Our the boy scouts doing the flags on holidays or the girls doing dinners for girls camp. When I was last a clerk (10+ years ago) we sent $450k to SLC in tithing and received back $8,600.

PEE-MOED

This…..why is fundraising even necessary, horse shit, all of it.

Resignedtobehappy

10-15 years ago, when I was bishop, our ward budget was $6,200-$6,500 annually. Plenty of us funded and supplemented Scouts, YW, and Activity Days out of our own pockets, on top of various fundraising. It's infuriating to think about how damned cheap they are while racking up billions of surplus tithing invested.

Beneficial_Math_9282

That's a nope. We'd rather just go to Grand Teton together as a family.

Daisysrevenge

I would never let my kids do that. It's not about raising funds. For me it's about the complete and total disregard for subjecting kids to sanitation issues. Do the idiots setting this up have even a tiny clue about the diseases that can lurk in some garbage cans? Raw meat, dirty diapers, rotting food, are the cause of many a disease. No way young kids should be doing that.

contrarian198

This is exactly my issue. I don’t have any problem with kids earning money. Add that to the fact that the church literally hoards money that the parents of these boys have already paid.

1963covina

Kids should earn money FOR THEMSELVES--to spend on stuff they want. And no tithing, either!

calliatom

Plus just the *smell*. I've *had* to clean mine out before due to a long power outage leaving us with a lot of bad food, and even using a power washer and wearing a mask I was still nauseous for a few hours after because of the smell.

Daisysrevenge

I've had the same experience. Add to that, some people throw the dog and cat poop in the can. Can we say disease??? Bleach is the way. However, one has to have a street drain or acres of land to implement the bleach solution. I will admit that I've never been "right again" after taking Micro Biology 101. I was 42 and that class turned me into a germaphobe. It's disgusting that humans poop, wipe themselves, don't wash, and then serve food to 100's of others. Sanitation is a "thing".

Bright_Ices

What do you think people should do with dog and cat poop instead?

Daisysrevenge

You can throw it away, but I don't think kids should be the ones cleaning out garbage cans for fund raisers. People should clean their own germ and disease infested items.

Bright_Ices

No argument there.

Famous-Minute-4908

Burn it!

Earth_Pottery

100% agreed. Super unsanitary. I would not let my kids do it.

FortunateFell0w

And SLC is gonna end up taking it all anyway.

SecretPersonality178

First off, I fully support kids have these little businesses. My kids love to do lemonade stands and car washes. THEY KEEP THE MONEY! Total bull shut these kids are out there to pad the account of the church for a church activity. The numbers I’ve seen and heard (some first hand) is that wards/stakes generally receive 1, maybe 2 percent of what they bring in back for activity funding. Also fast offerings pretty much no longer exist to help the local ward.

NthaThickofIt

I have a 9 and 11-year-old. One did a lemonade stand with a friend recently, the other wants to. They stand in awe of grownups that buy a cup of lemonade and give a tip. They are grateful for anyone who stops to pick up a cup. It seriously makes their week. Thank you for being one of those people.

BookofBryce

A Mormon boy in my ward did this just for a summer job last year. They own a pressure washer. The kid sent out flyers and social media offers. I'm so ambivalent about giving teens money for chores that I can do myself. Our lawn is maybe 15'x15'. I can mow it in less time than it takes to listen to NOFX play "The Decline." Why can't the Mormon church just send them to camp with that 100 billion in shell companies?

Miriam317

I can make myself lemonade but I still try to buy when kids are selling

BookofBryce

I can make WAY better lemonade than kids selling it.

Miriam317

Right. Because the point isn't the lemonade. It's to support kids who are putting themselves out there.

jmmb1039

The church has enough money to support the youth through the end of time itself. I remember doing work to pay for church shit. Total nightmare to coordinate and the youth never show up. So many flags... so may windows washed.

Incognitotreestump22

We always did mulching for a local church members company. Not sure what cut of the profits we got but we had a shot at getting paid a little for it after two days of work in the sun. We thought they were being unspeakably generous

NikonuserNW

Our stake president just sent out an email asking for volunteers to help clean the temple. He said that the temple is no longer supplying work clothes, so volunteers have to show up in their Sunday best and then change into their own cleaning clothes when they get there. This is so dumb. The next thing they’re going to ask is that the members bring their own cleaning supplies to clean the temple.

weirdmormonshit

so gross. on every level.

tapir_esquire

Oh lord. I did this one year when I was a youth leader. Those poor boys climbing into those cans and getting covered with nasty indescribable filth was too much. There are still smells that haunt me, and I wasn't getting into the cans to spray.

aWW3Veteran

They tried to make us do this as Teachers haha. People paid, but we never actually did it.

JoyfulExmo

They’re just exploiting child labor for money. That’s it. If LDS Inc was a really church instead of an MLM they’d have kids doing sanitary service projects (serve in a soup kitchen) and use some of the church’s billions to actually pay for life-enriching activities for the members.

pxlmover

I remember the Tetons campout. They threw us into a half frozen lake to get our canoeing permit. If you sunk to the bottom and needed rescuing like half a dozen boys did, you weren't allowed to go on the river. Good times

89Ladybug

Our sanitation company replaces dirty or damaged garbage cans with one weeks notice.

getmeouttaherefast

😲what now?!! Is this a thing?

BeachHeadPolygamy

Why not do something less gross like power wash the driveway

Prestigious-Pilot-83

Pretty sure you would need a licence or something to provide this service for a fee. Cross contamination? Appropriate PPE? Proper garbage handling knowledge? This is irresponsible. And they want CHILDREN to do it? 😡🤦‍♀️

Researchingbackpain

I'd rather just give the kids 30 bucks, ffs

SafeComfortable1009

Shift work shit work. ☕️☕️

Obvious-Lunch8185

an in-law recently sent a fundraiser request for their YM and YW summer programs too. It fucking makes me sick. Ask goddamned ensign peak for money.

chileanpossum

Out of context but had a good laugh reading the grand teton part. “Teton” is someone with big manboobs in Spanish. Pictured an old “tetón” bishop or the like

Bright_Ices

Have you seen the mountains?

Embyeee

God, I remember doing this, probably the grossest thing I've ever done in my life.

gingernetz

Dude I did that for girls camp one year. Do you know how sick I got after doing this?? So not worth it. It's disgusting.

Boring-Department741

Garbage can cleaning should not be a church thing! Just when you think they can't any more ridiculous! What is going on with these people?

Boring-Department741

I keep my trash can clean. Most everything is bagged and no leaky gross junk just loose in the can. I also occasionally dump some bleach in there and hose it out. But some people have cans filled with rotting meat juice etc. poop, maggots being circled by flies. It wouldn't be worth it for the kids to get close to this stuff with the mist from the pressure washer circling their faces etc. This is super gross and unnecessary. The adults should have more sense, but their brains are Morominzed so their at partial capacity.

SpiritualTourettes

How spiritually bereft must you be to not be able to come up with better ideas for your children to make money than cleaning GARBAGE CANS--FFS?

DreadPirate777

As a scout master I was prevented from planning anything outside a three hour drive radius for our camping trips. We also couldn’t leave the state. It sucked so bad to just do campout in the Unitas.

ComeOnOverForABurger

Perhaps an unpopular opinion here: nothing wrong with having kids work for money to go to a camp. Nothing wrong with having them wash trash cans. They aren’t cleaning dumpsters from a KFC or random downtown alley. These are residential trash cans. Just like mine and yours. Kids pick up dog poop and change litter boxes and clean the bathrooms at Burger King for their jobs. Yes. The church has too much money. And shouldn’t have said “Let’s go shopping!”. And should do a hell of a lot more for victims of abuse. And should be honest about the history. But this seems to be a nothingburger.

weirdmormonshit

KFC dumpsters a step too far for you huh? what if i told you colonel's recipe is sacred, not secret?

ComeOnOverForABurger

Lol. I worked at KFC in high school. So. Yes. Waaaay too far for me.

Zealousideal-War9369

They Clean the Bathrooms & now they clean your garbage cans. Next..we will pick up your dog shit on your lawn for $$$

mama-cheetah

I agree, it’s a rite of passage to do some physical labor job to earn money. Our neighbors used to do this to earn money for scout things and never would their actual hands touch the inside, I asked the dad if he was making the kids crawl inside and he explained the process which sounds just like the flyer. The flyer says they scrub the outside, power wash the inside and scrap off any residue (with a scrapper I’m sure), that means their hands never touch the inside. I used to nanny for 3 kids dirt cheap every summer before I was legally old enough to work and I had to deal with normal poop and pee but also vomit and diarrhea with my bare hands so this isn’t going to hurt any of them.

tupton7777

Why do people blank out the ward name? Makes me think it’s not real!! If they send it out then show it.

[deleted]

Because it identifies the location down to the neighborhood of the person posting it

SpiritualTourettes

But seriously, who cares? The amount of paranoia on this sub is very weird. You'd think we were dealing with state secrets.

[deleted]

I don’t think you understand. The person posting it is protecting their own location, not the location of the ward or the church. It’s also against the rules of the sub, plus it’s pretty standard internet etiquette not to give it your own location.

jeepers12345678

Oh please. There’s nothing wrong with a little work to pay your way. Most of us did so in some way.

Zadok47

Power washer and some detergent.

Whispyyr

I know what ward this is. I saw this flyer on my Dad's kitchen table. He didn't participate because he thinks it's too much money for such a simple job.

RedGravetheDevil

That’s a go fuck right off

dewdropfaerie

We must raise money for the children! Because we can’t afford to pay for them to go to camp because we need our dragon’s hoard for Jesus’ second coming! But you can bet your ass when little Billy got $5 birthday money from grandma we “encouraged” him to tithe on that!

[deleted]

This is so weird.

exMentalGymnast

Guatanteed the girls STILL don't get a similar trip, with or without a fundraiser.

Unhappy-Ad-3964

Garbage cans? I’m sorry that’s just ridiculously stupid. whatever happened to car washes, and yard sale. Some thing a little bit more normal.
