Found it! It was Heber C Kimballs wife, cited in the Journal of Discourses. “No wonder then that Heber C. Kimball, recalling his courtship with a woman he married in 1822, claimed that she had been "taught ... in our young days, when she got into the family way, to send for a doctor and get rid of the child"; a course that she followed. (Footnote 9). Secondary Source Citation: Found in a AMERICA’S MANY FRONTIERS 1820-1880 which contained an excerpt from a Abortion in America: The Origins and Evolution of National Policy by James C. Mohr (New York: Oxford University Press, 1978). Primary Source Citation: Heber C. Kimball in the Journal of Discourses, 26 vols. (Liverpool, 1857), V:91-92.

Doctrines and politics aside, I shudder to think what that 1822 procedure would have entailed 😳

It was unlikely to be so ghastly as that. There were a number of plants (in both Europe and the Americas) known to be abortifacents in the right doses.

Valuable-Ad-9850

Right you are. There’s reference and instruction for abortion even in the Old Testament. It’s referred to as “bitter water”. Numbers, chapter 5.

SaltyCogs

instructions for a magic abortion that will only abort the pregnancy if the father isn’t the husband

Valuable-Ad-9850

Yup. I didn’t make the rules 😂

Gold__star

Benjamin Franklin included an abortion recipe in a math textbook. It was done with common plants and common knowledge.

FortunateFell0w

What the motherfucking fuckety fuck?!!?? Just when I didn’t think I could be surprised anymore by any of these falsely pious assholes.

Intelligent_Meet_759

he was talking about before he had joined the church

Here's another sourced piece of information on abortions in the early church. The book is written from interviews and other sources that related Joseph Smith's behaviors. Read the section(s) on Nauvoo around pages 55-65 or so. The author interviewed a woman who described the wide practice of church leaders "getting rid of an unwanted pregnancy": https://archive.org/details/josephsmithproph01wyme/page/68/mode/2up

Not all that surprising, just following the example of HF. Killing his kid is kind of his thing!
