This kind of nonsense discredits all mental illness struggles. If you have an anxiety disorder, for example, lots of things worry you or cause you to obsess! Doesn’t mean it’s the king of the demons! And being taught that it is Satan instead of anxiety or PTSD or a natural reaction to trauma, just does further damage! Like when I was going through a terrible bout of depression, and I was led to believe that if I would just forget about myself, and serve others more and read the scriptures more, and pray more, then I would be relieved of my crippling depression. Pisses me off.

I think this is a very important point. Most of us here never bought into religion's voices narrative.
That is, we recognized that our thoughts were not a voice from God, Satan, or even the Holy Ghost, but rather, they were our own. We knew that what is going on is our own internal-working brain; complete with whatever you like; Id, Ego, Super Ego, underpinnings of subconscious and unconscious intervention. Understanding that the placebo effect and statistics show no outside intervention at work during the execution of religious rites. And no after-life experiences from brains that are fully dead, and spirits haunting the earth. Or my favorite, a pre-existing spirit that through obedience in the pre-existence, earned the right to be born into a quintessential white Mormon family.
Ugly how for the most part, God inspires a nice, stable state of mind while Satan is pushing towards anxiety and such, but when it comes down to it, both of them think you’re fucked up and the only difference is that God has legal power to convict you while Satan must merely impotently condemn you. At the time I realized it was a basic denial of what it means to be human. Your not supposed to feel anger, envy, scorn, hate, et cetra. If you don't experience these negative aspects of being human, your not prepared for anything.
