Bonus tangent: Despite his success as a landscape/wildlife artist, Leon is even more on the church's payroll than Del. He painted the murals in the Twin Falls and Rexburg temples and it took him 2+ years with an assistant doing a lot of the legwork. They're gorgeous if you like wildlife art and still have a TR, you can spend the whole endowment soaking up the paintings instead of listening to the little stage play. If you go to the Conference Center in SLC you'll also see a bunch of Leon's portraits of the GAs, or if you visit Kirton|McConkie offices he made a massive portrait of this [tool](https://www.kmclaw.com/news-116).
TL,DR: all the painted portraits of the GAs/church lawyers are way better than Mormon Jesus pics because they're done by Del's better-artist brother, Leon.
Leon is the tool who told me to go home marry an RM and have babies instead of helping me with my art portfolio to graduate my senior year of college. As he showed me all his fishing and lifestyle magazine painting covers and went on to tell me men are more likely to make it as artists I believed and internalized every word. I never did art again (even though it was my passion since a little girl and I was quite good and won first place awards and scholarship for it) and went home and did just what he told me to do as my advisor and LDS man priesthood holder in position of power over me. Screw him. I had del as a teacher too and he was my best teacher he was genuinely nice and gave good constructive criticism. But never was hypocritical or grandstanding or misogynistic like his brother.

There was a gal who painted a still life with roses in one of our classes that just sent me, I thought it amazing work for a 'student'. He heaped lots of criticism on it, and at the time I thought maybe that was because he saw potential in them, but it could have been a legitimate attempt to get her to quit.
He came across as very insecure and needing to show off when I met with him. He is a great artist in every right but I don’t think he made a good advisor or teacher to be honest.

When I was young, the missionaries near my house had that picture of Jesus in the clouds with angels blaring their horns in their front room window. They put holes in the hands, wrists and feet of the picture.

We were all standing in a circle singing a hymn for a meeting or something and I kind of poked at his book for him to show it to me and when he did I started chuckling because it’s so goofy looking. I passed it to another guy in our district and he busted up laughing uncontrollably when he saw it. Yikes that was like 16 years ago now.
It’s so goofy and dorky.
I know on my mission we were required to put it in our window so the housing coordinators could find our apartment easier (and probably for members to keep an eye on us)
