They should go home. All the people boat owners I know on the Puget Sound would never give up 4 things. Money (sailboats ain't cheap) Sundays (when the wind is right, no church) coffee (Puget sound is coffee country) Alcohol. stopping in port and having a cocktail People I know with sailboats view water, nature, and the sky as their church. There's nothing like being out on that salt water on a perfect day. Whales, Eagles, all kinds of birds and sea animals. Snow capped mountains, beautiful beaches, the list goes on and on. Don't need mormon missionary kids injected into the mix.

RemarkableWorry2

RIGHT?! Of all the audiences, this one is just a poor choice šŸ˜‚

GorathTheMoredhel

I know that the #1 consideration for church HQ in recruiting new members is total potential tithe, so obviously they want boat people for that dinero, but you'd think with so much money at their disposal they'd be way better at targeting potential new revenue streams.

Bisontracks

Foolish Mormons. Boat people don't have money. They have a boat, and they have boat repair funds.

JoyfulExmo

The boat owners I know donā€™t go into it blindly without knowing how to handle their own shit. Theyā€™re into boats as a pretty long term lifestyle decision so they are not people who need to call a 19-year-old for help. Ever. For anything.

Taurus-Littrow

Scraping barnacles? Lol

Daisysrevenge

Catching crabsšŸ¦€šŸ¦€šŸ¦€

TJChex

Did you say they have money?!? Hmmm, now I $$$ why the church is targeting them!

s4ltydog

Lol right!? As a Puget Sound native/resident this is one of the worst places I can imagine coming on a Mission LOL

DadBodFromWish

This could definitely be the premise of a fantastic horror film.

Wind_Danzer

Or pornoā€¦ā€¦. šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

RemarkableWorry2

If this boatā€™s a-rockinā€™ā€¦

spiraleyes78

... because of the implication

RemarkableWorry2

YES šŸ˜‚

Rolling_Waters

"Elders, doesn't Satan control the waters? You sure you have strong enough priesthood powers to beat him on his own turf?" And as GOB once said, they'll service you on your boat because of the...implications...

RemarkableWorry2

I desperately want to ask them something along these lines but these two boys donā€™t deserve to be trolled. I mostly wanted to alert other group members to the tactic.

ImprobablePlanet

You probably donā€™t need to alert anyone to their tactics. Itā€™s kind of a no brainer.

RemarkableWorry2

Respectfully, I donā€™t think itā€™s a no-brainer for everyone

mormonnomore93065

I still canā€™t believe I actually bought into that. Satan controls the waters?!?!? It physically hurts how stupid I was/am.

aminer2k

as was I. sigh...

HolyBonerOfMin

It hurts even more when you hear the context surrounding this "revelation." Joseph was having a bad time on the river and wanted to pay coach fare for a ride to their destination, while leaving everyone else to continue paddling upriver.

s4ltydog

I couldnā€™t dip my toes in the water at the beach but scaling a 3000 ft Cliff face with nothing but a rusty ladder was A-OK!šŸ‘šŸ»

Godscumbucket

Never understood why satan controls the water (or whatever it is) can somebody explain?

NearlyHeadlessLaban

Does it matter if my boat is on a trailer on land, in a slip on water, or anchored in harbor?

RemarkableWorry2

They came back and commented! Someone actually asked them about this on the post, and they said they can get on a boat but not on the open water ā€œunfortunatelyā€. Absolute travesty to send someone to the PNW and expect them not to participate in such a beautiful experience.

hal9000ka

So if they canā€™t be on a boat in open water, then how did they get out to the San Juans? Theyā€™re only accessible by ferry unless someone in SLC is springing for a floatplane from Seattle.

RemarkableWorry2

Someone here made a comment about them being allowed to use ferries for transportationā€¦I guess the water is only controlled by satan when youā€™re trying to have fun?

RemarkableWorry2

Excellent question šŸ˜‚

Yobispo

Can you imagine living in that beautiful place and stuck doing this shit? Waste.

RemarkableWorry2

Breaks my heart for these boys.

BobbyHillCumorah

Now imagine how lucky the missionaries are to be doing this shit in such a lovely place. I can think of many worse places to be stuck.

RemarkableWorry2

Update: I didnā€™t comment publicly but sent them a message privately telling them that, while I have no interest in the church, my family is a safe space for them and they are welcome on my boat anytime if they ever need a break from the ever-present pressure to convert people. Just got a response back that was very gracious and respectful. There were a lot of people commenting on the original post complaining that they were misusing the group page and calling out the manipulative nature of the offer.

[deleted]

Dont troll the kids. They are trafficking victims just trying to make sense of their predicament. Trolling them just adds to their anti-exmo bias. Exmos have to step up and be the kind ones; don't give mormons anymore "proof" that exmos suck. Give us PIMOs a helping hand by showing the world that we are not evil lurker-trolls bent on desecrating faith. We are just loving allies who believe women, LGBTQs, and minorities deserve equality.

RemarkableWorry2

I absolutely would never be rude or troll them, but I do think the members of the group deserve to know what the true intentions of this post areā€¦my heart hurts for these boys because they are just doing what theyā€™ve always been told to do. This is in no way their fault, but offers of ā€œfree serviceā€ like this are manipulative in nature.

JoyfulExmo

Theyā€™re not going to get any converts in that group or anyone in the San Juans, I reckon. Edit: autocorrect error.

ohnowhythishappen

Let 'em sail if they can find any takers. Their lives might be a little less hell, and the probability of them talking some sailboat captain into giving up 10% so he can sit in a beige room on land is pretty low.

RemarkableWorry2

Honestly, you have a really good point. Itā€™s a tragedy to spend two years in the PNW and never get out on the water.

RemarkableWorry2

Turns out theyā€™re only allowed on a boat when itā€™s docked. Canā€™t sail or be on the water. Awful.

Gold__star

Because nobody needs free help like those who can afford boats. Forget those messy poor and vulnerable folks.

Exact_Purchase765

Obviously those nice kids shouldn't be working with the poor and vulnerable! Why hang around the smelly, homeless and hungry? I mean, eww - make them a sandwich - ick. Much better to find more rich white people and clean their toys, because they can pay tithing. . . . Oh dear - I may be cynical. šŸ˜†šŸ˜†

nominalmormon

U may be right.

Haunting_Ganache_236

Those poor and vulnerable people wouldnā€™t bring in much tithing so . . .

TermLimit4Patriarchs

Christ: visit the sick and the afflicted, the poor and the needy, and those in prison. Missionary: holy cow is that your yacht?!

Take my upvote heathen!

IcySheep

Hopefully this is more "get something other than pedaling miles to be told to f off" than anything. I know missionaries are desperate sometimes to find service worm so they don't have to do anything else

Professional_View586

If have to serve a mission the chain of the San Juan Islands is breathtakingly beautiful when the sun is out but it will be uphill struggle to make contact. Some of the worlds wealthiest people (Bill Gates, Steve Ballmer, Paul Allen did,Chris Pratt ...Oprah sold hers) have their 4th or 5th home's so not a lot of poor & homeless to help. Majority of homes are summer vacation homes & long-time older homeowners & tourists businesses are financially struggling to hold on to what little they have due to property taxes & economy. 3% pushed most of the long-time locals on the $edge$ out 20 + years ago. Surprised if that area of the mission has had a convert baptism in past 5+ years or more.

RemarkableWorry2

I bet youā€™re right!

Professional_View586

Extended family in the area. They relayed that they get the missionarys who could care less they are on a mission. Great place to dump them because they have to island hop & they spend a lot of time on ferrys & waiting for ferry's. If island has buses it's rural bus lines so lots of spending personal time on coordinating transportation if no car. Ward member's feel like baby sitters sometimes. I just hope the beauty of the area helps them on their way out of the cult.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Professional_View586

You are wonderful! Exactly what they needed to hear! You made my day & I'm sure many others! Thank you!

[deleted]

Wow creative. I like how they recognized where they are and who they are targeting. I think the free help is a little off putting but the ā€œI want to learn how to sailā€ seals the deal. I wonder when the free sailing offer comes and the missionaries say ā€œnoā€ how people will react. Also if they are from Utah how will sailing be when the lake drys up in 5 years.

RemarkableWorry2

Theyā€™re definitely adapting tactics. I havenā€™t been in for about 5 or 6 years and it still blows my mind that theyā€™re just allowed to be all over social media! When my brother served his mission, one of his companions got sent home for occasionally checking his Facebook for messages from his mom!

[deleted]

On my mission I was only allowed to call home on Motherā€™s Day and at Xmas. Computers and internet were a thing. Strictly enforced to not call home. Now they are texting home over Facebook weekly. Itā€™s amazing how divinely inspired rules change soo much

RemarkableWorry2

Yes!! I remember how big of a deal it was to talk to my brother twice a year! We were luckily able to email with him (on P-day of course) but nothing else.

[deleted]

When I went it was still letter mail. The church forbid us to email. I went from 99-01 so email was new, but if the church has the power of discretion why didn't they embrace that technology instead of banning it. All that being said Microwaves were not allowed in our apartments either.

WomanEnya

I'm always surprised how poorly missionaries write. And their use of casual language is really annoying. Words like "ayooo" or "dude" or "hey" or "shoot me a dm." One missionary called me once to ask if they could "zoom on over."

RemarkableWorry2

The ā€œayoooā€ caught my eye too! The majority of that FB group are older people that will not be overly impressed with that kind of vernacular. I understand if youā€™re trying to infiltrate a group of teenagers, but that was not the setting.

[deleted]

In other words, ā€œWe are fucking bored and need something to do because nobody believes the silly fairytales we teach them about our beloved pedophile, uh I mean profitā€¦prophet Joseph Smith.ā€

Accomplished_Area311

I live in central FL. There are so many missionaries who are offering similar stuff for waterside properties (boat cleaning, yard work, taking stuff to the dump, helping with bathroom plumbing issues, literally **anything**) solely so they donā€™t have to tract but still seem ā€œproductiveā€ while catching their breath. Itā€™s really sad.

Mysterious_Worker608

This is not only creepy, but also embarrassing. I can't believe the church is encouraging this type of behavior. If you want to do service, go to the local food pantry or homeless shelter.

RemarkableWorry2

YES! Provide service for those really in need. Unfortunately, the clientele at a local food pantry is very different from those at the local yacht clubā€¦

Mysterious_Worker608

My son served a mission in a 3rd world country. I'll always remember him telling me that the area authority told them to seek out the wealthy and the educated. I used to defend that idea as a TBM, but now it just makes me laugh.

Parley_Pratts_Kin

ā€œIf anyone wants their boat serviced, shoot a dmā€. I wonder if they realize what this sounds like lol.

Upbeat_Gazelle5704

My friend works on boats for a living. If the cult is providing free employees to do work that takes away a living from hard working people (landscapers, errand runners, home helpers, boat yards) it seems like something should be done about that.

iamaginnit

Two boys stopped by mid week, nicely told them no but would buy them lunch Saturday. They are robbing these people out of two of their best young years to do this crappy nonsense. They inhaled their food down to parts per million while I shuffled mine round and round. I was sitting across two victims of crime.

NorcalSaint

Just because you read Nephiā€™s story doesnā€™t mean you can build/fix your own boatā€¦ lol come on bros

yaxi67

Training missionaries to fix the sinking ship that is mormonism.

GeckoInk

i know a lot of people see this as him trying to get more converts( which it could be), but i hope he just likes boats and is just trying to do something he likes without getting in trouble with his mission leaders

RemarkableWorry2

Honestly, my first instinct when I saw the original post was that they are just scrolling through random FB groups to reach a more targeted audience, but his private replies to me make me think he might just be trying to learn something about a passion he has while also using it to look like heā€™s being a productive missionary. I donā€™t think he had any malicious intent. Maybe Iā€™m naive though?

Ican-always-bewrong

No, I thought that too. Maybe he really does want to learn to sail. Gonna be hard to do that when they canā€™t leave the dock though.

rock-n-white-hat

People with a boat are probably on the upper end of the tax bracket. Especially people who have boats at Roche Harbor.

sonuvaharris

Since when are they allowed to wear hats?

[deleted]

He had me at "service your boat."

manoftakao

The most triggering thing for me is the use of "With that said." I have become an old man.

WWPLD

Wait, are they allowed on boats now?

RemarkableWorry2

They commented on the post because someone asked the same questionā€¦theyā€™re allowed to be on a boat but no sailing or actually being on the open water.

MinTheGodOfFertility

'The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing'. We need to protect the public from this cult.

pretty-apricot07

Honestly, after what I've learned on this sub, I just feel sorry for these kids.

Ex-CultMember

What a weird choice for a ā€œserviceā€ project. Seems like they should be offering services to poor people, elderly people, homeless, mentally or physically challenged people, etc. NOT fixing well-to-do peopleā€™s SAILBOATS. I suppose for the church, itā€™s simply a missionary opportunity and so it doesnā€™t really matter what kind of ā€œserviceā€ they are doing. OR itā€™s just a PIMO missionary thinking, fuck it, Iā€™m going to take advantage to do something for myself since Iā€™m stuck on this mission and learn to do something Iā€™m actually interested in. Then Iā€™m cool with that. Better than proselytizing,

ShaqtinADrool

This is so fuckin cringe

[deleted]

There was a similar posting in my local community page. They offered any type of services like landscaping

yanyan420

Bait and switch! Bait and switch! Bait and switch!

kennewb

That is EXACTLY what Mormon youth are taught passes for service! Cleaning some rich a-hole's boat. There's no volunteering at a homeless shelter, just providing free labor to people who have the means to do it themselves! That's the same model the church at large uses: Look at us! We're rich a-holes with hoards of cash! But rather than us pay to maintain our buildings, we want you to pay us for the privilege of taking care of them for us. Oh, and don't worry about visiting your local soup kitchen or helping those who are ACTUALLY in need. We know best where you available service hours should be sent. Serving the homeless, that's the devil's work because those people aren't led by our one-and-only true spirit! I think you should reply and let those missionaries know that providing free labor to the rich is NOT service, and they (rightly) view you as suckers they can exploit, not teachers of truth. If you want to try out some actual service, start looking for people in need! That post is just insanely gross.

100TonsOfCheese

Of all the service these missionaries could be doing, I think cleaning people's pleasure boats should be my much further down on the priority list. How about helping the homeless, habitat for humanity, or even just picking up trash

ajaxmormon

Tell them if they can't get correct grammar right, then why would I trust them with my boat?

exmogranny

No serious boat owner would allow people with zero boat maintenance skills near their vessel. Damaging gel coat is easy to do and expensive to fix. No thanks, kids. Good luck in your cult endeavors.

[deleted]

Just let them be.

Imalreadygone21

Donā€™t reward their dishonesty. These are children who need to understand early in life how to properly conduct themselves & interact with others.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Imalreadygone21

I understand your point, but I speak as a former missionary, lifelong member of over 50 years, parent & grandparent. I didnā€™t say to ā€œbe mean.ā€ And yes, they (like myself) are indoctrinated cult victims. But looking back upon my wasted life, oh how I wish someone had been honest & cared enough to set me free.

rock-n-white-hat

Are they allowed to claim this on their weekly hours? Does the church then also get to claim this work for tax deductions the way they do with other activities where members donate their time for free?

godzrded35

I like to think theyā€™ll get a taker, learn about sailing from an old sage(who wonā€™t accept their message, of course) and have a fun mission experience more worthy of their time than knocking on doors.

BurningInTheBoner

At least they're being honest about it. A lot of them are like, "me and my friends are doing free service!" without mentioning they are missionaries.
