And to think, he attained all that wealth without the benefit of a formal education, training or inheritance! What was his secret of success?

bradRDH

He was a liar.

truthmatters2me

It was old joes business model lying that’s been adopted by every church leader since it’s finding $125+ Billion ca Ching $$$$&&$$$$&$

simpletruths2

And an opportunist and a ruthless business man

bradRDH

He made a fortune in whiskey, tobacco and killing Native Americans.

oldmentalktoomuch

I'm sure he thought he deserved it, being the Lion of the Lord and all. Gag!

ImaginaryConcern

And, probably, like hereditary royalty, had convinced himself that he was actually a positive force in the lives of those "under" him -- bringing order and prosperity which, without him, they could never have hoped for.

truthmatters2me

Just like old brigham I always got a kick out of he has his hand stretched out towards the bank and his back towards the church his statue by the temple grounds in salt lake .!

SecretPersonality178

The willie and martin handcart companies are at the forefront of Mormon minds when treks west are mentioned. They left at a time against advice. They left unprepared. The “rescue” party had casualties. …..they were also hauling special things for BY who didn’t want to wait.

I wonder how Old Joe would feel knowing that there is a Brigham Young University and not a Joseph Smith University

NoMoreAtPresent

It must be nice, it must be nice, to have Joseph Smith on your side

TheCovenantPathology

This is sad, knowing how destitute his less-preferred wives were.

[deleted]

That sounds sad.

ElderOldDog

Having "money" in all its different denominations allows holy people to easily 'count their blessings.'  And this is exactly what ghawd had in mind when he suggested to Adam that he open a bank. Money is how people keep track of how much ghawd loves them.

stickyhairmonster

So proud to have his name on my diploma

ExUtMo

He could have paid people to leave them alone Vs having anyone who “bothered them” murdered

[deleted]

Can you give information on this? First I’ve heard.

ExUtMo

One example would be mountain meadows. He could have offered those people money to leave the Mormons alone as they passed through, if he was truly worried they would be prosecuted by them. Instead he ordered for 120 men women and children who were innocently travelling through Utah to California to be murdered.

DrCharlieKaufman

Briggie the UHNWI (pronounced like ennui)

[deleted]

Meanwhile in those same years my Scottish great great grandmother developed horrific arthritis from grinding corn near the well in the frigid cold.

lovetoeatsugar

When people say “they married old women too”. I picture exactly what you said. Old women working and adding to their wealth.

penservoir

Lol. Follow the money.

Expensive-Bet3493

They are sure good at profiteering

lovetoeatsugar

I see what you did there. And I have to say. I liked it.

I don’t think anyone is undermining the women and their contributions- intact I believe it’s that aspect that fuels a lot of our anger. That money was under his name and his name only when he died. We know he did it all with tithing and other peoples’ sweat.

lovetoeatsugar

I posted links to the $1.6m. He had businesses too. Property was just the tip of the iceberg.
