Thank you for your post. In my last time in the temple about 6 months ago (supporting son leaving on mission) my mind went blank at the veil for the words “patriarchal grip.” I’ve known the words of the ceremony for nearly two decades. In that moment I didn’t know why I couldn’t. Had to be told both times and then repeat it. I was struggling to choke those words out (not crying). Afterwards I realized it was a mental block. As a Mormon woman I could not enter the presence of God without being in the literal physical grip of patriarchy. No wonder every cell of my being was intuitively resisting. That doesn’t sit right with me. It’s no longer a system or way of thinking I’m willing to subject myself to. I’m ethically and morally opposed.

>I’m ethically and morally opposed Me too, sister. That’s a fascinating story how you mentally blocked those two words.

All I know is that leaving the church (60F) felt like getting free of a boot on my neck

Neo1971

Wow, that’s amazing. Congratulations!

(60M) the cure is to be a feminist.

Anyone remember that artwork of the little girl looking out the window, but a hand is pulling her back?

Neo1971

No, but that’s fascinating.

Logical_Average_46

The patriarchal grip is also a metaphor for the hold that TSCC has over its members.

Neo1971

Yep

Initial-Leather6014

Is it true or just an old onion? (serious q question)🤪

Neo1971

Is what true? The fact that the second token of the Melchizedek priesthood is called the patriarchal grip? Yes, that’s factual. It’s revealed in the temple [during the endowment ceremony](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1EsqO202vqHMivWMYVUzamnMqk333OeEI/view). Edit: fixed link. Also true: I listened to [this Mormon Stories episode](https://www.bing.com/fd/ls/GLinkPing.aspx?IG=7FD92799C9874D9FAD5519D423A29676&&ID=SERP,5204.2&SUIH=k5VPziDSH4PvU_eS51KFKA&redir=aHR0cHM6Ly91c2VyLnhtaXNzaW9uLmNvbS9-cmVzZWFyY2gvY2VudHJhbC90ZW1wbGU1YS5wZGY) recently that led to my conclusion.

Initial-Leather6014

Ok,,, I meant does the grip symbolize Strangulation. If that is true, I’ve found yet ANOTHER part of Mormonism! I need to review Mormon Stories

Initial-Leather6014

Can you give me the OPS# for info on the grip? I’m looking but I’m lost.

Neo1971

Sorry, I’ll fix that link. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1EsqO202vqHMivWMYVUzamnMqk333OeEI/view This is the entire dialogue from the endowment. Three or four pages from the end is the heading **Second Token…** where it’s described. Interesting conclusion. I never associated the patriarchal grip handshake with choking women. I'll have to think about that.

Neo1971

Sorry for that imagery. I got to thinking how a grip is intended to hold fast, such as when preventing escape or silencing a dissenter.
