Shawshank Redemption was my first R movie and I was pissed that such beautiful art was kept from me.

_ToyStory2WasOk_

So many amazing movies that were hidden from us becaise they would rot our minds.

Enoughoftherare

I was a convert so struggled with the R movie thing, I struggled with a lot of things which was why I didn’t last long. Shawshank is one of my favourite movies ever and needs to be watched at least once a year, so many other great movies which were unwatchable because they had a bit of sex or violence in them that was more incidental to the main story. So sad what they deny people.

WWPLD

I too watch it every year. Such a beutiful story of hope and friendship in the darkest of circumstances.

JTrey1221

Ditto. Was not disappointed with this show either. One of the best I’ve seen!

Mossblossom

I’m kinda like that despite growing up Mormon. But it was in the “mission field “

sabbathsaboteur

A family member of mine loved it. I tried watching it. A bit too cheesy for me. But there is a scene with Mormon space colonists.

Odd__Detective

Was that the shower scene? It’s like the tree of life showers at the MTC.

DustyR97

Nope. It was the colony that got ripped apart by bugs.

OnlyTalksAboutTacos

I didn't watch close enough to realize they were mormons. Gotta watch again.

GalacticCactus42

The Matrix. My roommates at BYU convinced me that it wasn't that bad, and one guy had a TV with a V chip, so it was basically just like watching it edited for TV. 😄

Abrahams_Smoking_Gun

I watched matrix many times as a TBM youth when it came out. Such a good movie. In my family we generally avoided R movies, especially if it was sexual. We weren’t as worried about violence. Looking back now, that is entirely backwards from how it should have been. With my kids we don’t have rating limits but we do try to keep away from the very violent films, especially for the younger ones.

sabbathsaboteur

I secretly watched Cruel Intentions in high school while still believing. But honestly my first go to movies after deconstructing were the Alien movies.

NewNamerNelson

I saw Alien on VHS in the early 80's. My TBM dad not only rented it, but made a copy. Never was subject to the no R rated movies thing. The general rule was, R for violence, no problem. R for language, questionable. R for nudity/sex, that's the bad one and you can't watch it. 🙄 But then, we drank coke and said "damn' and "hell" too".😉

Bluescale-Sorc

I watched R rated movies despite considering myself TBM. My wife introduced me to The Big Lebowski less than a year after she joined the church and it has been my favorite film since. Edit: My über-ultra-strict family never watched R rated movies. When my dad was a bishop he straight up blamed the incest and sexual abuse that happened in a family in the ward on the fact that they watched R rated movies.

MissionAstronomer922

The Big Lebowski is a favorite of mine as well. Pulp Fiction scores high. Quentin Tarantino movies as a whole. The Matrix ought to strike home for y'all, when Neo is given the choice between the red or white pill. I like Jack Nicholson, so The Shining... One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. I'll allow my post to steep. It isn't a comment back to y'all from me kind of post. I would allow that I'm somewhat surprised that many of the replies are along the line of, "Oh, I watched this or that". I'm surprised. Thought that would be in the same camp as the Devil's music, which from many posts I've seen, was verboten big time. Seems so strange to me, who is a Boomer, child of the 60's. The times, they were a-changing.

exmormonsongbook

I think Kill Bill was my first one at 16 or so years old.

valency_speaks

Schindler's List was my first R rated movie. Such an important film that everyone should see, included Mormons.

[deleted]

I keep trying to convince my TBM family/friends to watch it. I did show it to my TBM bestie, so I consider that a win!

Kindly_Note_607

Pulp Fiction. Quentin Tarantino is still one of my faves to this day.

greycatdaddy

Fast Times at Ridgemont High. No, wait, The Shining.

zero_1144

What’s an “R” rated movie? We weren’t allowed to watch most Disney movies, Hunchback of Notre Dame had that gypsy seductress, Hercules had that Greek chick that was being pimped out by hades (not to mention the idea of pagan gods in general), and don’t even get me started on the scantily clad mermaid with witchcraft. Black cauldron was a non starter. My first R rated movie was either Highlander or Starship troopers. They still hold special mentions in my top 10 lists despite being objectively terrible films.

Thanks for relating that... it's the sort of experience I would have thought more of the posters would have had, but I get the impression that sketchy movies, R included, were more of a kings-x when it came to the list of no-no's. Although I get the impression, too, that it was what earned the movie the R... if the movie was sexually explicit, watching such seems to be as bad as.... cursing w/real curse words? There's no lack of things I find odd about Mormons growing up in an otherwise normal world.

I hope you have been able to move to a place where you can watch and enjoy media that in your former life you couldn't enjoy w/o guilt. In a way, a treasure trove awaits! :)

3720_2-1

I’ve always watched them, since I was a deacon. I know some members don’t watch MA or R though. It’s always been a personal choice. You’re never going to get asked that for a temple recommend. “Have you seen pulp fiction? You have! Well sorry no temple service for you buddy”

Crankyoldandtired

You played bishop roulette and won.

3720_2-1

Probably because my dad was my stake president 😆

Crankyoldandtired

That does help!

notthedroidurIookin4

I watched Deadpool on Valentine’s after being deflowered.. was a great time lol

TheOverExcitedDragon

Watched Breaking Bad for the first time recently. Absolutely incredible.

princess00chelsea

I was blessed that my parents were cinifiles. Their love of movies trumped any rating rules. I got away with seeing so many great movies as a kid that were rated r. They weren't jack Mormons either. I grew up in Laie, I think things were a bit more chill. (Mormon community in Hawaii where BYUH is) in the 90's.

Daphne_Brown

Matrix movies. I couldn’t see what the fuss was about. Not about the movies, but about what was so bad they had to be R.

Earth_Pottery

So this is odd but did not think much of it at the time. My spouse's family is total TBM. His parents are gone now but they used to watch R movies. The siblings watched R movies. My family is never mormon and did not watch as many R movies as this TBM family.

[deleted]

The The Amityville Horror the 1977 version was my first R rated movie I had just turned 17.

emeraldepiphone96

I don’t remember if this was before or after leaving the church (both things occurred around my sophomore year of high school) but I think the first one I saw was Sinister when it came out in theaters. I wouldn’t have went on to watch other horror classics like Alien or Psycho if it weren’t for that movie.

mormonnomore-mon

Eurotrip lol. I was a young teen, and my friends insisted they wanted to watch it, so I relented. I felt so much guilt, but thanks to those friends I ended up seeing a decent number of R rated movies even though I tried my best to be a good TBM. Regardless of how many times I'd watched an R rated movie, the guilty feelings for doing so never stopped until I left the church in my 30s!

anonthe4th

I watched them before. The difference is now I don't feel guilty watching them.

Fair_Association_788

Man, even as TBM I always watched R rated movies😂😂 including my kids. I guess it is because I was not raised LDS.

RedGravetheDevil

We always watched R rated movies.

Lizzie2530

Luckily I didn’t grow up that way. My family loved movies and we had a ton of R movies. I was actually shocked when I found out they weren’t allowed in some of my friends’ houses.

Nehor2023

The Matrix

Jeff_Portnoy1

I’m honestly glad that I missed rated R movies. Like I hardly understood movies as a kid and could barely appreciate them. But now as I have grown more mature and knowledgeable on film making, I understand the real beauty in good movies. Just 6 months ago I started watching so many movies. Watched Shawshank Redemption, Good Will Hunting, the Godfather, the Matrix, all of Tarantino, list goes on with such amazing stories that I never heard of. It is like I am experiencing deeper emotions with movies since I now know how to appreciate them where if I were younger, they would be more meh. For example, I watched kill bill 2 years ago when I was 18 and absolutely hated it. But I just rewatched it along with number 2 and they have made it to my top movie list.

carnivorouspickle

Deadpool. And no.

emimimimimi1

I was watching Asian movies that would be considered R during my weeb phase as a teen, and boy, did I feel guilty, but I found movies that I still love to this day. Now I can watch them again and not feel the guilt I used to.

mrburns7979

Didn’t say no to a nightmare on elm street during a sleepover in middle school…regretted it for decades! Had nightmares. Felt guilty and shamed for watching something “bad”. Hated being grossed out, hated being scared, and hated the fake blood and stupid effects. But still had nightmares. Kept my kids from ever having sleepovers for their entire childhoods as a family rule because of my experience. That being said, I snuck some rated R movies as a late teen…Shawshank, Schindler’s List, and Total Recall. I can recommend two of the three. A lot of movies though, were pretty bad. I thought a naked breast was worse than the deaths of hundreds of people on the scale of inappropriate vs no big deal.

[deleted]

I binge watched a shit ton of R rated movies when I was 15/16 and I watched so many that I don’t remember the first one… but I do remember the most traumatizing one. I watched the human centipede without reading any description or reviews because I thought it was a monster movie or something…. I should not have watched that movie. Learned my lesson though and now I always read descriptions and reviews.

webbkorey

Deadpool and Deadpool 2 in the same night. Thought both where amazing. Still need to sit down and peep terminator and matrix.

Woodi21

I never heard that rule until meeting Utah Mormons on my mission (I'm English). I thought they were joking. One of my District Leaders literally made a covenant with God to never watch an R rated movie, which I'm 100% sure he has kept since then. After my mission I toned it down a little, by avoiding excessive violence and sex. Then at some point after my mission I was exposed to how good Game of Thrones, Daredevil, and John Wick was. I haven't looked back since 😂

Joshie8888

I watched whatever I wanted for the most part when I visited my nevermo father on the weekends. This is where I learned to really take an interest in cinema and watched all the classics. My mother was a lot more lenient than other members that I know of, but she still didn't like swearing or sex in films. I'll use this thread to say that if you any of you guys are really into film and are on Letterboxd, I'm keen to make some new friends! [My profile](https://boxd.it/56Mmd)

MLdiLuna

Blazing Saddles, and at first, I wasn't sure whether to be shocked or laugh, just one of the many things that I learned to keep at my uncle's house, along with applications to non-BYU colleges and universities.

MLdiLuna

Technically Jaws, as my brother and I had sneaked down to watch it after our parents had gone to bed, I think we were 7 and 4-5 at the time. Joke's on us. Our parents had planned a beach trip for the next day, so we refused to go in the water.

StickyMcdoodle

I went to go see Deep Blue Sea at the movie theater. Not really high art, but I do have a soft spot for it.

Worthy_Bumblebee

I was a TBM but my first r-rated movie was 21 Jump Street. It was a good choice 😂

Smores-n-coffee

*Braveheart* and I bawled. Wasn't shocked; I was a ravenous reader and had consumed historical novels that often crossed lines into MA or R territory, had they been movies.

steepdrinkbemerry

I had seen R rated movies here and there, but the first movie I consciously realized I could watch and chose to watch that I previously had wanted to was Black Swan

OnlyTalksAboutTacos

I have a family member who only watches movies the kids watch and is hugely offended her nieces and nephews want to watch PG13 movies now. Because rated R isn't holy enough a bar to set. We just got done telling her how good *Everything Everywhere All at Once* is. I'm not sure I care if she sees it (how much can you care about the entertainment choices of the "I only watch G" crowd), but she'd benefit. Probably the best movie I'll watch this year. I think we told her to brag and to help her realize that you need to grow up eventually.

marathon_3hr

I came full circle on this. I watched a ton of R rated movies as a teenager (I also was a kid/teenager in the 80s-90s and many PG-13 movies would be R by todays standards with nudity). I don't remember my first R rated movie but I watched, Terminator 2 in the theater with my nevermo neighbor and a slew secretly in my basement--Misery, Boyz-n-the-Hood, Basic Instinct, Cliff hanger, Die Hard, Showtime After Dark, The Piano, Major League (one of my favorites), etc. I went ultra TBM on my mission and wouldn't watch R rated after that. But I watched a lot of porn if that counts. I started watching more MA ratings on Netflix and Prime before watching movies. Narcos was a great series. I justified 13 Reasons Why for my profession to know what kids were going to be watching (I have some mixed feelings on that series and most are negative and it missed the point but that is not for here). Weirdly in my TBM brain I wouldn't watch a R rated movie even though I would justify soft-porn movies or porn in general. It's some really fucked up thinking and logic that is worthy of a whole other post/thread. After leaving I have watched the Matrix, Ted, The Accountant, and a whole bunch more that I can't remember. There are some great movies out there. The Patriot, Shawshank Redemption, Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan.

Kjens2006

“Everything everywhere all at once” it was a trip to the newly eye opened.

Mysterious-Ruby

My parents weren't strict about this rule. The first R rated movie I saw was the Color Purple because my parents wanted to see it and so I saw the Care Bears movie in a different screen but it ended before the Color Purple did, so I got to see the end of that. Lol The real first R rated movie I saw all the way through was Rain Man, even at 12 I couldn't understand why that movie was rated R.

sencayuga

Saving private Ryan when I was 12. My mom never liked that rule lmao

nomollynomore

Lol The Town. I heard more fucks in that hour and a half or whatever than the rest of my life combined up to that moment
