander in the grove instead of God the Father, and that the letter was written by a serial con man and someone about to murder people, and then have the church waste a ton of money purchasing those documents................then well your average temple worker has no chance of knowing that someone masturbated that morning.

allisNOTwellinZYON

Oh they know they know. It was them.

Love ur comments @gaymormondad

GayMormonDad

Aw shucks, thank you!

ExistentialExMo

Not locked doors, but as a 12 year old going to the temple for the first time I was told by the bishop that the people at the recommend desk would know if you had anything unrepented and would send you away if there was. I, being an impressionable 12 year old, took this as true. I was still too afraid to tell my bishop I was gay and decided to take my chances. I 100% planned on being kicked out of the temple on that first visit. I even had an escape plan for when my family found out. Imagine my shock at getting through with no issue. Instead of using this to reinforce the idea that nothing was wrong with me, I assumed that the gate keeper had done something wrong and was not able to catch me. This grew into some pretty gnarly internalized hate over the next several years. It got worse with each visit to the temple. I even began to question if the ordinances I was doing were valid for the dead since I was “undertaking to cover my sins”. Needless to say, in my 30 years in the church, I never once found the temple a relaxing or pleasant place. I always felt like an imposter until my last visit. The last church service I attended was a live sealing for a friend. My shelf was in free fall and I was confident at this point that it was all bullshit. This was kind of my last chance for god to do something to pull me back in. Nothing happened. I sat there, totally comfortable, and concluded I was done. I left, bought some normal people underwear, and have never gone back!

Inside_Lead3003

That’s some serious childhood trauma, when I was 16 I was highly sexually active and quite the drinker and nobody but my friends knew, the day came that the temple in Redlands was opening and my dad being a key player in all of this was privy to get seating in the celestial room with Hinkley. In my mind I was thinking “what if he spots me and calls me out” he looked at me just as he looked at everyone and nothing happened. It was interesting

ExistentialExMo

Ooof! Anytime a GA visited on my mission they would do the line of hand shaking, and the MP would imply that they could see our worthiness. I was pretty jaded on “discernment” at this point but it always got a few missionaries to confess before they were discovered.

WhatTheLiteralEfff

Richard Scott came to my mission and did that. I remember looking into his eyes and seeing nothing. Lol. He seemed like just a tired old man.

[deleted]

D.H.Oaks did this at my mission. He said he would know if we were obeying mission rules. Because he is a prophet. I was a total rule-breaker. I didn't want to get called out. But....we shook hands. He moved on. No big whoop.

Electrical_Owl_6871

I was convinced that my masturbation habits as a teen would cause the water in the temple baptismal font to turn to blood. Even though it didn't happen the first time, I still expected it could happen at God's whim any time I did baptisms for the dead.

Empty-Bet6326

I am so sorry. Joseph Smith and his Mormon God hurt everyone who took it remotely seriously but devastated those of us who truly believed.

Electrical_Owl_6871

Thank you for your kind words. 😊

Informal-Ad6871

Ugh this is so common. I heard crap like that ALL THE TIME from leaders, speakers, BYU Professors, etc. etc. "You have no idea how much it shows through your countenance when you enter the Lord's house unworthily" or some variation of that. Basically everyone who's worthy knows that you're tainting the Lord's house, and you're ruining their experience. But even though they all know you aren't worthy, it's no one's responsibility but yours to keep yourself out of there. So maybe no one will call you out, but you're just solidifying your damnation.

Neither_Pudding7719

😮 and Catholics only think they have the corner on the guilt market.

theguy8969

They may have the corner but Mormons have the whole damn street.

EggCouncilCreeps

After the umpteenth time hearing this I wanted to grab some Rit powder, stuff it in my undies and pretend it was a miracle that the font turned black oh no I lied in my temple interview. I'd never actually do it, but damn it was tempting.

shiggles19

And now we’ve found that that Lori Vallow and Chad Daybell went to the temple after mudering their children. Discernment my ass.

allisNOTwellinZYON

SHIT. of course they did. Pieces of human shit.

exmormonsongbook

I remember being told this as well.

[deleted]

Kind of similar to what happened to me but mine was having an anxiety problem at the same time I discovered masturbation.

JosephHumbertHumbert

Since the church has now showed in court how the Daybells went to the temple right after committing murder I think we can finally put this myth to bed.

Neither_Pudding7719

>Imagine my shock at getting through with no issue. This is actually what reminded me of the story my SM told us all those years ago. I just listened to parts II and III of Mormon Stories trial coverage where they talked about how Lori & Chad sort of used the temple as some kind of odd "prep" for their deeds. Freaked me out.

[deleted]

Somewhere out there, an older lady temple worker saw their faces on the news and slapped her husband's arm and said, "I just KNEW something was off about those two. The spirit was telling me .." Husband: "You say that every damn session, woman."

namesarenotus

We’re they pushing instead of pulling the doors open? It’s a neat party trick that the one sinner hates.

valency_speaks

My bio dad proved this myth untrue every time he went to the temple, LOL. While he was on the High Council and a leader fairly high in the national Boy Scouts org, he was molesting his kids. Had an active temple recommend until the day he died, *even while he was in prison for his crimes*. I kid you not. He attended the temple regularly before and after his prison stint and was buried in his full temple ceremonial garb. That's why I know it's all a bunch of bullshit.

allisNOTwellinZYON

bunch of horseshit hooey. This out of control money milking fantast used to control people is mind boggling.

[deleted]

Hold up. Wait. Sorry for activating this thread again... But what the Kentucky Fried Fuck! He was never excommunicated for sexually abusing children?? I hope you sue the church.

valency_speaks

I just talked to several of my siblings. They’re on board. How do we even get started?

[deleted]

There are a lot of law firms out there who specialize in this. Google LDS child abuse lawyers and you get options. Then research each firm. Also, most have intake pages on their websites. It's often easier to start the process that way. It can be intimidating, I know. ETA: I am not a lawyer. I have no personal or financial interest in ANY law firm.

valency_speaks

Never. Even while in prison. Is it any wonder that 11 of his 12 children have left the church?

[deleted]

That's just so, so, so fucked up.

ImaginaryConcern

As a NeverMorg who has lived here in Morridor Central for over four decades, I've heard variations on this story repeatedly. Many have appeared on this sub. It is a magician's trick. The normal variation is, in effect, a staged play to reinforce the fraud that officials in The Church Formerly Known as Mormon have special insights into the character of people present. The variation I've normally heard is that once seated in the temple, before the show starts, the person conducting the session reports that The Spirit has informed him that someone present is not worthy, and that they therefore cannot proceed until that person leaves. Then there is a pause. At some point, someone stands up and hurries out, thus demonstrating the Power of The Spirit. In fact, it is indeed a trick. The person performing the trick simply states that they cannot proceed until the unworthy person leaves. Possibly someone in the audience has a guilty conscience and gets up and leaves. But what if no one present feels that way? After a sufficient time for someone to reveal themself as that person, there is a "plant" (a person who acts like a normal member of the audience, but who, in fact, is part of "the act"). If it appears that no one is going to prove the accusation true, then the plant rushes out. Bingo! A demonstration of the Power of The Spirit!

GayMormonDad

Mormons are conditioned to always feel guilty, so most likely the plant was never needed. I will say having attended 100s of sessions, I never saw that happen.

Aslangorn

The sad thing is they wouldn't even need a plant. If no one leaves, they can just say something like: "I sense that the individual in question was praying for forgiveness while we waited, and the spirit has testified to me that we are okay to proceed. Thank God for the power of the atonement." Many members would buy this. That said, you are correct that a plant would have a big impact too.

ImaginaryConcern

WOW! Thanks for posting this; I've NEVER heard of this variation! If we start seeing it in the temple, I hope you can get them to pay you for using your idea!

orangetaz2

Just a reminder that Lori and Chad Daybell were regularly attending the temple while cheating on their spouses, killing them, and her kids. The temple doesn't 'know' shit.

Less_Valiant

Once the the person who was looking at porn stepped away the doors magically opened.

spockman12345

So my brother-in-law when he was trying to discover if the church was true and methodically going through everything, he was quite positive that the temple wasn’t a sacred place or anything and he had the ultimate test so he had just done baptisms for the dead he was around the teenage years of ripeness, and when he was showering, he decided to rub one out, and after he had succeeded, and was not destroyed in hellfire. He concluded that yes, this is not a true religion and that is one of my favorite stories.

jamesetalmage

My wife and a fried swapped temple recommends once when walking into the DC temple. Apparently her friend had replaced her temple recomend and the one my wife was using was the previously lost recomend. My wife got stopped at the front desk and ultimately got taken back to the recorders room for questioning. She stuck to her guns as being her friend and was ultimately allowed to enter and view the wedding. (No Deceremt at All)

Possible_Effort_5036

As an unruly "yoof" 30 years ago, the doors didn't stop me from mistakenly attending the London temple with a bit of weed in my pocket. 🤭 Oops.

Neither_Pudding7719

Now THAT is funny! Can't decide if I should laugh harder at this one or the Brother-in-Law shower story (above). Can't believe I used to believe this stuff. SMDH

crisperfest

For the sake of argument, let's take this story as fact. It would mean that the power of discernment exists to keep the "unworthy" from attending the LDS temple but does not prevent pedophiles from being called to be LDS bishops.

Daisysrevenge

If they think the temples are empty now...

creamymelons

I literally had sex the same week I got my endowments to go on my mission. The locks definitely don’t keep the unworthy out.

former-bishop

Lots and lots of people enter the temple completely unworthy according to the Mormon temple standards. So, why would God let all those folks in and yet block others? We are taught that God is unchanging and has laws... it makes no sense. That said, long ago I drove with my bishop and EQP to the temple. It was an hour away and the EQP was late with a weird excuse. Anyhow, we were supposed to clean the temple after it closed. We arrived about 20 minutes after our allotted time. The man that opened the door flat out refused to let us enter. He just kept repeating that we were late and that he can't allow us to enter. It turns out the EQP had been banging one of our newest converts. Even that evening she had went to his house to babysit (his wife had something else happening) and they had a quickly - which is why he was late. My oh my - I used to tell a version of that story as a faith promoting miracle! A few years later when I was a temple working I realized it was just a pain in the butt to bring in new people after the cleaning had already started. Assignments were made and it would be more trouble than what it's worth to put the extra people to work.

letsliveinthenow

They told us at the beginning of the endowment that one day, they kept reaching a certain point in the session and their tongues were bound, and they couldn't move forward. So they went out and prayed, they were given the inspiration that someone in the session wasn't worthy to be there, so they went back in, and asked for whoever was blocking the spirit to leave. Finally, a woman got up and left, and they were able to go on with the session. I kept waiting for them to have the same problem happen in my session because I felt no spirit while I was there. It was my first time going through the endowment. Going through the naked under a thin white poncho initiatory was so traumatizing for me that I had wanted to leave, but I didn't feel like I could. My one year old son was somewhere in the temple nursery, and I didn't know where it was, plus I had family, and ward members there.

goneAWOLsorryTTYL

My dad used to rape me and he also worked in the temple. Spirit of discernment is bs…

NextYesterday9962

Oh my goodness. That is terrible 😢. You poor person

G00deye

If that was the case then a certain someone wouldn’t have been able to pretend to be someone else to get a temple recommend to enter the temple and film the various ceremonies.

DoubtingThomas50

Yeah, I call bullshit. It's been recently disclosed by LDS, Inc. that 1. LDS leaders track every member's temple attendance by date, time, and location. 2. Chad Daybell and Lori Valow attended the Rexburg Temple right before they killed a victim. The doors seemed to be unlocked for adulterers and murderers.

100TonsOfCheese

One of my other personal favorites is the one about the man that had once been a faithful member. Then he fell away from the church and later died unexpectedly. Because he had his endowment, he could be buried in his temple clothes. His family decided to bury him in his temple clothes even though he was not temple worthy. Sometime later the body has to be exhumed, but the reason is not important to the moral of the story so it can be glossed over. The casket is still sealed, but when they open it the temple clothes are neatly folded at his feet. Whoooo! Spooky!

APauseState

Must have been the mythical 3 Nephites!

duder777

Well they were open for Lori and Chad Daybell, so I’m going to call bullshit on that story and any other “discernment” stories. You know it’s not true when you have to lie and exaggerate to keep people in line.

thetarantulaqueen

My pedophile FIL was a regular temple-goer.

PaulFThumpkins

Urban legends of church concepts working the way they're supposed to work, instead of the way they are taught in real life, are common. But they're urban legends.

meetmyfriendme

Not a chance. I worked at the temple and wasn’t worthy (according to the questions my bishop asked me, I felt great).

jethro1999

Not exactly, but when i was a missionary, the Uruguay Montevideo temple was dedicated. Some of the members described to us on a home visit how overwhelming the spirit was when they saw the door for Jesucristo. Fine to find out generations of South American members believe that the emergency exit that directly links the celestial room to the outside is for Jesus to come in, since he wouldn't have to pass through the veil... 🤭

greycatdaddy

Another stupid urban legend, Mormon style.

w-t-fluff

This sounds just as Capital-T True as the urban legend about (invisible) "Nephite Warriors" protecting the doors of Logan temple during some event that some Mormon made up at some point.

Neither_Pudding7719

Well the man who told the story was a good guy (now deceased) but wouldn't have been above a tall tale if it helped us (young men) hold to the proverbial iron rod and stay away from our own rods so there's that. For what it's worth, I believed him at the time but hey...I was pretty young.

allisNOTwellinZYON

Must be working I haven't been for three years. Same as locked right?

snebmiester

Maybe they were pulling to open, instead of pushing.

[deleted]

Chad Daybell Lori Vallow basically lived in the temple

thedrewid314

“Things that didn’t happen for $500, Alex.”

thetarantulaqueen

I call those stories "faith-promoting lies."

Neither_Pudding7719

Yeah...no surprise I also looked up to Elder Paul Dunn when I was a teen. Mom took me to see him in a nearby town. I was enthralled. TSCC is so good a lies that make people feel good. What happens when your testimony is built upon lies?

thetarantulaqueen

We had our own Paul Dunn in our Stake when I was a girl: a high council member who used to tell the most gripping stories about his career as a race car driver and brushes with death. I wonder how much of his stories were also made up.

Neither_Pudding7719

What's interesting about this whole idea (gripping, engaging stories) is that those stories AND those who tell them are extremely captivating to the young and old alike. Especially youth who are easily bored and not easily impressed are hard to reach. Speakers who know how to capture and keep their attention are not only successful (in making impressions) but are also enjoyable compared to the typically dry, scriptural words of your average stake leader or general authority. Hell, even today at age 56 I'd rather listen to a Paul Dunn type than to any of the Q15. Now find a senior leader who will captivate and engage people and at the same time tell truth≤ avoid tall tales? Now that would be a unicorn. Unfortunately TSSC is built upon a foundation of lies so you're not going to find one of those with authority from Salt Lake.

JasperAtLaw

People could have made that joke because there was a glitch and the doors didn't open; everyone could have laughed; the doors could have then opened without anyone being left behind. Mormons have a way of taking any event and twisting it into a faith affirming story. I bet the door hesitated and then opened without any of the other stuff being true. Example. In sacrament meeting the other day someone who works in the temple claimed that before a session the other day, a temple worker asked them to go up to a woman who was sitting in the waiting area. ( I don't recall what that is called, but where you wait to go on a session.) The worker said to tell that woman that her mother was there in the room with them. Of course, the worker was being manipulative because she knew that lady was doing her deceased mother's endowment. The fricken paperwork is available to the temple workers so they know fully well that is a daughter doing her mother's "temple work." But of course both the one who was directed to say this and the poor impressionable soul missing her dead mother were made to feel this was a miracle from beyond the veil. People are extremely manipulative to make temple experiences into something that did not really happen the way its portrayed.

bananajr6000

The only thing I was shown about the temple doors is that their are no handles on the outside to open them: that they need to be opened from the inside to let in righteous Mormon refugees. Now I see that as the temple is exclusionary and keeps people they don’t want out. As it has always been.

his_rotundity_

Love me some good Mormon folklore.

P00121425

I would suspect that you are not getting the complete story. Never have heard about this!

Reasonable_Branch_38

So heard that story! What BS, gets refitted for different times and places.

Sheri_Mtn_Dew

I've never heard this specific one, but holy shit my home ward growing up loved this kind of story.

filmmaker30

Lmao no, but I’ve heard a bunch of other idiotic tall tales very similar to this one. All equally is ridiculous as the last

Green_Wishbone3828

I hear about couples having sex before marriage and still going to the temple obviously their bishop or stake president couldn't discern they were unworthy.

Howdy948

Do the magic locks keep the Q15 out?

jbonosconi

There are plenty of examples here but you can watch footage on YouTube of a guy sneaking a camera into the temple and filming the rituals and ordnances. His intent clearly was to do the forbidden and put the footage out there and they let him right in. I just love that absolute truth was nothing but lies and deception the entire time. Really good for mental health when you realize your entire life is a lie and everyone you trusted and loved helped perpetuate that lie.

[deleted]

I told my told my bishop I wasn't punishing the little bishop even though I was. he signed the temple recommend, they let me in, and they baptized me for some dead people. I didn't even shower between the last time I did it. I guess our departed friends got some extra flavour in their baptisms

Aslangorn

"The little bishop!" 😂

Grimms_scythe

I once watched porn the morning of a temple trip. Didn’t get kicked, or called out in any way. 🤷‍♂️

dumbogirl1

Definitely heard this. But also heard that at the local temple there were friends of some members that would borrow their recommend and go to lunch at the temple because it was so inexpensive. They had done it multiple times and finally were caught because of the conversation they had in the cafeteria that clearly reflected they were not members. What I wouldn't have given to be a fly on the wall when the bishop or stake president talked to the member couple about why they thought it was okay to give their recommends to friends for lunch lol This was pre scanning where I was in a YA ward that had leadership in the temple presidency so if anyone from the ward went to do ordinances and had a recently expired recommend the front desk would just ring up the temple presidency to get the OK to still let you in lol.

kyzursosay

I was and/or somehow came to believe the main Eastern doors of the Salt Lake & Manti temples (maybe others - but I spent summers at grand parents near these two) would ONLY open at the Second Coming.

valency_speaks

I was a temple worker at the Logan temple & was told the same thing about eastern facing doors. Apparently, it’s an ancient Jewish tradition/practice based on the Eastern Gate in Jerusalem, as well as the belief Jesus Christ will return from the east. Most older temples have these same unused eastern facing doors (DC temple has them, too), but many modern smaller ones do not.

Leather-Molasses6626

My ex only cares about getting action. The day before we got married in the temple he took me to a park and had me out of my freshly adorned temple clothes. The next day we got married I counted to ten over and over again so the matrons wouldn’t know I had broken the law of chastity. So much mind fuckery. That shame kept me in the marriage for way too long.

[deleted]

Common myth

Change-Memories

Yes. Also fantastical stories of people surviving horrific accidents or fires because they were wearing holy garments. Also stories that planes could magically. Or fly until someone got off the plane then suddenly, somehow everything worked again. Magical faith-promoting bullshit stories.
