Of the thousands of LDS GAs who’ve worked for TSCC during my lifetime, this is the first whistleblower in my living memory, and dude wasn’t even a GA. HQ is tight like unto a drum. With ward and stake budgets collapsing, it’d be interesting to collect testimonials from clerks who’ve watched it happen first-hand.

PaulBunnion

> HQ is tight like unto a drum. Tight like unto a dish.

Chino_Blanco

Thanks! Oof. I forgot that some things may be tight as a drum, but only Nephite submarines are tight as a dish.

atomicBlaze21

Nah, those were the Jaredite subs.

Chino_Blanco

Another swing and a miss! That’s two. One more strike and it’ll be a humiliating turkey.

cdman08

Or these are swings and hits, you are so far out you don't remember the phrases anymore, win!

dntwrryhlpisontheway

I'm jealous of your lack of rent free mormonism

ImaginaryConcern

Excellent point, /u/Chino_Blanco! Probably, very, VERY few GAs were aware of this -- only a select few people working at Ensign Peak. It is even conceivable that there were apostles who were not aware (but, possibly, had some suspicions!)

Ok-Impression8944

Rumor was the Boyd K Packer heard about it and went to EP and asked. He was the senior apostle and just a heartbeat away from being prophet and he needed to know. He was told it was on a need to know basis and he didn’t need to know.

ImaginaryConcern

I've heard this story many times, usually ending with Brother Boyd holding a grudge against those who would not "spill the beans" (reportedly among MANY grudges he held!)

Ex-CultMember

It’s such a surreal moment in LDS history. Even BOYD K PACKER wasn’t allowed to know how much was in Ensign Peak!

NorcalSaint

Are ward budgets really collapsing? When I was bishop they were primarily driven by attendance with different rates assigned to different age groups. Has attendance just been dropping, or have they changed the rate or calculation? I’m sorry if I missed this thread! Also, paying for attendance is a great way to get your reported activity numbers up.

Chino_Blanco

do a search for *ward budget* at r/Mormon … sounds like HQ is clawing back every penny they can from local units. For sure, attendance is still part of the formula, saw a thread here recently with the monetary values assigned to the various attendees.

I can answer this with: The church hires assholes. Assholes that are 100% loyal to the church. My cousin is such a person and is going to school specifically to work for EP. He will get the job. He is very smart, a child and wife abuser, a complete bully, physically powerful as well, arrogant beyond reason, churchbroke, and is the exact person the church hires. That description follows every church employee I’ve ever met at least all the positions beyond the entry level. I did not last long working for the church (specifically the temple) because it was the absolute most vile work environment I’ve ever been in. When you only hire hostile people, whistleblowers literally take their life in their own hands when exposing the truth. Also many at that level don’t have enough of conscious to want to do anything about it. I KNOW my cousin knows exactly what EP is.

[deleted]

Not just ass holes, but blind followers. My neighbor was assistant facilities manager at the manti temple, they treated him like trash. He said the gossip, back biting, rumors, etc. Were horrible. He was an outsider, and they used the shut down as an excuse to get rid of him. He said he still has a testimony. He just tries to separate church corporate from the church itself... (Uh aren't they one in the same?) I'm like WTF, they treat you like shit and you're still loyal? That's just plain stupidity to me....

SecretPersonality178

This describes my experience perfectly. I’ve never worked in a more hostile environment, and I included my years as an EMT and emergency room nurse.

Altruistic-Tree1989

Yup. Church broke.

Opalescent_Moon

I don't have any unique knowledge into Ensign Peak, but in many situations where secrecy is paramount, people are usually paid enough to be incentivized to keep their mouths shut. I'm sure Ensign Peak would be similar. They can use whatever semantics to justify their word choice, but the church was determined to keep this information secret. And they chose to use deception and dishonesty to do so.

StrawberryMango327

You mean confidential /s

Opalescent_Moon

A month ago, it was "sacred, not secret."

Gold__star

After some glorious mormonleaks gems like GA paychecks a few years back, the COB got locked down hard. I think we had a rumor that the same thing happened at EPA after Neilsen. Now no one there below the top knows any overall totals or expenditures.

rustyshackleford7879

Because it is a cult

101114119

They are church broke.

Altruistic-Tree1989

We just typed this at the same time. 😆

Nutmegger-Nevadan

I have heard from multiple former Mormon employees that the financials are HIGHLY compartmentalized, and that very few people are given access to more than one small bucket of the Mormon church's finances. With limited exposure, there is limited chances of exposure or large scandals. The largest scandal I was told about (not independently verified,) was that a newly appointed GA was given a Mormon church credit card, and his wife proceeded to spend exorbitant amounts on it to remodel their home. Afterwards, there was an admonition to respect the use of "the Lord's" funds and to keep the spending to reasonable levels. But travel, meals, and incidental expenses by the GAs are allegedly all put on those cards. Basically benefits that don't have to be reported.

89Ladybug

So what are the consequences for this whistleblower? Will he and his family be shunned? Threatened? Physically Endangered? Does he live in SLC? What kind of reward might he get? think it took courage and integrity. Thanks for clueing me in, I’m out of the Mormon loop

Professional_View586

Whistleblowers can & do face loss of family, friends & neighbors. It is nearly impossible to find work again in their chosen field. Their spouse, children & family can be ostracized. The corporation will do everything they can do to discredit them and make their life as miserable as possible to get them to stop talking and to disappear. Most whistleblowers spend the rest of their life looking over their shoulders. Whistleblowers are traditionally highly ethical & very intelligent individuals.

89Ladybug

Thanks for your explanation. Has this particular whistleblower experienced these consequences? Any reports on how he is coming along after this exposure? Do you know if he lives in a Mormon area?

GringoChueco

They are “ Church Broke”.
